Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

I love how Jimmy continues the trend of characters who yearn for Mike's validation lol
He needs more stickers for validation.
And it’s funny that it’s Jesse of all people who earned it

Maybe because it never happened in Breaking Bad
Probably because it feels like they shouldve met and have a scene together considering how connected they are through mike, but they never had any interaction or really see each other until this bca scene.
Bet it felt even more weird to see Lalo and Howard right next to each other.
Pretty lame how this is the only scene with them together.
Gus Fring really does seem like such a pleasant, considerate and polite gentleman. If I didn't know that he'd slit a man's throat with a box-cutter, I'd invite him over for dinner.

The small detail of Jimmy dumping the basket in with the trash, then Gus retrieving it. So many tiny details make this world feel more real.
I love the fact that Gus seems genuinely miffed about it as well. The whole Los Pollos Hermanos cover works because he really does care about it, even if it's only in a "If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing right" way.
BRAVO VINCE!
@@Geothesponge111 He offers to clean Jimmy's watch band, with alcohol wipes. Most professional thing possible and Jimmy just puts it back on and Gus looks ever so slightly disgusted. Because Jimmy doesn't mind being a greaseball but the way Gus conducts himself, everything has to be perfect. The facade has to be pretty, because something sinister is cooking underneath.
can´t stop wondering if that was scripted or Giancarlo in character just did it
Gus dumped a basket himself into the trash once.
2:55 The detail of Gus stepping outside to see the two guys at a vantage point
Good catch
Gus is always watching.
Dear Jesus that’s actually terrifying
Oh man you can definitely see him in his yellow dress shirt! I didn’t notice that and I’ve re watched BCS like 4 times now. Cannot wait for S6 it’s going to be so good
Wow, you are right. I didn't notice it when i was watching the episode.

The tiny little look of "dude, seriously?!" When he saw that someone threw the entire platic serving tray in the bin is wonderful.
It was Jimmy too lol
The thing I love about Gus is that he isn't afraid to get his hands dirty in both lines of work. We always see him wiping down tables and taking trash bags out to the dumpster and in his other line of work we see him kill people (box cutter, plastic bag and ziptie).
He’s a real leader for sure
Dr loomis where is Michael ?
This is exactly why people respect everything he does. He’s so god damn deliberate in his actions that it would be very hard to NOT respect that guy if you were part of that criminal underworld. Especially when you eventually come to find out he’s an “ally” to the cartel and is essentially his own boss even if he does pay them. It’s peanuts compared to what he was earning for himself.
The plastic bag kill had to be the most funniest and my favorite Gus killed
I think Gus working in his restaurant cleaning and not sitting behind his desk, is symbolic to the idea that he will gets his hands dirty to achieve his goals.
I was so hyped for Gus reveal in this episode. I remember seeing him in background cleaning and I said "That's him"

I like how, Mike, master of plans and the one man who expects everything, was actually mildly startled by Jimmy coming back to the window to assure him he's got his back.

I thought he lied about that and gus would be digging around for nothing at first lmao
Gus also thought ahead by asking him to clean it so he can check if the watch is actually broken

One amazing detail that I love is at 0:29 Saul threw away the little basket by mistake and later at 1:52 you can see Gus noticing it and taking it out of the trash.
Dang you're right! If Jimmy planned it better he could have said he was retrieving the basket as an exuse
That's not a detail, that's literally just "something that happened in the show"
@@EvMundit's a detail from the writer/director of this episode.
They didn't have to include that, but they did and it's a very nice detail.
These two have been on this show for almost a decade and it's the only time they ever directly meet up
When you realize that Kim spoke more with Gus than Saul ever did
@@saintroddy They both had like 2 lines with him though?
For those wondering as to why Gus was clued in that something was up.
@1:51 Jimmy's very unusual car and its very unusual sounds are parked in Gus' lot (it's almost certainly intentionally left in frame through the window). He behaves strangely. Gus clearly notices Jimmy check the trash after his watch is retrieved. Jimmy refuses a free alcohol wipe, and doesn't even use a napkin. Unusual, but not alarming.
@3:49 Jimmy's, again very distinctive, car drives from a dead end (you can see the multiple signs in the frame. They even look like prop signs, normal signs aren't really that big or readable from that distance - note the "dead end" sign being the same size in the frame as the much closer stop sign). Gus notices this.
This says that Jimmy was acting suspicious and then drove to a place where no one would have any business, but has a vantage point to the restaurant. Now Gus has enough to suspect someone is snooping around.
excellent breakdown. i knew Gus was now suspicious, but I didn’t realize all of what you’ve described. i knew someone would post these details.
Great points. Check out the shot of Gus under Jimmy's arm at 0:59 immediately after Jimmy drops the watch. Jimmy's cover was 100% blown from that moment on but Gus doesn't know if its a bug or an explosive for that matter that he just heard fall into the trash until Jimmy very nervously explains that his watch had fallen off. Gus confirms this explanation with his eyes fixed on Jimmy's wrist at 1:07 & you can see his immense relief at 1:08 before he snaps his head back and resumes 'Pollos Hospitality' mode.
also at 2:58 yu can clearly see gus coming out of the restaurant looking at mike car .
@@amrahmed1074 Hehey!!! ^_^
The street where Jimmy parked really is a dead end road, with the same signs in the same place. The perspective and lens compress the distance between the stop sign and the warning sign; their relative sizes check out.
All things being equal, Gus might have guessed right, but he was paranoid af.
Jimmy being the first character from the series to interact with Gus is brilliant because due to the nature of their stories, there's few opportunities for these characters to ever interact onscreen.
And it’s the only time they have ever interacted
And also shows that Saul's "know a guy who knows a guy who knows...another guy" in BB was utter BS.

It’s crazy to me that this is the only time such iconic characters like Saul and Gus ever interact over the course of two shows.
Saul threw the non disposable basket in the trash😭😂
Watching these old clips, I was so rooting for Saul in earlier seasons and then season 6 mid season finale happened.
There's something quaint about Jimmy and Mike working together prior to Mike's employment with Gus. Mike usually does stuff alone most of the time in general, so him needing Jimmy's services speaks to a level of desperation that feels weirdly warm to me, even if it's purely business for Mike. It's like the show's limited cast of crime-adjacent character at the start means Jimmy is all Mike has to go on, be it in Witness or Five-O, and it brings a unique blend of their personalities to the table in such an appealing way.
I cheered when I saw Mike drive past the Pollos Hermanos sign and I cheered when Gus appeared. Yes he's a calculating evil criminal mastermind but he is so well written and charismatic you can't help admiring him
Imagine Walter, Jesse, Skyler, Mike, Gus, Saul, Hector, Tuco, Kim, Chuck, Hank and Lalo in the same room
Possibility, and this is just out of fun, I’m just over the wave here.
We don’t know much about Walt’s mom. So let’s say she was at Casa Tranquila at some point prior 2008. On that visit, we got Walter and Skyler, and since I can’t see why Hank would go there let’s say he joined them with Marie.
To get Jesse… maybe he went there with his aunt, to visit his grandma or another family member. Maybe he spots Mr. White from school, but says nothing since could be awkward.
Now Hector. He lives there at some point in BCS S5. We got him, we got Lalo, maybe Gus is there as well to see how he is for “compromise” with Bolsa, Tuco… oh God damn it no man this is impossible… I quit.

0:30, a bold move. As any Los Pollos regular knows, putting the wrappings in the trash is Gus's job. And Gus's job alone.
Imagine this being the first time anybody sees gus..he's so wholesome as a boss even helping clean tables
Tell that to Victor lmao
I like how both the shows become WAY better when Gus shows up.
How fortunate for Jimmy that he sought a career as a lawyer and not as a secret agent.
This is probably the only time Saul and Gus are face to face in the entirety of the saga
Every time I seem them in the restaurant I want to try Los Pollos Hermanos. I bet it's really good.
Me too!! Seriously! Gus takes so much pride in his food for being fast food it sure looks delicious.
Got some actual restaurants in the west coast. Not sure if they're in other states or not but we have one in Vegas. They have menu items called, "The Heisenberg," "The Pinkman," "Slaw Goodman," etc. They're a bit pricey but the food is actually quite nice. They change their product at times but for the most part it's the same. Also, if you're loyal to the restaurant and buy regularly, the restaurant can send you $11 off for an order on Postmates for example. Highly recommended if you wanna try a nice chicken place, and if you're a fan of Breaking Bad.
That Gustavo guy seems really nice, I sure hope nothing bad happens to him.
lol well...
2:55 Jimmy, meanwhile, isn't exactly the living embodiment of professionalism.
Somehow I feel like Gus genuinely took pleasure in sifting through the trash to retrieve a customers watch for them. Either he’s exceptionally good at putting on his Pillar of the community persona or he truly is the embodiment of customer service
I agree. I feel that he genuinely does like being more than just a kingpin, as we saw in BCS Season 6. He isn't just doing it for appearance's sake, it's more like an "escape" from his criminal activities that he can go to each day.
@@boogaloobender3462 I always pictured it as something he completely owns - not a cartel toy, not associates to please, nothing - just his own restaurant brand and total control over it. Of course he uses it to distribute the drugs but you can tell how he thinks of it when he says "it is a cartel business, but it is mine". So until he could take his revenge and gain supreme ownership of the whole operation, he found joy in having his smaller business not affected by anyone but him.
I'd be inclined to agree, but Jimmy threw him off. He already knew something up with him
3:19 Jimmy: "Hey, who's got your back, huh? Me" reminds me of when Mike says something along the lines of "It doesn't hurt to have someone watching your back" to Walter in Breaking Bad.

I like how Jimmy was super awkward and obvious in Better Call Saul. This is the only scene so far where Jimmy has a conversation with Gus and which is one of the main reasons why Mike refers to Saul as 'the Lawyer' in Breaking Bad. Enough to trust Mike trusts Saul but not enough to know his name or contact Saul directly
He knows his name
Havent seen this show in a while what if gus asked to clean his watch to see if the hatch really was loose
When in doubt, just assume Gus knows. He knows what is going on.
I should just start rewatching it all at this point

Would've love to see more interaction between Saul and gus
I don’t know why but I can’t stop watching this.
Opens up the garbage can and gus is inside looking out at him
"Can I help you?"
What a kind and hospitable man, surely he's not involved with a major drug trade.
i believe this is the one interaction Gus and Saul have over the course of either show
Notice Gus says, "We'll find it for you", representing the entire Los Pollos chain and that he says, "it was my pleasure". Some restaurants and even hospitals train people to say that to give the impression you want to be of service to them. Chick-Fil-A employees say that all the time.
Ok
Gus realized at the end there that Saul was in the game.
Every freakin time it makes me want fried chicken. Say what you will about Gus, but he was polite and professional.
Hell yes. Watching this makes me so hungry for some curly fries and fried chicken.
The courier goes there and Gus or his staff can see if the Courier is being tailed.
I dont remember that encounter being mentioned again. I wonder if gus was aware that jimmy was the guy he saw here, while kim was at his house. It just seems like something insignificant that mike wouldnt have any reason to tell gus about. But gus probably learned his name when kim was involved, and by breaking bad, gus wouldve seen his ads and have a face to that name, if he hadn't been told by mike about it. After all this was before mike worked for gus, or even knew who gus is.
Mike was doing "tell me again" before it was cool.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like the watching your back part kind of goes back to breaking bad when Mike finishes removing the bugs from Walt's house and before he leaves he tells Walt it doesn't hurt to have someone watch your back. Probably no connection at all because it's a pretty common saying but who knows
Mike's side GTA missions
The man running this restaurant seems very nice.
Im pretty sure Gus saw him unclasping his watch after he asked Saul if he could help him. He knows the score but played along.
Great scene from a great show!
Fun fact: This is the only scene in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul universe that features these two together
This kind of scenes make me wonder if Mike cared about Saul to a certain level or if it was just business to him. I like to think he kinda did because, unlike Walt or Gus, Saul (just like Jessie) seem to have some good in them no matter how hidden it may seem due to their persona. I even wonder if he kind of cared about Gus and Walt somehow
Jimmy putting that watch back on without cleaning it is the worst crime of his entire career.
Mike should be asking how on earth he finished his meal in 5 minutes.
Gus wears clip on ties.
It's messed up when a drug cartel leader has better customer service skills than most companies you deal with.
1:36 "it's been in worse places" is that actually a Pulp ficiton reference?
It might just be a reference to the scene in season 1 where Jimmy goes dumpster diving at the old folks home.
Two of the main characters in Better Call Saul and in Breaking Bad, yet this is the only time they meet
you're right its funny they only meet for like 30 seconds despite the fact both are major characters in 2 shows
Gus knew his courier was tailed, so he gave him a do-not-make-a-trade sign, all offscene. So all Saul, and Mike got was just a customer with a bag, with product, ordered something, paid, ate and left. Just my food for thought.
Lol we need a video of all Jimmy's movie references!
