Here is how we store our carrots that we have been doing for several years now. We harvest them around the first two weeks of November, depending on the weather forcast. We store them by: 1- cutting off the tops very close to the flesh of the carrot. 2- Use a plastic square container which is about the 25 gallon size that has a lid. (you could use a plastic garbage can also). 3- Use wood shavings to line the bottom to about 1-2 inches. ( You can purchase shavings at a Farm & Ranch Store) 4- Lay each carrot on the shavings without touching the sides of your container or another carrot. The goal is to have each carrot surrounded by at least 1/2" of shavings. 5- Repeat this until you get near the top of the container. Then place your last layer of shavings over the carrots and install your lid. We keep these containers in our underground cellar ( you could use a cool place in your basement) and they will keep through the winter until the end of May or over 6 months. Just an idea that has worked very well for us for several years. Thanks again for your work!!
That's great! Thank you for sharing!
Awesome tip! Thanks!
We do the same, on a smaller scale, using peat in lieu of wood chips. We also lightly mist each layer. The theory of lightly moistening is the peat will absorb or give off the moisture as is needed to keep the carrots (we use this for potatoes also) fresh determinate by the humidity in the storage area.
Sand works too.
So helpful 💗💗💗💗
I am a very experienced gardener, but I have really struggled with carrots. This year I followed a different method, and yippee I had great ones, and yess it was fun to harvest. And nearly all of them were good sized. I used the method of watering the soil thoroughly, and laying a board over them for ten days, like you demonstrated, it is a great method.
Fantastic! Did you lift the board every few days to water the seeds/soil?
@@louisefox4852 I did not. I thoroughly saturated the soil and sprinkled the seeds, and lay the board on them. I did peek around day 7, no growth, but on day 10 they were starting. After uncovering them I watered carefully at first, and just kept them well watered throughout their growing season. They were the first time I ever had decent carrots. I didn’t plant any last year, never got it done. But I’ll be growing them again this year.
The board trick is really nifty. I'll do it. I also mix carrot seed with dry sand and when you sprinkle it out while planting the seeds are automatically spaced farther apart. Works well.
Nice tip. I do that with my lettuce.👍
Tips like this is WHY I love watching these videos.
Brilliant!
You can also mix about a teaspoon of seeds in about 4 tablespoons of corn flour and then put it in a spice shaker and sow that way. Lets you see where you sowed and thins it out
Brian, I have been a Master Gardener for 8 years and I still learn tips for growing veggie when I watch your videos. Thanks so much, keep growing Ray
Hi Ray, Just Curious.... What does one have to do to become a Master Gardner ?
Thanks Ray!
@@jussitikkuri6991 I would also like to know.
Love the board trick and using scissors to thin. I had given up on carrots.
Out of all the carrot growing videos I've watched, I would have to say this is the most informative and covers all the aspects of how to achieve perfect
carrots. Proper phos and potassium and you have the perfect carrots.
Best description yet for planning carrots! Thanks 💕
This is great! So happy I found this channel. Brian you are so easy to understand and quick to get to the point.
Hi there, I'm a new gardener and I really love watching your videos. Thanks for always breaking things down into simple and do-able steps!
I just love your videos. You have a clear, calm and concise way of explaining the how and why of things. You make it doable and not daunting. After watching a video of yours for the first time two weeks ago, I rounded up all the garden pots in the shed and added some inexpensive buckets and started with green peppers, tomatoes and herbs. They’re growing great! Thank you for your awesome videos.
Finally a video that explains EVERYTHING...you answered my question 10 seconds into your video...im a transplant kinda guy...i live to start things in doors, i find a better result that way because i live in a very rainy climate
Great details, and for every stage of growth and harvest! Just what I needed to feel that I might have a chance growing some carrots this year. Thank you!
I had my first success last year in a grow bag and i used a heavy piece of cardboard instead of a board. I will be doing it again this year! April 12 can not get here fast enough!
I love the idea of doing the radishes and carrots together to thin your carrots! That’s awesome thanks for that tip!
After years of planting regular carrot seeds (over seeding) and then having to thin them all out, I started using the carrot pellets from Stokes Seeds. It takes a little longer to plant, but you do not spend all that time after to thin them. I have used this method for the last 8 years and will continue to use this method. Just passing along an idea. By the way, thanks for your videos. Very well done!!
Loved the idea of carrots and radishes together. Love them both and was planning on planting both. Now can do them together. Love your advice.
Used this method this year and finally got super germination, thank you for all your videos. I am a big fan !
I just wanted to say thanks for the videos! This will really help my gardens.
Planting carrots and potatoes today! Thanks for all the tips!
Terrific rundown that I needed to gain the confidence to start growing carrots next spring. Thanks!
I love watching you! Thank you. So helpful and we really enjoy the way you explain everything so nicely and calmly.
You gave us really useful information specific to problems while growing carrots. Thank you!
This is the best carrot planting video. I gave up planting carrots but now I will try again after watching this. So much information here. Thanks so much.
One of the best carrot videos, thank you.
As usual this video is perfect timing as my carrots desperately need to be thinned and the scissor method sounds like the way to go. Thanks Brian
This is the best web cam to guide people planting vegetable!💯
Brian I am a new gardener and a recent subscriber. I am learning quite a lot from your videos. Most of these subjects I have zero knowledge but thanks to you I am gaining confidence daily. Thank you and keep those videos coming.
By far, the best carrot video I have seen. Learned a lot. I planted my seeds about 2 weeks ago. I am getting lots of germinated sprouts. My #1 question was about thinning them out. Thanks for the tips. I will try the radish trick next year!
Thank you!
Just did this today in Comox BC. Canada. I just can't wait to see under the board in a week or week and a half. This is a great idea. I had a set of boards from a wooden futon bed laying around for years (20?). About twenty of them all 30" ish. I knew I would find a use for them someday and today was the day for 8 of them. I have plenty left for tomorrow's beds.
Thank you so much.
I'm in the southern hemisphere and it's spring here, I'm keen to try your tips as I struggle to grow carrots
Thanks so much for the tip with the board. My grandfather used to use a wet hessian bag but i find in my hot arid climate it droes out while i'm at work. Will definitely give the board a try i think it will work much better.
Wow you could be a teacher you helping people without you knowing
Yes, right off the bat by saying they don't like being transplanted! Thank you for that.
Thank you- your covered everything that I was needing to educate myself about.
Again, things I didn't know about growing carrots. Thanks so much.
You are the best teacher. Thank you
I LOVE carrots !!!! I'm going to to try grow in some this year. My son and I are going to make a large cage for my plants outside. BUT everything will be indoors at night.
LOL "a gardener's DNA"... This is the best video about growing carrots, thank you so much for sharing it!
Another way, which might sound silly, is to cut the bottom off a 3 oz dixie cup. Bury the tops in the soil but leaving some of it showing and each touching. Place a seed in center of each cup and put the dixie cup bottom (which you cut off) on the top like you would the wood. It takes some time, but it keeps the seeds spread out and you know where they are growing so you don't plant something else. Since I plant in round containers with round rows, this works for me. Love your channel.
That was an all inclusive guide. I'm just now trying the paper plate in soil and freezer method. It is working exactly as you described. Two days on top of the fridge after a day in the freezer and they are all sprouting- Napoli and Scarlet Nantes.
Excellent information! I'm a first time carrot grower in Zone 9 near Tampa. I'll definitely try the board technique, as i just put in seeds, so thanks!
I love your video I learn a lot coz I love gardening thank You Brian
Thanks Bryan. Great job. Good info. Love the board tip.
Really useful. I have carrot seeds on the way and can’t wait to plant them.
Fantastic info, as usual. Nice idea with the radishes!
very best info ever on carrots. planting tomorrow. thnx a lot!!!
I've never heard of the board tip before, thank you!
Thanks for the good information and the great channel ! I’m glad you are back and mended and in the garden.
You're welcome and thank you!
Loved the video. Very informative. Keep'em coming!
Thanks from the U.K. Really useful video.
Just reviewed this and I have to say you do a great job of presenting all the important information in a very clear way. I'm getting anxious to get started with the 2023 garden.
Much appreciated!
Years ago I was having a hard time planting the right amount of carrot seeds by sifting then through my thumb and fingers. I came up with the idea of using a small spice bottle with the inside plastic lid with holes in it. I put the carrot seeds in the little bottle, put the lid on and just sprinkle the seeds into the furrow as you would sprinkle the spice. You can also sow other small seeded vegetables like lettuce or radishes, etc. This surely helped me and I hope it can help someone else.
Wow. Tons of really good tips.
Wow! Awesome advice, thanks. In my way to plant some in my greenhouse
Great video full of lots of very useful information. Thank you.
Like the idea of mixing radishes and carrot seeds.
Köszi...remek előadás volt!
I plan on growing carrots this year. I have never grown them before so we will see.
This is very informative! Thanks!
Loved this! A great growing guide! Thank you! ♥️
Thank you and you're welcome!
Last year I had carrot success for the first time. My trick? Pelleted seeds. Yes, more expensive to buy, but less expensive than failure and a lot less frustrating than thinning.
Thank you so much!! My dogs' favorite snack is carrots!!
I germinate carrot seeds in a transparent container and transplant them into containers where they can grow to maturity
This eliminates thinning and attracting the carrot fly
It’s worked for me for years and I don’t get bothered with the carrot fly. Strong straight carrots every time
Good suggestion about the board! I have had all kinds of trouble getting carrots to germinate in Colorado Springs, where it can be pretty hot and dry. Today it was 96 degrees and no moisture for a couple of days. I'll find a board and give it a try. Thanks. I really enjoy your gardening show and the tips.
Thank you 🙂
Thanks for this. I'm still having trouble with forking but only in one of my fields. I leave my tops on for market and include a recipe for carrot top pesto. So delicious! Most people don't know that the tops, like radish and turnip tops, are edible and packed full of flavour and nutrients.
I would never buy a carrot with the top on, as explained in the video, the tops rob the carrots of moisture making them dry and tasteless.
Great Info! I LOVE your channel. Thank you!!!
Today's the day that I'm trying to sow 🥕. Hopefully I'll have a good crop
Thanks 😊
Very helpful, practical information. Thank you
Thank you so much helped me a lot. I found you information very helpful so easy to listen to thank you .

So helpful. Thank you. Carrots are my favorite veggie and I have the worst luck. I shall follow your advice exactly lol
Thank you! This was extremely helpful. I’m gonna try the ground AND a container and see what happens #ILoveCarrots!
GREAT WORK. ITS BEEN VERY HELPFUL
Great tips. I like the board idea.
Thanks for this guide!
I am learning so much from you!
Great video ..I'm a beginner gardener and do want to grow carrots so thanks ! I think this will help a lot 😃✌
You're welcome. Good luck!
Awesome Video! I've been growing Carrots for years, but didn't know the trick to germinate them faster using a board to keep the soil moist. I'm about to plant in zone 9 in California (up on a mountain) and it's very dry this year so def going to try that!! Thank you!
Thank you. Good luck!
Love your advice
THANK YOU
Hi Brian! I will sow some carrot seeds now and see how well they grow. First time growing carrots, already did my pepper plants and I think today will start with my tomatoes. Thank you for all your videos huge help for me🙏🌱🌶🥒🍅
Good luck. You're welcome!
Thank you Brian for a most informative explanation of the pluses and minuses of growing carrots. I have found that growing carrots in an identical way each time still gives a huge variation in results. Still, the grandkids like to pull and eat one every time they visit.
Keep doing what you do so well and look after your health. John in Australia.
Thank you so much John!
Great video! Very informative.
THANK YOU very much!!! Awesome advice!!
I like the idea of the board.
I had grown carrots up to the middle of Dec onc. I made a plastic tent over them ,had to brush snow off the tent when i harvested them worked great.
Your awesome and amazing, thank you and I got your book yesterday on companion planting 💞💛💚
Thank you ❤️
What if you put little one-inch legs on the board? So it's like a long, low table. Week one, put it topside-down. Week two, flip it over.
Love that!
That was my first thought also when I watch the video...
Clever!!
I wasn’t going to grow carrots but after watching this I want to. Please keep inspiring us.
Awww..thank you!
Very very informative! 🥕
Super awesome video! Thank you!
Thankyou for all the excellent tips.!! I love eating fresh carrots and never have had any luck growing them..This does give me hope thou. Love the board idea.!!!
Quick story. When my Daughter was young (4yrs) I let her have her own area of the yard to garden in. Just to instill the love of Gardening, and she always wanted to be doing what ever I was doing. Nothing would grow underneath the Cedar tree. But I didnt want her to give up interest of gardenng. So behind her back I dug in some store purchased Carrots with the tops still on..Then said" I think you should check your carrots, they look ready to me. " She thought she grew them. Ha ha . Your video had a child (maybe yours) pulling a carrot. Made me smile. Cheers Happy Gardening
That's a great story!
Thank you for the information/video!
Fantastic video, I live in Australia and have tried to grow carrots a few times with little success so I will try this trick at the end of our winter :) Thank you I enjoy your videos very much
You're welcome! Good luck!
Very interesting! Helpful, too! I was advised not to thin them-that might signal to bad bugs. Was I mislead? But my plants have never grown more than 2 inches! I’ll try these ideas, thanks!
Excellent!! Thanks so much. Now I will try them. 😁
Oh gosh, I have done so many things wrong with growing carrots no wonder I never get any, I will try to sow some in a pot this season. Thank you for another fantastic and informative video, Brian! 😃
Oh good! Let me know how it goes!😃
Thanks I’ll have a go at container carrots and use a board too 👍
Very informative. I love your videos because I am a newbie California gardener, and many of the videos out there are from gardeners in zones quite different from mine. They still have great information, but yours, I know come from the experience of growing in So. Cal. I live in a 9b zone.
