I have a 2005 Magnum R/T. I picked it up for $4200 about 3 years ago. It’s mostly garage kept but when I drive I really enjoy it. I am going to do a 392 swap on it and add Hellcat wheels. They are awesome cars.
I left my business card on an srt magnum 5-7 years ago asking to call me if they ever sell it. They called me 6 months ago, and they only wanted $7k for it, but I had just bought a new truck the day before and didn't have the extra cash. Kicking myself for letting it go
Whatever you do make sure the first modification you make is new heads. Don’t be like me and make the mistake of leaving the stock heads and letting the valve seat drop and destroy your engine. Valve seats dropping is a highly common catastrophic failure for these cars and they will cause the entire engine to need to be rebuilt. Just spent the last 6 months rebuilding my engine because of this.
I just picked up a 2005 R/T for $4500. It needs a few little things but runs great. I am going to swap the cylinder heads just as preventative maintenance so I don’t have a valve seat issue. But I absolutely love the car
Possibly the best thing you should do to avoid the dropped valve issue is replace the OEM 203 degree thermostat, which runs way too hot, for a 180 degree t-stat, and a Diablosport tuner to adjust your fan temps. On the LX forums, many people suspect the problem was caused by engines running too hot.
I picked up an '06 MSRT8 after driving an '06 MSXT for several years. The SRT8 is a joy to drive. Not the best fuel economy, but it still puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it.

I will say you can idle a crown vc all day and not have to worry about a thing unless you have fluid leaks or something. But these hemi engines have a few weak points that are catastrophic to an engine. The cams I believe in these engines ( may just be the 6.1) where made to set higher in the engine block. And it makes it more difficult for the engine to sling and pump oil to the camshaft. Which leads to premature lifter and cam failure. And also the valve seats are a thing with these engines, they fall out in your cylinder and goodbye hemi
The reason for valve seat drop is because of heat. Simple switch out of thermostat from 203° all the way down to 160° I have the 180° no valve seat issues, I have about 400 HP. With simple upgrades. Ive gone camping 5 people 2 tents 2 coolers full of food for 4 days not to mention kicker box with amp. I mean the issues are avoidable totally.
@@anthonyoquendo5986 the cams eating the lifters aren't as avoidable than the thermostat swap. That's just a bad design of how high the cam sets in the block. Yea I guess you could run some oil lines inside of engine. But is that really worth all the hassle? I don't think so not on a 5.7 anyways
@@anthonyoquendo5986 oh yeah! Duh... thermo too. The MDS is also a known to cause it. If you look into which valves have dropped most often, they are from the cylinders that switch off when cruising and MDS activates. Then you go get gas, turn off the engine for like.. 2-5 mins then pop it back on... clunk. I've heard that story from a few different owners.
1:36 wasn't expecting that. i find to interesting how suvs are so popular but wagons has more room than most. It also sucks how many car companies are just dropping gas cars over the ev hype
I love wagons but having lived with a Magnum and a little CR-V, the shape of the CRV is more useful even though it's a compact and weighs about a 1000 pounds less. Big dogs fit in the CRV without having to lay down due to the low sloping roofline of the Maggie. We replaced the CRV with a 4Runner Which weighs about the same as the magnum and as far as usability of the cargo area theres no beating a tall box of a vehicle. I agree tho - wagons are best of both worlds for ppl who dont need the height. I certainly loved driving the Magnum more than the others
As an owner of a 2006 magnum srt8, this car is so slept on. Sure it's heavy, but it's only 0.3 seconds slower in the 1/4 mile than the charger version. The styling is subjective but personally I'm a big fan of the looks. That 6.1 liter absolutely rips. Even in this big ol wagon. When you said get yourself a hemi powered magnum, I couldn't agree more.
I have 2--an R/T and an SRT8, both in inferno red. I LOVE these cars, they are unique, improbable, great highway cruisers that don't give a **** about grades, rock-solid at speed, both battle tested at over 150 mph.

I only bought the Magnum because I needed room for 3 car seats in the back. It was the V6 3.5l and I lo ed it so much I traded for another SXT with leather, heated seats etc. Finally the kids grew out of the car seats and I was ready for another sports car again (I have a 67 Camaro in my garage I bought in 82) then realized, I LOVED the Magnum. I'm in Southern California so it's the perfect car for cruising Pacific Coast Highway with the kids and for beach camping. I love your 10 reasons, i bought mines a few months ago yanked out the old and goin in with a Powertrain remanufacturerd with a high volume oil pump. Keep these magnum videos coming and keep up the good work.
You can simply disable it with a Diablosport tuner. MDS did weird things when I was cruising at highway speeds. Even if I was driving at a constant speed on cruise control, the motor would frequently change RPMs as if it wanted to change gears. It was very annoying. Disabling MDS fixed it.
@@Coelacanth97Does the fuel economy go down if you do that? Sounds like a stop/start system. Something invented to increase mpg, but it’s more annoying than helpful.
@@adamphynes7342 I honestly doubt it made a huge difference. It's not like deactivating 4 cylinders doubled my fuel economy...and if you're driving a Hemi, fuel economy shouldn't be your primary concern. But it sure made a difference with the smoothness of driveability.
I have 4 of these. An R/T, an SXT, and 2 SE's. While the R/T is fun to drive, the SE's, done right, run almost as good and get way better gas mileage. The SE's are typically 2.7l cars. To help driveability, they put 3.90 rear gears in them. Drop a 3.5l or a 4.0l in them and they become really quick cars and still get good gas mileage. I have an 06, 4.0l swap with the 3.90 gears. Great tow vehicle and reasonably quick. Parts chaser and road tripper. You can add pretty much any feature you want within reason from a Charger, 300, Magnum or Challenger as they are all the same car other than the exterior sheet metal.

Mechanic owned bought it for 1900 and other than a cracked windshield, everything worked except the cigarette lighter. I guess the point of my post is while the R/T and SRT will hold their value better and would be a kick to drive, the SXT with the 3.5L is no slouch and a great daily driver

Im getting 25MPG, not great not bad. but its the best riding car I have ever owned. also the magnum, is an LX, the 300, charger, and 2010 challenger, the sheet metal from the door forward is interchangeable, I was going to put a charger front end on the car, then thought maybe the challenger, then decided to eyelid and custom paint.
I have an 06’ Magnum RT awd and mine doesn’t sound anything like that… it just sounds like a normal engine- quiet and boring. Why? How do I get it to sound like yours? Also I been telling my family and friends who keep telling me to get rid of it- that it’s going to be a collectors car in the not too distant future and have some value to the right buyer- so NO I won’t get rid of it until I’m good and ready dammit.
My '05 Magnum RT AWD sounds really nice, it came with a Dynomax stainless exhaust system when I bought it about 5 years ago. The only thing I changed performance-wise is to replace the restrictive airbox with an AFM CAI, they're probably the best because they have a wider tapered intake tube diameter than the nicer-looking aluminum tube variants that are straight tubes, and a Diablosport Intune i3 tuner to tune the car for winter and summer performance (87 octane high-mile vs. 93 octane performance). I get a lot of comments about how it sounds. And to put into perspective, I know it sounds nice because I also own a '70 Charger with a built 383 Magnum, so I have a basis for comparison. :) It's not just subjective.
I’ve always wanted one of these units. They are crazy priced in Canada. 2006 Srt 8 230000km not awd 18,000$ 2007 rt 350000km 7000$. How far will these cars go ?
They are super popular here in Florida they are Hellcat and 392 and LS swaps I actually bought a 2.7 rolling chassis the best $400 I have spent , that I'm doing a bone stock ring gapped 4.8 twin turbo set close to 700 hp + when it's done
You have to hit the unlock button on the remote twice to unlock all doors including the hatch. Or, hit the unlock button on the drivers door. You have to make sure and push the rubber button on the backside of the hatch latch to activate the hatch release. Theres no mechanical lever on these. Short of that, you may have to remove the rear hatch panel from the inside to check the latching mechanism.

Did not know the suspension is based on the Mercedes LX (?) platform, definitely explains it handling like a go-cart in the twisty's. Like I said I wish it were a Hemi, but i did alright. Mechanic owned bought it for 1900 and other than a cracked windshield, everything worked except the cigarette lighter. I guess the point of my post is while the R/T and SRT will hold their value better and would be a kick to drive, the SXT with the 3.5L is no slouch and a great daily driver
Grabbing one tomorrow for 3k. Only problem is a/c. Once i get that fixed I cant wait to mod it
Just bought one last weekend for 6k. 140k miles midnight blue and the motor took a shit after 2 hours of driving it home. I DONT CARE. I LOVE THE MAGNUM. Just dropped 7k for a new motor and i plan on bulletproofing the engine and trans over time. Yup im 13k into my 06 and i couldn't be happier. I've wanted one for over 15 years. I'll never get rid of it
I see one for sell for 4k over 173,000 miles what do y’all think about that should I buy it
More space..... that's where the spare is supposed to be.
Great vid!
Do you know what hood that is? It seems to fit very well.
I agree unbelievable handling my stock suspension srt8 handles like a go cart , mind blowing for such a large platform...
Still have my '07 r/t awd with 24k miles on it.
I used to have a 2005 magnum from a buy here pay here place , a v6 all be it , was alsome the trans was bad they replaced it not the same for some reason and wasn't the same and had to send it back. But really loved it in the beginning. And really want to get another one so bad , but I want an earlier hemi version
Car looks and sounds superb much nicer than any suv.
Any srt suv sounds like this
Unfortunately, most of these were sold with the infamous 2.7 and ended up in the junkyard before being paid off.
Any mods done to it to sound like this ? Exhaust ? Headers ?
I remember when they first came out. I always told myself I’m getting one. I even wanted a 3.5 at one time just to have one. I waited and waited. Got mine with 117,000 RT for 42 or 4600 I forgot what I paid to be honest but love that damn car and I got a Donk Chevy also. I’d keep the magnum 😂 I had to edit this. Mind you…this MF car was featured in at LEAST 20 rap videos 😂
most of the reasons that I love having my Hemi Charger police car for the days when I don't want to drive a Vic
Ever since I had kids, that was my dream car.
Great vid. Just to get it off my mind, why in the world did dodge make the charger a 4 door. I might jump on a magnum. Thanks
dont like the poppy sound of no muffler. need some back pressure, at least a two chamber flow master, I have an 07 SXT, 3.5L with a street tune, duel exhaust, powerdyne blower, Im making 370HP. 150K miles on it. but it has a better ride then my GFs 06 Merc E350.
I traded my Magnum SRT8 for a Toyota Prius. Still have my Prius V
4:21 😮💨😮💨
I think there's something wrong with my magnum. It doesn't handle like a sports car, it handles like a boat.
Saw one on another channel that was hell cat swapped.
Got mine for 8,800 with 21k original miles RT 05
Love my 05 rt awd.got balls big ones😅
What is that lowerd on coilovers or springs? I need that setup it's si clean!
Where you at I am in Tennessee. Let's link up also the Tennessee magnum mafia
2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 Dodge Magnum, seems like 4 years😅
It was always too bad about the front end on them.
I had a gen3 hemi it ate a lifter.
Correction they made them for four years not to mention the two years they made them in the 70s but still all good reasons to own one
Those mid-70's Magnums weren't wagons, though. They were basically Cordobas.
Where can I find that hood? I need it for my RT
I own 06 r/t magnum and jeep commander 06 hemi.
How does one get a radar detector
Holy shit the srt8s are expensive as hell! Under 100k miles is over 20k!?!
Legendary....
I wanted to get a Dodge Magnum RT instead I got a 06 charger RT and a 2012 Police pursuit with the 5.7 hemi 👍 love my hemi 👍💪
What exhaust and what else was done to make it sound like this ?
Only been made for “4” years not 3
I bought one for $2800 and the motor blew so I junked it man I regret it
Dam can we get details what happened how did it blow
I would actually get one if I wasn't owning 3 cars.
Do you know anyone with or where to get a supercharger for my Vic i really want one
Hey the 3.5 not bad but the 2.7 sucks
I’ve always wanted one of these units. They are crazy priced in Canada. 2006 Srt 8 230000km not awd 18,000$
2007 rt 350000km 7000$. How far will these cars go ?
That’s what there worth in Florida sometimes even more expensive
@@rcmc1256 lmao , that’s crazy. If it’s 18k in Florida, it’s 24,500$ in Canada. Our dollar is shit.
The Base and SXT models going up to man it makes no sense
Nice, nice 👍🏻
RIP Headphone Users
They are super popular here in Florida they are Hellcat and 392 and LS swaps I actually bought a 2.7 rolling chassis the best $400 I have spent , that I'm doing a bone stock ring gapped 4.8 twin turbo set close to 700 hp + when it's done
I just got a 05 rt...my trunk want open. What cause that?
You have to hit the unlock button on the remote twice to unlock all doors including the hatch. Or, hit the unlock button on the drivers door. You have to make sure and push the rubber button on the backside of the hatch latch to activate the hatch release. Theres no mechanical lever on these.
Short of that, you may have to remove the rear hatch panel from the inside to check the latching mechanism.
I’ve got an 05 magnum rt tht cut off while driving n never came back on the previous owner said it had electrical issues but I don’t know if thts it I need help finding the problem if anyone has an answer please reply to this comment n lmk something
Unplug door sensors.
Daddys grocery getter!
Do a video of cadillac sts
💪🏾💯
I have one , never getting rid of it , goes like a mutherf$$ker .
It’s a 1,000 just fix a water pump.
I love my msport 328 wagon
I think you should rent a dumpster.
If anybody buys a magnum after this video be warned. I love my magnum without a doubt, but you must replace the heads on any magnum over 100k miles or before you know it the valve seats will drop and you will need to rebuild the entire engine. A very common failure for the 5.7 Hemi in these cars.
They won't listen. They believe this raggedy Magnum is great, and they act like an engine swap is cheap. Most of the ones I tried to get needed work.
Waverly?
the ac will not keep these cool i think the back isnt well insulated
My 2009 maxima I just bought for $1,000 has the same 0-60. I came up 4sho!
The fact is its a junk and a dodge to boot never last but. makes a great boat anchor
