Every single time i watch a video of Secretariat i get goosebumps. Both were amazing horses but to me in my personal opinion, never was and never will more than likely be a horse like Secretariat. As of today, i honestly dont think the horses now days have the heart *literally and figuratively* that Secretariat did.

Secretariat was in his own league. Taking nothing away from Citation and Eddie Arcaro. The greatest race horse of all time is Secretariat. Hands down, and the end of the conversation. The records, and his times, do not lie.

Loved this video. It was nice to see the jockey's faces as they were looking back at their winning of the Triple Crown. I enjoy seeing all the horses run, and I admire any horse that wins a Triple crown and the jockeys that rode them. Just winning a triple crown is major feat, so congrats to all the winners over the years. Will always love Secretariat, and he is my favorite horse of all time. He was just very very special.

Rewatching this reminds me what a great racehorse Sham was. In almost any other year he would have been a real contender for The TC, he had the bad luck to have to run against a legend.
Definitely, Sham was the real deal. Put a different jockey on him and who knows, in another year of course. No horse was denying Red that year, but Sham sure gave him some competition. Think it’s cool how Arcaro rode Bold Ruler, Secretariats sire. Ronnie was perfect for Red.
The more I rewatch Sham in those triple crown races with Secretariat, the more I see what a great racehorse he really was. Of course Secretariat was better, but Sham was damn good!
Wow. Great to see 2 great jockeys together watching greatness on the track. Secretariats Belmont and that big leap of speed in the Preakness was something to see. Citation made it look effortless and commanded the lead easily. Good sportsmanship here . Both jockeys deserve their place where they are immortal in the Hall of Fame where their prestigious amounts are as as well. Deserving greatness to the caliber we may never see again. Srcretariats records still stand today. Magnificent.
Secretariat only has one distance record and it's a dirt record. Hawkster has the record for the fastest 1.5 and he did it on turf, which is slower than dirt. Several horses have beaten Secretariat's record on slower tracks.
@jasonwiggins I'm referring to his triple crown Derby, Preakness and Belmont records. The second fastest record in the Derby is held by Rising Star a son of Secretariat. Yes Hawster was a great horse as many others like Kelso, Zenyatta and Seattle Slew, Seabiscuit and the great Man 'O War to name a few of the ones that have made their marks. There's many great broodmares who have contributed to the kings of racing. I love the horse more than the race, but if it weren't for the race we wouldn't know the horse.
When it came to Meadow Stable, I was a Riva Ridge fan. Have a thing against the Nasrullah line. Too much dissing of the great Man O' War, I guess. Big fan of his, had his pedigree memorized at age 10. That said, I remember to this day the end of Secretariat's Belmont. Sat in front of the TV with my mouth wide open. That was a Belmont I will never forget. OMG!
Citation won the triple crown 8 months after I was born. And Secretariat when I was 26. You would get clips of Citation in the waiting periods as fillers before the races aired on TV.
Sham would have won 2 of the triple crown races, not all 3. He suffered a hairline fracture in his right front leg and finished last in the Belmont. He never raced again after that.

Some horses have not yet developed as a 3 year old . Forego placed 4th in the 73 derby and went on to become one of the greatest of all time winning 4 straight Woodwards . Also Kelso won the big races at the end of his 3rd year , horse of the year 5 straight years and 5 straight Jockey Gold Cups a record that will never be broken .

Something spooked Red before the Belmont n he reared up n danced for about 10 sec. All who seen it DID say danced. People also forget Turcotte said till he seen the Longines timer n realized Red was setting a World rec. (check pics) Red was never asked 2 run, till then. He did most of the race n his own. A child kicked a bucket before the Belmont. This is what upset Secretariat. He seemed to get over it quickly though and ran his race! Did he ever:) He will forever be etched in history! A gorgeous, smart, docile and fast American Equine Hero!
I haven't seen this program since it was broadcast around 40 years ago. I don't know where you found it, but it is much appreciated. Arcaro summed up Secretariat perfectly in his last statement.
Ah but Eddie Arcaro did give a perfect answer to the big question which was the greatest horse. "I don't think that ANY horse could have beaten Secretariat on Belmont day. I've never seen any horse do the things he did on that day." The man was a gentleman and a horse lover both and he could not deny what he saw that day. The look on Ron's face at the end was like he was holding a secret - and I think that secret was - he knew Secretariat could have kept going - and continue to go faster each 1/8 as he did it. Let's distinguish the actual race from the distance of the race. His times were not records for the Derby or the Preakness if you look at the distances run. Other horses have run faster. Only the Belmont will probably never be broken at that distance. Closest is 2;26. Prove Out in the mud came very close.

Eddie Arcaro was a great jockey and a great authority on horses. He is right when he commented that depending on who you ask, they are going to say their horse, or the horse they favor is the all time best. He was also right, and I commend him for the admission, that no horse.....repeat NO Horse could have beat Secretariat on the day he won the Belmont. He further said, Secretariat did, that day, what no horse can do and no horse is suppose to do. And most people agree, some readily and some begrudgingly. As athletes will tell you, there is something they call the zone. It does not happen often, but when it does no one can beat you. Unfortunately, it is not often that the true zone (sometimes nowadays, that word is over used).....it is not often that the true zone happens simultaneously with a big, meaningful event or contest. In the case of Secretariat's Belmont race, all the stars aligned and he felt the best he has ever felt, mentally and physically and did something that we may never ever see again.

Eddie was still relatively young and healthy in that interview.,many years before he died.Before he died of cancer in 1997,in an interview i read, he did say he thought Sec was the best he has ever seen.He was talking about greatest moments that defy time and space, not records. People and animals possess different records of greatness and often,incomparable and unique in its own way.

No horse living or dead would have beaten Secretariat the day he ran in the Belmont , case closed ! Over 2,000,000 horses have been born since and STILL no horse has beaten Secretariat's time .
When a horse has no competition, it is called "running" not "racing." There is no strategy, you have your choice of position, you are not pinned on the rail or forced wide, losing ground. Most important, you are not pressed by a horse or horses that are pacesetters or stalkers. The multitude of complexities that developed over the next several decades with the vast improvement of the breed would have been extraordinarily difficult for MOW to deal with. The competition improved drastically, weights standardized as such, the number of foals dropped each year skyrocketed and many greats were upset by very capable horses or horses that ran outstanding races, but not consistently. The fact is that the 1917 crop was both small and very weak. Case in point is the 1920 Dwyer. MOW runs against the horse considered to be the 2nd best of that crop, John Grier. John Grier carries 108 pounds.....................again.................108 pounds. That weight is unheard of in a grade one race in the near future. An allowance horse might carry that weight. THAT alone shows you the level of competition whereby the #2 horse is at minimum 18 pounds the worse of the #1 horse. Imagine if during her prime Zenyatta's handlers arranged for a match race with an allowance horse. No one would show up and they would have been laughed out of the racing industry. Back to the 1920 Dwyer. MOW was finally pressed and forced to run a faster 3/4 fraction that he wanted to. As a result, both horse slowed to a pace of over 26 seconds per 1/4 mile over the final 3/8 of a mile. That is pull-up speed and tells you that both horse were spent. Dorothy Ours wrote that MOW sides were heaving like a bellows after that race. Abram Hewitt, who loved MOW, wrote that both horses were spent. Mr. Hewitt commented on the difference between running and racing. As far as imposts are concerned, the reason MOW, on rare occasion, carried weight was due to the fact that the horse he was running against stood no chance of winning. Further, performance under weight is the true measure of how a horse handles that weight and none of MOW performances while carrying weight were impressive. Now.....if you want to be a rookie, a fool...please feel free. Writing simple and stupid proclamations are nothing but a source of embarrassment that you likely do not realize.
I disagree. Man O' War was never allowed to run full out, and I think he could have beaten any horse, including Secretariat. That said, I think ONLY Man O' War could have beaten Secretariat and that's no small compliment to Secretariat.
I am no horse person and pitting famous race horses against each other when they could not race each other will never answer the what ifs. That being said, I am a fan of Secretariat, not only because of his extraordinary and seemingly effortless speed, but also because of his physical beauty, intelligence, and kind temperament. Other TC winners were not described as possessing the combined traits I mentioned. The fact that Secretariat's heart was a lot bigger than the other thoroughbreds and was in perfect condition when they put them down (too early, in my opinion) may point to the reason why he was capable of overtaking other horses from the outside and even accelerated with great ease as he moved past them. I suspect that his lung capacity was also double those of the other horses given the breadth of his chest. He was a freak of nature and it was a pity that he did not race when he was a older and more experienced.
I live in Brazil, here, football is the main sport, but of everything I've seen about all three crowns that have existed until now, Secretariat is the biggest of them all !! To the comment here about taking Spectacular Bid and Swaps out of the conversation, I'm a Secretariat fan and I think those horses are definitely in the conversation as they were great. I just think Secretariat was better. As far as the Bid goes, if you compare the times of Bid and Secretariat in the same races they both competed in (Laurel Futurity, Champagne, Derby, Preakness, Belmont, Marlboro Cup, Woodward/Jockey Club), Secretariat is better by some 50 lengths and that's including him running on two sloppy tracks. Swaps posted most of his ridiculous times out on the faster CA tracks as a 4 year old. We never got to see Secretariat run at 4, but I'm thinking it would have been absolutely insane stuff.
Both Citation and Secretariat had a kind, intelligent eye. Mark of a true champion. Poor Sham. Things would have been so different for him without Secretariat. He was forever an “also ran”.
An important fact that needs to be stated is that Citation not only won the triple crown in 1948 but he also ran a big stakes race, The Jersey Derby, the week before the Belmont Stakes and he won that race too. Some people complain that the 3 races of the Triple Crown take too much out of a horse in a short period of time but in fact Citation won 4 races in the same time span. Citation's record as a 3 year old is still unmatched.

Sorry to be late. You are correct when you say that Secretariat won the Man O' War Stakes in 1973 and you are right when you say that it was on the grass. The Man O War was a "Weight For Age" race which is for 3 year olds and up. This race was always run in the early Fall usually September or October. They would never have run him against older horses while he was going for the Triple Crown. Between the Derby and the Belmont he only won one race and that was the Preakness. Sorry but you'll have to recheck your stats.
The Man O War was run in October of 73. The Belmont was run in June. Big Red ran 3 races from Derby to Belmont. Citation won 4 races in the same time frame.
Richard, of corse, is correct. Cy's 3 year old year will never be match, as horses do not run 20 times in their at 3 year olds, or at any time. He won the Sysonby Mile against older horses, then 3 days later,won the Jockey Club Gold Cup, then run at 2 miles, and beat all the good stayers by a big margin. Citation won by more average lengths (if you don't count the 31 length freak of a Belmont)
The record times in all three of those Triple Crown races belong to Secretariat, 47 years later. No horse has come close. In the Belmont, none ever will. Ev. Er.

The late, great horseman James E. "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, during an incredible career trained three Kentucky Derby winners, four Preakness Stakes winners, and six Belmont Stakes winners. Included were two American Triple Crown champions Gallant Fox in 1930 and his son Omaha in 1935. Fitzsimmons record total of thirteen classic wins stood for many years until it was finally broken by trainer D. Wayne Lukas in 2013. Fitzsimmons was once asked "what do you think about Citation"? To which Fitzsimmons responded, "Citation is without a doubt the best horse I ever saw, and I saw Man O'War."
Arcaro was the rider for Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat. I remember reading an article when Arcaro, in his twilight years before his death, said, Sec was the greatest horse he has ever seen. Same opinion shared by another great jockey, Laffit Pincay.

We don't really know for sure how fast Citation COULD go. His jockey never let him go all out. But if my personal opinion was correct, I would have to agree with you. Big Red was built to run just as Michael Phelps was built to swim. It was in their breeding and they both won the genetic lottery. I bet Secretariat could even beat the fictional Black Stallion of Walter Farley's, and The Black was the greatest horse in his fictional world. 😀

One of the great tragedies in horse racing was that Secretariat was not allowed to run as a four-year-old. If he had been, with another year of growth and training, he'd probably hold every world record from seven furlongs to two miles.

He ran the last 1/4 mile in the Derby in 23 seconds, went from last to first before the announcer Chick Anderson knew what happen, and lets not forget the Belmont. We all look for that perfect race and horse and at the end of the Belmont we were able to see something that was supernatural called Secretariat.
Who would have won, an answer we can never get till we actually see them running together. That said, it can only happen in horse heaven. What Sacreteriat accomplished over any horse is not only his running but his style and swagger. He just looked apart from any horse that I have seen on a race track, hell I've not even seen him in person. And considering my comment was based upon a factual statement, that gives you even less reason to attack me. It’s truthful that Secretatiat was 16 for 21 in his career. That’s a fact. With his one disqualification, which I accounted for in his win percentage, that’s 81%. Without it, it’s 76%. But I’ll do 81, since he won that race easily. 81% is solid, but it’s not perfect or near perfect. In school, that would be a B or B-. How the heck would you, a person who has never met me think you have a proper grasping of my knowledge about secretariat? It’s mind boggling how you could respond to my post in such a stupid way.
It is funny how we choose our heros. Citation lost 5 times in ,5 races to Noor. Noor also held the world record for the classic distance at 1:58 2/5ths. A full 5 lengths better than Secretariat as well. But somehow, nobody remembers the mighty Noor.. And Secretariat was relatively slow compared to several known Champions. Ie..Dr Fager, Swaps, Spectacular Bid to name a few. He also struggled when he left the restricted ranks, and ran in open company after the triple crown. Losing to the long forgotten Onion and Phone out. And was never tested with weight. Yet here we are. Movies, documentaries, accolades for Miles. No way in hell he beats a horse like Spectacular Bid...yet no movies about the '' greatest horse to ever look through a bridle.. it is fascinating...
It's always exciting to watch Secretariat's Derby and Preakness and keep your eye on the right side of the video to see his nose show up and fly by horses. :)
No, back in those days they actually had true handicap racing, and if you were a jock showing off exactly how fast your horse was than you better stick to weight for age racing, as opposed to handicaps where they would pile the weight on. Arcaro was way too smart for that kind of nonsense. And Citation was such a great 3 year old that Jimmy Jones only ran him in weight for age races. But he broke down anyway, in his last race as a 3 yr old, after winning 27 of 29 starts in his first 2 years of racing.

I did some investigating into this episode, I found it curious that Turcotte looked almost as old as Arcaro. The episode aired in May 8th,1977. Ron Turcotte was born July 22, 1941, Eddie Arcaro was born February 19, 1916. At the time of the airing Ron was 36 years old and Eddie Arcaro was 61 years old so 25 years of difference between the two legends. Apparently Arcaro looked good for his age and Turcotte not so much. Just figured that if I thought that, someone else may also find it useful and interesting.
Arcaro and, kelso together were almost unbeatable he won abut 98 pct of the races that he rode the great kelso. It was like someone said the greatest jockey of all times at the end of his carear riding the greatest racehorse of all-times at the start of his carear. Sad really. He understood kelso like no one did and, he had those strong hands to handle the great kelso who was so freakin strong for a horse that really looked like a freakin deer at 900 pounds and was still carrying at time 12 pct of his body weight! That was more than forego was 17.2 hands and, about 1,300 pouds! Kelso was something else. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.

Riva Ridge and Farma Way were faster at 1 3/16 miles, Spectacular Bid was faster at 1 1/4 miles, and Secretariat never ran 1 5/8 miles on dirt- Swaps did and set a legitimate record. A lot of the claims about Secretariat are about races he never actually ran. The 2:24 flat, the 1:59 2/5 in the Derby, the disputed Preakness time, and the field he beat in the Marlboro in a then-world record time are very good accomplishments. But there's no reason people need to give him credit for things he didn't actually do.
At the time of the Belmont, Secretariat's time for 1 1/4 in the race would have been a new track record and his gallop out to 1 5/8 would have been a new track record. But because the race is 1 1/2, he was never credited for them.
Every loss he made as a three year old (the Wood, Whitney, and Woodward), he rebounded in the next race by winning those races in record time. The Kentucky Derby record still stands; the other two weren't broken for many, many years in the Marlboro Invitational (then-world record) and the Man O'War. No other horse could have done that.
Another point I would like to make that no one else has made is the fact that every time secretariat lost a race he would go out the very next race and break the track record. It takes a special kind of horse to do that.
With today's technology, Secretariat would undoubtedly have higher speeds on the Ketuncky, Preakennes and Belmont lanes, with higher records on the three lanes, as technology would show that it would be possible for the super horse to run much more if they wanted to.
I've seen other great Horses Frankel in England comes to mind first,, I've seen Dr Fagor, Zenyatta, but non come close to Secretariat the 31 length 2:24 mile and half is impressive, but non more impressive like that burst of speed in the middle of the Preakness, any other horse did this, would have been toast, but he won and finished strong all the same, really a miracle horse, I think Dr Fagor ran a track record with 140lbs on his back that was also special,, but I cannot tell when we will ever see another racehorse like Secretariat.
Dr. Fager won the 1968 Vosburgh Handicap with 139 pounds in 1:20 1/5, which was a track record at the time at aqueduct and only 1/5 off the world record.

Secretart worshippers like SoHills cannot make their case without mentioning time. "Time only counts when you are in jail." Absolute time is worthless. It is relative time that counts. You have to be faster than any other h orse on the track, get your nose to the wire first. That is just win. Looked at that way, Citation was a much better horse than Secretariat. Look at their records as 3 year olds. Secretariat ran 12 times and won 9. 75% Citation ran 20 times and won 19. 95% Cy had a walk over as no owner wanted to race against him, as it was winner take all. He ran against older horses 7 times and beat them every time. Even when he was injured in his last race, he won. No horse, before or after, has done this. Yes, Secretariat was a Monster, as Sham found out and could not have beaten him in a 100 races. But Sec was beaten 3 times as a 3 year old. Twice by inferior horses. Prove Out was a fine horse and beat him fair and square at Belmont on a wet track at a mile and a half. If the track had been fast, like at Sec's Belmont, it would have tired his record. That's how good Prove Out was. He was also a 4 year old, and gave Sec a few pounds. I don't know the weight of Cy's heard. Sec's 25 pound heart could be part of the reason he was a monster. Sham also had a 25 pound heart. It was his bad luck to run the same year as Secretariat. Forego would not reach maturity until 4, when he became one of the great horses. Sham was retired after the Belmont. He had been hurt, and Turcotte knew it. So he went to the front and asked Sham to follow him. Sham tried, but had to drop back and finish last. Maybe Sham could not run a mile and a half, but that does not seem likely. This was 1973, not 2018.

It is not just a large heart that makes a horse more durable. You have to have the right team! Ron Turcotte was the perfect jockey for Secretariat. Hand ridden all the way at the Belmont! At the necropsy of Secretariat, the vet said that his heart weighed approximately 22 pounds. It was 22 pounds of perfect!

The rest of the horses were window dressing. The rest of the h orses finished in 2:29 or 2:30. You can believe Sec was the greatest horse in the h istory of horse racing. I and nobody else is going to convince you that that is b.s. I'd love to see Sec race Sea Bird on a turf course in France. Nearco. Ribot. Spectacular Bid. Forego. Man o War. Citation. Kelso. Native Dancer. Little Northern Dancer. Count Fleet. Dr. Fager. Damascus. And scores of others. Sham also had a heavy heart. Maybe Man o War had a heavy heart. We'll never know. Citation won 19 of 20 races as a 3 year old, 15 straight. Did he have a heavy heart? What was Sec's record at 3?
Nobody knows for sure who is the greatest of all time as well. Cases can be made fairly effectively for several horses including Secretariat. For all the horses you listed, there is little doubt in my mind that Secretariat could run with any of them, let alone defeat them at his best. Regarding the turf, Turcotte thought he was 10 to 15 lengths better than on dirt. OK, I'm not necessarily buying that, but considering his records on the dirt, I wouldn't bet against him on the turf against anyone. Forego?? After the Kentucky Derby, Sherrill Ward said that he never wanted to face Secretariat again. Other than Kelso's 2:23 4/5 on a HARD turf course at Laurel and 8 1/2 furlongs where Secretariat missed a track record by 1/5th in the slop, Secretariat's times at the same distances as Kelso are open lengths better, and that's with Kelso having multiple races at those distances. During his too brief career ending at 3, Secretariat defeated at least 12 horses who at one time or another tied or set stakes, track or world records. Think about that. You say time is worthless?? These are races for god sakes - of course time means something. It doesn't mean everything, but it means something. Why the heck do people then pay so much attention to Beyer and Brisnet speed figures? I do get it that there are instances where certain champions were not ridden out in some of their wins which needs to be considered. You argue about times, but overall records don't mean as much as you make them out to be. Citation's three year old season is remarkable, but who did he defeat? Armed was done by 1948, and Coaltown didn't develop into a true distance champion until his 4 year old season. I actually think that Citation's performances at 5 against Noor are more impressive than most of his three year old wins. Count Fleet? Blue Swords was a nice horse, and that's about it. What do you think Native Dancer's record would have been had he been born two years later and had to race against Swaps and Nashua? Look at the sport of boxing. Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali have eight losses between them, but they are generally ranked ahead of undefeated Rocky Marciano by most boxing historians.
I've always thought the false premise argument to be the most embarrassing and foolhardy to those who use it. In essence, it's the withholding of facts that lead to a truth vs. citing information that leads to a false or distorted conclusion. For example, the comments referring to final times over 10 furlongs. Further, the criticism as to a single race of one horse, yet attempting to use that very same principle in support of another horse, again, indicates the prejudiced mindset of a fool. The truth is in placing as many facts as possible on the table. Ghostzapper ran in but 11 races over 3 seasons plus the one race at 5 YO. He was running allowance races deep into his 3 YO season, not running in a G-1 until late August of 2003. He ran in only 5 G-1 races his entire career. The 2004 BC was a great run, but as a mature 4 YO late in the season he carried only 126 pounds. Sec ran 1:59 and 2/5ths in the KD having never run 10 furlongs and at an age of 3 years, 5 weeks. Andrew Beyer rated the track a full second slower than Northern Dancer's. One analyst calculated, trigonometrically, that Sec lost a full 2 seconds due to track position. Chef-de-Race, whom I respect immensely, stated that Sec would have run the same time under 130 pounds. Sec ran the final half mile in an estimated 46 and 3/5ths while never shortening his stride and drawing away from Sham, who, by the way has run the 2nd fastest KD to date. Sec passed the 10 furlong pole in the Belmont, on cruise control, in 1:59 flat and pulling up in the MC hit the 10 furlong mark in 1:57 and 4/5ths. You see, narrative and falsities never add up. Withholding information, also, just doesn't add up. Makes for amusement, though.
What's interesting to me is that both Citation and Secretariat won with their heads up, like they were being held back by their jockeys. I understand the medical reasons for holding a horse back, but I can't help wondering what could they have done if they were allowed to run full out.

And Secretariat actually was not pushed to the limit. He was not whipped and was just allowed to coast along. I wonder how he would have fared had they pushed him to the limit. His feat would have dropped many race horses to the ground, and fatally at that.
I think if you compare a Beautiful Horse and a Beautiful Car. You'd have to say that Secretariat performed like either one of these cars, a Big Buick, or a Big Oldsmobile. Those are two Big Cars. Okay ...Now Secretariat was a Big Horse. Okay so, just like the Big Cars that start off slow, it takes a while to build up the momentum before you are flying along. That was how it was for Secretariat, he was a Big Horse and he started out slow, but after he got going and built up his momentum, then the was flying along and you couldn't stop him. Every single time i watch a video of Secretariat i get goosebumps. Both were amazing horses but to me in my personal opinion, never was and never will more than likely be a horse like Secretariat. As of today, i honestly dont think the horses now days have the heart *literally and figuratively* that Secretariat did.

Secretariat was in his own league. Taking nothing away from Citation and Eddie Arcaro. The greatest race horse of all time is Secretariat. Hands down, and the end of the conversation. The records, and his times, do not lie.

Loved this video. It was nice to see the jockey's faces as they were looking back at their winning of the Triple Crown. I enjoy seeing all the horses run, and I admire any horse that wins a Triple crown and the jockeys that rode them. Just winning a triple crown is major feat, so congrats to all the winners over the years. Will always love Secretariat, and he is my favorite horse of all time. He was just very very special.

Rewatching this reminds me what a great racehorse Sham was. In almost any other year he would have been a real contender for The TC, he had the bad luck to have to run against a legend.
Definitely, Sham was the real deal. Put a different jockey on him and who knows, in another year of course. No horse was denying Red that year, but Sham sure gave him some competition. Think it’s cool how Arcaro rode Bold Ruler, Secretariats sire. Ronnie was perfect for Red.
The more I rewatch Sham in those triple crown races with Secretariat, the more I see what a great racehorse he really was. Of course Secretariat was better, but Sham was damn good!

Wow. Great to see 2 great jockeys together watching greatness on the track. Secretariats Belmont and that big leap of speed in the Preakness was something to see. Citation made it look effortless and commanded the lead easily. Good sportsmanship here . Both jockeys deserve their place where they are immortal in the Hall of Fame where their prestigious amounts are as as well. Deserving greatness to the caliber we may never see again. Srcretariats records still stand today. Magnificent.
Secretariat only has one distance record and it's a dirt record. Hawkster has the record for the fastest 1.5 and he did it on turf, which is slower than dirt. Several horses have beaten Secretariat's record on slower tracks.
@jasonwiggins I'm referring to his triple crown Derby, Preakness and Belmont records. The second fastest record in the Derby is held by Rising Star a son of Secretariat. Yes Hawster was a great horse as many others like Kelso, Zenyatta and Seattle Slew, Seabiscuit and the great Man 'O War to name a few of the ones that have made their marks. There's many great broodmares who have contributed to the kings of racing. I love the horse more than the race, but if it weren't for the race we wouldn't know the horse.

When it came to Meadow Stable, I was a Riva Ridge fan. Have a thing against the Nasrullah line. Too much dissing of the great Man O' War, I guess. Big fan of his, had his pedigree memorized at age 10. That said, I remember to this day the end of Secretariat's Belmont. Sat in front of the TV with my mouth wide open. That was a Belmont I will never forget. OMG!

Citation won the triple crown 8 months after I was born. And Secretariat when I was 26. You would get clips of Citation in the waiting periods as fillers before the races aired on TV.

Some horses have not yet developed as a 3 year old . Forego placed 4th in the 73 derby and went on to become one of the greatest of all time winning 4 straight Woodwards . Also Kelso won the big races at the end of his 3rd year , horse of the year 5 straight years and 5 straight Jockey Gold Cups a record that will never be broken .

People also forget Turcotte said till he seen the Longines timer n realized Red was setting a World rec. (check pics) Red was never asked 2 run, till then. He did most of the race n his own. Till asked. That's amazing.
A child kicked a bucket before the Belmont. This is what upset Secretariat. He seemed to get over it quickly though and ran his race! Did he ever:) He will forever be etched in history! A gorgeous, smart, docile and fast American Equine Hero!

Ah but Eddie Arcaro did give a perfect answer to the big question which was the greatest horse. "I don't think that ANY horse could have beaten Secretariat on Belmont day. I've never seen any horse do the things he did on that day." The man was a gentleman and a horse lover both and he could not deny what he saw that day. The look on Ron's face at the end was like he was holding a secret - and I think that secret was - he knew Secretariat could have kept going - and continue to go faster each 1/8 as he did it. No one knew either horse's limit, but being mortal there had to be one. But as both are now immortal, I like to think they like to race each other just for the fun of it.

Secretariat still holds the record for all 3 races so it is not hard to figure our who win's these races.
Let's distinguish the actual race from the distance of the race. His times were not records for the Derby or the Preakness if you look at the distances run. Other horses have run faster. Only the Belmont will probably never be broken at that distance. Closest is 2;26. Prove Out in the mud came very close.

Eddie Arcaro was a great jockey and a great authority on horses. He is right when he commented that depending on who you ask, they are going to say their horse, or the horse they favor is the all time best. He was also right, and I commend him for the admission, that no horse.....repeat NO Horse could have beat Secretariat on the day he won the Belmont. He further said, Secretariat did, that day, what no horse can do and no horse is suppose to do. And most people agree, some readily and some begrudgingly. As athletes will tell you, there is something they call the zone. It does not happen often, but when it does no one can beat you. Unfortunately, it is not often that the true zone (sometimes nowadays, that word is over used).....it is not often that the true zone happens simultaneously with a big, meaningful event or contest. In the case of Secretariat's Belmont race, all the stars aligned and he felt the best he has ever felt, mentally and physically and did something that we may never ever see again.

Eddie was still relatively young and healthy in that interview.,many years before he died.Before he died of cancer in 1997,in an interview i read, he did say he thought Sec was the best he has ever seen.He was talking about greatest moments that defy time and space, not records. Even Pincay said that. When we talk about greatness,in a spiritual sense,we refer to moments of experience that endure time and space. People and animals possess different records of greatness and often,incomparable and unique in its own way.

When a horse has no competition, it is called "running" not "racing." There is no strategy, you have your choice of position, you are not pinned on the rail or forced wide, losing ground. Most important, you are not pressed by a horse or horses that are pacesetters or stalkers. The multitude of complexities that developed over the next several decades with the vast improvement of the breed would have been extraordinarily difficult for MOW to deal with. The competition improved drastically, weights standardized as such, the number of foals dropped each year skyrocketed and many greats were upset by very capable horses or horses that ran outstanding races, but not consistently. The fact is that the 1917 crop was both small and very weak. Case in point is the 1920 Dwyer. MOW runs against the horse considered to be the 2nd best of that crop, John Grier. John Grier carries 108 pounds.....................again.................108 pounds. That weight is unheard of in a grade one race in the near future. An allowance horse might carry that weight. THAT alone shows you the level of competition whereby the #2 horse is at minimum 18 pounds the worse of the #1 horse. Imagine if during her prime Zenyatta's handlers arranged for a match race with an allowance horse. No one would show up and they would have been laughed out of the racing industry. Back to the 1920 Dwyer. MOW was finally pressed and forced to run a faster 3/4 fraction that he wanted to. As a result, both horse slowed to a pace of over 26 seconds per 1/4 mile over the final 3/8 of a mile. That is pull-up speed and tells you that both horse were spent. Dorothy Ours wrote that MOW sides were heaving like a bellows after that race. Abram Hewitt, who loved MOW, wrote that both horses were spent. Mr. Hewitt commented on the difference between running and racing. As far as imposts are concerned, the reason MOW, on rare occasion, carried weight was due to the fact that the horse he was running against stood no chance of winning. Further, performance under weight is the true measure of how a horse handles that weight and none of MOW performances while carrying weight were impressive. Now.....if you want to be a rookie, a fool...please feel free. Writing simple and stupid proclamations are nothing but a source of embarrassment that you likely do not realize.
I disagree. Man O' War was never allowed to run full out, and I think he could have beaten any horse, including Secretariat. That said, I think ONLY Man O' War could have beaten Secretariat and that's no small compliment to Secretariat.
I am no horse person and pitting famous race horses against each other when they could not race each other will never answer the what ifs. That being said, I am a fan of Secretariat, not only because of his extraordinary and seemingly effortless speed, but also because of his physical beauty, intelligence, and kind temperament. Other TC winners were not described as possessing the combined traits I mentioned. The fact that Secretariat's heart was a lot bigger than the other thoroughbreds and was in perfect condition when they put them down (too early, in my opinion) may point to the reason why he was capable of overtaking other horses from the outside and even accelerated with great ease as he moved past them. I suspect that his lung capacity was also double those of the other horses given the breadth of his chest. He was a freak of nature and it was a pity that he did not race when he was a older and more experienced.
I live in Brazil, here, football is the main sport, but of everything I've seen about all three crowns that have existed until now, Secretariat is the biggest of them all !! I just think Secretariat was better. As far as the Bid goes, if you compare the times of Bid and Secretariat in the same races they both competed in (Laurel Futurity, Champagne, Derby, Preakness, Belmont, Marlboro Cup, Woodward/Jockey Club), Secretariat is better by some 50 lengths and that's including him running on two sloppy tracks. Swaps posted most of his ridiculous times out on the faster CA tracks as a 4 year old. We never got to see Secretariat run at 4, but I'm thinking it would have been absolutely insane stuff.
Both Citation and Secretariat had a kind, intelligent eye. Mark of a true champion. Poor Sham. Things would have been so different for him without Secretariat. He was forever an “also ran”.
An important fact that needs to be stated is that Citation not only won the triple crown in 1948 but he also ran a big stakes race, The Jersey Derby, the week before the Belmont Stakes and he won that race too. Some people complain that the 3 races of the Triple Crown take too much out of a horse in a short period of time but in fact Citation won 4 races in the same time span. Citation's record as a 3 year old is still unmatched.

Sorry to be late. You are correct when you say that Secretariat won the
Man O' War Stakes in 1973 and you are right when you say that it was on the grass. The Man O War was a "Weight For Age" race which is for 3 year olds and up. This race was always run in the early Fall usually September or October. They would never have run him against older horses while he was going for the Triple Crown. Between the Derby and the Belmont he only won one race and that was the Preakness.

The Man O War was run in October of 73. The Belmont was run in June. Big Red ran 3 races from Derby to Belmont. Citation won 4 races in the same time frame.
Richard, of corse, is correct. Cy's 3 year old year will never be match, as horses do not run 20 times in their at 3 year olds, or at any time. He won the Sysonby Mile against older horses, then 3 days later,won the Jockey Club Gold Cup, then run at 2 miles, and beat all the good stayers by a big margin.
Citation won by more average lengths (if you don't count the 31 length freak of a Belmont)

His record is a dirt record. Hawkster has the record for the 1.5 and he did it on turf, which is slower than dirt. Several horses have beaten Secretariat's time and have done it on slower tracks. It's not as impressive as you tell yourself it is.

The late, great horseman James E. "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, during an incredible career trained three Kentucky Derby winners, four Preakness Stakes winners, and six Belmont Stakes winners. Included were two American Triple Crown champions Gallant Fox in 1930 and his son Omaha in 1935. Fitzsimmons record total of thirteen classic wins stood for many years until it was finally broken by trainer D. Wayne Lukas in 2013. Fitzsimmons was once asked "what do you think about Citation"? To which Fitzsimmons responded, "Citation is without a doubt the best horse I ever saw, and I saw Man O'War."
Arcaro was the rider for Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat. I remember reading an article when Arcaro, in his twilight years before his death, said, Sec was the greatest horse he has ever seen. Same opinion shared by another great jockey, Laffit Pincay.

We don't really know for sure how fast Citation COULD go. His jockey never let him go all out. But if my personal opinion was correct, I would have to agree with you. Big Red was built to run just as Michael Phelps was built to swim. It was in their breeding and they both won the genetic lottery. I bet Secretariat could even beat the fictional Black Stallion of Walter Farley's, and The Black was the greatest horse in his fictional world. 😀

One of the great tragedies in horse racing was that Secretariat was not allowed to run as a four-year-old. Like Winn Elliott said, Secretariat looked like he was made in heaven. How can anyone suggest that Big Red is not the greatest horse of all time! He ran the last 1/4 mile in the Derby in 23 seconds, went from last to first before the announcer Chick Anderson knew what happen, and lets not forget the Belmont. We all look for that perfect race and horse and at the end of the Belmont we were able to see something that was supernatural called Secretariat.
Who would have won, an answer we can never get till we actually see them running together. That said, it can only happen in horse heaven.
What Sacreteriat accomplished over any horse is not only his running but his style and swagger. He just looked apart from any horse that I have seen on a race track, hell I've not even seen him in person. He was charismatic and his personality set him above anything when he was around. #Runbigred

You reading one of my comments does not give you a good perspective on what kind of knowledge I have about a particular topic. And considering my comment was based upon a factual statement, that gives you even less reason to attack me. It’s truthful that Secretatiat was 16 for 21 in his career. That’s a fact. With his one disqualification, which I accounted for in his win percentage, that’s 81%. Without it, it’s 76%. But I’ll do 81, since he won that race easily. 81% is solid, but it’s not perfect or near perfect. In school, that would be a B or B-. How the heck would you, a person who has never met me think you have a proper grasping of my knowledge about secretariat? It’s mind boggling how you could respond to my post in such a stupid way.
It is funny how we choose our heros. Citation lost 5 times in ,5 races to Noor. Noor also held the world record for the classic distance at 1:58 2/5ths. A full 5 lengths better than Secretariat as well. But somehow, nobody remembers the mighty Noor.. And Secretariat was relatively slow compared to several known Champions. Ie..Dr Fager, Swaps, Spectacular Bid to name a few. He also struggled when he left the restricted ranks, and ran in open company after the triple crown. Losing to the long forgotten Onion and Phone out. And was never tested with weight. Yet here we are. Movies, documentaries, accolades for Miles. No way in hell he beats a horse like Spectacular Bid...yet no movies about the '' greatest horse to ever look through a bridle.. it is fascinating...

No, back in those days they actually had true handicap racing, and if you were a jock showing off exactly how fast your horse was than you better stick to weight for age racing, as opposed to handicaps where they would pile the weight on. Arcaro was way too smart for that kind of nonsense. And Citation was such a great 3 year old that Jimmy Jones only ran him in weight for age races. But he broke down anyway, in his last race as a 3 yr old, after winning 27 of 29 starts in his first 2 years of racing.

I did some investigating into this episode, I found it curious that Turcotte looked almost as old as Arcaro. The episode aired in May 8th,1977. Ron Turcotte was born July 22, 1941, Eddie Arcaro was born February 19, 1916. At the time of the airing Ron was 36 years old and Eddie Arcaro was 61 years old so 25 years of difference between the two legends.
Apparently Arcaro looked good for his age and Turcotte not so much. Just figured that if I thought that, someone else may also find it useful and interesting.
Arcaro and, kelso together were almost unbeatable he won abut 98 pct of the races that he rode the great kelso. It was like someone said the greatest jockey of all times at the end of his carear riding the greatest racehorse of all-times at the start of his carear. Sad really. He understood kelso like no one did and, he had those strong hands to handle the great kelso who was so freakin strong for a horse that really looked like a freakin deer at 900 pounds and was still carrying at time 12 pct of his body weight! That was more than forego was 17.2 hands and, about 1,300 pouds! Kelso was something else. KELSOS' BIGGEST FAN.
Turcotte had a terrible accident and was in a wheelchair. That will age you.

Times mean the most in horse racing, but its hard to tell which horse is "the best" because you can never put the top five in a race together and see who has the most speed and the most spirit to continue. Times don't mean everything because there are horses like Seabiscuit who put on bursts of raw speed when an opponent challenges them after running full out for a mile already.M+6

Riva Ridge and Farma Way were faster at 1 3/16 miles, Spectacular Bid was faster at 1 1/4 miles, and Secretariat never ran 1 5/8 miles on dirt- Swaps did and set a legitimate record.
A lot of the claims about Secretariat are about races he never actually ran. The 2:24 flat, the 1:59 2/5 in the Derby, the disputed Preakness time, and the field he beat in the Marlboro in a then-world record time are very good accomplishments. But there's no reason people need to give him credit for things he didn't actually do.
At the time of the Belmont, Secretariat's time for 1 1/4 in the race would have been a new track record and his gallop out to 1 5/8 would have been a new track record. But because the race is 1 1/2, he was never credited for them.

Every loss he made as a three year old (the Wood, Whitney, and Woodward), he rebounded in the next race by winning those races in record time. The Kentucky Derby record still stands; the other two weren't broken for many, many years in the Marlboro Invitational (then-world record) and the Man O'War. No other horse could have done that.

Another point I would like to make that no one else has made is the fact that every time secretariat lost a race he would go out the very next race and break the track record. It takes a special kind of horse to do that.
With today's technology, Secretariat would undoubtedly have higher speeds on the Ketuncky, Preakennes and Belmont lanes, with higher records on the three lanes, as technology would show that it would be possible for the super horse to run much more if they wanted to.
I've seen other great Horses Frankel in England comes to mind first,, I've seen Dr Fagor, Zenyatta, but non come close to Secretariat the 31 length 2:24 mile and half is impressive, but non more impressive like that burst of speed in the middle of the Preakness, any other horse did this, would have been toast, but he won and finished strong all the same, really a miracle horse, I think Dr Fagor ran a track record with 140lbs on his back that was also special,, but I cannot tell when we will ever see another racehorse like Secretariat.
Dr. Fager won the 1968 Vosburgh Handicap with 139 pounds in 1:20 1/5, which was a track record at the time at aqueduct and only 1/5 off the world record.

Love how Eddie gets in like 4 times near the end that he never let citation run because everyone even Eddie just thinks Ron LET SECRETARIAT RUN full out to break these triple crown records when the truth of it is that he was not!!!! He proved it in other races that his 1:59 2/5 could’ve easily been a 1:57 and his 1:53 could’ve easily been a 1:51 n change. The Preakness ears up never touched once in the race and the Belmont not even sweating!!! People even Eddie want to say he doesn’t know how fast citation could’ve gone well neither do we with secretariat because secretariat was never pushed in the triple crown races!!!! Secretart worshippers like SoHills cannot make their case without mentioning time. "Time only counts when you are in jail." Absolute time is worthless. It is relative time that counts. You have to be faster than any other h orse on the track, get your nose to the wire first. That is just win. Looked at that way, Citation was a much better horse than Secretariat.
Look at their records as 3 year olds. Secretariat ran 12 times and won 9. 75% Citation ran 20 times and won 19. 95% Cy had a walk over as no owner wanted to race against him, as it was winner take all. He ran against older horses 7 times and beat them every time. Even when he was injured in his last race, he won. No horse, before or after, has done this.
Yes, Secretariat was a Monster, as Sham found out and could not have beaten him in a 100 races. But Sec was beaten 3 times as a 3 year old. Twice by inferior horses. Prove Out was a fine horse and beat him fair and square at Belmont on a wet track at a mile and a half. If the track had been fast, like at Sec's Belmont, it would have tired his record. That's how good Prove Out was. He was also a 4 year old, and gave Sec a few pounds.
I don't know the weight of Cy's heard. Sec's 25 pound heart could be part of the reason he was a monster. Sham also had a 25 pound heart. It was his bad luck to run the same year as Secretariat. Forego would not reach maturity until 4, when he became one of the great horses.
Sham was retired after the Belmont. He had been hurt, and Turcotte knew it. So he went to the front and asked Sham to follow him. Sham tried, but had to drop back and finish last. Maybe Sham could not run a mile and a half, but that does not seem likely. This was 1973, not 2018.

The lungs have to be perfect as well to metabolize air the way Secretariat did! Also, Secretariat just loved to run! I believe that Sham was related to Secretariat. It is not just a large heart that makes a horse more durable. You have to have the right team! Ron Turcotte was the perfect jockey for Secretariat. Hand ridden all the way at the Belmont! Poor Sham was whipped so many times, I can't even bear to look! The 1973 Belmont took everything away from Sham! At the necropsy of Secretariat, the vet said that his heart weighed approximately 22 pounds. It was 22 pounds of perfect!

Before the Belmont, Turcotte could see that Sham was not himself. So he went to the front and Sham's jockey tried to stay with him, but couldn't. He fell back, finished last, and never raced again. He was hurt. If he had been okay, he would not have beat Secretariat, but Sec would not win by no 31 lengths. The rest of the horses were window dressing. The rest of the h orses finished in 2:29 or 2:30.
You can believe Sec was the greatest horse in the h istory of horse racing. I and nobody else is going to convince you that that is b.s. I'd love to see Sec race Sea Bird on a turf course in France. Nearco. Ribot. Spectacular Bid. Forego. Man o War. Citation. Kelso. Native Dancer. Little Northern Dancer. Count Fleet. Dr. Fager. Damascus. And scores of others.
Sham also had a heavy heart. Maybe Man o War had a heavy heart. We'll never know. Citation won 19 of 20 races as a 3 year old, 15 straight. Did he have a heavy heart? What was Sec's record at 3?
Nobody knows for sure who is the greatest of all time as well. Cases can be made fairly effectively for several horses including Secretariat. For all the horses you listed, there is little doubt in my mind that Secretariat could run with any of them, let alone defeat them at his best. Regarding the turf, Turcotte thought he was 10 to 15 lengths better than on dirt. OK, I'm not necessarily buying that, but considering his records on the dirt, I wouldn't bet against him on the turf against anyone. Forego?? After the Kentucky Derby, Sherrill Ward said that he never wanted to face Secretariat again. Other than Kelso's 2:23 4/5 on a HARD turf course at Laurel and 8 1/2 furlongs where Secretariat missed a track record by 1/5th in the slop, Secretariat's times at the same distances as Kelso are open lengths better, and that's with Kelso having multiple races at those distances. During his too brief career ending at 3, Secretariat defeated at least 12 horses who at one time or another tied or set stakes, track or world records. Think about that.
You say time is worthless?? These are races for god sakes - of course time means something. It doesn't mean everything, but it means something. Why the heck do people then pay so much attention to Beyer and Brisnet speed figures? I do get it that there are instances where certain champions were not ridden out in some of their wins which needs to be considered.
You argue about times, but overall records don't mean as much as you make them out to be. Citation's three year old season is remarkable, but who did he defeat? Armed was done by 1948, and Coaltown didn't develop into a true distance champion until his 4 year old season. I actually think that Citation's performances at 5 against Noor are more impressive than most of his three year old wins. Count Fleet? Blue Swords was a nice horse, and that's about it. What do you think Native Dancer's record would have been had he been born two years later and had to race against Swaps and Nashua? Look at the sport of boxing. Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali have eight losses between them, but they are generally ranked ahead of undefeated Rocky Marciano by most boxing historians.
Sorry Eddie, Secretariet broke the track record in all three Triple Crown races and it still holds today, 50 years later! Big Red was the greatest!
I've always thought the false premise argument to be the most embarrassing and foolhardy to those who use it. In essence, it's the withholding of facts that lead to a truth vs. citing information that leads to a false or distorted conclusion. For example, the comments referring to final times over 10 furlongs. Further, the criticism as to a single race of one horse, yet attempting to use that very same principle in support of another horse, again, indicates the prejudiced mindset of a fool. The truth is in placing as many facts as possible on the table. Ghostzapper ran in but 11 races over 3 seasons plus the one race at 5 YO. He was running allowance races deep into his 3 YO season, not running in a G-1 until late August of 2003. He ran in only 5 G-1 races his entire career. The 2004 BC was a great run, but as a mature 4 YO late in the season he carried only 126 pounds. Sec ran 1:59 and 2/5ths in the KD having never run 10 furlongs and at an age of 3 years, 5 weeks. Andrew Beyer rated the track a full second slower than Northern Dancer's. One analyst calculated, trigonometrically, that Sec lost a full 2 seconds due to track position. Chef-de-Race, whom I respect immensely, stated that Sec would have run the same time under 130 pounds. Sec ran the final half mile in an estimated 46 and 3/5ths while never shortening his stride and drawing away from Sham, who, by the way has run the 2nd fastest KD to date. Sec passed the 10 furlong pole in the Belmont, on cruise control, in 1:59 flat and pulling up in the MC hit the 10 furlong mark in 1:57 and 4/5ths. You see, narrative and falsities never add up. Withholding information, also, just doesn't add up. Makes for amusement, though.
What's interesting to me is that both Citation and Secretariat won with their heads up, like they were being held back by their jockeys. I understand the medical reasons for holding a horse back, but I can't help wondering what could they have done if they were allowed to run full out.
Seabiscuit was winning races at 7 years old. Secretariat could have won at 10 years old.
Only way we could ever know the greatest race horse is? No human intervention. Line em up, no Jockey And let em run. But that cant happen so? Gotta go by the times. And Big Red is the man.

And Secretariat actually was not pushed to the limit. He was not whipped and was just allowed to coast along. I wonder how he would have fared had they pushed him to the limit. His feat would have dropped many race horses to the ground, and fatally at that.

That was how it was for Secretariat, he was a Big Horse and he started out slow, but after he got going and built up his momentum, then the was flying along and you couldn't stop him.
