- While practicing another song I'm working on (that will be up soon), I took a break and messed around with one of my favorite songs by TMV and ended up wanting to make a quick video out of it! I tried to keep the chorus bits and especially the tom break down the same as the album, however the softer parts in-between were nearly impossible to hear (made it hard to follow) in my headphones so I improvised most of it. Jon Theodore is the man. Single shot/take.

It's got a great tuning to it, but the head is completely drained. Needs a fresh one
It has a nice tone, but I think it sounds a bit thin. Needs those PHAT 42 strand snare wires.

I recently mastered that crazy snare-floor tom thing, but the ghost notes in the main groove always trip me up. This song is ultra difficult, props man that was terrific.
I know I'm replying to a comment from 7 years ago, and you may well have gotten it down by now but for anyone else that comes across this problem... Just play this song slowly. Understand what you need to do, then start slow. Build up that muscle. Integrate the memory.
Just so phenomenal. I come back to this video every few months, and it just keeps getting better.

Yeah, a lot of drum covers i see of mars volta stuff, a lot of people leave the ghost taps out. This song is like ghost tap central. I'm really happy he kept them in.

Unless you did a lot of post layering on the sound, your kit sounds amazing, especially your snare- crazy speed precision, and a graceful touch- those are the main tools of any talented drummer, you definitely are very talented, great cover; love the attention to detail on the ghost notes, cheers.

Bravo, bravo. Jon didn't write this song, The Mars Volta may have been De Facto when it was written but I have it and Citracaz Esp on vinyl as a demo. The former is A LOT different from the De-Loused version. Still the bands staple song. Jon changed a lot on Roulette Dares I think. I'd have to get it out and listen to it. Says that Blake Flemming was in the band so he wrote the drums for both songs perhaps. Cedrick did play drums for De Facto so he could have though I doubt it. I personally think Thomas Pidgeon was the man! He went from a tattered throne in a church to a set that cost as much as a house. That sudden change and the burden of having to fill Jon's shoes to please not just The Mars Volta, but the crowd as well. that took a lot of heart and guts. Theodore's playing for Queens of the Stone Age now which is awesome. Glad he's out there and playing. Also thanks for not using the obligatory "Stack of shit" cymbals I see in almost every early Volta drum cover vid! They're not needed and you proved it's all about the snare and hi-hat work. I tried a Paiste 14" pair I got in a trade but they sounded like they were over hammered. I had experimented to get away from 13" hi-hats long ago using matching hybrids and splashes even different brands so long as they were lareger than 13" and the top had a quicker response than the bottom. Also still have a few "China Boys" like the one you scored out of the used bin. Nice score BTW! Smallest I have is 10" and I really don't know if you'd call a China that small a China Boy. More of an effects cymbal but they sound great and lots of drummers are using them with or instead of traditional splashes. I love to see you do a Bill Bruford cover. Yes or Crimson it doesn't matter. Learning his songs are very rewarding!
