  • The Nyonya Sarong Kebaya is a traditional costume worn by the Peranakans of Southeast Asia, consisting of a long-sleeved blouse and a long skirt wrapped around the waist. This style of kebaya was also the inspiration for the iconic uniform of flight attendants of Singapore Airlines (SIA).
One of the last Sarong Kebaya makers in Singapore, Raymond Wong believes in adapting the traditional Sarong Kebaya to suit the needs of the modern generation.

There so many historical error and misinformation in this video. Local Malay/Javanese women had always worn the kebaya. It’s sad how at 1:58, you’ve acknowledged the chinese wearing the cheongsam and Indians wearing the sari but then continue to say when “chinese, indians, malays and Eurasians are not wearing their traditional costume, they wear the kebaya” this is grossly inaccurate. Kebaya is the traditional Malay/Javanese outfit.
After the islamisation of Malaya, local women adopted an Arabic style tunic which they name “baju Panjang/baju kurung” to adhere to their Islamic faith, which is then later adopted by the “Peranakans”
Similarly with Indonesia, After the islamisation of the region, local women adopted a shorter tunic which is known as “kebaya”. During the colonisation if the Dutch, they introduced lace and embroidery on the kebaya. This was later then adopted by the “Peranakan”

Dia cakap betul nyonya kebaya dgn kebaya jawa tak samalah tengok betul sikit jangan marah, sulam adat chinese yg di tambah kat baju kebaya, baju panjang nyonya copy dari han chinese cuma di sini semua pakai sarung.

aloha Um... I’m not angry? Pointing out inaccuracy is not being angry? And I don’t think you understand my comment. I wasn’t talking about differences between kebaya nyonya and Javanese? I was addressing what he said at 1:58?

aloha you are aware that hsitorically, the kebaya and baju panjang already existed before the Peranakans? Malay women were already wearing the baju Panjang and it’s was later adopted by the nyonyas. It’s not at all influenced by the Han Chinese.
