      So witch engine do like, should ppl wait for the hybrid? Seems the V6 is more reliable easier to fix. Don't like the 2023 plastic grill, the 2024 looks like you could put a 4x4 bumper on with wench making it better than Land cruiser.

    The Overtrail edition has both center and rear lockers. When combined, there is a 50/50 split of power to front/back axle + locked rear wheels which will spin in unison. This will get you out of even situations with diagonal traction loss (two diagonal wheels in the air). There really isnt much of a difference in performance compared to ALSO having a front locker except in the most extreme of offroading situations. Most people are already heavily modifying their vehicles by this point for things like extreme rock crawling. Just my two cents.

    Since the GX 460 has proven long-term reliability and fairly strong aftermarket support in the off-roading industry, I would not suggest buying the 550. At the very least, wait 2-3 years for Toyota/Lexus to work out the bugs. Regardless of how many bugs they work out, just know that there's little to no chance that the turbo will ever last as long as their bulletproof V8.

    I think that adding the locker is still way better in terms of cost of ownership than going for G class or a Range Rover. The gas mileage will be dwarfed by these cars' mechanic charges, not to mention the times spent at the shop. As for the size, well, this is customer specific.

  • @van_mod1
    @van_mod1 8 місяців тому +2

    The front locker doesn’t lock the front wheels to the rear wheels. The center differential lock does that and is standard on the GX550. A front locker locks the two front wheels together to spin at the same rate regardless of traction. For me, the key Toyota traction aid is A-Trac which operates in 4L and sometimes is better than a rear locker in managing power to the wheels that have traction.

      I have a LX570 and it is great. I love it. BUT, it does cost a lot of more money to fix and maintain. The 13 mpg city isn't a lot of fun too. I do a lot of miles for my work so I've already done the big 110,000 tune up/repair period. Cost me $11,900 to replace all the warn out steering components and new shocks and struts. Had to replace the water pump and the spark plugs were outragously expensive. If you have the cash get one for sure. Mine is a 2017 with 133,800ish miles and I hope to keep it forever.

      @@SuperSnakePlissken that is awesome! I would love to take yours out for a ride! I want the 2006 LX 470 with low miles. Believe it or not I get about 20 mpg on the interstate. I don't do 70 though. I do 63 tops. I even get about 18 around town but I drive slow, coast up to stop signs, I don't ever floor it to merge unless I absolutely have to. I call it mellow driving. It's actually been good for me mentally too. This says a lot
      considering I use to race stock cars.

    • @SuperSnakePlissken
      @SuperSnakePlissken Рік тому

      @@elijuh3My LX570 gets 13.5-14.5 city depending on how hard I drive it. Highway it will get 18.5'ish pretty consistently. I don't complain about that at all due to the fact it is a 5.7L V8 and AWD/4WD.
      I debated heavily on getting a LX470 when my wife and I were in the market, and it pretty much came down to two things. 1.) the 5.7L V8 had a lot more power and was a chain and not a timing belt. I looked into that maintenance and it was $3500 to change back in 2017 so I cannot even imagine what it is today (that included the tensioner and waterpump). Overall, the 5.7L V8 driving experience paired to the six speed transmission just drove so much better than the LX470 I had test drove.
      2.) The other thing was my wife and both preferred the styling of the LX570 and creature comforts that it had over the LX470...and the lights! The headlights were absolutely far superior on the LX570.
      Is the LX470 a bad vehicle of course not. To each their own.

Earlier this year, I was riding across the Sahara Desert in Morocco in a Land Cruiser Prado - the cousin of my GX powered by a diesel. A heck of a performance. I don't understand why the new Land Cruiser is going to have a 4 cyl twin turbocharged engine with some sort of electric hybrid system. I can't imagine going offroad in something that complicated. Surely people in the deserts and jungles of S. America and Africa are not going to trust a Land Cruiser with all that crap. They will probably get a simple diesel version.

Meanwhile 70 series has appeared at the same time as the 60 series, as a more robust cheaper option and the sub-split heavy/light duty has happened there too, where the 70-heavy duty kept its original form more or less up to this day, and light duty 70-series was given the name "prado" and has started its own model line 70-90-120-150-250. Because the interior is very much identical to my 2010 and mpg hasn’t changed. Also don’t love the new grills. I love the look of the 550 but due to mpg and pricing I may end up in a Highlander. I've worked on a lot of the 460's, just did a 21 a couple weeks ago, you are not missing ANYTHING. I literally couldn't tell the difference, I thought it was a 16 or something. Keep your 2010 that you don't have to worry about babying. Your mileage is going to continue to be offset by your cost of ownership. I haven't been into the 550 but I have torn up a 23 LX, so I think the new gx is going to be legitimately superior. Based on the tundra and sequoia, expect significantly worse mileage than advertised if you load that thing up, I know people that have both. But you know that, you already talked about the mileage. I love the concept of the 550 but 17 mpg is extremely not impressive.
      But if you need to get rid of the gx and want a 3rd row and better mileage get an in infinity qx80 until you decide. You'll get slightly better mileage out of a much bigger motor around town, and you get most of the best things toyota is just putting in their trd trims in a 5-8 year old vehicle. That's what I'm planning on doing until about 2032 when I shoould be able to afford a 24 GX, ha.
      Highlanders are really unimpressive compared to the GX, to me. They just feel like paper mache to me. I just know my family had bad luck with them and they're an awkward size. Big but without some of the benefits you'd expect. That was the previous gen though, curious what you think.

      If thinking about going with a highlander, consider the new grand highlander, or a sienna. Our '22 AWD sienna is supposed to get 35mpg. We deal with a lot of snow, and go up and over the highest year round pass in the Sierras 10+ times a week, but we're still getting over 30. From 100ft, I saw a highlander from the side and thought it was our sienna, until I noticed the 2nd set of doors were not sliders. The sienna gives you much more room than the standard highlander. But I just saw a grand highlander at the dealer, and it is much closer in size, but taller and with some more ground clearance. The grand highlander is probably a better choice if you ever go on a rougher off-road trail, or if you just prefer standard doors to a slider.

    Front locker with the modern MTS system that the Overtrail truck really isn't necessary. I've seen MTS in action in a GX460 (a friend of mine added it using parts sourced from overseas) and I am pretty sold on that. That said, adding a front locker and air compressor is probably the first thing I'd do if I bought a GX550. Also, stating that the GX is just an over prices 4Runner is really not accurate. While the GX460 and 4Runner share the sam LC150 platform, the 5th gen 4Runner doesn't offer a V8. All things being equal, I'd rather have the v8. I am interested, however, to see what Toyota is going to offer in the 6th gen 4Runner, as the new US market Land Cruiser (PRADO) on the LC250 platform is in the same market segment as the 4Runner.
