  • Rhythm: The Video Game is designed to take you from the most basic rhythms to the most advanced in a structured, logical way. Level 1 explains quarter notes (crotchets) and quarter rests (crochet rests), along with 3 exercises to master the concept.

Basic Teacher Guide: If you're using this in a classroom or private lesson setting, I wouldn't throw your students into this unprepared. First, establish how exactly you are going to clap/count these rhythms. Do you want the student counting out loud, in their head, using rhythm sticks, playing a concert C, or some combination of the above? My own students use rhythm sticks (drum sticks, essentially) while counting out loud. I use this series with 4th and 5th graders.
Level 1 Tutorial: If my students aren't paying attention, we watch this part again. Sometimes I pause and ask a question or two after this section.
Level 1-1: I play and count the rhythms with the video, and my students echo me. If they have a hard time coming in precisely on beat, practice a few echo rhythms before the video with a metronome. You'll find that they especially struggle with keeping that pulse going when there is a rest on beat 4 or 1, so these might need to be practiced as ostinatos first.
Level 1-2: I tell my students to hold up the measure number with their fingers as soon as they know the answer. If more than half of them got it wrong or weren't participating, I pause the video and have them count it out loud a few times to explain why the note was wrong.
Level 1-3: Students count the rhythms after they hear "go!". Don't count it with them, but use the time to look around and assess how many understand the concept.
Pacing: I don't move on to the next level until MOST of my class (80%) is demonstrating an understanding of how to count these rhythms. If they aren't there yet, we'll review and then repeat the video during the next class. If we have to repeat a level twice, we move back by one level.
Fun Ideas: You can make this series into a competition between classes. Which class can progress to the highest level by the end of the school year? I keep a scoreboard on Google Slides, only displaying first place because I don't want to shame a class that is in last place. Maybe give the class in first place at the end of each semester a period of free choice time or extra games that they enjoy. Private lesson teachers can do the same thing, displaying the name of their student who has progressed to the highest level.

Fantastic. My mom is learning piano and having a hard time with counting, and this will be very helpful. Thanks!

Awesome! All of the exercises can be played on a concert C. I also suggest counting along to the notes as you play (except for the rests.) I plan on doing A LOT of videos in this series, because there is so much to explore with rhythm.

Fortunately the counting itself is fairly universal. I get a lot of confused comments on my videos that use moveable do solfège.
