We’ve done away with our dishwasher, a lot of our cooking comprised of pans and steamers so it was filled after one meal a lot of the time. Never was happy about how clean the items got, tried all ways of stacking but never happy. Couldn’t see the point of not doing the washing up straight away anyway. Now my wife does the cooking, most times, and I wash up and put everything away straight after. Surely James you won’t have much washing up, think about the extra space.

It all sounds grand. On a point of kids and safety, might it be better to have the hob tucked back towards the gunnels port side to prevent pans being caught by speeding bairns. Just a thought.

Coming on nicely.... I really think you should look at getting some Celotex or something in the roof, even if it's just 25mm.... Im afraid that spray foam that was originally fitted is just a token effort....

Yeah totally agree. Fill the void with some kind of insulation when you put up the ceiling. Sun beats down on the roof in summer and all your precious heat will go out through the ceiling in winter. You'll definitely recoup your expense over a few years in energy savings.

At least the thin spray foam might still protect the roof steel from condensation... But James may as well use insulation boards to increase the insulation, rather than canned spray foam.

I agree too. We used some of the foil wrap stuff to add to our insulation. Insulates but doesn't take up much room. We did multiple layers 😊

Hi James. I’m worried about your offset hob layout. I get that it’s quirky but is it practical ? Maybe consider a more traditional home for it on the long worktop area opposite the sink on the other side ?

This new project is great James and like many I am enjoying the progress. I have been with you all the way on Sloe Patrol and will be for 58! You're a good man and a great Father and a talented boat builder.😊

Well done James. Great progress. Couldn't work out where the hob would be - an angled hob is what I have seen on many boats but up against the wall for human safety!

Personally I would of removed the loose batons and glued them back on with a good adhesive say ct1 then put spray insulation around them just so they are secure enough to take the load required of them

If you're worried about balance, you can always take out ballast underneath the 'heavy' bit in the kitchen. I would save the trimming with ballast for last, once you have all the tanks filled as well. But this is definately an extra thing to take into account when moving the kitchen to the stern.

Interesting that a Calorifier has now become a Calirifier? Must be similar to a Hob that is now a Hobs. Now I know.

Hi James only me sitting here on my boat thought I would give you a couple of my ideas for you to think about if you are going down the oil fired stove option fit a separate tank as you can then use kerosene much cheaper and cleaner burning then red diesel also in the past we made fuel tanks to fit on the roof in the shape of a pigeon box looked well smart and plenty of gravity.

Looks like your plan is coming together well. My only question is the placement of the dishwasher. Having it across, instead of next to the sink can be a pain, with wet dirty dishes constantly flinging water on the floor--which then has to be dried before someone skids and slips to a fall. So many things to consider....it's great to be able to design what will work best for you and kids.

    • @lapsedluddite3381
      @lapsedluddite3381 Рік тому

Glad you pointed that out, and agree it's a good idea to have the dishwasher next to the sink with the clothes washer opposite, definitely a more efficient work flow.

Hi James, great to see you pushing on with the nitty-gritty behind the scenes stuff. Not glamorous doing the spray foam, etc... but nevertheless a necessity all the same. The plans for your galley are well thought out and look good, the stove being diesel and with a back boiler combined is a winner mate 👍 😀
    Catch you next time fella

Remember that Project 58 has a different type of stern gland from Sloe Patrol ... So you need to turn the greaser after every move.

That's good positioning for the calorifier, how about building it into an airing cupboard? Vent grilles at low level and high level, battened shelving with 50 x 25 battens at 100 mm centres, clean linens in there and Bob's yer uncle, I love the smell of warm freshly washed linen. Also, isn't it possible to infill between the ceiling and the roof plate with Rockwool (at least 50 mm thick)? You'd need a continuous vapour barrier between the ceiling slats (or whatever ceiling finish you're planning) and the insulation. But what with all the rain, we now know that in the other direction, Sweary Dan's welding is watertight.

I was wondering if it would be better to put in solid insulation in place of tubes and tubes of foam? Is that a possibility ? you know , the silver backed plates of insulation ?

Narrowboat leapfrog! Loved seeing your plans. Carry on; Project 58 will be amazing. (Reuniting families in your spare time James--is there nothing you can't do??) I am curious about the ceiling insulation--even though the spray foam is done, is there some kind of sheet insulation which would improve the R-value across the entire ceiling and make sure it's more seamlessly insulated?

I’ve just returned from a barge holiday with my son on the Monmouth and Brecon canal. We had a lovely boat with an unusual bow configuration. It had an outdoor hot-tub fitted to it. Might be an idea for you ? Check out beacon park boats and look at the Owl boat 👍 best wishes and keep those vids coming

The morning after the school sports day before... We've all been there, James.
I think I'd add some extra insulation to the deckhead.
Are you going to T&G it, or sheet it?
    All the best, mate.

Grey water from sinks, shower and washing machine go straight into the canal. The toilet is a compost separator type and is disposed of on land.
