Finally is exactly the correct statement. I think this should have happened after last year's playoff loss but of course the owners had to waste another season. Let's pray for Harbaugh as the new bolts HC.
Chargers looked completely, totally disinterested - they weren't even "uninspired". That was bizarre. Looked like they just wanted to home after the first quarter. They had to fire Staley. That lack of effort is on a coach.
Now there's no more excuses for Herbert! Can't blame Anthony Lynn, can't blame Staley. If the Chargers don't start winning and making post season runs it can only be Herbert.
I sort of felt the opposite. After watching that game last night, now I realize what an awful team that Herbert tried to hold together. From bad pass protection, to no running game, and all their star receivers being out most of the time, and a defense that has been one of the worst defenses in the NFL the last 3 years, I'm not blaming him as much now.
This game brought back memories of the old Raiders, and a ole Eagles song, "Somebody's gonna hurt someone Before the night is through Somebody's gonna come undone There's nothin' we can do There's going to be a Heartache tonight"!
I bet the Chargers couldn't get back to the Hotel California fast enough. I couldn't believe my Lyin' Eyes when I saw it 42-0 at the half. Running in a pick six like a Desperado. I was of the opinion before yesterday the best thing the Chargers could do for themselves was fire Staley at the end of the season, because any prospective coach who wasn't already wooed by the idea of working with Herbert would be able to come in knowing the organization would allow their coach to see it through (as a direct selling point against a team like Carolina for example). And that the best thing Staley could do for himself, following the unfortunate season ending surgery of his QB, was get his boys ready to play for this game. Even if they didn't win they could show how hard this roster has battled this season. Yesterdays effort was so appalling that firing him was the only right answer. They played a raiders team that got blanked in a 0-3 game and got absolutely smoked. That felt like an organizational loss, not just a regular loss. That's how embarrassing that was. I said it on the video announcing Herberts injury and I'll say it here too, I feel genuinely bad for Charger fans for it turning out like this. Your organization doesn't deserve your loyalty and I commend you for it. Here's hoping you get a coach/gm that can turn things around and I don't just mean in W/L column, the culture column too.
Honestly I knew a couple of years ago that Staley wasn't up for the job after that game against the Chiefs where he kept going for it on 4th down then after they lost he came up with that stupid nonsense about how you don't beat the Chiefs by kicking field goals even though if he had kicked the field goals they would've won.
I started both Jakobi Meyers and Davante Adams on my fantasy roster, due to injuries to others. When Meyers passed a TD to Adams, I think that got me 15pts in the one play. Luckiest moment ever.
Until the last two games, I thought the calls to fire Staley might be overstated. Sure, the team was underperforming, but they were also unlucky. They were 5-7, but they were 0-5 in teams decided by a field goal or less. Their losses were by: (1) 2 points, (2) 3 points, (3) 3 points, (4) 14 points, (5) 3 points, (6) 3 points, (7) 10 points. Their wins were by (1) 4 points, (2) 7 points, (3) 17 points, (4) 21 points, and (5) 6 points. In other words, they had scored 20 more points than they had allowed. If they had just been average and gone 3-2 in those 3-points-or-less games ... they would have been 8-4. So, yeah, underperforming, but there was also definitely some luck issues. But then they lost to the Broncos by 17 and the Raiders by 42. Maybe the team had given up because of their bad record, but it's hard to disagree with the firing now.
The problem to begin with is Staley can't out coach anyone else in the NFL. Like when it comes to clock management and getting your team in position to win. He just kept leading this team off a cliff, he was bound to lose the locker room eventually.
@@oblivieon1567 And undoubtedly that can sway a game or two-but 0-5 in three point games is still an aberration. There's no one on the planet who can out-coach the field so dominantly in close games as to win 75% or more of them ... but who is repeatedly in close games because they can't out-coach the field outside of the last quarter. The reverse is also true: No one is good enough to be in close games but then bad enough to lose all of those close games. So maybe, in an average season, he would've gone 2-3 in those 3 point games. That's still a 7-5 record before the Broncos and Raiders-and, arguably, that's still underperforming (although if the GM was also fired ... you actually have to wonder whether team leadership has faith in the roster). Still, he's clearly lost the locker room, and he had to go.
You forget, he cost the Chargers the playoff two seasons ago when he called a time out instead of letting both team make the playoffs. Second season, the second biggest comeback in NFL playoff history when they were up by 27-0 and lost by one point. And all the strange 4th down calls...the list goes on. he should have been fired over a year ago...we all saw this train wreck coming.
@@martin9410That's fair! Definitely not disagreeing that he had weak spots ... but then, a lot of coaches do. Has an NFL coach ever been fired mid-game? Yes. Player/Coach Frank Coughlin was fired in the middle of a game in 1921. Overall stats between the 2 teams is reasonably similar - until - you get to turnovers. You can't give up the ball 5 times and expect to do anything, especially giving up 2 defensive TDs.
I mainly knew of the Chargers' woes because of Tom Grossi calling for Staley's firing. The Chargers offense was amusingly bad early on; I eventually expected either a feeble screen or a turnover on every play. Their QB made some nice throws late though.
I started AOC because I basically gave up on my fantasy team and dropped higher ranking qb's to create havoc in the waiver wire. Got the best of both worlds.
Chargers players made a statement verses the Broncos last Sunday. They played a horrible game and Chargers fans were leaving the stadium after the 3rd qtr. Staley went to the postgame podium & said (again) “I take full responsibility” but the “owners” didn’t hear it. Thursday Night Football rolls around verses the hated Raiders and the players decided to scream as loud as they could… losing 63-21 the players were finally heard. The only remaining issue, other than the horrible position coaches that hopefully are gone too, the only remaining issue is ownership. I’ll say this as loudly as I can… THE SPANOS FAMILY NEEDS TO FIRE THEMSELVES AND SELL THIS FRANCHISE!
As a Raider fan, as much as I want the Raiders to be awesome, this was about the Chargers mailing it in. Christmas vs KC will be another more legit test.
As a Chargers fan, I wanted to thank you! I was hoping we would be blown out. Thought it was the only way to get rid of our coach and GM on national TV. I was actually hoping you might score 80 or 90 points just to make sure the chargers ownership had no choice. Bless you.

Its a good day in charger land!
Yes I hear the 2 fans celebrating now.
“At what point did the chargers give up?”
At least they didn’t give up 70
Chargers players made a statement verses the Broncos last Sunday. I’ll say this as loudly as I can…
THE SPANOS FAMILY NEEDS TO FIRE THEMSELVES AND SELL THIS FRANCHISE!
I picked up raiders defense this week, it was great
Chargers defense sent a message to Spanos
We living in hell
That was a jail gang bang!😂😂😂😂
I started Raiders Defense.... sitting pretty good week one of playoff
I started the Charges defense and had Eckler in losers playoff bracket, on my way to the Toilet Bowl
It would have been a favor to Staley to fire him at halftime. He wouldn't have had to do press after the game.
4:46 not when you get a buyout and will just be another recycled coach in the NFL. Regardless of position or title
at 21-0, it already seemed clear that staley had under 24 hours left
I'm just surprised they let him back on the bus after the game.
Bless you.
You will get a better coach, and I predict be able to draft Harrison Jr. Good luck!@@martin9410
@@PianoUniverse
Harrison will be long gone
Chargers are drafting at 5 right now, and could get a 4 if they keep losing. Lots of QBs will go before him.@@lordrayden3045
Louis Riddick Gm and Brian Flores as head coach
Chargers ownership deserves failure for leaving SD
"Eff you, Spanos!"
Another highlight of this is the Raiders think they are actually good so they'll probably hire Antonio Pierce! 😂
They need a qb that's it defensive is legit a few more pieces we gucci
Glad i haven't seen thursday night football all season
I think they had already given up when they got off their flight in Las Vegas.
It was like watching Arena Football.
If the Chargers pick another bad head coach, Justin Herbert will be 30 with nothing to show for his first 8 years in the league.
Chargers just laid down and died
What an opportunity for a defensive minded head coach with a LONG history of defensive genius and multiple Super Bowl wins. Who could fix the Chargers problems I wonder.
I do not feel bad foe Easton Stick. Aiden got his first official start against the Chargers and got sacked 7 times, 6 by Mack.
What kind of "boat race" are you talking about?
