I know my theory pretty damn well ive been playing guitar coming up on 20 years and i always wrote these off as gimmicks but their simplicity and versatility is really what makes them so great. It allows a beginner to play like a skilled musician, maybe not the technical side but the theory side is super super simple to tap into on these. I think a beginner aspiring guitar player could really have a leg up on other beginners if they had one of these to learn some basic interval patterns on. Sure you need several cigar box guitars to cover everything but still very cool. Awesome video!
Just found these wonderful instruments, and got my son-in-law one for Christmas. He enjoys exploring different instruments and I think he will have a terrific time with this. Thanks for showing off how intriguing they can be!
You can also play it with a slide of course. In fact, I usually associate this instrument with slide blues. I'm surprised you didn't show that. Great builds though.

@@georgvonsauer2618 Well, if you're ever short of someone to give them to... ?😇 I prefer 4 strings. Just kidding. I made a couple myself. Then I tried to make one with frets and I didn't know anything about frets or how perfectly they needed to be aligned. It was nearly unplayable. Which was disappointing because I put a lot more detail into that one. I used a magnetic pickup instead of just throwing a piezo in there. Volume knob. You Sir have built some.of the best sounding CBG's I've heard yet. There are some beautiful CBG's out there and think guys like Shane Speal are great builders (he's a sick player) also, but some of the guitars sound like the intonation is a little off. or maybe the tuning is just slipping. Anyway there are some fantastic builder's on youtube but you're guitars sound like solid instruments. Bravo!!! I'd love to see you do a dogbowl resonator or a merlin size stick dulcimer. Ty keep it up!
The intonation/tuning is a little off sometimes..And sometimes it's meant to be..That way you get that really gritty authentic Blues sound. Often, in the early days, theirs were out of tune..strings were anything they could use, necks were fretless and they tuned em best they could. A CBG is the only instrument you can get that early blues sound from in my opinion..
Del, While building my CBG in Brisbane Australia I hit upon using spent small pistol primers as fret markers. Food for thought sir. Really appreciate your love of this instrument.

Im a guitarist too, have 6 strings, gone to 7th strings but this seems like alot of fun and possibly a nice project considering my few piezos lying around.
4 strings seems like the perfect amount of strings for more diverse options when tuning (and making for easy play) while still maintaining a low amount of strings. It allows you to keep the top and bottom as the root and adjust the middle strings to suit. Such as 1-3-5-1 or 1-4-5-1 or 1-5-7-1 and so on.

Hi, you forgot to say that the thinner the string and the more tension it will be on the neck, so if you don't want the neck to bend (when building a cigar box guitar with low quality wood) one may preferably use the thick strings of a guitar strings set, the yellow ones, or the 5th 4th 3rd string (starting from top to bottom of the guitar. I learned this from John McNair from Red Dog Guitars and I'm sort of a cigar box guitar builder myself. Your Pentatonicaster with just intonation is a great idea, I love your work ! Rudyard, that's the great thing about CBGs... anyone can play (even those who don't think they can play a musical instrument). To play standard chords you just need one finger across all three strings. No need to learn chord positions or fingering. With just a minor string tuning change you can include a whole second set of chords and by using 2 fingers (in the same position) you can play pretty much 99% of all songs ever written. You can literally learn to play a CBG in 15 minutes (no exaggeration), and either keep it simple (folk style singalong) or progress from there to be as skilled as you wish. This 3-string design goes way back to the earliest of string instruments, thousands of years old. In my mind it's about the best "beginners" instruments a person can pick up. : )
