How to grow Carrots from seed

  • Carrots are best grown in sandy, well prepared soil which has been previously manured at least 6 months before you decide to sow your seeds (don't worry if you have not manuared your patch before you sow, just make sure you add some good organic compost and fertilizer). However if your soil is heavy clay, stony and doesn't drain well, then you should only plant main crop short rooted varieties of carrots.
Carrots take between 12 and 16 weeks to mature to full size but you can use the thinnings or pull them earlier and use a baby carrots.
To grow carrots successfully, and in fact any root vegetables it is really important that you prepare the soil well by digging it over and removing any stones that might get in the way. Also if the soil is 'clayey' then it would be a good idea to add some sand, organic compost and maybe some perlite to help lighten the soil and also for drainage etc. The soil needs to be crumbly and in no way compacted. One week before sowing your seeds, rake in a good organic fertilizer.
Carrot seeds are tiny and it is a good idea to sow them as thinly as possible. This reduces the amount of thinning necessary and potential risk from pests such as the carrot fly. If you are having trouble sowing and think that you are, maybe sowing too thickly then try adding some sand to the seeds before sprinkling them into ground. Sow the carrot seeds about 1/2 " deep and about 4" - 6" apart depending on the variety you are growing then cover them over lightly.
Once the seeds have germinated which may take a good week or so, depending on when you sowed them wait till they are large enough before thinning out. I always wait till they are big enough to use the thinnings. Stayed tuned for an update on the growing root vegetables as the season goes on!! I read in a health book that a study showed a person who eats a carrot a day and smokes a pack of cigarettes a day has less chance of getting lung cancer then someone who doesn't smoke or eats carrots. They clean your lungs and as a welder who eats a lot of carrots for thus reason I can tell you I have very good lungs and a great sense of smell. This will be my 2nd year growing carrots last year I had them in soil that had a lot chunks of organic material which made them all curled and knoted up.

Know of anyone doing this in english? ;-) To sow my carrot seed I use a flour sifter. I estimate how much dirt will go through the sifter in the length of the row. Then I put that much dirt in a bowl. Then you estimate how many seeds you need to plant the row. Add those seeds to the bowl of dirt and then mix it up well and then place in the sifter while it is over the row and then sift in the row. Then put more dirt in the sifter and put a light sift of dirt on top and then moisten with a sprayer and cover with plastic. Check a couple times a day to keep moist. Carrots can not touch the plastic.

ive no clue if you'll see this or even answer me but I have been trying to grow carrots for months and the sprouts keep dying after three weeks
they're kept in a bright warm place the entire time and they always die!
I use soil that's been baked to prevent molds and it also has some sand mixed in to keep it from getting too moist.
every time at around week three/four they start wilting and dying
    it's so frustrating!!!

Any ideas on fertilizing carrots throughout the season? I've heard two different opinions, of course! One says use 0-5-5, no nitrogen. The other says to "mulch with grass clippings", which are high in nitrogen. What kind and schedule do you fertilize your carrot beds?

much more efficient to broadcast, and thin in 2 square foot sections. They will canopy out the weeds after about 4 weeks. I thin to 1" apart at 3 weeks, and 2" apart at 6 weeks, and get 36 carrots per square foot....
