    How many bottles do you go through before the tank runs out?

    • @MindfulHome
      @MindfulHome  3 роки тому +16

      Hey Steven! It largely depends on how bubbly you like your water. The cylinder says it fills up to 60L and each containers fits 1L of water. We fill up around 60 of those bottles before we switch the tank. Hope that helps!

      Thanks!!! That's one of my doubts. BTW, if you can find Guaraná syrup over there it tastes great and is a natural stimulant (I think it's caffeine). It's made from the fruits of the Guaraná tree here in Brazil. There are diet versions that taste decently. The main competitor of Coca-Cola here is Guaraná Antarctica and not Pepsi. Guaraná Antarctica can be found in the US and I'm sure you can find it in Boston since once Richard Stallman (creator of the open source idea and the GNU project) complained during a lecture here that there was no Guaraná at the place while he could easily buy it in Boston. I live near the German bordershops, and they allways have a sale on 1/2 liters carbonated water with or without flavor. To make 60 liters of unflavored water with the sodastream will cost me 89,- Dkr. As of April 2022 here are my cost numbers:
    In short, the Soda stream units are a bit of con, but perhaps environmentally they are a good idea. Hear me out on this:
    Days since purchase : 310 days
    Water Produced: 105.2 litres
    Cylinders used: 5 (4 purchased)
    Some interesting Statistics
    Avg litres water produced per cylinder= 21 litres water/ cylinder (not even close to what they state)
    Average amount of CO2 put into a 1 Litre Bottle: 5.0 gm
    Average amount of CO2 used per 1 litre bottle of water: 15.2 gm (so you're wasting 2/3'rds of the CO2 in a cylinder)
    Cost Analysis
    Initial cost of Unit:
    Basic Soda Stream unit + 1 extra CO2 cylinder, no extra water bottles: $176.26 Cdn, including tax.
    Since the cylinders are returnable (assuming you get rid of the soda stream unit at some point) for $16 each, one way to do the analysis is to consider the initial cost is $140.10 (cdn).
    Ongoing Costs:
    I've bought 4 refill cylinders ($20 plus tax Cdn) to make 105.2 water produced. This cost $90.35 Cdn, or $1.07 / litre of carbonated water
    I pay for municipal water and filters for my frig (where the bottles are filled from), cost: $2.34 Cdn
    Total cost is: $140.10 + 90.35 + 2.34 = $232.80
    Cost per 105.2 litres = $2.21 $/litre
    Additional litres of carbonated water cost me: $1.10 /litre (that's CO2, municipal water, and water filters).
    For comparison, Perrier water can be bought on sale sometimes in 1 litre bottles for $1.15 per litre, but right now it is $2.38 $/litre (cdn), President's Choice sparkling water is $1.30 to $1.20 / litre (Cdn), no tax. I'm told sometimes it's $0.99/litre
    The savings, assuming noname carbonated water is $1.30 - $1.074 = $0.23 per litre. Therefore the Soda stream unit will need to have processed about 320 litres to break even. This may take me about 1000 days, or just under 3 years, which is likely when I'll be needing a new unit. Thus, you don't save money.
    A couple of takeaways:
    * You don't save money. Actually if you can buy bottled water for less than $1.10 Cdn/liter, you're spending more money.
    * You do save putting empty plastic bottles into your recycling.
    * If you're doing special trips to the grocery store to buy carbonated water, maybe you save some gasoline.
    * If the Soda stream unit was more efficient in the use of the CO2 (it wastes 2/3'rds of the CO2 ) it might be significant to the cost analysis.

    I just bought one and found there were NO instructions with it. Thank you for explaining it all in your short and clear video. It is really disgusting that manufacturers of everything, including the Apple products which cost a fortune but don't have the courtesy to their customers to enclose a slip of paper telling you how to use it. No problem if you have been using one for years, but for the first time user simple instructions surely would not add more than a few cents.

    After pouring a portion of the water into your glass (after carbonating of course) and then screw the cap on to save the rest until later does it lose it's fizz is the cap and bottle air tight not to lose the fizz after it sits for a while. That is my problem with buying ie. Geyser Sparkling water that after it is opened and then put the cap back on it is not air tight and it goes flat very quickly. I am trying to kick the diet Pepsi and want to use this to help me do that. I know I will love it. Can someone answer my question please and thanks, excellent tutorial. R

    • @MindfulHome
      @MindfulHome  3 роки тому

      Hi Rae! I definitely get what you are saying. It’s a little tricky to answer that question because we drink so much sparkling water that we usually finish the whole bottle within a day and it’s perfectly bubbly. It does a great job at keeping the co2 in the bottle when you first close it after using the machine. However, on the occasional times that we’ve tried a water the next day, you do loose a little bit of the sharp bubbles but not a lot. The great thing is that you can just pop it back into the machine and add a little more if you want. Hope that helps!

      Hi Lisa! Yes, I totally forgot to add that to the video - sorry about that! How many bottles will one cylinder make?

    • @MindfulHome
      @MindfulHome  3 роки тому +6

      Hi Alecia! Short answer is A LOT. It definitely largely depends on how bubbly you like your water, though. They recommend doing 3 to 5 pumps and we usually go for 4. The cylinder says it fills up to 60L and the containers fits 1L of water (almost 3 cans worth) so you’ll get around 165 cans worth per cylinder if it helps you look at it that way. We were very pleased to find that our first cylinder lasted so long. Hope that helps!

      Make mead? Or Cycser. Buy a glass bottle of apple cider, buy some yeast and party balloons. Mix the yeast with some warm cider in a cup(not hot just warm) mix and let sit for 30 mins. Add the yeast to the bottle put the lid on and shake a bit. Take the lid off and put on the balloon poke 3-5 holes with a needle. Let sit in a room temperature 65-85 degree area, out of direct sunlight, for 2+ weeks. Place in fridge with cap on to stop yeast from growing more. Enjoy. I make like 10-20 gallons of mead a year it's really easy and you can do things like make it root beer flavor or add mulled wine spices for a Christmas beer.
