Sailor's Knife Lanyard Knot, aka Single-Strand Diamond Knot

- I was recently asked how I did this two tone lanyard knot so this is in response to that request. It's fairly simple in fact The Sailor's Knife Lanyard knot is the first decorative knot that I learned directly from The Ashley book of Knots.
Ashley lists 5 known names for this knot. The Sailors Knife Lanyard Knot, The Marling-Spike Lanyard Knot, Single-Strand Diamond Knot, Two-Strand Diamond Knot, and the Bosun's Whistle Knot. So take your pick, the paracord world probably has a few names as well.

Bird Ofsorts it is a diamond but I’ve always used the name Ashley gives first. He actually quotes 5 names for this knot.

Cool. I always heard it called a boatswain's pipe knot. Looks really good with the two contrasting collor cords.
Ashley also calls it that name, trouble is he has 5 names for it. It’s nice to tie it in pairs like this. As you say the two colours work well and as a bonus it’s quicker to tie in pairs than it is to double it in the normal way. Thanks for watching

Yes this knot has many names it is more like a foot rope knot than a diamond knot but I know it is a Turks head made with 2 cords I can also make a 3 l X 8 b Turks head with 4 cords

I’m never sure what technically constitutes a turks head. This is started with a Carrick bend and appears in Ashley’s book of Knots as #787

I've reverted to shooting on my iPhone, seems to pick up the best audio for the least effort. I'm learning to edit on premier elements which is suitably easy for a newbie editor. The back drop is my wife's shawl which I use because under it is a hideous striped couch. Lot's of decisions being made in search of the easiest outcome. As to strobing no, not as yet. As I understand it strobing would be caused by a mismatch between shutter speed and lighting flicker. What light source do you use? Fluro tubes actually flicker a lot and can be problematic with motion cameras. You can't see it with the eye but cameras can pick it up.
I think that my issue is that the voltage here in the 🇬🇧 is 60 Hz and the shutter on my camera is 60 fps. I am seriously thinking of going for rechargeable LED lights to see if that cures it. I personally am always amazed on the great results that come from them. I personally use Shotcut, which is open source. If I had to pay for software, I could never afford the rope as well!!! 😉
does your camera have adjustable shutter speed. You could try a slower speed. My videos shot with the red shawl back ground are shot with natural light. By far the best scenario,, short of going into the studio that is. I have a diffusion sheet hung over a window, works a treat. Unfortunately the sun is not always shining, especially at night, very annoying.

Hello Sir. What brand is the 600MilCord you are using? I have plenty of 550 ParaCord, but I like the smaller cord you are using. Where did you find it?
Chris Griffin hi. The cord is all made by me. There is a link to my store in the pinned comment. I don’t have a lot of stock as I’m currently to busy in my regular work to keep up supply. What I do have is there though. It’s hard laid cotton. Very different to paracord but great for this type of knotting.
Just out of curiosity, what decorative knot would you use to tie the legs of a ditty bag lanyard to the ditty bag eyelets? I have thought about a Lanyard (Diamond) knot but then I'd have to sit down and figure out how to tie it with only access to one end.
Roger Banks hi Roger. Tough question because I’ve never made a ditty bag. I’ve seen them spliced and then a footrope tied with the tails. A multi turn Blood knot tied as a slip knot would also work,,, I’m a fan of the Blood knot. Otherwise post a question on one of the facebook groups you’ll get some good suggestions.

This is also called the Diamond knot - heavily used in the Paracord community. Which probably was adding to the 4-strand Diamond / Footrope confusion. As technically this should be a 2-strand Footrope knot which then is an existing thing and different knot altogether - ABOK #783, the same as the 2-strand Diamond - ABOK #781. It is technically more a Footrope knot because the Carrick Bend provides the crown part at the start that defines all Footrope knots, but it also adds 2 bights.
Mabel Marble way to many names for a semi literate fella, no wonder I’m in a permanent state of confusion. I go with the Sailor’s knife lanyard knot because that’s what stuck in my head when I first learnt it. I’ve never explored the paracord world so that cultures nomenclature also isn’t familiar
Philip Le Masurier I get what you're saying. But I have found it important to look at the other names and sources where it may come from with other names. I was forever confused about Diamond / Footrope knots. Some people argue they are just names, but they are not as all knots are systematically or mathematically related. It really accelerated my learning curve to pay attention to these details. Did I say lovely video already?
