Never thought to do a quilt using a layer cake and thank you for showing us some masculine colour fabrics. Inspired me to make a quilt for my son who so far doesn’t like the fancy patchwork patterns. This is going in my “a quilting life planner” I am getting for Christmas as a project for 2021.
This is timely information as I have been putting my flannel fabrics in one place in anticipation of making a simple quilt as you describe. I appreciate the tip about using the walking foot during construction as well as the simple, straight-line quilting. I was hoping to get your advice on seam allowance width, especially since the quilting pattern does not cross over the seam allowances, thus no additional stabilization of the seams joining the squares. Also, I will not use flannel for binding. The open weave will not stand up to normal wear and tear, especially if the quilt is well-loved and used a lot. My choice will be a good quality cotton binding, double layer, and I usually go with bias binding for the added resistance to wearing through, as happens along the grain line when cutting binding with the grain.
I've bought some flannel layer cakes and jelly roll. Because of shrinking, I may just make this for myself to see what happens,.😉 thanks for the video!
You can avoid the bulk of four corners coming together by off-setting the rows half way (assemble like bricks). This will result in a half size block at alternating ends. Piece of cake. 😊
Hello, Sherri. Thank you for sharing about your son's Christmas flannel quilt. I have the flannel front and back fabrics, had initially planned on a traditional tie child's quilt, but have held off feeling there is something missing. When I caught sight of your layer cake flannel quilt, I felt "connected" to the style (yours is lovely, great colors and patterns). Am heavily re-assessing using a similar patchwork style for my child's flannel quilt. Hope to be able to pick up your PDF for this quilt. Thank you!
Love this! I just acquired Farmhouse Flannels layer cakes and would love to make this quilt. I see the link where others requested it; however, it doesn't work.
Beautiful quilt. It looks so snuggly. I am always concerned with shrinkage when I use flannel. I realize you can’t wash precuts, but are you worried how it will look after it is washed? Also, what batting did you use?
In one of her videos , Laura from Sew Very Easy , washes her layer cake and spins the squares in a lettuce spinner. It’s on UA-cam. It’s called « How to Wash Fat Quarters and Precuts’.🌸🌺
I made a flannel quilt last year, but I prewashed the flannel, and I am so glad I did because there was so much shrinkage! did you prewash the fabrics for your quilt? If not are you worried about what will happen after the first wash?
The flannels will shrink together with the first wash. If you let it dry flat instead of in the dryer there will be less shrinkage. On a sunny day put a bed sheet on a fry lawn, then put the quilt down. Cover it with another bed sheet to help prevent fading from the sun. Be sure to use cold water to wash the quilt and add a couple of the color grabber sheets too. Take care!
I want to do a a quilt with a panel and flannels but I don't want to just to be blocks . You say don't do intricate designs but that's just short of telling me what I can do or what your experience is like, how small is too intricate. I would like some more information on this subject before I start cutting up the flannels that I bought. Also get the questions answered about prewashing I'm not a big pre washer on most things but Flanel has always seemed a little too loose. And any special considerations as far as how wide to make the seams or any other special handling on something other than just a plain block. Thank you for your time and expertise!
Thanks for the Flannel quilt video. I am using flannel & cotton fabric on the back of my quilt along with a panel on the back. Do you have any suggestions on sewing with a large panel. My panel is 44”long x 27”wide and my quilt size is a king. Thanks again
Should you pre-wash flannel? I have heard it shrinks quite a bit. Should you use a different kind of needle when sewing with flannel? And is flannel more stretchy than regular cotton? You mentioned you shouldn't make intricate blocks with flannel, but you didn't say why. Is it because of the thickness? Thanks for the video on flannel. They are nice quilts but are heavier than a regular cotton quilt.
It’s too bad that she doesn’t seem to be answering/responding to all these inquiries.. I know a flannel fabric needs to be pre-washed and since this is precuts I’m sure she didn’t pre-wash.. I don’t know how people can make any flannel quilts using precuts, since it really shrinks due to the nature of the fabric. I was told it shrinks like 20%..which is a lot. Cotton flannel is not really stretchy but it’s much thicker and fuzzier than regular flat quilting cotton, that’s why it’s very warm but much heavier too in weight. She said not to use intricate design as it’s harder to cut as it’s so thick than regular cotton and it also shifts quite a bit when you’re sewing. So if you were to piece bias seams for triangles or y-seam for example, it would be much harder as it shifts when you’re putting all the pieces together (it tends to move a lot and doesn’t stay in one place). It would also be much harder to keep points for matching seams. You can use regular sewing machine needles but there’re quilting needles (much sharper points), and a new needle would help.
Love this quilt. What type of batting did you use on this quilt. I have never quilted with flannel before but have recently purchased a flannel layer cake and having watched your video I am very keen to try this one. 😊
Hi Sherri! I loved your tutorial for when flannel quilt and wanted to get the pdf that you spoke about but I can’t find it. Is it possible to send it to me? I have a layer cake and charm pack to create together.
Can you starch the flannel before sewing it? I tried sewing flannel before and it was a nightmare. It came out wonky. Also, does ironing with steam help or hinder flannel?
Really like this! I am always on the hunt for “masculine” looking quilts as I have only men to sew for!
Your flannel quilt looks beautiful! I love it!

Love the flannel quilt. My grandsons would enjoy a blanket like that.

Thank you so much for all these tips! I love your flannel quilt!
I am very happy with this video. I am considering making a quilt like this for my husband so this is just what I needed. I love the simplicity of it.💕
I have used fleece as a batting and enjoy the weight of that.
omg! I am so inspired to finally make a patch work quilt!
The question of mixing flannel and regular cottons was going to be a question for your next UA-cam with Chelsi thanks for covering that.
I've bought some flannel layer cakes and jelly roll. Because of shrinking, I may just make this for myself to see what happens,.😉 thanks for the video!
I made one with 5” squares and now I want to do a 10” layer cake. Thank you. I wonder if a batting would make it too heavy?
You can avoid the bulk of four corners coming together by off-setting the rows half way (assemble like bricks). This will result in a half size block at alternating ends. Piece of cake. 😊
Good idea! 🌺🌸
Absolutely beautiful!
You son will love this quilt! Did you use1/4 or 1/2 inch seam allowance? Thank you for all the great information. I'm starting one for next Christmas!

Do the binding in the black, it’s beautiful
Please mention what batting you used, if any. I made a flannel quilt years ago with regular 80/20 and it seemed to heavy when it was done.
Me too! Too thick. 🇦🇺

Put the bed sheet on a dry lawn, not a fry lawn!!! Sorry about the error. It made me laugh!
It is such a lovely quilt. I’d like to know whether or not that you wash the flannel before you cut the flannel and backing. Thanks Beth

Awesome 😎 Quilt....I’m inspired to make this quilt I did not see your pattern link under the video Thanks for sharing
Hi....the PDF is in her blog. Open the description box below video and there’s a link to the blog. I love sewing with flannel. I hope you do too!
@@kathyvan9112 do you prewash big pieces? I have seen comments from other people that it shrinks quite a bit.
I'm sorry I forgot to add the link for some reason. Here it is: drive.google.com/file/d/1dkvHt1a8Jm5v795mhH7QFveuxAVLeeJB/view

@@KittenBowl1 Thank you for stepping in to answer my questions on flannel. I hate it when they never answer.
Thanks for this! Would you give the same advice for wool? I bought a wool layer cake recently with no idea how to use it!
Hi and thanks a lot for the tutorial. Have you used some batting in between the two layers of flannel? 🌸🌸
Love this quilt. What type of batting did you use on this quilt. I have never quilted with flannel before but have recently purchased a flannel layer cake and having watched your video I am very keen to try this one. 😊
Also did you prewash the flannel before you used it?

What seam allowance do you recommend using with brushed flannel? What size needle do you recommend?
Thank you for the pattern. Did you use batting? If so, what kind?
I was hoping you would show us sewing on the flannel binding....is there another video using flannel binding???
Did you serge or zig all the raw edges to prevent fraying?
Does Farmhouse have prints like these in regular cotton
Hi
Great quilt ❤️ did you buy the layer cake pre cut or did you cut from yardage? Looking to make one myself. Please advise
Sherri, I don't see the pdf for the flannel quilt pattern. Am I overlooking something?
I'm sorry I forgot to add the link for some reason. Here it is: drive.google.com/file/d/1dkvHt1a8Jm5v795mhH7QFveuxAVLeeJB/view
Did you pre wash the flannel?
👍❤️😊
Thanks 👍
Patchwork flannel quilt
Did you use batting?
What about whether to wash flannel before using?
Beautiful! I can not see the PDF LINK under the video!
I'm sorry I forgot to add the link for some reason. Here it is: drive.google.com/file/d/1dkvHt1a8Jm5v795mhH7QFveuxAVLeeJB/view
Can you use regular flannel in a quilt?
So did you prewash the flannel. I’m wondering if it will shrink and cause the quilt to be wonky. Too much work and money to not have it be perfect
Can you starch the flannel before sewing it? I tried sewing flannel before and it was a nightmare. It came out wonky. Also, does ironing with steam help or hinder flannel?
Did you wash your flannels first?
Always prewash. Kind of hard to do with pre-cuts so the smallest I buy is fat quarters.
What was the fabric line you used again please?
I wasn’t able to find the .pdf?
Where can we download the PDF?
I'm sorry I forgot to add the link for some reason. Here it is: drive.google.com/file/d/1dkvHt1a8Jm5v795mhH7QFveuxAVLeeJB/view
I didn't see the pdf as mentioned.
How do you make a flannel with no wadding?
Batting in between?
It would have looked good as a tied quilt also.
Where is the PET please?

Sorry PDF
Thanks for sharing the tips! Did you use batting for this quilt? I wonder will cotton batting will work? TiA
