PB, please come back. We need your pedal comparisons during these crazy times
Goddamn this is how shootouts should be done.
Can't take all the credit - props to this 2015 video by Livingroom Gear Demos ua-cam.com/video/9nbGIHkUlV0/v-deo.html
THIS is how you do it, damn it! One of the coolest pedal shootouts ever. Thanks!
Theres always something with the NYC big muff PI that makes it stands out
I hated mine! I use the Basic Audio Foxey Lady now!
It's the massive low end and scooped ass mids. Works well at home, not so much in a mix IME.
@@50Something the foxey lady is incredible. All of BAs pedals are killer. I love my zippy.
@@LeviBulger I want the Zippy!
It's size?
There's only one thing left to make this great video more awesome: timestamps!
0:16 EHX Nano Muff
0:30 EHX NYC Muff
0:57 Mooer
1:52 Green Russian
2:46 EHX OpAmp Muff
I only timestamped the ones I would consider buying within my budget. EHX Russian is probably my favorite.
interesting! Everyone has such different opinions.
Why not just time stamp them all while you're at it?
0:16 EHX Nano Muff
0:30 EHX Big Muff
0:43 Vick Violet Ram's Head
0:57 Mooer Triangle Buff
1:11 EQD Cloven Hoof (Green Russian)
1:24 TC Honey Pot
1:38 Blackout Musket (Civil War / Green Russian)
1:52 EHX Green Russian Nano
2:05 Keeley Rotten Apple (op-amp)
2:19 Greer Tarpit (V4)
2:32 Wren & Cuff Eye See '78 (dual op-amp)
2:46 EHX Op-Amp Muff Nano
Awesome comparison vid, btw! Very useful if you want to directly compare the different muff types.
These time stamps are an excellent idea. Let one compare different pedals side by side. Using this method I was able to hear The mooer sounds identical to the pi.
The vick Audio is really cheap and among the best muffs out there. Definitely recommend for lead playing especially
Thanks, @@thebluesprosecutor875! I added the time-stamps to the description.
I'm honestly just rewatching to that riff sooo sick
Everything in this shootout is perfectly done! Thank you.
And this comment is perfectly composed. Thank YOU.
Thx for the demo. This makes things so much easier for me.
Loving the style of these videos and the sounds are great too; killer channel =D
The Greer and, surprisingly, the classic giant Big Muff were the ones that made me come back to this tab. Great job overall. Looking forward to more in the future =D
Pedal Friends Thanks! Very glad you like it. Love the name of your channel btw
Likewise! An easy sub for sure
You've been killing it with these shootouts!
Thanks! I need to check your videos out - you use a green screen under the pedals, I presume?
The Pedal Bored yeah I do! I’ve got a super low-key setup for the video potion, just my phone’s camera and a green screen.
Became clear after I watched a few - especially when you pointed out that the green LED disappeared on the Smallsound/Bigsound pedal.
Duuuuuuuuuuuude! Perfect! Just friggin prefect!
As always: great demo!!!
you gave me faith in you tube again. Thanks for the vid, love this format!
Adam Lucas Well this is very nice to read. Thank you
this is the absolute best pedal comparison video in the history of the world. I want a big muff op amp.
MyBrothersKeeper Thanks! It's about time someone said it. (Check out my more thorough comparison of the four OpAmp muffs in this video by the way: ua-cam.com/video/nvtvOY6_Gi8/v-deo.html )
i love you demos - literally the way it should be done! I also have a Classic Player JM and my three muffs (Green Russian, Op Amp and NYC) seem to not like that guitar. Surprised how awesome they sounded with yours
Loved the Musket, Rotten Apple, and the NYC the most. But loved all of these
Great Shootout. I know its Impossible to have Every Pedal, but there are 4 that I also like alot: Thorpy Fallout Cloud (my muff of choice), Skreedy P-19, the JHS Muffuletta is very versatile, new EHX Triangle ( nano-size ). This was Really Fair and Very Well-done.
Big Muff Pi NYC is the best Muff, it's so pleasing to my ears xD
Great book collection!
you are actually my new favourite youtube channel
Thanks!
Such a good video and so helpful!! thank you!
chollie You're welcome!
Best shootouts & also best book selections!
I'm running out of books. Soon it'll have to be cereals or something.
Awesome video.
I imagine this would be what "my" shootout would look like. Clean playing. No speech. With inclusion of a book. Classy, I would say. Perhaps the books capture some element of the tone....I'll have to read them to find. This video did as much to promote the book as the pedal. Great job all!
awesome. thanks for the vid.
Love your videos man!! Cheers from argentina
Thanks!
Great shootout thanks!
You're welcome!
That clean tone though!
New to the channel. Great work! Love that riff too
for some reason i really like the nano big muff!
You sire have a fine choice in pedals and in literature
The Big Muff NYC all day long! 🕶🎶✌🏻
I just sold mine. Sounded like jam.
Got the Op-amp instead. Huge improvement.
Yeah out of all the big muffs the NYC big box is really more of a toy. It's sole purpose is the solitare bedroom warrior (and a highly specific band setting such as : one guitar one drum set like the white stripes), it's utter nonsense in any kind of mix or band context
I'm feeling that Greer pedal man.
I like the Musket!
Just listening to the video on my laptop speakers instead of my desktop and the Musket sounds very fizzy - I could see it getting lost in drums/cymbals in a mix. Interesting to hear these in different ways, even though I made the video!
Musket all day! Great shoot-out, they all sound awesome.
Ha! I like that you like all of them!
The Pedal Bored not a one of them is a joke. You chose well!
Best shootout ever. Thanks to this video I made my choice: The 'NYC' Big Muff. I'm quite satisfied with this pedal. Thank you
Constantin Levin Glad I could help!
Very Good!!!😃
Thanks
The EHX OP Amp RI is hands down the winner. It ain't even close.
Absolutely agree. Great muff tone, thick chords, and the single notes still shine.
I think it's just how poor the ones preceding it sounded. Listening to it direct against the 73 Rams Head it's very close.
It really depends on what style you're playing. I would never choose an opamp over the green Russian, for instance, for gilmour style leads. But in this demo, because of the real basic riff he's got going, opamp does sound great. The riff he used is already kinda grungy sounding so it works well.
Yep i sold my NYC to buy one just a couple of weeks ago there's no contest.
Not just in smashing pumkins mode, Even in normal mode with my telecaster.
Ehx Reissues HANDS DOWN
Make this a fucking song already, my friends are asking me about this music after almost an year.
greatest shootout ever, i’m gas-ing so bad right now
Honeypot all day for me. And €32 new, can’t beat that!
Great Value. I'm thinking of buying a Rusty Fuzz as well.
perfect
I keep replaying the Big Muff NYC segment. All those harmonics - pure Smashing Pumpkins. No contest for me - it's the clear winner. Greer Tarpit is a close second for me.
I can confirm that through shit laptop speakers at low volume they all sound the same.
Ha! I knew it...
And if you turn up the volume they sound like a frying pan.
Except the Keeley, it sounded like shit.
We need a playlist of all your tunes. Or an album
Vick Audio is heavy, big balls to all their stuff
I liked the first die cast reissue they did, I built a clone to triangle specs and didn't like it, now I'm eyeing up the green russian or the opamp. The quest for the perfect muff is neverending.
Get the new Triangle reissue or the Deluxe Big Muff. Those are awesome
The Pharaoh fuzz is the best for me, at least. It's really true what the say about that one. But you really can't go wrong with the new fuzzes EHX are putting out.
I have five EHX muffs now - nano, bass nano, opamp, green Russian, and triangle. Planning to put them up against each other in a detailed comparison soon.
The Earthquaker D. Cloven hoof and the Electro/harmonix green Russian reissue caught my ear.
Noted that the C. hoof is based on the Green muff. Thought the C. Hoof sounded more musical.
Excellent vid! I wish so many gear vids would be as entertaining and helpful! Love the style soooo much! One question: why nothing from Stomp Under Foot? That dude is the muff guru. His rams head rocks so hard.
Alex Nennig They do indeed, but there's hundreds of Muff clones out there and I could not afford all of them! Even ones as good as SUF. Maybe next time :)
Anyone else surprised at how well the Mooer Buff held up against the competition? Not bad at all!
I wasn't a fan, but it's very popular. And cool to have a Muff in such a small package.
Great demo but I feel that the best weren't even shown here. I believe that the very best is stomp Under Foot and the second best is the reissue of the Rams Head by Electro Harmonix. But it just came out so there was no way on the Rams head reissue. 👍 Great demo man.
wren and cuff
The nano White big muff and the N Y C large big muff sound. Better than the rest of the clone version
I'm wondering how the mooer holds up to the new Triangle EHX reissued. We'd love to hear your take on them, you are in the room and can gauge the whole feel factor. BTW what are your settings on the Katana and how does the internal muff sound?
Winners: Vick Audio Violet Rams Head, EHX Op Amp. Runner Up: Tarpit
Now you need to do a shootout with the EHX V1 RI and the EHX OP Amp RI.
nitegoat1369 It's coming... nano BM vs nano Bass BM vs OpAmp RI vs Green Russian RI vs Triangle RI
Keeley stands out interestingly.
Do you think you could do one with the Nano Biff Muff vs Ibanez 850 mini? Supposedly the 850 is based of a Big Muff
Hey man, is that a riff of yours or is it a song? I totally loved it. And your video structure, with writings on the screen is amazing, I can totally focus on the sound and read about them while I listen, just all I wanted. Cheers from Venice body
I can't answer your particular question, but if you like this riff, you may want to listen to 'This Is Nowhere', a band from Thessaloniki, Greece. This riff reminded me of them a lot, especially the closing part. They are a little more into minor riffs based in D.
It's just a riff of mine, but I doubt it's super original. Just seemed to suit this kind of pedal :)
Thanks guys!
Are you playing some riff you just made up or is that already a song? It’s been stuck in my head for a few days and I really like it
Hey another great video. Would love to know your amp settings for the Katana clean channel. Where is your gain, volume, treble, middle and bass set. I'm using a strat i'm going to sound a bit thinner that your jazzmaster, but I'd love a bit of a yard stick for comparing. Again, I love the tone.
Gain at zero, channel volume maxed, treble/middle/bass at 12 o'clock, master volume about 10 o'clock. And then power attenuated down to 25W.
Much preferred the full sized NYC (my personal pick of the bunch) to the Nano. Do you hear much difference yourself in the room? Trying to build a mini pedal board, so compromises may be necessary...
Subscribed! Any chance of comparing bass pedals in this format?
Now I know why I dig the Honey Pot: garage rock grit. The others seem to be stuck in the stoner era or grunge. Not dissing those eras of music and effects. I'm tired of hearing similar sounds based on one circuit. Honey Pot is different in a good way from the others. It sounds like you can shape it to your tone versus it dictating what your tone will always sound like with the pedal on.
weird, cause the more mid heavy sound of the Honey Pot works better for stoner IMO
I have the TC Honey Pot. It's nice with a booster or compressor in the front too. But what version of the Big Muff is it emulating ? It's green, so the russian ?
The tone on the EXH Op Amp is way down. It slays everything.
I miss you come back 😢
I will! Once they stop building a house next to my definitely un-soundproofed one…
@@ThePedalBored please do
Love the selections of books as well!! Are you a physicist by trade?
Studied astrophysics at college until I lost it with the amount of mathematics involved. Now just a background interest in Popular Science.
Those are some dank furry muffs
It's never emuff. Great video!
That was a lot of muff.
It might be weird, but I really liked the Mooer and the Russian Green Big Muff
All choices are correct!
this my friends, is how you shootout pedals, you should shootout all the wren and cuff pedals, i've been dbating between the caprid and the box of war for months now
It's nice to do all one brand - got a shootout of every Keeley fuzz pedal in the works - but money money money
The Pedal Bored I agree, major expenses but still great shootouts
You said the Honey pot claims to cover Black Keys and white stripes, but that's actually the "Rusty Fuzz" that TC Electronics describes as such at least in Tore's video.
Funnily enough, they actually say it about both in their individual product videos
For me, it's gotta be the Russian ehx. Love that pedal.
The triangle buff doesn't sound bad at all, held its own against the Vick audio. Cloven hoof isn't muffy enough for me and I'm just not a fan of the green Russian thing, either coke s or ehxs new version too fat and smooth not angry enough, thst said love the musket which is based off that circuit but with so many tweaks the character can really change.
Sweeeeet
👍😉🇺🇸❤OP-AMP.........EHX
Mooer sounds identical to the OpAmp Reissue.
Simple and effective review. The Tarpit owns, kinda has a certain unnnkktch to my ears.
Padlock Infinity Interesting! In another video I compare it more thoroughly to the EHX OpAmp, Wren & Cuff Eye See '78 and Keeley Rotten Apple and I find myself unable to really tell the difference between the TarPit and the EHX original.
The Pedal Bored After repeated listens I think the EH opamp would probably cut through better in a live mix. The difference is minimal. The price is not.
Agreed!
Juat run a EHX Tortion into their Deluxe Big Muff and that will cover it all... You're welcome... :)
Came here for the pedals. Ended up buying books instead.
If you were going to choose one of the EHX nano muffs (or any other sub £100/$120), which would you choose? I'm tempted by the green russian as it seems to sound good on bass too, but the op-amp/nano would probably be better in a mix for guitar... Thanks for the great video though, definitely the best comparison on youtube!
Sam M I have kept the Green Russian, the OpAmp and the Nano. They're all great in isolation, but in a band/mix situation you need something that can put back those missing kids, like a Musket or the original Hoof. Or run a tube screamer after an EHX one to change the EQ shape.
*mids, not kids!
Great, thanks for your help! I think in that case I'll just for for the green russian for the moment if the others aren't great at cutting though either. I have an EQ pedal so I can probably mimic the tube screamer idea too.
Sam M interested to see if the EQ works better before or after
I will let you know! I'd imagine after would be more dramatic in shaping the sound, but before will preserve more of the harmonic content/fuzz.
turns out i hate them all... will stick with my redwitch fuzzgod II C ....sweet demo btw
EHX OpAmp Reissue.
Yeah, I think this is a pretty good option. Editing a video properly comparing the four OpAmp muffs from this selection, and the more expensive ones really are no better.
I may have allready mentioned this but all of the pedals sound so hairy which is because you hiiting it with the wrong impedance. Big muffs want or i feel sound better with pickups due to the impedance. Using the 720 is like sending a buffered guitar signal into the muffs which will make them brighter with more hair on top
I am confused about the Cloven Hoof, that I actually own: mine has Tone and Shift *under* Level and Fuzz. Here they are upside down. I don't know. Fantastic video anyway! have a nice day everyone
I had another look, and the Tone and Shift controls are under the Level and Fuzz, just like yours...
@@ThePedalBored there are many different versions of clovenhoof, I didn't know that. They actually changed the position of the knobs. Thank you for sharing these videos by the way, thay are all amazing! Have a nice day everyone
Hi, I'm trying to transcribe this little part you're playing but can't work out exactly what the chords are (beyond root and major/minor), would anyone be able to let me know what they are? Cheers!
YIIMM Chords are all on just the lowest two strings with the E tuned down to a D.
@@ThePedalBored Cheers!
But its a great video comparing the muffs to each other
And if there’s a tab or if this is a song could someone please tell me I love it
Hey, glad you like it! It's just a riff I put together for the demo.
The Pedal Bored if you can make a tab for this or a video showing you play it that would be AWESOME
Please try the daredevil Opamp
Antoine Cantin Looks like it'd be identical to the EHX one. Same controls, same Tone Bypass switch.
Nice. I have the BOSS Katana 100, the EHX 720, and an assortment of fuzz pedals as well. Not as many as you. But I've been wanting to do some OD and distortion shootouts with other pedals I have, using this set-up. Unfortunately one of us seems to be more lazy. Still on the agenda; just so many other things to balance.
Also, I own a few of those books, but I have to say I went through my "atheist" phase about 15 years ago. No offense. ;)
But I still love Sagan's stuff.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I also use a Focusrite interface, but I have the Saffire 6 (which is really just the "older" version of the Scarlett--a lot sturdier IMHO though.) And I used the term "pedal bored" a lot until I saw everyone else on /r/guitarpedals etc using it a bit later. Well, I still use it, I guess. It's just less fun when you're not the only retarded person around.
I don't own most of the pedals TBH - I've just 'borrowed' them from Amazon :)
Not in an 'atheist' phase - my degree is in Physics and Mathematics. Still fascinated by it 20 years later.
It's weird how the Rotten apple seemed dead. Were the settings off. I've been looking into a muff for Pumpkins and Gilmour. Was going to get the Ehx op amp, but from this video the ehx mini muff sounds more pumpkins.
I love the Wren & Cuff and the EHX OpAmp for Pumpkins sounds. The Rotten Apple is, I think, a very different animal to other OpAmp muffs, and has been tweaked a long way from the original by Robert Keeley. They also make/made a pedal called the Psi Fuzz which I think might be closer to the normal OpAmp muff. I certainly set that pedal differently than the others, because the Fuzz doesn't really come in until quite far round the dial.
Also, so much depends on hearing them in a mix - I think the OpAmp fuzz sound survives better in that context.
The Pedal Bored Is there anything that will do pumpkins and Gilmour?
Not sure I know the answer to that. Check out gilmourish.com - that guy has Muff knowledge in spades.
The Pedal Bored Oh , I'm fully aware, but he's strictly Floyd. Lol He'd probably say go with a green Russian, which to he sounds pretty close to the op amp, but that's only from listening to UA-cam videos, not personal playing experience.
This video shows exactly why a pricetag shouldn't lead us to buy a certain product over another. There are some $200 usd pedals that sound so goddamn similar to the $80 usd version that makes you wonder "Do they sound $120 usd better?".
And so often the answer is 'no, they don't'.
David Fucking Deutsch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ooh yeah
PHYSICS FTW
What's up with the books?
They're just for fun. And themed.
@@ThePedalBored have you read any of em?
@@off711 All of them! (Well not *all* of all of them.)
@@ThePedalBored any good reads? Noticed books changed with each pedal so figured you enjoyed books as much as tone. Might be of mark.
off711 Cosmos is a classic - can't go wrong with some Carl Sagan. Ditto Hawking. Brian Greene a worthy successor to both of them, and Michio Kaku's Physics of Impossibility is a great book. Warped Passages is fascinating too. And John Gribbin is one of the best Popular Science writers out there - so clear and understandable for both the Physics graduate and someone with no background in it at all.
Always hated the sound of the cloven hoof for some reason
It doesn't sound like a fuzz, or at best, a very restricted fuzz.
