Hey Mike, thanks for bag method it worked great. Tried a pump threw dip stick I couldn’t get it past bend. Guy I bought boat from looked like he just drained it into the hall and thru drain plug. What a mess he made. Bag worked great. Thanks again.

Awesome Awesome thanks for watching & taking the time to share your comment. We really appreciate it. We are happy to hear the bag method helped. It’s definitely a cleaner method than just draining it out on the hull surface & out the hole...not cool 😆

DIY With Michael Borders yes it did help, thank you. I just purchased a 1983 sea swirl stern drive with a Mecruiser alpha one. Looking to find some good tips for maintenance on boat motors. The oil in the main engine is completely different than the oil in the lower unit correct? How often do they both need to be changed
Reb Lew
Very cool. Some change oil at end of season prior to putting it into storage for winter. Others change oil at beginning of season so the oil is brand new & fresh for the summer.
Benefits to both really!
By changing oil at end of season, you’re getting the chance to see if any water leaked into the oil during the summer. We all know what happens to water as it freezes...it expands! Not good for engine! 😬
With that said, you know that any water in oil has been drained prior to winter storage!
On the other hand, temperatures change periodically during the off season & depending on where you have boat stored, it’s possible that condensation can build inside engine & oil system...causing it to mix with oil...so some are more satisfied with draining oil after a long winter.
Hope this helps! 😎👍🔧🔩
Hi Michael, those threads on the dipstick tube are for hooking up a hose to. I've never heard of trying to fish a line down the dipstick tube, just hook up a washer hose which has two female ends & pump almost all of it out very quickly. Then you will only need a plastic cup to get the remainder out of the pan, & filter. As far as winterizing goes I personally like , and pump in a few to run the engine till the thermostat is open then cut the water and pump in a few gallons of antifreeze before I drain the petcocks on the engine block, & manifolds for good measure. I'm not criticising your methods, I've just been doing it like that for thirty years & have never had any type of issues at all.

Cool vid! Im a complete noob to marine. Just bought a project boat. I believe its a 76 Crestliner Crusader 775. It has the 165HP Mercruiser inline 6. Boat has sat for i would say at least 3 yrs, maybe more...was wanting to drop out the oil and filter and replace.
Do most these engine take the 10W30? And is it specific to marine application or doesnt matter?

Thanks for watching & congrats on the boat. We recommend referencing the owners manual where you will find the exact engineer’s recommended oil.
For our specific engine, it’s the QuickSilver 10w30 & we have a pretty good idea that your engine takes that as well.

good afternoon, i seen your throttle bracket is different than my 90 bayliner 3.0. is that one better than it being on the side of the engine?
@@FishingWithJo415
Thanks for watching, not necessarily however having it in that location is more convenient depending on who you ask.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders its more dependent because of the shift interrupter switch right?
@@FishingWithJo415
You can say that however your design is just as good.
What year is this motor? I have one just like it but not sure of the year
@@davidsmith3143
Thanks for watching, this is a 1989 3.0L
On my bayliner all I had todo was move the Blige out of the way and that same container you have fit right under the pan.
Very cool & we appreciate you sharing. Any & all helpful info is greatly appreciated & may come in handy.
Hope all is well. 😎👍🔧🔩
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders one oil change down. Unfortunately due to a cracked intake ill need to do another lol.
*Inspect intake before removing your head if your getting water in your cylinders/oil save your self the headache.*

Thanks for watching & sharing this. Are you going to be replacing intake? Keep us posted on your project
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Yes, I replaced the intake. The intake had slightly different port design but accepted the old gasket without interrupting the flow to the head. Well see how it goes.

Why did you use 10w30 instead of the 25w 40
Thanks for watching, our owners manual calls for 10w30. Keep us posted on your project.

How many quarts of oil does this engine carry? Thank you
jean pierre
Thanks for watching. This engine came in an Alpha model & Bravo model. Our engine is the Alpha. It takes 4 quarts. We recommend glancing at your owner’s manual for the exact oil quantity to be added as well as the manufacturers recommended oil.
Hope this helps.
Wath is the name the conetor the hose for put wather in the motor i need buy
Do you change the oil in fall or spring better ?
Thanks for watching & there are benefits to both. Draining oil in the fall and adding new oil will be beneficial in the event that there is any water or moisture inside your oil. Water or moisture inside oil can freeze and expand during the winter and cause issues.
Benefits of changing oil in the spring before the summer season include brand new fresh oil and brand new fresh oil filter.
We personally like to do the oil change in the fall after the summer season when the boat is out of water and on its way to storage for the winter. We like the thought of draining oil to verify there is no water or moisture inside oil.

Dwayne, I thought I saw in your manual it listed 20W-40 oil. Why did you use 10W-30?
Tim Dyar
😎👍🔧🔩
@@timdyar1860 I did use 20w 40 in my boat. I think maybe your question was for Michael borders.
Everyone says that the 3.0 requires 4 qts of oil. I drained 5 qts and after adding new oil, the dipstick indicates a 1 qt short. What is the actual capacity?

Just bought a 87 citation thundercraft Do I really need to winterize it ie, run rv antifreeze through it. Or just run the water out and leave the plugs out? Manifiold plug and block plug? 120 hp mercruiser
Lee Sires
Thanks for the reply & great question. The older models are fun & friendly to winterize. The absolute most important steps to take first is draining any & all water from engine.
It’s also always recommended to follow the preferred manufacturers recommended guide for proper & safe winterization. You can find a PDF manual online.
