When I go on holidays, I often buy a ‘useful’ thing in the local shop as a memory, like a kitchen towel, a bar of soap, a dish cloth… things I do use in my daily life. Every time I use them, they give me fond memories of my trip to the Provence, Italy, Denmark…

Minimalism is fine but there is nothing like a nice old fashioned home with carpets and character and a book library and color and culture . I do follow for the ideas so I can really help myself consume less but I feel that everyone should keep their personality .
Our houses don’t have to look white and grey to be minimal and sustainable. From whatever background you come you can adjust with your personal taste 😊

this is the exact way I shop for souvenirs too, love it. Or when traveling domestically in my own country I often shop at thrift stores/secondhand shops and get things that are unique and practical, for example we have new lampshades in our bedroom that are from a thrift store in Green Bay, Wisconsin and I fondly think of that entire trip. Way better than a Green Bay sweatshirt I would wear 2 times and forget.

A Good souvenir is to send yourself some post cards. You can keep them in a small box if you want to look at them and read about what you did on that trip later if you want. Or display them for a little while. Bonus they are cheap and dated for you. I also occasionally get tea towels because I can swap that as my 'decoration' in the kitchen. We stopped buying any Christmas decorations and got rid of most of what we had in storage. I kept a few things (bells to hang on the door knob so they jingle whenever friends visit, and a banner for my front door with a message of peace and joy, and a small copper sculpture of a pine tree made by a local artist) that I really like and are meaningful to me. It has reduced my stress and anxiety around the holidays because I no longer feel obligated to do a tree and drag out all those decorations, then have to put them all away after the holiday.

I did the same thing, after last Christmas I donated 3/4 of our Christmas decor and also our big tree, now that we are retired we decided to get a smaller tree. We donated most ornaments , tree, and decor

We’ve gotten rid of lots of Christmas stuff. I used to decorate a lot! A few years ago, maybe 2020 or 2021, when we were still dealing with the Covid pandemic, I spent too much time on fb following Christmas pages. I ended up buying Christmas bedding for 3 bedrooms, lots of trees in every room, I bought all kids of other stuff and took down everything from my built in bookcases and replaced with Christmas items. It was nuts! So ever since then, I’ve been getting rid of more and more each year. Even my 13 year old is burned out. The kids had all kinds of Christmas stuff for their rooms and finally decluttered some. My 13 yr old son has a large nutcracker collection and he was going to get rid of it but I won’t let him. I told him he might want it when he grows up and save it until then. I don’t want him to have regrets and he doesn’t have to put it out. So this year I think all I’ll do is a tree and my door wreath which is Rudolph and Clarice. My favorite Christmas movie. Speaking of movies, I think I need to see what else I can declutter in our dvd collection. Almost anything I want to watch is on some streaming service!

When it comes to souvenirs, I like to do something creative to remember it. When I went to Paris I brought with me a paint-by-number (having no real talent myself) of a girl looking at the Eiffel Tower to paint there. In Belgium, I found a little fabric shop where I bought some lace and leather that I later sewed an outfit out of. After London, I drew/water-colored a simple picture of the city.

Loving the advice here. Do not agree with the advice to avoid decorating with words. Yes, having the words on your walls or around in your decorations can be mentally stimulating. Which is exactly why it is good to decorate with words that evoke positivity if you need positivity. If you are struggling with depression, it can be very helpful to have some positive reminders just scattered around the home. I love my cheap Dollar Tree ceramic coasters because they are very functional when I'm drinking cold beverages and they say motivational things like keep laughing or this home is filled with love. I love the alphabet magnets that I put on the fridge because I can change up the quote as needed and every time I go through the kitchen, my fridge tells me something to lift my mood. I love having a few t-shirts that say something encouraging like if you can't see the sunshine, be the sunshine.
If you choose to decorate with words, then it's good to carefully choose the words. To see what they say to you and how they make you feel on first glance. If they make you feel good, and if you need to feel good, then by all means use them!

I downsized a few years ago to a much smaller house which helped me to let go of many unessesary things and life is just more enjoyable, peaceful and simplistic when you don't have to "manage" so much stuff! Those boxes are very comfortable to use, and it looks neat and doesn't generate visual noise when i open a cupboard and see a few boxes instead of a hundred small items.

So here are my tips on minimalism:
I must agree on books! I read on my kindle, it's both practical and minimalistic. Also - my creative tip - do your own cover for it (from an old time planner etc.) - it's really fun! I also like to create my own clothes from the old ones/second hands, and also my own jewelry.
On souvenirs and cosmetics - I mix that. I like to buy handmade soaps/hand creams etc. when I'm on a vacation, it is always very unique piece, and a cube of soap lasts very long. In general - For me, being on a trip is actually the best time to buy something practical. When I know that I both need and want something (like a new soap) I (if possible) wait until the trip, and if I still feel I should buy that, It's my souvenir!
Also, it sounds very weird, but I like to go to fast fashion/ cosmetics/ home decor stores, and I remind myself that I don't need it. "Oh, look at that cute shirt! It is clear that they wanna sell it so hard! And look how they try to manipulate me with this pink cup! Sorry guys, but I don't need it."
Honestly, it's really funny, I recommend that for sure.

I have an ongoing wishlist and I try to find some of those items when I go on vacation as my “souvenir”. For example, my small summer purse was wearing out, so I looked for one while in vacation. Now I have a purse I use every day that also reminds me of visiting cute little shops while on vacation!

I used to have a lot of seasonal and holiday decor. I got rid of 90% of it and now really only have Christmas decor that I've also pared way down to only my absolute favorites. So much easier to put up and take down now that there's less of it. I also practice a "one in = one out" rule the best I can. Your videos are a nice reminder and always a welcome moment of relaxation and reflection. Thank you!

Lovely as always to “visit” with you Vera ❤ I agree with you on all your ideas, especially Fantasy clutter (identity clutter is another one). It’s taken a LONG time to realize that what appeals to me may not be what complements me, whether in lifestyle or clothing. Recognizing who you are AT THIS MOMENT and making sure your things reflect that is a huge part of peace and joy. I decluttered everything that is not me “now”, knowing that those things can bless someone else, and I have complete and utter peace, freedom, and joy. There are of course things from past seasons of my life that are precious mementos, but they are in 2 file box memory boxes that I can look over anytime.

I've often found that with the rising cost of things keeping a reasonable stock of things some old some new is wise. Especially with non perishables I disagree with decluttering unless there's absolutely no space. Most stuff we have we need. Simply, we get tired and bored of seeing them. To declutter my clothes I store stuff seasonally and go back to those boxes to renew my wardrobe and store boring items. Rediscovering your stuff is amazing. Thank you for your videos

This week I’m actually donating most of my books because I listen to audiobooks from the library now.

We have started looking for handmade Christmas ornaments from places we visit. I love handmade ornaments and it reminds us of the trip. I met a lady who collects earrings. There are plenty of things you can get elsewhere as souvenirs and you can use and enjoy. To each his own and I agree with your approach, I try to buy something I will use, or replace something I own that the new item is an improvement. This helps check and balance and requires much self( and spousal ) control.

I'm relatively new to minimalism, but I love how intentional my shopping decisions have become. I started by decluttering my makeup collection, and then I did the same with the rest of things I own. Now everytime I see something I feel tempted to buy, I ask myself if I actually need it, and most of the time I don't. It's much better to own fewer long-lasting, high-quality items than a lot of unnecessary stuff that just take up space and cause visual clutter.

I also don't own a dryer (or washer) and I only own one set of sheets :: cries :: but we go to the laundromat for sheets (I handwash otherwise). It gets cleaned fast.
I do not have nicknacks at all. I do not like them one bit. They are dusty and not worth it at all to me. I used to collect loads of things that needed dusting, so having none just makes me much happier.
I am impressed that your white top is so white after three years.
I am a book nerd. Most of my books are library books (I have read 66 books so far this year). I also have digital books and audiobooks. I am so with you on passing books on, etc.
What you said about the pretty designed and packaged items at stores making you want them but resisting is so good! I love your Studio Ghibli art by the way. Very pretty.

I'm glad to hear what you said about the seasonal decor. I have never been the person who liked to celebrate the change of seasons or important holydays by changing the home decor. Back when i was a kid, my parents were very big on that, but what it usually ment was that when parents were home and exhausted from work, it was on me and my sister to put things up, keep things fresh, fix broken pieces etc, then clean and put everything away once the season was over. I hated it. It was a pointless chore that aleats left glitter and broken pieces of plastic, dried flowers, seeds, or dust mark on everything. Once i got my own place i swore to never do those things again ever. I have one nice vase in the living room that can accomodate flowers or other decorative arrangements that may or may not correspond with the current season or holiday. Usually it contains a handmade paper flower bouquet, but sometimes i replace that with real tulips or blooming tree branches or something else of that nature and that's it.

    Great vídeo as always, Vera!
Something that helped my husband and I when we moved in together was to think about our life, interests before buying stuff. For example: we bought 4 plates, bowls and glasses because we don't host parties at home, maybe 1 or 2 people so that's what we need. And then we have space to storage a food processor that we love.
It's great to bring these ideas to our lives so we buy things more intentionally to fit our lives.

You show what has worked for you and the reasoning behind it, but aren’t telling everyone to be the same, but suggest ways that concept might apply to others. This is a really good video. I love dealing with household items so much. In my city I have a way to get a lot of household items for free when the students leave at the end of the year. They are forced to bin the things they can't take with them and these videos help me select what i get from their boxes and bags they leave in their yards. I get things like incense sticks, good quality candles, art materials, cleaning and laundry products and beauty products. When i get them i swap them out for my old belongings which i toss. It keeps my home varied so we aren't looking at the same old things and saves me a lot of money going shopping and its fun. They also throw out a lot of fancy dress which my daughter loves. This year i found a load of designer clothing and washed it all for a kid in my neighbourhood as his family dont have much at all. We come back with heaps and heaps and im blessed as my friend lives in a huge house just for him so his place gives us time to deal with it according to your videos. I'm wondering if its the same for you guys as it is here in the UK? Xxx

No. 15 about containers resonates at the moment! I realise just how many I have and how freeing it has been to get rid of some of them. I am trying to get possessions down to exactly what I need and use (no more impulse buys and "just-in-case" items). I have found that getting rid of one item means you can get rid of a few more and even if just small items they no longer need to be stored and no longer need a container. Containers are my catnip - I find it hard to resist them though!

A little tip on the subscription boxes too--if you REALLY feel you must try it, only do it for 3 months. I did this last year because I saw some things I did want to try in the first box and 3 boxes was just enough. I actually did get several things that I absolutely loved and it did save me money. I passed on the items I couldn't use to a friend and it was all good. It scratched the itch AND I found a new face wash I didn't know about that is the best I've ever used. Otherwise, yes, you end up with a bunch of stuff that just takes up too much space.

I'm about to close on a house next month. It's my first house and I need to buy a good number of basics as I currently live with my parents and got rid of all my furniture and home items when I moved from my previous place halfway across the country (U S.). I'm trying to keep my spending in check because I really don't want to go into debt for furniture. I bought a bed/mattress and a new couch/chair, but everything else I'm planning to buy second-hand and refinish myself, if it needs it. And I'm not going out looking for everything I think I "should" have. I am planning to live in my space with what I currently own and as something comes to mind, I'll put it on a list and take time to really think on each item. Thank you so much for this reminder to not go overboard with buying "stuff" that is completely unnecessary!
