Song Sparrow sunning away parasites and an elusive Butterfly.

My favorite Sparrow the beautiful Song sparrow. I did not recognize all puffed up. This time of year birds bake in hot sun to rid parasites, then they preen. Still unsure about the Butterfly I did not research it. It was worn/torn so it's been here awhile.
Just today I saw a robin out back tipped right over facing up beak wide open 😂. And a Bluejay laying down in garden, wings spread out head turned up facing sun. Summer fun with nature. 💙

It has its beak open to cool down. Or is it hoping for an insect to fly in😁A gorgeous little cutie. Baby birds are so adorable 👍

They open beaks because of the heat, it's like panting for birds.☺ The "sunning" helps the preen oil to spread across the feathers and drives parasites out from within the plumage.

I love sparrows. They are so cute. Since their beaks are open, I'm guessing they are hot since I remember reading that is how they cool off.

Yes, all birds do it. It is called "sunning". People think the bird is hurt, but they are not they are tryin to rid parasites off feathers by baking in hot sun! Then they preen. So fun to watch them. Beaks wide open, some lay flat on ground wings spread open across grass like they are hurt...they aren't hurt. Just sunning and cooling off with beaks open. 💙💚

@@Cosmogirl014 It's a smart way to kill parasites. Sauna can have a similar effect on humans. I'm definitely familiar with the beak opening. I remember the various chicks my parents raised doing that when my brother and I were children.
