My favorite version of Cinderella is the Native American telling were the “prince” is invisible and will only reveal himself to his chosen bride. The stepsisters are publicly shamed for their vain natures and Cinderella, with her kindness, compassion, and honesty, marries the prince. I love this version so much!!
That reminds me of the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche (not sure if I spelled her name right) with the invisible prince, or sould I say god, and all that.
There's this one story called Vasilisa the beautiful that is a variation of the Frog Pricess Russian fairytale from the lilac/violet fairytale book. The common things that happen are the father growing old so he made his three sons find wives by having them shot arrows at random (letting fate decide) locations, the two oldest are pair up with a noble daughter and merchant as the youngest brother's wife is a frog, the wives have to pass trials to gain the father's (or mother's) approval, the frog used her 'magic' or wit to pass every test, when she shows her beauty human form the prince (or order by father) burns the frog skin behide his wife's back (another version the jealous wives burn the frog skin), wife leaves after that and prince goes out on a journey to find her with the help of witches or animals after he shows kindness, and there's a third party antagonist whom turn the princess into a frog or threated her family and she have to wear a frog disguise for a few years.
Yes, it's actually called The Frog Princess (Tsarevna). The man who cursed her was her father who could not bear the fact that his daughter was wiser than him so he turned her into a frog. Her father was Koschei the Deathless. In this version, Baba Yaga helps the protagonist Prince Ivan (or Tsarevich Ivan) to defeat Koschei by telling him the secret of his immortality. (A needle inside and egg, egg inside a duck, duck inside a rabbit, rabbit inside a chest, chest on a tree). Thanks to the animals he spared on his way (Bear, Bird, Rabbit and Fish) he breaks the needle and kills Koschei, freeing Vasilisa. There is a short 1977 Russian cartoon that perfectly depicts the story. Great music and beautiful graphics.
@@pecahalloween I saw the cartoon. It was good. Still would have love to see the Prince get scolded for taking something that isn't his. That was my favorite part in the original.
I don’t know if you’ve read it, but Christina Henry has written a book about Hook’s Origin. It is called Lost Boy and it really does feel like part of the actual Peter Pan tale. Consider giving it a read as it is really a great book.
The witch: “why are you HERE? “ The girl: “for fire for my house.” The which: “and why should I help YOU? “ The girl: “because I asked.” The witch: “oh okay, I’ll help.”
Here's another Slavic version (from Serbia): Cinderella, whose name is Mara, accidentely drops her spinning wheel in a endless pit, regardless of the words of the old man who told her that whoever drops their spinning wheel in the pit, their mother will turn into a cow. And so, Mara's mother turned into a cow. Mara's father remarried and brought a woman with a daughter of her own. The stepmother abused Mara and renamed her Cinderella, for she was always covered in cinders and ashes. Anytime she would be given a task, her mother (now a cow) would help. Example: Cinderella would be forced to spin wool into yarn, but with no spinning wheel, so the cow would chew on the wool, and yarn would come out of the cow's ear, which Cinderella would later roll in a ball of yarn. After some time, Stepsister found out about this and told her mother, the stepmother ordered the father to kill the cow and Cinderella to cook her. Cinderella did it, but before the cow was killed, the cow told her not to eat her meat, but to collect her bones and bury. Should she ever find herself in any trouble, she should go to her grave. Then the story goes almost like in the Grimm's version: The festival (due to Orthodox church in Serbia I suppose the festival was changed into Church service). Anytime Cinderella wanted to meet the Emperor's son, she would go to her mother's grave, find a chest with a dress and slippers in it. After the third time, the emperor's son spreads pitch and Cinderella gets stuck and loses one of her slippers. The young man sets to find her, and of course, the Stepmother hides Cinderella, however, under the trough (an ancient bath tub). The stepsister tries the slipper on and fails, the emperor's son is ready to leave, when a rooster jumps out and yells that his bride is under the trough. The stepmother curses the rooster, but the prince lifts the trough and finds Cinderella. She tries on the slipper and it fits. Cinderella marries the prince and they lived happily ever after.
We have a very similar story here in Lithuania. The girl is named Marytė, her mother dies when she is young (in some versions her spirit becomes a cow or a bird) and her father remarries an evil woman with three evil daughters. The first daughter has one eye, the second two and the third three. Her father dies while hunting (in some versions) and the woman, who hated Marytė wants to kill her. She makes her spin wool into thread(?) but doesn't give a spinning wheel. Marytė goes to her cow friend and cries. The cow eats the wool and it becomes thread. She brings the thread to her stepmother. The woman is furious and send the first daughter with Marytė. They sit together and Marytė combs the first daughter's hair and sings a lullaby until she closes her eye. Then Marytė does the same thing with the cow and brings thread home. The next day stepmother sends her second daughter, Marytė does the same thing and the manages to make the daughter close both of her eyes. The cow eats the wool and makes thread. The third day she sends her daughter with three eyes. Marytė combs her hair but forgets to close her third eye, so the daughter tells her mother how Marytė spins wool. This is where it gets kinda wishy woshy because there are a lot of versions, but this is the one I know. The stepmother furious commands to kill the cow but the girl saves it and hides it (in some versions the cow dies). Stepmother digs a hole underneath the door and fiils it with hot ashes so Marytė would fall in and die when she tries to go inside. The woman bakes a pie and calls the girl home, but her dog friend warns her of the trap. So Marytė doesn't go. Step mother kills the dog and calls the girl again, then a cat warns Marytė, stepmother kills the cat and calls again, Marytė (being stupid) comes and fall into the hole with hot ashes and burns. Stepmother takes the ashes and pours them out behind the gate. The cow finds the ashes and licks them so Marytė is reincarnated as a duck. (in some versions she just becomes a duck) and flies through the forest until she finds a guy/ her brother / her father (many different versions) and tells what happened. He travel back home and there are different versions here: 1) stepmother wanting to greet him steps into her own trap and burns. He takes her ashes and scatters them in the fields 2) He shoves her into a barrel and ties it to the horse, which runs around until her bones are scattered in the fields 3) He covers the side of the horse with pitch and stook her hand to it. The horse run until her bones were scattered in the fields. In some versions Marytė stayed as a duck in some she turned back to a human
My favorite version of the Cinderella tale is the Vietnamese one that I grew up with. Tam (the Cinderella) actually got killed by her step-mother and step-sister several times before being reborn as a non-human thing after worth, and still managed to get her husband (yes, they already married by this point) to fell in love with her. After being killed for the fourth, fifth(?) time, she got tired of her family's shit and downright murdered them. She tricked the step-sister into being boiled alive, then pickled her corpse and sent it back to her step-mother who then cannibalized her own daughter without knowing it, only be told by a raven after worth and died because of shock. The fact that so many families tried so much to hide this version of the original tale from their children but fail because the ministry of education put it into the official literature curriculum made this even better.
In Indonesia, we have a similar tale called “Bawang Putih and Bawang Merah” which roughly translates to White Onion (garlic) and Red Onion. Similar to Cinderella, White Onion is the younger sister (or step sister, depending on who you ask) of Red Onion. Red Onion and their mother treat White Onion terribly and like a servant, only letting her season her rice with salt. One day whilst washing their laundry she accidentally loses the clothes downstream. Furious, the evil stepmom tells her to fetch for it, in which she complies. At the end of the river bank, White Onion meets a kind old lady who offers to give her laundry back if White Onion were to complete several tasks given by her. Once completed, she rewards White Onion with a choice of two pumpkins-one is plump and large, whilst the other petite. Out of modesty, White Onion picks the small one. When she carves it open, she is pleasantly surprised by the gold hidden inside it! Red Onion and the evil stepmom got jealous and wanted in on the action, and purposely loose their laundry downstream. Again, they meet and complete the tasks from the old lady and are given the choice of two pumpkins. They choose the plump and large one. Depending on who you ask, once they carve it open either snakes jump out or bugs crawl out and eat them alive. They die either way and White Onion gets the last laugh. I loved hearing my grandma tell this tale to me!
In Germany therse a fairytale cald Mother Hulda/ Frau Holle (in german) from the brothers Grimm Once there was a Widow who had two daugherts one was pretty and hard working the other ugly and lazy. The Widow loves the ugly one is her real daughter the pretty one is the stepdaughter. She has to be the maid like Cinderella. She has to spin all the flax by the well. Ones she spins so much that her Fingers bleed and the spool gets coverd in blood. She wanted to wash it but it fell in the well. She tells her stepmom what happend but she isnt happy about it and says:,, If you dropped it get it out! " She has no other way but jumping in the well. She lands on a beautyfull meadow and walks along a path where theres a oven which she has to get the bread out. She did and came to an Apple Tree which she had to Shake. She comes to a house where a old Lady lifes with large teeth. The old woman says:,, Dont be afraid. I wont harm you. If you help me with the housework you will get what you deserve. If you shake my pillows every day and when the feathers fly it will snow on the Earth. Im Mother Hulda." The girl loses fear and helps her and in the Winter the snow fell plenty. She gets home sick and Mother Hulda lets her go. They walked to a gate and the girl should stand under the gate. As she does a shower of gold fells on her and stucks to her. :,, This is the reward for your work." said Mother Hulda. The girl sudenly is home where the rooster said that the golden mistress has returned. The stepmom and daughter wanted to know where the gold came from and the gold girl told them all. The stepmom said to the ugly one that she should go too mother Hulda. She jumps into the well comes to the oven which she dosent help. The Apple Tree isnt lucky because the lazy girl wont help the ripe Apples. She dosent work well and gets instead of gold an other reward under the gate. An huge pot of Pitch was poured over her and Mother Hulda said:,, This is the reward for your lazyness!" Pitch Girl comes home And the rooster said that the pitchy misstres has returned. The Pitch didnt get of her until she died. The end. I see some similar parts from this story and this story
my favorite version, book-wise, is Ye Xian aka Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story From China. In that story, there was no tree, no fairy godmother, and no baba yaga but a magical golden fish that makes her clothes and shoes for a festival in her village. In the end, she marries the emperor and her step-mother and half-sister were trapped in their cave after a cave in and, depending on which edition, were never seen again or became the goddesses of generosity.
I also remember this version!!! I l read this one right after I found the Native American version of Cinderella. I think it was called the Rough Face Girl.
I once read a version of this that was a little different. After getting home with the glowing skull, vasilesa is just beaten by her step family. Baba Yaga, who followed her home because her heart was moved by vasilesa and had grown fond of her sees this and turns the step siblings into pigs. The skull then chases the step family away into a pig farm where they are soon eaten. Vasilesa is then taken in by Baba Yaga as an Apprentice. There are tons of different versions of this story, I know there's even one that includes a magic goose somewhere along the way.
This is now my favorate Cinderella version story and there's no sad or tragic ends in this version but more happy and more badass than anything that I have seen.
@@abitfrank Also I absolutely love your channel, your voice is so soothing it's a real pleasure to listen to it, and your drawings make the videos really fun to watch💖
I love tales of Baba Yaga! She's somewhat neutral, which is a bit of a different concept to those listening to Western Tales. The only other tale I've heard if is the one with the Gate a cat and a dog, some oil a mirror and a comb. In that one she's a bit more of a villain, but people still come to her seeking help. Keep up the channel!
This isn't a Cinderella type story, but the story of a rewarded diligent girl and a punished lazy girl. I really like the Grimm version, "Mrs Holle", because there the rewarding spirit is connected to prechristian traditions from my region. But my cousins, whom I always tell tales, really love the Italian version, "the Mammon Cat", where the spirit is a Catking demon.
This reminds me of a Greek legend about the wife of Cupid, long story short she one of the most beautiful women in all the land, so much so that Aphrodite (the goddess of love) want to have her murdered, so she sends her son, Cupid to kill( maybe something else, this is from memory) her, but he falls in love and asks the god of the Western wind to swipe her away from her jealous stepsisters and stepmother( sound familiar?) and they fall in love because Cupid admires how humble she is for a princess, but under one condition, she can never look at him( something about looking at the face of love) but, her jealous stepsisters convince her to look at her husband( they magically got married in the secluded castle) and she does, Cupid dumps her off somewhere, exposed to Aphrodite and alone. She wanders miles before stumbling along One of Artemis’s dirty worshiping places( cant remember what its called, too lazy) and cleans it, then Athenas, they both promise to help her later and someone the girl is okay with this. The whole time she wants to get godly attention so she can apologize to Cupid for breaking his only rule, so she decides screw it, and calls on Aphrodite to kill her, turns out Cupid is ill with heartache. But, being lazy I guess, she gives her two impossible challenges, involving separating two microscopic items, the girl only completed them because Zeus, convinced by Athena and Artemis to help her, he turned into a colony of ants. Then Aphrodite told her to go to the underworld, to get a perfume from Persphone, Hades wife. She went, aided by Cupid, still deathly ill. Presphone ( spelt wrong) helped her once she got to the underworld and explained everything in a mental breakdown, she gives her it, but to not spray it Similarities: Wicked stepsisters and stepmother Three trials that include separating lint and other small items Brave and beautiful main character Both viewed by an absolute nerd.
So normally I don’t post comments but I can’t remember this fairy tale for the life of me. I remember reading this one as a kid where there were two girls, one bratty and entitled and another kind and caring. One day kind girl goes to the beach and meets three mermaids. They have her comb their hair and pearls fall out. She is given the choice of many nice dresses and chooses the plainest one. The mermaids give her pearls and gold. As she leaves, she is given the choice of a stable or grand hall to exit. She chooses the stable and a brilliant gold star falls on her forehead. The bratty girl is outraged so she goes back to the beach where she complains about combing the mermaids’ hair and seaweed falls on her from the hair. She complains about the dresses and chooses the most extravagant one. As she leaves she walks through the grand hall of course and a donkeys tail get stuck to her forehead. If anyone knows this story please let me know, I read it all the time when I was little and want to relive it. Thanks
To me, Vasalisa seemed like a mix of Cinderealla, Hansel and Gretle and Rumplestiltskin. I definitely loved it though and I can't wait for the next video.
In my school (4th grade I believe), we did several units on retellings of some fairy tales from around the world; Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, and of course Cinderella. Cinderella was my favorite unit for the fact that there were just a TON of stories. List are my four favorite: "The Rough-Faced Girl" -a Native American Cinderella story. "The Irish Cinderlad"- A male Cinderella story. "Domitila"-A traditional Mexican Cinderella tale. "Smoky Moutain Rose"- And Appalachian Cinderella tale. (this was the newest one out at the time and that should say something lol)
My favorite version would have to be *The Story of Tam and Cam*. It continues on even after the Cinderella character marries the prince and trust me when I say things get really intense.
here are some different versions of the Cinderella's tale , Cinderella: The Graphic Novel ,The Glass Voice, Cinderella Stories Around the World: 4 Beloved Tales,What's That Sound, Cinderella?: The FairyTale Physics of Sound and Yeh-Shen
If I can theorise as analytically as you do in these videos in my GCSE’s I shall pass with flying colours! I’m a new addition to the channel but I am very happy this channel popped up into my recommendations! In shorter words thank you for being you!
It was my first time hearing about Vasilisa and I have one thing to say. That was beautiful! I've really enjoyed Cinderella but never dived into other versions of it except for the Brothers Grimm (love it cuz of the darkness of it). And let me tell you, that your channel is also really amazing! I can actually enjoy literature, be it in the form of children movies or stories, and discover more about it from different versions or cultures. The darkness of everything is quite interesting and a personal favorite of mine. :)
I somehow just realised that this was published a day after my birthday - last day of school before lockdown here in England and when all my friends had retreated into self-isolation, so I was alone. Belated thanks for the late birthday present, abitfrank! I just wished I had watched this sooner (I LOVE this tale - I myself am a bookworm and I might try to get my hands on a copy of this story...)
I freaking love your videos!! You are so funny and creative and I'm happy I discovered your channel! Thank you for covering these stories that don't get a lot of recognition
Ahh~ I'm so excited for this video! I grew up being told stories about Baba Yaga as a kid and it's wonderful to hear different stories finally coming into widespread media!
I love this version tbh. Also, any mention of Baba Yaga haha. The Persians have a version of Cinderella where when the girl marries the prince, the step sisters got so jealous THEY EXPLODED.
Here in Czechia, we have a story called Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella. It's similar to the Grim version a little because the father also asks his daughters what do they want him to bring them from his trip and Cinderella asks for something that hits his hat. He brings back a hazelnut twig with three hazelnuts on it. Also, in this tale, Cinderella's father knows of the abuse but the stepmother is so terrifying and cruel he is afraid to stand up to her. There are also birds helping Cinderella with her impossible tasks. However, she is never explicitly prohibited from going to the ball. The stepmother just gives her an impossible task and tells her she can go to the ball once she's done. The birds then tell Cinderella to open one of the hazelnuts and she gets a beautiful silver dress out of it. She goes to the ball while the birds take care of the task. There is no time limit but she knows she has to be home before her stepmother and stepsisters get home otherwise they would get furious. The same thing repeats the very next night with the second ball, except the dress from the second hazelnut is gold. The prince already doesn't want to risk losing her again so the stairs are covered in glue and Cinderella loses a shoe. There is some cutting off as well, a lot of Czech fairy tales are heavily inspired by the Grimm versions. In the end, the prince finds Cinderella and the gold slipper fits her perfectly. She opens the third hazelnut to find a beautiful wedding dress and a royal wedding takes place. There is also a movie version where the first dress is replaced by a hunter attire and Cinderella meets her prince in the forest on a hunt after she shoots a pheasant he was meaning to hunt with her arrow. The prince thinks her a boy despite her voice somehow? And he also recognizes her later on at the ball. Oh, right, and in the movie she has a talking horse instead of birds helping her and she doesn't really get any impossible tasks to fulfill. She gets locked up in an old wooden shack at the end of the movie so she couldn't meet the prince but her horse guides the prince to her and the two are reunited.
I once read in Jacob's English Folktales tells of a girl who's name is revealed to be "Mossycoat". The story starts with her living with her magical mom and being courted by a talented Tailor. Her mom convinces Mossy to charm the Tailor into making her two fine dresses and a pair of satin slippers (which the story remarks that she had the tiniest feet ever). Her mom sends her off to her destiny because she foresees her future elsewhere and sends the daughter with the tailored gifts and a coat made of moss which can teleport her where ever she wishes. Mossy goes to work for a nobleman in the kitchen where the three cooks were so jealous of Mossy's beauty that they made her do all the dirty work and beat her on the head with a spoon. Eventually, the Nobleman has a ball for his son and mossycoat attends it by using her magic to put the cooks to sleep before dressing up with the coat under her dress. On the second night, she loses the slipper, was able to try it on (because tiny feet) and even change into each of her pretty dresses to prove who she is. The cooks got their punishment because she told them at the ball that she came from a place where they beat her with a spoon. (this same book also have a weird Ash child story like cinderella but i like mossycoat better)
oh my god imagine being Vasalisa's dad. you come back from a long business trip only to find that: your second wife and step children are dead, your house has been sold, and your daughter has married the King
Sorry, I don't know much English. This is a Russian folk tale. Almost every little child in Russia knows this fairy tale. And I'm proud of it. There are a few interesting things I would like to say about the video. 1) the fairy tale is called not just "Vasilisa", but "Vasilisa the Beautiful". 2) my hearing was a little disturbed by the way you pronounce the name of the witch from the forest. The Russian accent in her name is placed on the last syllable: bAba yagA. 3)I really like your videos, and although I was late with my comment, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do
Back when I was about 7 my school librarian read to us a multitude of different versions of Cinderella. There was the Disney version, a child friend Grimms tale, one where Cinderella was a male, and even one where instead of tiny feet, Cinderella had huge feet. Also, though I have yet to read it, I hear Ella Enchanted is a good book that takes the story of Cinderella and expands on it. I still think Mulan is still my favourite Disney princess but I cannot lie about how interested I am in these versions of Cinderella, and might even give them a read myself. 😁💚
This reminds me of the tale "Manndattera og kjerringdattera" (Norwegian version, but definitely appear in other countries as well). In this tale a man and a woman who each have a child from before marries. The man's daughter is hard working and beautiful, while her stepmother and -sister are lazy. They are jealous of her beauty, so they do the obvious thing: force her to jump into the well. Naturally the well leads to a... meadow. There the girl takes up hire with an evil witch. The nature and animals around her helps her solve "impossible" tasks, like filling up the water barrel using a sieve. In the end, she is granted a chest of gold and silver to take home. Her stepmom and -sister are jealous, and so the stepsister goes down the well as well. She fails to listen to nature, and leaves with a chest she takes home to her mom. However, when they open the chest, what comes out is worms and toad! And when the stepsister opens her mouth to scream worms and toads come out of her too!
There is actually another version of the Cinderella story but it's actually a Chinese version. The main character who plays the role of Cinderella is named Yeh Shen. The story has a similar concept to the original except the magical creature in the story is a fish instead of mice or a living doll. I remember reading this story back in probably elementary school, I can't remember, but I do remember reading about it. It's a really interesting story to read~!!
My favorite version takes place in ancient China. Involving a magic tree, talking fish bones (from a fish the stepmother killed because she was mad that the protagonist made friends with it) very very tiny slippers. And a king who she never met but is shown the slipper but a traveling showman and decides he wants to marry whoever has these very tiny feet.
Here in Germany, we tell the story a little different (polish origins). It’s basically THE Christmas tale that’s shown every December 24/7 on television. It includes a hazel twig with three nuts (comparable to the magic tree). Cinderella (unfortunately I don’t know how to translate the name) sees the prince and his people regularly hunting in the woods and confronts him once - but he dismisses her as a bratty tomboy child (she’s underage, dirty from working and very upfront, what the prince is not accustomed to) another time, she wants to join the hunt (being good with a crossbow herself) but knows they won’t accept her (being a girl and all) until she accidentally breaks one of the hazelnuts and a hunter‘s gown appears on the ground instead of the nut. She owns the competition, but leaves before she gets discovered. Then, there’s a ball (bc duh) and she wants to join, but her evil stepfamily dismisses her, saying she doesn’t have a dress. Cinderella consoles herself, breaking the second nut in the process and a gorgeous dress appears. She meets the prince at the ball, he is mesmerised with her and she gives him a riddle about who she is (indirectly claiming they have met before). She flees from the ball, prince follows, she breaks the third and last nut and discovers a silver wedding gown. Prince and Cinderella meet up at her house, prince solves her riddle and they ride (they have horses) together in the sunset.
If you like Cinderella esq stories Mufaro’s beautiful daughters is an extremely good story you will probably like. It’s about two sister Nyasha and Manyara who hear that the king has called all the eligible women of his kingdom to present themselves so he may choose one of them to be his wife. Their father Mufaro urges the girls to go. They agree to both go at the same time as all the other girls of the village do. Manyara breaks her word and leaves early to give herself an advantage. Nyasha keeps her word and is given supplies by her father when her sister had received none. They both come across a child asking for food, an old woman who needs help crossing a river, and a snake who asks to be brought with them to the palace to see the king. Manyara refuses the child her food, scolds the old woman for having the audacity to ask her future queen for help, and tries to stomp the snake. When she arrives at the palace she sees a great beast in front of the throne and is frightened away. Nyasha on the other hand gives the child her food, helps the old woman and lovingly carries the snake to the palace. When she gets to the palace the snake turns into the handsome young king and he is so moved by her kindness he marries her right away. (He was each of the travelers the sisters met along the way and intentionally scared Manyara away for her cruelty.)
Never thought that our fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful" is kinda Cinderella's origin. And I really love your pronunciation of names. Oh, also here is the emphasis on the second "a" at Yaga
Your voice is very fit for the theme of the video! It's sinister, yet a little bit evily calm, but no too calm that it frightens you, but calm enough to have you on edge. I really like that! And your drawings fit the theme too! I am a big fan!
I love this! My personal favorite Russian variation of a fairy tale is "The Dead Princess and the Seven Knights," the Russian Snow White. It's super fun and the prince isn't a total creep!
in the vietnamese version of cinderella there's only one sister and the father dies shortly after he remarries. one day the stepmother told cinderella and her stepsister to go fishing and whoever catches the most fish gets to go to the ball. cinderella ofc, caught the most fish and then went to take a bath in the river. the stepsister on the other hand was just playing the whole time and then steals all of cinderella's fish and goes home to her mother. when cinderella finishes bathing she comes back and finds that her fish are gone, and starts sobbing. the vietnamese kitchen god (hes like the fairy godmother)appears in front of her and says that there's still a fish left and she should bring it home and keep it as a pet in the well, and sing to it everytime she wants to feed it. one day when cinderella is feeding the fish, the sister finds out and sings the song to the fish and eats the fish. cinderella comes home after her chores and finds her fish is eaten and starts sobbing. the kitchen god appears to her again and tells her to divide the bones into 3 parts and put them in 3 pots under her bed, and she does as he says. and then the day of the ball comes, she is not permitted to go because she doesnt have a dress. and she starts sobbing again. the kicthen god appears to her again and tells her put the bones outside on the ground. then the bones become a gown, a carriage, and horses. she then goes to the ball, the prince falls in love with her, they get married immediately. the stepmother kills cinderella. she then reincarnates as an tree and becomes the prince's fav tree. then the sister marries the prince and chops down the tree. then cinderella becomes a bird that can turn into a human and lives with a old lady. the prince then walks visits the village that cinderella now lives in and married her again. cinderella then trapped her sister in a hole and then killed her by pouring boiling water on her head and burying her alive
OMG i watched this vid just in time because i just learned about vasilisa and even wrote a peace of writing about it at school so the story is stuck in my head so i was super excited to listen to someone read it out because i really like this story
I remember there was a version where there was a 3rd stepsister who was actually kind, and had given her the name "Cinderella" as a nickname bc she always had to clean out the fireplace
The most sraightforward Russian Cinderella-type story is, I think, Little Khavroshka. She has even three cruel sisters to watch over her, all with varying numbers of eyes, a magic helping cow (which might be her mother's reincarnation), and an evil woman who tries to wear her to death with work, kills and eats her magic cow and in some versions that don't stop with marriage turns Khavroshka into a wild goose and substitutes her with her daughter. Funny how all these substitutes can't be found out immediately even if the rightful wife has already born a child to her husband, so it's not like he's seen her just once.
Just wanted to say how amazing your video's are! The stories are super interesting and I really like how you tell them! Your art is amazing as well and fits really well with everything :) Keep up the good work!
My favourite version is Rushencoatie where instead of a fairy godmother Rushencoatie (her name instead of cinderella) had a magical red calf that made sure she always had enough food to live and instead of a prince the love interest was a local lord
It's like a mix of Hansel & Grettel, Coraline, and Sleeping Beauty...sort of...talk about a gruesome ending for her step-mom and sisters though lol. This is the first version I've seen where her dad didn't die.
Great re-telling! I remember this story from my childhood. What happens when parents drop you off at the library during the summer instead of getting a sitter ? You end up reading things.
Video: The doll will come alive when fed and looks just like her owner
Me: Coraline? Is that you?
The Beldam was at work even back then haha!
abitfrank I also just realized that at 0:15 you can see the button key from Coraline. Very sneaky 😂
I thought the same lol.
Yo samee
And some disembodied hands
My favorite version of Cinderella is the Native American telling were the “prince” is invisible and will only reveal himself to his chosen bride. The stepsisters are publicly shamed for their vain natures and Cinderella, with her kindness, compassion, and honesty, marries the prince. I love this version so much!!
Ohhh that sounds like a great one!
Isn't he a snake in that one?
That's a good one! The Rough Face Girl
I’ve read that one before, we had a Native American day and people with those origins told us that story. It was good
That reminds me of the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche (not sure if I spelled her name right) with the invisible prince, or sould I say god, and all that.
Take a moment to appreciate someone has the best narrating voice
(I never knew this had so many likes-)
Severiano Jasso hahah she does!

I was waiting for the doll turn on her, like she takes the doll for granted and this angers the doll

Or I was waiting for them to find out about the doll and take it away from her!

Oh wow that sounds really interesting!!!

That's long
@Elalae La well the story was collected by Vuk Karadzic, he collected Serbian folk tales. The kids read it in 4th grade.
That's like the most full account of all the Cinderellas and Little Khavroshechkas.
He travel back home and there are different versions here:
1) stepmother wanting to greet him steps into her own trap and burns. He takes her ashes and scatters them in the fields
2) He shoves her into a barrel and ties it to the horse, which runs around until her bones are scattered in the fields
3) He covers the side of the horse with pitch and stook her hand to it. The horse run until her bones were scattered in the fields.
In some versions Marytė stayed as a duck in some she turned back to a human
Hvala brate

In Germany therse a fairytale cald Mother Hulda/ Frau Holle (in german) from the brothers Grimm
Once there was a Widow who had two daugherts one was pretty and hard working the other ugly and lazy. The end.

my favorite version, book-wise, is Ye Xian aka Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story From China.

Presphone ( spelt wrong) helped her once she got to the underworld and explained everything in a mental breakdown, she gives her it, but to not spray it
Similarities: Wicked stepsisters and stepmother
Three trials that include separating lint and other small items
Brave and beautiful main character
Both viewed by an absolute nerd.

List are my four favorite:
"The Rough-Faced Girl" -a Native American Cinderella story.
"The Irish Cinderlad"- A male Cinderella story.
"Domitila"-A traditional Mexican Cinderella tale.
"Smoky Moutain Rose"- And Appalachian Cinderella tale. (this was the newest one out at the time and that should say something lol)
Her voice is so comforting, I feel like it makes the story so much better!
I remember a version that when Cinderella is married, they make either the stepmother or stepsisters dance in red iron shoes until they die
I feel like this should become a movie.. if only it were more well-known.
My favorite version would have to be *The Story of Tam and Cam*. It continues on even after the Cinderella character marries the prince and trust me when I say things get really intense.
It is a Vietnamese story and yes, the after prince part is very intense.
The one where the girl feeds her stepsister to her stepmother because if so that one is terrifying.

In Germany this movie is shown in Christmas time and Christmas and its very perfectly done.
@@jojo-es3ks It usually goes on around that time here too! It's a little old but I agree very nice.
The way you draw the doll is so adorable, I want one

Hi, I LOVE YOU! One of my fav yt channels. You do amazing work, girl!
Hello!
3)I really like your videos, and although I was late with my comment, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you do
I know I'm a child but....... I can't stop watching your videos!!!

Love when the notifications work. Glad to be here on time 💕
Here in Germany, we tell the story a little different (polish origins). It’s basically THE Christmas tale that’s shown every December 24/7 on television.
It includes a hazel twig with three nuts (comparable to the magic tree). Cinderella (unfortunately I don’t know how to translate the name) sees the prince and his people regularly hunting in the woods and confronts him once - but he dismisses her as a bratty tomboy child (she’s underage, dirty from working and very upfront, what the prince is not accustomed to)
another time, she wants to join the hunt (being good with a crossbow herself) but knows they won’t accept her (being a girl and all) until she accidentally breaks one of the hazelnuts and a hunter‘s gown appears on the ground instead of the nut.
Never
thought that our fairy tale "Vasilisa the Beautiful" is kinda Cinderella's origin. And I really love your pronunciation of names. Oh, also here is the emphasis on the second "a" at Yaga
I'm actually really happy you are getting sponsors. I found your channel because of Coraline and fell in love.
It’s nice to watch these videos. I like your voice. Even tho I already knew most of the origins, it’s nice to look back to my younger childhood days
The channel gives me LetMeExplain Studios Vibes, I love it, I think I'll subscribe!
"This tale is grim and gory."
Dat be da stuff I came here for. How dare you threaten me with a good time.
I loved this story so much better than the Disney rendition, thank you for sharing this story with us. (Love your style and content by the way) 🐢
I had no idea about the story of Vasalisa! I'm so loving this channel!
Ok but the way you drew Vasalisa she's so pretty 🥺
I love this version! I love how odd it is, yet so unique
I really appreciate how the step family got redesigned to keep the little figures distinct XD
My favourite version is Rushencoatie where instead of a fairy godmother Rushencoatie (her name instead of cinderella) had a magical red calf that made sure she always had enough food to live and instead of a prince the love interest was a local lord
You should DEFINITELY make a podcast i would for sure watch
It's like a mix of Hansel & Grettel, Coraline, and Sleeping Beauty...sort of...talk about a gruesome ending for her step-mom and sisters though lol. This is the first version I've seen where her dad didn't die.
abitfrank: Bad Ash
Me: Army of Darkness?! 😎
Great re-telling! I remember this story from my childhood. What happens when parents drop you off at the library during the summer instead of getting a sitter ? You end up reading things.

Me: INTO THE THICK OF IT-
This channel is the only reason I read Coraline and I don't regret it
Yes I love watching your dark and spoopy videos
Note that Vasilisa in Greek means Queen 😍
I really like this version of the story! Thanks for sharing it with us :D
