I suspect you may have inadvertently left out 3 of the most important advantages a salt gun should have over a fly swatter: Preventing escapes, hitting places swatters can't reach and not slapping a filthy swatter all over your home's surfaces. Bugs resting on a surface seem to frequently remain in place for some time, but attempt to flee if you get near swatting range. You should be able to point a salt gun at a resting insect and fire from within 1-3 feet away without alerting it into escape mode. To me, that alone would be a massive advantage. Bugs can also frequently get in or near corners, tiny openings, areas with delicate objects, or areas a bit higher up than fly swatter range. A salt gun should make it much easier to ensure a bug kill in those situations if you patiently aim before firing. Again, that seems like a massive advantage to me. Lastly, swatters tend to get nasty bug parts and germs all over them, which can get transferred to your walls or leave a mess to clean off of the swatter if you want to keep it sanitary. The fact that a salt gun doesn't have to make physical contact with an insect to kill it seems like it should allow you to entirely avoid that issue. That could be a massive feature to someone who prefers keeping their home and most of its contents sanitary. I admittedly wrote this before trying one, but it seems like it should easily accomplish all of those benefits. Is that a mistaken impression?

I have the Bug-a-salt 2.0, and with my experience it’s way better than a fly swatter. 1. The sneak attack. Flies are hardwired to fly away as soon as it sees a shadow, or movement. So with the Big-a-salt you can put some distance between you and the fly, out of range of the fly’s senses, and kill it. 2. It’s virtually mess free killing. A fly when smacked with something, will splatter it’s guts everywhere, leaving a purplish red stain on either your windows, or food dishes, causing excessive clean up. 3. Mid air kills. No more waiting for a fly to land on something. If you see it flying a pre determined flight path, use your skeet shooting skills and take it out mid air. 4 splattered flies attract more flies. Although more flies equals more fun and target practice, when you smash a fly, it’s buddies are gonna get a whiff of it, and come to the rescue, which inside your house you don’t need. 5. Bugs hate salt. So as you shoot you’re actually deterring more bugs from being attracted to the area, so the number of flies wanting to be in your house goes down. I live on a farm so before Bug-a-salt, flies would be in the house constantly, and the fly swatter would only attract more. It was a constant battle every year until wintertime. Now this year, I’ve seen maybe just a few flies in the house, all of which were one shot one kills. So from my experience, it’s way way better than a fly swatter. The Price of it, is out weighed by the fun, and the enjoyment of having a peaceful fly free home living space. But if you look at the technology that it is, it’s quite a complex item. It isn’t a simple nerf gun that shoots salt instead of nerf darts. It took a lot of trial and error to make something like this, and it’s value is at a level that, should it wear out, or break I’d be happy to buy it again. It works really really well, and the amount of shots I get from such a small amount of salt is incredible it’s around 80 shots per reload. Which is a lot of fly killing fun. If your on the fence about paying the money for it, I say your home living space can’t afford to do without it. Once you master it, your home will too be fly free. And on the plus side if you want to sharpen your skills with it all you need is some aluminum foil. Draw a target with a marker, and you can target practice with it.
the only thing that noone is talking about is how much salt does is use? you find salt on the floors in your house ? you need to pas a vacuum after each shot to clean the salt?
Another advantage of the Bug-a-salt is you can get flies that land in tight quarters where a flyswatter won't fit, or if it lands on a object that swinging a flyswatter would knock over and cause a mess, or break something. I've had my for about 3 years, and I use it mostly for the small German roaches that are stupid enough to show themselves. It works great on them. We also have the jumbo size "B-52" American roaches that resemble land-lobsters. These guy's require a "Red Ryder" as the salt blast will not penetrate their hard exterior back. A couple times when they happen to be crawling on the outside of my screen door, and thus exposing their soft belly, a blast of salt at point blank range thru the screen, and into their vulnerable undersides has knocked them to the ground, but still requires a second or third blast to finish them off. A Daisy Red Ryder a better option, but be careful, or you'll shoot your eye out. 😜
I got the 2.5 and though I've NEVER missed a fly, but me being the competitive country boy type, I'm on a mission to find the 3.0. Let's be honest, when you want the job done right you go for the best!
I have to say, your assessment that it has no practical advantages over a flyswatter is extremely off-base. The versatility of being able to shoot, rather than physically hit, is a huge plus. Sometimes a flyswatter doesn't fit into a nook or cranny. Plus it's much slower. I had to use one of these to knock a roach off of a high, unreachable ceiling. I don't know of any other flyswatter that can do that!
3.0 black fly edition, laser with pressure pad, white light attached on the the side, reflex sight, GBRS group t-shirt. Remember to be in a high or low ready, enter room dynamically, getting out of the fatal funnel and taking down any threats (flies) with speed and aggression. Depending on the threat level, say a wasp, or multiple known threats, consider stacking up on the doorway and enter with a team maybe even throwing in a flash bang in extreme cases. Hope this helps!
i want to see a modified bugasalt...its obviously spring powered right? with a plunger tube etc what if you put a more powerful spring and there and or improved the air seal it could be much more fun
The spring is already damn stiff to pump against. The more you use it, the more skin oils accumulate on the plastic pump, making it difficult to compress the spring. On the other hand, maybe it's time to get Nerf on board and make ejecting "fly-shot" shells?
I work at a fertilizer plant during planting seasons. When we aren't hauling it out to farmers, we just sit in the shop swatting flies. I need one of these lol
I bought this product about 2 years ago and I'm still using it. I prefer to use kosher salt as opposed to table salt. It's like the difference between birdshot and buckshot. Most of the time the kosher salt turns the offending flying insect into a black and red smear. If not, I'll pump again and hit it point blank while it's stunned. I'm almost 50 and very out of shape, and had no issue cocking this device repeatedly. I also recommend the laser sight.
Just got mine and have already taken out a few of my biggest pests this time of year, house centipedes. From about 3 feet away this kills them in one shot, and it's much cleaner than smearing one on my wall.
Just tore my ACL and my meniscus in the same knee, couch logged and gotta say I purchased this so i did not have to get up every 10 minutes and risk hurting myself to kill a fly, best purchase ive made in many many years, its like hunting but i get to sit down in my recliner
I use kosher coarse salt, it's like buckshot. I use one with even size granules. Kills wasps with one shot most of the time. Shot myself in the leg and it bled.
@@prettypinkmma7770 Less friction while the salt leaves the barrell, hence reducing drag and increasing speed. And the faster its travelling the less its affected by wind as well. So I believe it
I recall as a child, a yard-stick and a handful of rubber bands, I would run up triple-digit body counts on flies in an afternoon. Maybe I should try one of these, just to see if I still have “The Right Stuff”…😜
This is much more effective than a fly swatter I've found, especially when they fly near things I don't wanna knock over or break. When I get close enough to swat them they fly away but this thing lets you sneak up of them. I haven't missed yet!
We've had ours about a year and a half, we live in an area where there are tons of red wasps and yellow jackets (even our pool skimmer as 8 - 12 every day when I empty it). I've shot several dozen wasps with it, I've never been able to kill a wasp with ours (3.0 Black Fly Edition). Even when a wasp or two has dropped onto the gravel drive, I've shot the thing over and over until I get so tired of pumping the bug a salt that I just stomp it dead. But even the ones that I was able to drop to the gravel, I had to get so close I am not sure why the thing didn't fly away. Any further and I hit them, they get blown off the surface usually but are more than able to just fly off.
I'm going to have to disagree about the fly swatter vs the Bug a Salt 🧂, I'm not very good with a fly swatter, trying to creep up on one before it flies away is half the battle and then accuracy is another problem and finally, at least in our case, using a fly swatter with the metal handle and swinging it fast enough to be quicker than the fly, the handle usually bends in mid-air and then I have to bend it back into shape while hanging my head in defeat after the fly goes off to the coffee table laughing at me 🤣. So I think with those factors alone it's worth the $ to add this to my arsenal!
Love my Black Fly Edition. I took out a Lantern Fly right away. Pairing this with my electric fly swatter makes for a fun day, and my 22 for chipmunks as well. Yeah the chiomunks are digging up my leach field so yeah they gotta go.
It's $50+ in my area but I was recommended to pick one up due to the entertainment value and effectiveness of it. Right now I use the electric ⚡ fly swatter, I have about 5 of them in the house and all 5 about equals the price of one salt gun 👍🏾
Just received mine from Amazon. This thing is awesome! Not only does it kill all insects, at least all of them I’ve hunted around the house, but it’s also a ton of fun. My kids use it more than I do. Very very effective on spiders that like to maneuver on ceilings out of reach. I hate using any type of spray or chemicals, the Bug-A-Salt 3.0 is a state of the art Street Sweeper for pesky house insects.
I dont get it,this makes 0 sense... If you have a bug problem, DO NOT KILL THE SPIDERS... they are there to get those bugs ppl cry about.. kill the spiders you're going to have more bugs..
@@chicofromph33nix64I’m a weirdo too that likes to save bugs, even spiders, who at one time I was absolutely terrified of. But, I came to a realization with people who kill bugs. When spiders get frightened after you accidentally invade their homes, they bite with intent to kill. It’s the same for people. Spiders accidentally invade homes, and people get scared and kill them. So, there’s my devils advocate for today.
Informative video, but you said that there's only 2 differences between the gun and a fly swatter. I have to disagree. i just purchased a Bug-a-Salt for my lunchroom at work. A flyswatter cant get into the Tube lights that runs across the ceiling, which by the way the flies seem to always run to and hide in....along with other nooks and crannies, but this gun does the trick. Just thought you should know.
The one bug that the bug a salt is a god send for is the stink bug. Even at a few feet, it'll stun if not kill. Follow up with a close range shot while they are stunned. Or if you have the seething hatred I do for stink bugs, 10-20 follow up shots at the corpse of a stinkbug.
I have a spider that took up residence on one of my window sills. Sometimes when you hit the fly, it just stuns them, so I'll grab the stunned fly and drop it into the spider web! I think she's starting to like me!😂
@@somedrytoast2307 cheap salt, saxa is too fine, you want a table salt but as coarse as you can find. Aldi salt seems quite good, it comes from Germany, Saxa comes from Cheshire and is a bit fine. You need to be no more than 10 inches from your target for a kill shot. Wait until the wee fecker has landed, then toast him. It's essentially a replacement for a swatter. You can knock them off the wing and but it tends to stun them so you need to squash them
well i live in australia so flies are a pain in the ass, and worst case scenario it works as pepper spray if i get attacked by something bigger and more hostile i can aim for the eyes to help myself make a quick get away
I mean… It *is* gonna kill bugs better than a fly swatter. They have more reaction time with the swatter, are oftentimes more awkward to reach with a limited-reach swatter. The gun they don’t have a chance at all. So yeah.
I find the best technique for wasps is to shoot them, which shreds their wings and disables their flight, allowing you to step on them without them potentially flying at you and stinging you.
The problem is, if you miss then you’re probably going to get stung. And stepping on them releases a pheromone that will make other nearby wasps attack you.
@@KelABN actually them not being dead and sort of "screaming" atracts more wasps , the idea of traping them and not killing them is what's making wasp traps work so well
I love my BaS 3.0! I'd add that compared to a pest spray (like RAID) it doesn't put chemicals into your house (which you don't want if you have kids or pets). It also does a good job on spiders, though I prefer to catch them and take the outside since they are good bugs. But if you need to get rid of a spider in weird corner where you can't catch it (or a high ceiling), it does a good job but you have to shoot it from 6" away. I've taken out flies from 2 ft and more. I think the instructions say "up to 3 ft". I now bring it with me whenever I'm invited to a BBQ. :-) As for the entertainment value, I got one for my neighbour and she will sit on her back patio and take out whatever flies by. The day I got it for her, she was all giggles the next day telling me about all the things she shot. As for spread, I tested on aluminum foil. From 3ft, about 10", from 1.5ft, about 5" and from 6" away it blew a 3/4" hole through the foil. Have since bought one for each of my kids and a couple buddies. My son-in-law sends me videos once in a while when he shoots something. I told my son not to use it on wasps, but he was a able to isolate one and told me it took 5 shots. But you can search youtube and find many videos explaining (and showing) why using on wasps is a bad idea, especially if near their nest. That's a job for their new Shred-R.
Even when you do kill flies you still need to pick them up with tissue. I just got a 2.0 today and my overall assessment is even when it doesn't kill with the initial blow it still stops them from flying. Then you can just grab a tissue and clean up any dead ones.
So I modified my bug-a-salt. I glued the safety so I no longer have to worry about that. And I taped a pack of pocket tissues to the side so I'll have some tissues always handy to pick up dead bugs with.
A dollar fly swatter is crazyness. Want a fly swatter one is better to get a really good fly swatter for 10 or 15 dollars. For bug a salt 3.0 it is the best one on the market. I have version 1, 2 and now 3 the black fly edition. Bought a second 3.0 in orange crush to keep in my trailer at the park so their is no mistake thinking I am shooting projectiles. CHEERS!
This Bug-a-Salt gun is a fantastic invention. It has created a brand new sport: Fly Hunting. Flies are pests you don't want around. Now I want to see them, so I can shoot them with my Bug-a-Salt gun. I stepped up the next level. I installed a laser sight on the barrel (Amazon) and put up a fly trap in my backyard. I usually don't miss when I shoot at a fly.
can it be used to salt my ladies potato from across the table or room? at what range could it be expected to make a reasonable potato salting? Will it shoot pepper, too?
if used indoor, Is it troublesome to clean up? I read it shoots a small bit of salt, but the salt is still gonna stay around the house floor, perhaps unable to see where it spreads. and attract insects who consume salt.
I actually bought the exact same salt gun today at ace hardware and I got it for 20 bucks and I spent all day outside by my pond shooting wasps and it is amazing would recommend. (It’s also amazing against mosquitoes)
Put a laser on it, you won't miss! I can't disagree with your comparison to a fly Swatter more. How do you kill a fly that's in the top inside corner of a window with a fly swatter... you can't. We left a window open one night and the next morning I killed over 30 flies in about 5 minutes. Try that with your $1 fly swatter. Best $40 I ever spent 👍

Thank you so much for this detailed review! Just got this for father's day, about to go have some fun!
Enjoy. Happy Father’s Day
@@DadHut thank you!
when the wife says no more guns you get more and dont tell the wife
Daisy Red Ryder a better option, but be careful, or you'll shoot your eye out. 😜
I got the 2.5 and though I've NEVER missed a fly, but me being the competitive country boy type, I'm on a mission to find the 3.0. Let's be honest, when you want the job done right you go for the best!
Lol the all out war I’m imagining between me and five of my friends vs a bunch of wasps is epic
These guns are great! I have the black fly edition 3.0. It’s tons of fun.
One time I swatted a fly so hard with a magazine it actually impregnated into the wall leaving like a perfect fossil.
Wtf? Lol you anti fly swat team? Be ready for real swat lol
i want to see a modified bugasalt...its obviously spring powered right? with a plunger tube etc what if you put a more powerful spring and there and or improved the air seal it could be much more fun
While that's possible, the company may find it hard to pass customs and laws because that design could be dangerous.
@Christian Constitutionalist load a pellet gun with salt. Great idea.
@@mystuff1405 They already make a co2 version.
The spring is already damn stiff to pump against. The more you use it, the more skin oils accumulate on the plastic pump, making it difficult to compress the spring. On the other hand, maybe it's time to get Nerf on board and make ejecting "fly-shot" shells?
There's no reason to kill a grasshopper. Lol
I love my Bug Gun had it for 3 or 4 years still works great
If you put rem oil on a q tip and lube the barrel it gives it more power. i killed a bald faced hornet in 2 shots and blew him apart.
Wait what? How does that improve the "ballistics"
@@prettypinkmma7770 Less friction while the salt leaves the barrell, hence reducing drag and increasing speed. And the faster its travelling the less its affected by wind as well. So I believe it
Just don't go overboard and drip it in there, less is more. Something dry, like silicone spray may be ideal..
You can use it to kill flies on the window by shooting between the slats on the vertical blinds. It's also as stated just so much fun as well.
I've stunned a few shooting through screens or sheer curtains!
Had the v1 now just ordered v3!! Can't wait!
I love this thing! It's really well made and solid. Here in SE Pennsylvania we have a lantern fly problem and this gun makes it fun to thin the herd.
I would like to help out with taking out those lantern flies. Thankfully we don't have them in Kansas.
I have two of them, worth it! A runner up is the electric fly swatter, that takes some skill to use
Me walking into a room of flies with my Bug Assault Black Fly 3.0.:”It’s about to be Pee Pee pants city up in here”
Flies:👁👄👁
Noir edition
Initial tryout shot on a black widow at very close range, a foot or less was 100 percent effective. Crumpled up and fluid’s present.
I use coarse kosher salt in mine and it works wonderfully way better than the fine sea salt
Coarse sea salt is not consistent compared to the kosher that I tried. Try it Y’all selves😉
Anyone using sand?
I think that Sand will clog it up
I'm going to have to disagree about the fly swatter vs the Bug a Salt 🧂, I'm not very good with a fly swatter, trying to creep up on one before it flies away is half the battle and then accuracy is another problem and finally, at least in our case, using a fly swatter with the metal handle and swinging it fast enough to be quicker than the fly, the handle usually bends in mid-air and then I have to bend it back into shape while hanging my head in defeat after the fly goes off to the coffee table laughing at me 🤣.
So I think with those factors alone it's worth the $ to add this to my arsenal!
Also when I swing, I feel like I'm playing badminton in middle school. I was very bad at badminton in middle school.
@@humbughumbughumbug 🤣
It's just so much fun. It turns a chore into a game.
I've had great fun with mine, I've even got the Lazer sights lol
Just purchased one from Sam's Club on clearance for $17. Can't wait to put it to use!
That’s a steal bud, nice find
I bought mine at a gun show. They had an optional lazer pointer that fits the gun for $10. Works better and my kill ratio is higher.
I really like my electric fly swatter and when the flies pop, but this is going to make sitting on the porch a lot more fun.
They are fun, no doubt about it
I live in the “People’s Republic of Illinois.”
Gov Pritzker banned these “a salt weapons.”
Amazingly accurate. But you must wear eye protection especially for point blank shots on a window.
Aim right above the fly. Works every time.
Thank you definitely answered my question on which one to buy… is the pistol version more powerful than this 3.0 you demonstrated? Do you know ?
Yes it is co2 powered but it’s also very expensive
I think she's starting to like me!😂
Not a bad idea
@@DadHut pre-seasoned!🤣
I have a pretty slow life, these days😂
Great review. Thanks for the honesty.
It gets rid of bugs and salts your food at the same time. Most entertaining salt shaker ever?!
I have a 3.0, works best 3 to 4 ft away especially good vs housefles, UK table salt might be a bit fine for Bluebottles and wasps
You can knock them off the wing and but it tends to stun them so you need to squash them
@@somedrytoast2307 happy hunting!
well i live in australia so flies are a pain in the ass, and worst case scenario it works as pepper spray if i get attacked by something bigger and more hostile i can aim for the eyes to help myself make a quick get away
cant wait to get mine in the mail i wonder how it would go against the typical aussie spiders
Excellent review, thanks for posting.
Very well explained! Interesting video thank you
I mean… It *is* gonna kill bugs better than a fly swatter. They have more reaction time with the swatter, are oftentimes more awkward to reach with a limited-reach swatter. The gun they don’t have a chance at all. So yeah.
Had one for 5 yrs 2 ,0 found not to leave Salt hopper full moisture gets in n cause issues ,but good fun
As for the entertainment value, I got one for my neighbour and she will sit on her back patio and take out whatever flies by.
Fly lives matter😢
Even when you do kill flies you still need to pick them up with tissue. I just got a 2.0 today and my overall assessment is even when it doesn't kill with the initial blow it still stops them from flying. Then you can just grab a tissue and clean up any dead ones.
The vacuum works good too 😉
@@ericstrang8452 yeah but usually more of a hassle to get that out instead of just getting a tissue.
I have a cheap hand vacuum from Aldi's to pick up if they don't splatter their guts all over the place. It's like a dust buster.
So I modified my bug-a-salt. I glued the safety so I no longer have to worry about that. And I taped a pack of pocket tissues to the side so I'll have some tissues always handy to pick up dead bugs with.
I loved when host said that they almost felt like they were torturing the grasshopper, lol.
Cheers 🍻...
That outro beat was awesome. Where can I listen to the full song?!?
Links in the description
I will say you gain the advantage of reaching bugs in corners and recessed areas that you can’t use a swatter
Underrated channel, definitely up and coming
Orion Delsener thanks bud
watched the intro saw dad hut, woodworking, guns, cornhole insta sub lol
Just picked one up on a BF deal for $30. Giving this as a secret santa gift.
Why kill a grasshopper? They are harmless.
They should add numbers on the side like the ones on a combination padlock to track your kills
You should try coarse ground salt instead of fine ground table salt for a superior knock down power.
Like pool salt
Well my kitchen has hanging lights on cords so I can’t hit them with the swatter on the cables, that’s why this would be good
can it be used to salt my ladies potato from across the table or room? at what range could it be expected to make a reasonable potato salting? Will it shoot pepper, too?
real men season their food this way
The new "salt bae"
I just saw the commercial with the French Chef….LOL….they show them every summer.
There is a language barrier between flys and people, but the bug assault takes care of that, (splat !!😃😃😃)
Solid review man 👍 thank you
Merica!
I love mine!
It works and its fun
That poor grasshopper...
Also, this gun will leave a lot of flies feeling a bit salty.
I just spit out my food 😂
I have used mine a couple of years and have found it gets flies much better than a swatter and is a lot of fun
if used indoor, Is it troublesome to clean up?
