LMFAO FACTS
The voice mail thing is the funniest thing I've seen all day hahahaha.
1:06 - treat yourself like a business
3:02 - networking
4:31 - this sh*t is expensive
5:51 - social media
7:30 - groupies
8:20 - physical health
10:00 - teaching
"this sh*t is expensive" is so accurate xd
One thing I've learned recently on drum set that no lesson teacher ever taught me was the importance of being ACTUALLY PHYSICALLY COMFORTABLE while you play and how much your audience can feel the difference. The best comparison I use is keeping time has to be as comfortable as driving a car for your. People eat, text, talk, etc, while they drive without thinking of the driving part. That's the level of comfort you should have with your sense of timing and limb coordination
I sometimes forget this but now I’m way more conscious about this and I stop myself when I’m getting too tense, slow it down and get it right
@@lucaswedderburn4789 it’s tough because nobody told me in that way so it never clicked with me until I discovered it for myself
Zack is really speaking facts when he censors every "fuck" except for the rawest one lol.
I never went to music school but the biggest thing I've learned about being a drummer playing for 20 years is that the most important thing you can do is find your sound. Chops are great, technique is great, polyrhythms are great, having perfect time is great, but when you can sit behind the kit and feel comfortable because you are confident in your personal sound and style, that is what will keep you going and open opportunities to play. I can hear a Chad Smith groove and know it's him instead of any of the countless other groovy rock guys. I can tell when Danny Carey is playing vs Mike Portnoy. Oh that's Benny Greb, not JoJo Mayer. It's an abstract idea but it's definitely real. Be true to your own self and sound.
Thank you for this.
Yesss all very good points man!
FOOLISH FRANKIE ❤❤
I was just in Memphis to visit the Memphis drum shop and stuff. I bought a cymbal and a pair of your signature sticks! Tell Robinson I said hi
Loving these uploads! Keep em coming!
AHHH I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE EVERYTHING YES TOMORROW❤❤❤
thanks for the video zach!!
Just coming to the end of my final year in music school and honestly I think it was worth it. It's one of those things that you get from it what you put in and after 4 years I have a great network of musicians and friends because of this! I also think the path it set me on was more direct in terms of what to practice etc.
Man, this video is soooo good 🔥
Good vibes and good info 💪
I had no idea you had a hiccup before you first tour! I watched your show on the web and thought the keyboardist was great with the group. Guess that goes to show how professional y'all are.
I've seen very few videos real-talk like this that are so useful and on point! Thanks man. NUTS❤🔥
What am I grateful for? The fact that you started this channel! After watching You the past few years it finally makes sense to me how to chop my beat to insert uneven fills. I.e.: insert a 6 stroke roll into an 8 beat measure and make it sound natural.
Thank you!
Yeah! Very nice and super helpful video!! And THANK YOU very much for all your videos up to this point! I'm subbed since you had like just 3 or 4 videos uploaded, now I'm having an hard time (not related to my musical path) but for me it has always been a joy to watch your videos 😁😁 your music and personality really puts me in a happy mood!!! 😁❤️ thank you zack! SMACK 😘😙 kiss from italy ✌️
NC reppin. Cheers from Raleigh Zack… you rule. Been following for a few years
i needed to hear that 🍻 thank you 🤫
This was great, thanks!
Just bought your 30 Dirty Grooves bro, thanks! Had a quick look & listen, you're a beast. Can't wait to dig in. It's 3am here right now so FUCK!!!
omg 12 mins video. I feel blessed to witness this. 😮☺️
love you my guy
I can't unhear "what the fk" on shuffle/swing beat anymore after this.
All jokes aside, thanks for your content man. I’ve showed some of your stuff to my jazz teachers and they’re considering doing some of it for a concert.
Voice-mail as the intro is craaaaaaazy 😂🔥
Ayeee your back, I’m not used to this type of content from you, but you make it work, thanks for these tips.
(It was fun talking in the discord server)
I was a groupy for Zack out in Waterloo, Canada - wondering if remembers me... Huge fan, love this video Zack
Networking is a big one for me, the last few years of my degree were entirely online during covid and I'm really feeling the absence of that community now. I'm starting to put myself out there more and trying to reconnect with some of them again to rebuild that social aspect we all lost there
the most important things I learned in music school were 1. the right technique for hands and feet, in order to play relaxed and not hurt myself. 2. if you consider chops, grooves ect are some sort of vocabulary, you can expand your language (drumming) by learning what your teacher gives to you. It is more complicated to build your own vocabulary in the beginning, without someone to properly show it to you. 3. taking time to practice and don't rush. Some things took me way longer than I wanted, but it was worth it, because the technique is much more clean now. 4. The most important thing for me when I grew up with drumming, and what I praise to my students is: keep your ego down, you are playing WITH other musicians, and the most important thing is to form a unity with your band, that people want to hear, you are not alone on stage. but it has to be fun tho anyway :)
very good advice.
Networking is important in so many aspects of life, and in so many professions. I recommend any uni or college students to get involved with extra curricular activities because of the networking, I know more than a few lawyers and engineer who have gotten their first jobs because they had connections made in some music or theatre ensemble. Not only do you get to know people, those people will know how you behave during the good times AND the bad times.
One thing I learned being in a theater group rewriting some lyrics was that if someone bothered writing lyrics for a tune, the lyrics must be heard.
thank you for the info
"music school" - and any education in controlled environments - with good instruction - is worth it. especially if you are just a few years into playing and don't have professional level chops yet. taking the time to humble yourself, learn, practice and perform in a controlled environment, fail in the same, and refine - is a highly valuable process. and if you have a scholarship for performance, take it. i don't regret it at all - and you won't either.
I feel like music school just taught me how to practice effectively. Being a concert band major made me realize I don't like concert band.
This was a super good video. Like, I can’t even think of a joke or anything. Just damn good lol
Ive been a part of different groups and ensembles for a few years and some paid well some didn't. I didn't go to college for it but rather just learned from experience and what my instructors or teachers taught me. From Church gigs to band, to indoor drumline to parades,to private lessons,it comes down to what you learned and how you use it which tbh I learned a lot from teaching others but also lessons I had with others. Sometimes you just gotta figure out yourself and see what's around
I just wanted to drop by and say thank you. This video was perfect and what I needed. Definitely need to work on health, and making stronger relationships. All of it is valuable, but they are the two I need to focus on now.
Also the thirty days of chops class (Drumeo) is still paying dividends and kicking my ass. Have a great week man. Much appreciated!
Thanks a lot for your comment bro. 🙏 ❤️ Glad to help.
Lol I needed this because I plan on going to a music school when I am old enough. 😂❤
That chain is 🔥
YES!!! Reggie being here to stay (for now) is really the best news I’ve heard in a while. He’s the glue the band maybe didn’t need but needed for when the storm comes a few years down the line, dig?
Networking is KEY!!
Zack I really enjoyed how educational this was and your overall tone. i feel like the ratio from serious-and-helpful to jokes was different this time around. not to say it was better or worse but that I enjoyed it regardless
saying this out loud i’m not sure what exactly i’m getting at or if that’s even measurably true but regardless i hope these comments push the video out into the algorithm
All very good advice. Couple things about music school that I learned or wish I knew. 1.) is literally half of the people I went to school with (I graduated 7 years ago) are now real estate agents. I don't know what it is about real estate - maybe the potential for high $$$ with low barrier to entry. But, those people who are real estate agents, a lot of them didn't really have their musical shit together in school. They were all good players, don't get me wrong, but I'm talking about stuff like showing up to class on time, doing your homework, showing up to rehearsals prepared - etc. All that stuff is IMPORTANT and you should take it seriously because you will make an impression on your teachers and peers one way or another for better or for worse. I went to school with a few people who are playing in big famous bands now who have won Grammy's etc, and ALL OF THEM that are now on that level, ALL OF THEM were great students. They showed up on time, they did their work, they got A's, and generally they were just cool chill people to hang out with. 2.) "Being a good hang" doesn't mean you have to be super funny or charismatic or super outgoing or like Jim Carrey level fun to hang out with. You just need to follow a couple rules - DBAA, don't talk shit about other people behind their backs, and generally just avoid drama and focus on the important things like music and your health. Let's say there's trumpet player A and trumpet player B. Player A is a 10/10 player, but is kinda quiet and keeps to themselves but is generally a nice chill person. Player B is a 8.5/10 player but is super hilarious and fun to be around and makes everybody feel good and have a good time. Well, both of those people are going to be a serious contender for the gig. But in reality, most of the time, Player A is going to get the gig, because at the end of the day, usually the music is the #1 thing that other band members or music directors consider when hiring. Last thing, 3.) in addition to your physical health, your mental health should be at the top of your priorities list. I went to school for jazz percussion and literally every single one of my peers at some point during school had to take a semester or two off because they had some sort of mental breakdown. It's REAL. Granted some of those people now have very successful music careers, one guy I went to school with dropped out and committed suicide a few years later. At the end of the day your mental health is more important than music. I found a simple solution that has worked for me - I just make sure I take at least one day a week to stay home and relax if I can. Sometimes I tour for months and this isn't really possible - but, eventually that will catch up to you, whether it's a few months or a years down the line, you can't work 24/7 forever and not expect it to bite you in the ass eventually. You need to rest too. I work so hard the other 6 days that I make it a point to do nothing for one day a week. It changed my life and has allowed me to continue to have a music career for a decade without dealing with burn out. Anyways, if you read this whole thing then thank you and good luck out there!
I love this guy
Used to workout but now I just do the daily walks with my crazy pittie and he’s right it helps with energy levels. Anyone can walk/jog and it’s so relaxing, just do it!!! I find myself way more productive these days
Groupies are CRAZY lol.
I'm not that known as a drummer, but my friend (and mentor) is and plays for well known artists, and got me to tag along on one of his tour gigs which was local.
Just being affiliated with the drummer of a known artist had groupies trying to take me home 🤣. One of them asked where I lived, and I said an hour away so I had to leave.. and her response was "you can leave tomorrow morning" lmao.
If just being affiliated gets this far, can't imagine musicians who tour regularly. Great advice 💯
😂🤣Young Buck, I've been playing drums longer that you've been alive, and I NEVER considered counting shuffles like "WTF." That's hilarious!
I also never attended music school, but realized its importance in networking several years ago. The same could be said about Film School. You can learn everything in the field, or everything you learn in the classroom just goes out the window as soon as you leave, but those relationships are important.
I have NEVER, however went on my own self-funded tour. You should make a video talking about what it takes to do that. Tips on how to do it successfully. Fun fact: "Groupies" USED to be an innocent group of fans who would follow the band on tour. They were the fans you'd miraculously see in Chicago and Texas, like, "WTF! Do you have jobs?" Then sluts became groupies...
How to know your priorities, weaknesses and strenghts when playing live. Knowing theese things will help you conserve energy and to be more relaxed. Live playing makes everyone nervous, no matter how routined. For me i have to prioritize: tempo and my fingers durring doublestrokes. These are prioritized because they are my weakness. My strenghts are: dynamics, hits, song structure and chops/soloing. I dont have to worry about those things. It rests comfortably in my head. This varries from drummer to Drummer
"Hey Jack MeHoff, I'm Zuch MeHoff. Love your fingering style on the bass. Let's jam some time 😉"

I shall now mumble "what the fuck" every time I play a shuffle from now on
the wtf shuffle had me dead 💀
My son plays drums in music school and he met you guys in Kitchener Ontario. He is constantly surrounded by great musicians and professors and collaborates with them on a daily basis. The best musicians there find each other and form bands. There's no way he could have had this exposure living in a small town trying to improve as a musician on his own. He has improved immensely in a couple of years. People who say you can get good without going to music school have probably never been to music school to understand its benefits.
Music school is heavy on playing and the knowledge of music, but very light on the business & marketing side. I have spent probably the same amount on coaching to learn the business side of things that I did to get my degree. In Summary your level of musicianship and your level of playing doesn't automatically correlate to your bank account.
One thing i wish i learned in music school is to not rush while practicing and to take things step by step slowly even though what i'm practicing may take a long time.
Cardio's where it's at bro I've been playing drum gig for the past 12 years. Only really in 2015 did I figure this out. I'm into mountain biking.. daily bike rides.. running... And the StairMaster is my friend at the gym... I do 120 floors in 45 minutes.
Im in music school right now and i see alot of the other players not gigging and there seems to be a mentality that they have to finish the degree and become “professional level” to start playing real gigs but the reality is you’ll never feel good enough if theres some imaginary benchmark youre waiting to hit you just gotta play
Make a video about how to clean your cymbals
My favourite drum guy Zack i back 😊🥰😙😚
Addition to your physical health point, working on your grip strength will help with your fast twitch muscle fibers in your forearms, which also helps with endurance... 😉
7:22 Did you just transform your little brother into a floor Tom?
Loved how you transformed "walk the dog" to wtf.
Music school may really widen your musical agenda..one could say it's worth the girth
hey girth is always useful
2:45 This is insane levels of petty holy crap man 💀
I think I get it from my mom 😅😅🤣
Physical heatlth!! As you get older, rock drums are a workout! The right technique also helps a lot!
For better or for worse, half of the group I play with consistently didn't go to music school. The network really is key, in and out of school
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO

Real bro
Is there a solid version of 30 ditry grooves coming? I'm just more a solid book kinda guy.
If you come to Ireland please DM the Lexies :))))
Yea bro come to Ireland
Number one thing I think music school should teach: Your ability to chop is not NEARLY as important as you think it is.
🥁Hello Zack🎷
I am 63yo pro Drummer from Switzerland
Every Word you tell the Youngsters in this Video deserves minimum 167 BRAVOS BRAVOS BRAVOS………👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Take care and go on with being you
STEPHAN
Ps.
My Parfume is (since ca.50Years) Karl LAGERFELD 😉
What I wish I would have learned earlier was, just because they don’t play drums, doesn’t mean they are wrong. Sometimes listening to other band members input will help your playing.
One important thing i tried out of music school : learn to synthetise what you're learning in the simplest way, to at least use the core of it. You'll find it easier to remember and use every part of what you've learned. Same applies to teaching, it's often the same way it has to be clear enough.
Take care of your mental health too.
Not only physical.
Art's a hell of a buisness! A really beautiful one, but know your boundaries! Don't get burn out!
WTF🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 my favorite PART!

Nathan is scaring me
Bruh. When I read the title earlier today I read, “7 Things I Wish I Learned In Middle School” 😂
I'm gonna be in the Eugene show, Are you open to giving me a small drum lesson? (I won't try and hold you to anything)
Barber: "what do you want?"
Zack: "Chocolate Ramen"
Barber: "say no more"
Wish they told me my principal balance on the loan will grow even while I make regular, increasing, payments on my loans for the next thirty years ;)
i forgot where i heard it, but it's true. 'if you can't explain it in a way an idiot can understand, you got some work to do'
Lol bro do you play Apex?? It'd be fun to play with you
all is forgiven [but we'll never book him for anything ever again]
9:31 well that was fucking insane
Music school actually made me practice less, although part of it was my own fault - I didn't have any background in straight-ahead jazz and became overwhelmed, and coped by doing my own thing, much to the school's chagrin. My school also didn't have any sort of technique requirement, like minimum tempos for rudiments (they didn't really teach that sort of thing very much, preferring to focus on music), and I definitely needed improvement in that area. So I paid a whole lot of money, I didn't improve as much as one would hope after four years, and a lot of the things I was taught didn't really come together until years later. But yeah, music school took a lot of the fun out of music for me.
I would say networking is the primary reason to go to music school, even more important than improving as a musician. That was the worst thing for an introvert to realize after the fact.
Am in music school currently, and yeah even my small ensemble director says that you just gotta go out and do the networking thing, no matter how much of an introvert you are, if you want to get as much as possible out of your time and effort doing the degree.
@9:46 😂
