  • In today's episode, we'll be revisiting the stunning Hamar people of Ethiopia! 🇪🇹 Many of you loved this part of my very first episode so I decided to make a full-length video to fully explore the culture around their hair. I also touch on other groups like the Banna and Kara, who also live around the Omo Valley and share traditions with the Hamar. Please enjoy! ☺️
    As always, the playlist with all the videos used to make this episode (including the music) is here: loading...taking me some time to gather
    For now, here is a google doc with the link to the all the videos/music: docs.google.co...

    Thanks for the video. So, these people don't wear a hairstyle or an accessory without a meaning behind it!! Our civilized societies now lack time and patience to craft something close to our heart and wear it. I remember Black panther fashion designer Ruth Carter saying triangle shape symbolises Family in African tribes- Mother, Father and child and she used it extensively in designing the costumes. I feel every shape/pattern they wear will have some significance. If possible plz make a video on the significance of patterns and colors in their attire..

    • @EthioBelle
      @EthioBelle  2 роки тому +1

      That’s the beauty of it, everything is symbolic in some way! Wow, I never knew that about the costumes on Black Panther 😮. And I love that suggestion Teja, I will definitely try to talk more about the significance of patterns and colours in clothing in my next Our Roots video.

    I wish we as a people would stop using the term “dread”locks. There’s nothing dreadful about our hair. Even the Bible refers to them as locks. Jesus ad locks. We need to get rid of the “dread” colonizer term once and for all.

    Do you know if acne is prevalent in cultures where animal fat is used so much on skin and hair?
    Edit: I'm asking because from these videos everyone has nice skin here..

    • @EthioBelle
      @EthioBelle  2 роки тому +8

      That's a great question. These are just some of my thoughts! I assume acne is not prevalent because from the hundreds of videos I've seen (of African groups only), everyone has flawless skin. From my research, butter and red ocher have great properties for healthy skin (antioxidants, lots of vitamins and protect against UV ray damage). Acne can also be affected by diet (although the link is unclear) and these groups eat natural, non-sugary, unprocessed foods. The part I'm unsure/confused about is that these groups do drink a lot of dairy products which are thought to cause acne. But the benefits of the butter + red ocher seem to overshadow the potential risks of eating a fatty diet on the skin. I hope that helps :)

    • @Mariathinking
      @Mariathinking 2 роки тому +3

      @@EthioBelle yes the consumption of dairy confuses me too...but prehaps they are consuming organic dairy and haven't added hormones to their livestock. Thank you for your reply and I really really love your channel.
