@@GMHG777 they are B leaguers, find a casual rock fan ask them to name 2 songs from each guy. B league is not an indictment of their skills or talents, they simply aren't great which is much more than technical proficiency on the guitar, and guys who do instrumental albums have a much easier go at showing off their chops. But I'd say none of those guys are great songwriters. Rhoads..van halen were great songwriters using two different approaches. Cc is very good, he's certainly not technically great, but he's certainly better than the average guitar player. I don't even insult musicians on their musicianship when I can't even play an instrument at a passable level, buts really a relative comparison. I’m not looking at it from songwriting standpoint obviously, but Yngwie has written some very good songs early in his career like on Odyssey and Marching/Rising Force, now he’s just stuck in wash, rinse, repeat cycle . As for Vai he is a very good song writer had an excellent album he wrote with Devin Townsend in 93 ish called Sex and Religion, Passi and Joe while maybe not a “lyrical songwriter” when you think of memorable ear worm “radio” hits has a ton of very melodic guitar melody driven songs that frankly if radio want locked into vocal
Songs only would be incredibly hit for sky like Mystical Potato Groove Thing, Satch Boogie, Flying in a Blue Dream, Summer Somg and Crush of Love are all extremely memorable if you’ve listened to them with the same ears you hear vocal melody types songs.
