  • There is no real proven performance advantage to doing this, other than it helps to keep carbon from sticking to the piston top and it looks cool, knowing it is shiny insiside. Basically a dog and poony show for the customers, same as polishing the cylinder head chamber, keeps carbon from sticking, but other than that, not much. It was believed before that it would help reflect heat back into the chamber and not get a heat soak through the psiton. If you want a better solution, use a ceramic coating on the tops of the piston, combstion hcamber and heads of the valves. I have done that and it did give a marked increase in heat dissipation.
THe process is farirly simple, I started off with a 2000 grit piece of wet dry sandpaper, switched to a grey scotchbrite pad(ultafine) then switch to a 0000 steel wool. Applied a coat of mothers to a rag and hand polished9 my osn did anyways). They would have been fine as he did them, but I wanted them just a bit shinier. I tried using my buffbut it is old and hard as could be. So, back to doing it by hand. It works, a buff is usually quicker and definitiely gives a mirror finish, but that old rdried out one is all I had laying around. Unless I find another one laying around, which I may or may not have, these will do as is.
