    I agree with everything you've said. Though I have some slight disagreement with the idea of it being simpler for Altair just destroying the world with her god-like power. She certainly wanted to destroy the world, but it seemed to me that she wanted to use the creator's own world as the means of its own destruction. She wanted the existence of creations themselves in the real world to be the death nail. For her to just go around and destroy everything seemed like a catharsis and she wasn't looking for catharsis. She wanted the creator's world to receive her message about how their cruelty had snuffed out a life (Setsuna). She wanted that irony of the creator's creations destroying the world of creation.
    That said, I think because the show had poor pacing and poor exposition dumps, all of this could have been made more clear. I personally like the approach of shows like Fate/Zero where there is more talking than fighting so that part didn't bother me. Though Fate/Zero had more meaningful talking than Recreators. Overall, I share most of the same views as this video. I really did love this show. It wasn't a masterpiece or perfect in any way, but it was so refreshing and fun.

      I fail to see how the exposition dumps were poorly handled , they made the narrative more coherent and were inserted in places where they make sense.

      There´s also the fact that the laws of the world would banish the thing/individual causing the problems (that was also part of the reason she needed a war, she couldn´t just start the problems herself because she would be the one banished and if that happen she wouldn´t be able to avenge Setsuna. This can be seen in the parking lot fight).
      So she decided to start a war in the real world between the creations to mess up the laws of physics enough to make the world reset/destroy itself. This was also the reason why the creators created the fictional city that they called "the bird cage" (that was a exact replica of the city where the final fight was supposed to take place in an attempt to "trick" Altair and make her think that it was the real city and make the creations be able to fight againts her without worrying about the effects in the real world). Altair obviously saw through this because she knew that they needed acceptance of the public to make the creations stronger and accept a story where they win the fight againts her. So she made the public root for her instead of the heroes and accept a story where she achieves her objective. That was the fatal flaw of the bird cage (Altair could realize about it and use it againts them).
      and like you said, to make the creator's world receive her message about how their cruelty had snuffed out Setsuna´s life and the irony of the creator's creations destroying the world of creation.

    • @SnakebitSTI
      @SnakebitSTI 4 роки тому +8

      I think there is an important reason for the plot not to be about Altair trying to destroy the world directly. Altair isn't simply trying to destroy the world; she's trying to murder-suicide the world. Altair doesn't want to "win" so much as she wants to take the world down with her, and causing the multiverse to collapse in on itself would accomplish that. I view Altair as a tragic character, considering she was created like that.

    • @DarkFrozenDepths
      @DarkFrozenDepths 2 роки тому

      It's simpler to think that she was trying to cause a paradox that would destroy everything. But that same paradox can try to fix itself, which would mean erasing her own existence without erasing everything else if done wrong.
      And it's not like she could just rampage since that same paradox would simply just "delete" her cause she used her powers too much.

    The weird thing is, I kinda wish it had been much longer, so that they could have figured their plot out. As it stands, they never told us how Altair appeared in our world in the first place. They never defined her abilities well either, even if she had infinite power, they could have at least researched the powers that did exist and, alternatively, since she was a character who gained her strength because different people wrote/drew her, write some of your own stories for her but give her major weaknesses to counterbalance her ass-pulls.

      Yeah. In my mind, this thing needed to be like, 3 seasons long and really _really_ did some deep development of the characters. There's just so many tantalizing chances to take full advantage of who and what the villain is (for example), that it's a crying shame that it was left on the cutting room floor. The last two or three episodes of the show gave the audience a piece of the villain that was just wonderful and good, and should have been developed through numerous episodes so at the very end, it's even more of a feel-good thing than it ended up being.

      I don't have a problem with the setup, but it went from "let's spend 6 months figuring out how to beat Altair" to "okay we have our plan." I wish we had some slice of life maybe, not quite like Date a Live but similar, so that we could spend that time with them. It didn't have to be all action since the battles weren't the focus of the pace anyway.

    Actually, they explain why the villain just can't go ham on the world. But the convolutedness of the story is why that explanation gets overlooked. The reasoning as to why they "just can't immediately end everything" is also convoluted.

    >pure conjecture
    >restoration power
    We saw the restoration power in Episode 10. Altair's physical image was tearing apart at the seams and Selesia gained new power through high acceptance levels, which lends credence to Meteora's conjecture about the world ending if they're not careful. I think leaving this up to the reader's imagination is probably for the best.

    • @GrexEleven
      @GrexEleven  7 років тому +15

      We may see it afterward, but that doesn't change the fact that at the time (around Episode 4) Meteora pulls her theories completely out of thin air.

    • @arnargrande1889
      @arnargrande1889 7 років тому +8

      Point taken. But I'm looking over Episode 4 again, and she goes over how they look like real human beings rather than polygons or pixels (as the world's way of making things make sense), which is her basis for the world's restoration power. She just says afterwards that she doesn't think that the world merging with other "story worlds" has no negative effects. I think at that point it just remains a possibility and a guess. So at least the restoration power isn't pulled out of thin air.
      Maybe my interpretation is wrong, but what I envisioned is that there'd be no turning back after a certain point. If that is the case, there may not be any negative effects visible before it's too late. I think honestly, the story is told in this way, to leave a ton of things up to the reader's imagination, rather than saying concretely "the Earth is going to explode" or something. I think in that way, the show is meant more for people with vivid imaginations who consider all possibilities (aka people with anxiety) rather than people who need concrete proof. I mean, if there's a 50% chance the world will end, I think that's a good enough reason to try to prevent it.

    The unusual number of episodes (22 instead of 24 or 26) and the presence of a clip episode makes me wonder if there were concerns or changes to the budget that effected production and thus pacing. They didn't want to risk a drop in visual quality which could kill online enthusiasm so they made fast alterations to dialogue and episode pacing.

But not all characters needed a flashback, the magical girl and Meteriola (spelled wrong) didn't require one.

    Im late to the party, but i have just a thought that might be giving the anime too much credit: What if the reason why the creators having lengthy, static and drawn-out dialogue is because it's trying to depict reality as a more uneventful and mundane experience?(like how the local government approached the creations calmly with diplomacy contrary to how we stereotype governments in fiction as trigger-happy warmongers) And why the motives and goals of the creations are so convoluted is because they're literally anime characters who don't think or act like what we conventionally think of as good writing or realistic actions? It is possible that this anime's creators thought that deep into the concepts of fiction and reality and the contrast between the two, making the creators boring but rational like real people, and the creations over-the-top and verbose like anime characters.
    But I'm just reaching, though it's still possible they were that smart.

    There are 2 things that are bad about Re:Creators:
    1. There is a huge amount of detail in the show, which is great, but it also hurts the show when the details are suddenly missing or, even worse, there are mistakes in these details.
    2. Souta is a huge problem. And i don't just mean the character itself (he is the typical insert character with a little more personality than the likes of Kirito, but still paper thin), but the role he plays in the story. He is the deus ex machina that gives the story problems to throw at the cast and does so for 'i can swallow that' to 'incredible stupid' reasons. I think the show could have been a lot better if they cut him out after the start, because every little thing he comes in contact with in this show loses value. If you don't believe me, watch the few episodes without any presence of him and you will understand.
    I will probably write a proper review later on MAL but i still have the last 2 episodes too watch (saved for a rainy day), so it will take me some time to do so.

      while i do agree souta was rather flat at the start, i highly disagree after his character arc in the second half of the show. he exhibits traits of generic protagonists, yes, but there is so much more to him beyond that! spoilers and all so i wont go into detail for the other people reading the comments but to me, he very much felt like a real person with flaws and strengths, rather than a cardboard cutout.

    • @zomfgroflmao1337
      @zomfgroflmao1337 7 років тому +1

      As i said, i don't think he is as bad as other characters of the same mold, but there are problems surrounding his implementation that go above him just being a 'meh' character. At the finale for example (no spoilers) there is no real reason for him to even be involved in the whole scheme at all. He is no author or artist, he has no skill required for him to be there and the only reasons he gets to be there is, that he met with 2 creations as the first human and that he has a (rather flimsy) connection with the main antagonist. Both of those are bad excuses if you take the weight and scale of the operation (and how tight the whole thing is run) into account.
      That is only one of the examples that his presence alone disturbs the flow of the show. It is not the character itself but how he doesn't really fit or is pressed into a role that doesn't fit for him.

    • @svenhent
      @svenhent 7 років тому

      guess that's just issue with how the studio portrayed Sota. Quoting Hiroe's actual concept on Sota in an interview, "It's said that what happened was thanks to Sota, even if he's not the hero." Well, original storyboard doesn't necessary gets fully used so I guess the way the studio adapted that part didn't click with everyone

    • @zomfgroflmao1337
      @zomfgroflmao1337 7 років тому +2

      Two things don't add up for that explanation:
      1. You could argue that they tried to hard to fit Souta into the mold that he was the 'hero' that saved the day, even though it made sense in only one aspect while 95% of the time it was putting the round piece into the star shaped hole.
      2. What annyoed me the most is the fact that this show is an anime original, but for whatever reason they still retained problems that usually come from adapting material from a source (the in this video mentioned long dialogue heavy exposition scenes as another example). So they don't really have an out why they fucked that up.

    • @alter946
      @alter946 7 років тому +1

      My opinion on Sota is very similar to the thoughts presented in this thread. I found him very bland from the start and thought the story could progress just fine without his character involvement. I gave him several passes because I do think that he acts like a realistic 16 year old, with valid insecurities and such. And at the beginning, Sota lampshades his role as a "narrator" and that this story is meant to be "her" story. (I'm guessing the "her" is meant to be Setsuna.) It was the scene with him taking a picture of Selesia's billboard in the rain and he was supposedly monologuing in his head to his... brother? (Who was never shown or mentioned in the story, anyways... moving on.)
      My biggest gripe with Sota's character... it felt like the writers were trying to give him shoes that were too big for him to fill. Your statement of trying to fit a round piece into a star shaped hole really describes what I feel about his character in a nutshell. He did have a story arc of guilt and moving on... but I think I would've appreciated his character a lot more if the writers gave him a personality overhaul and boldly gave him the narrator role. Like a normal kid who got caught up in this mess and now he's narrating the events to the audience with some snarky side commentary. (Sort of like that recap episode that I was tempted to skip, but I ended up watching it through for Meteora's commentary.)

    Amazing video, dude! Somebody HAD to eventually make this video. However, I think the bad is kinda harder to overlook, considering what they had, it used the fact that the characters were fictional too much as an excuse for clichés in the narrative being that the only character to actually evolve in an interesting way is Mamika and that the WHOLE story is purely based on wild speculation.
    If you consume the story as a nice and cheezy message about producing art packaged in a generic but passable battle-shounen anime, it works. However, as you mentioned, it could've been something much greater and it only needed to be reworked in some areas.
    P.S. Spoilers:
    Having the bad guy literally be the manifestation of an angsty teen that uses the power of memes/pop-culture made it too on the nose the route that the story will take...kinda shallow.

    Ironically you fall exactly into the shows commentary with your review: audiences don't like extra details, talking, etc so Animes tend to have very simple or superficially covered aspects all over the place because Anime fans CLAIM they want a fully fleshed out well developed world while not wanting the actual development that goes into that. So the "best" animes create thing superficial illusions of a world in most areas and concentrate on 2 maybe 3 standout aspects like action, character growth, or story. In a certain sense this only drives home the writing of the anime that much more as you've essentially directly validated what they said. Especially since you did indeed say it paid off the buildup yet STILL complained about the work that went into that. You expect levels of execution beyond what they had time for or what they could justify having the characters expressed even as you complain about how much time they spent on building what they had. And this is why the information density of anime worlds are much more shallow than the real world. Because that doesn't sell anime to fans.

    Re:Creators is one of the best anime and the most underrated anime in my opinion. People criticizes it cuz its lack of actions scenes and the tons of expositions. However, in this case I think the exposition scenes were both necessary and interesting. This is not an action anime, this is a story about creations, creators and the audience (including the interactions among them), and if you don't understand that, then the series is not probably for you.
    Plotholes? This series may not be perfect, but many people is complaining about a lot of plotholes, and when I read what are those plotholes I realize that they simply didn't understand the story (mostly because they didn't pay attention to the exposition). The dialogue is unnecessary?, let me tell you that you are wrong, for example when Meteora came up with the theory that since they already met their "Gods"... that would mean asking their God to simply add ? Any notes on your novel/manga/video game that makes them have more powers and abilities? And the decisions these heroes make when they are in their God's world. Do they do it of their own free will or do they do it because of the author's predetermined personality and background, which influences him to make such a decision? How many of them were influenced not only by their Creators? And there are many more points that are covered in the series that are important to the plot but I am not going to explain more than what I am already doing. Those are good talking points. But because the majority of anime's audience are teenagers and children who have short attention spans, they are discarded. Because normally children don't find philosophy interesting. They just want to see flashy, explosive fight scenes. This will continue until they grow up and have the mental capacity to appreciate them much later, that is if they haven't lost their innocence and abandoned their anime hobby due to "adult life".
    On the other hand, I saw some people angry cuz the ending but its like yall dont get the point of the story and how they planned to "defeat" her. Altair defeated with the power of love? This is the part most of the people (including some of those who loves the anime) fails to comprehend. Altair was not defeated, but bribed. What was the goal of Altair? Destroying the world? No, that was the consequence for her not being able to achieve her goal. Altair's goal was to be with Setsuna, period. She clearly said it in episode 21. Her rampage was nothing, but the way in which she decided to release her frustration and anger because she couldn't be with her creator. Therefore, when Sota allowed her to be with Setsuna, the logical path was for Altair to abandon her rampage and focus in Setsuna instead. If she would have rejected Setsuna, then Altair's character would have lost all her identity. She even said in episode 21 that no matter if that Setsuna was real or not, she just simply couldn't harm her.
    Now, knowing this, at the end, Sota just gave her what she wanted and she went away. The main heroes ended up negotiating with a terrorist they could not defeat, and I just loved that because it is hardly seen in anime these days.

    i agree with pacing being off but i don't agree with what you pointed at wrt pacing and monologuing/exposition.
    monologuing/exposition did not feel as dragged out as the typical shounen title and as my other comment, the pacing problems i had was with the great battle arc.
    The great battle felt too rushed. They could clearly create awesome battles but the great battle was either of 3 things: 1) Altair too strong, everyone dead; 2) whatever happens is over in 1 hit; 3) anything outside of the previous 2 are happening in the background and thus the audience doesn't really have to care for it

    Great review on the series! I agree, I think Re-Creators was one of those shows that that had such great potential, but could have gone about in different ways. I personally think that it would have been a better show if it was twice as long episode wise, or hour long episodes to really draw out the action and over all plotting. They could have at minimum, sprinkled parts of the character's shows and backstories within the narrative itself. Mainly since I left the series really wanting to watch some of their original shows (I'm looking at you Blitz and Yuya). But truthfully, they should have taken an "Marvel Cinematic Universe" style with the entire series. They should have had either OVAs or specials of each of the shows/games created with each of them ending with the introduction of Altair to bring up hype for something bigger on the horizon.

    0:50 Like Digimon, just with humans instead of "monsters" and a broader spectrum of origins.
    11:30 Mhhh, I don't entirely agree with this. The ending is (next to this: 11:40-13:00) the show's greatest flaw.
    Don't get me wrong, I still think the show is good, but I just can't help but feel like the final 3 episodes were rushed.
    Episode 20 was already somewhat lackluster in terms of believability, but 21 just shattered the immersion, because the events felt extremely forced.
    This is how I would have ended the show:
    *Spoilers ahead:*
    Altair falling for Sota's copy of Yuna/Setsuna is nonsense. Altair knew Setsuna was dead, she would have rejected the recreation and maybe even attacked her.
    If anything, then the Altair I got to know would have seen this as an act of disrespect towards her dead creator.
    Sirius should have been foreshadowed earlier, maybe at the very start with Sota's drawing book. Instead of a cat girl drawing (episode 2), a drawing of Sirius is being hinted at - a drawing of Sirius given to Sota by Setsuna at the event.
    Then Sirius gets more screen time, with some character development and one or two episodes are dedicated to the other characters helping Sota create her in the image that Setsuna had in mind for her.
    The final battle is then Sirius vs Altair.
    I would prefer an ending where Altair is still around at the end and still mourning for Setsuna, but where the others were able to ease her pain and let her accept the world, despite its occasional cruelty. How that would be done, well, I think I would have to demand payment before spending that much time on it.

    The show has very obvious flaws and we can't ignore them... But we can forgive these flaws... Personally I don't consider the much slower middle part as one since I really really love the slow tension building.
    Personally i found a lot of similarities between RE: Creators and Mirai Nikki, mostly because both of them are shows with very obvious strengths and flaws so they are very controversial animes in every community. But RE: Creators managed to do something that Mirai Nikki couldn't... RE: Creators managed to play so well to it's strenghts that it made me forgive all of it's flaws. And all of a sudden I can't name any other show which was able to do the same, for me at least.
    When I recommend RE: Creators to someone I always say "Even though the show has big flaws, somehow it's still a masterpiece. Watch it and I hope you'll understand what I mean".

    the giant battle arc of the anime felt like they could have dragged it on for longer to flesh out the fights as well as flesh out each character and their interactions. it felt like everything suffocated.. and then the end was a bit too abrupt as well.
    i think they should have cut the show before the hotsprings breather episode.
    release the hotsprings episode as OVA
    then have more episodes for the giant battle arc as a full season or more.

    "Difficult to appreciate" is a great way to describe this show. RE:Creators is defiantly a spin on the Fate series if you took their work and put an isekai hat on it. Though unlike RE:Creators, Fate has built an entire franchise on that style of dialogue and writing so they pretty much go hand in hand. I felt like the show played it too safe in emulating that aspect instead of writing something more in line of what they were trying to build up. It just seemed a but uninspired and cliche when everything else in the show seemed to go that extra mile.
    Overall it's a step in the right direction for the Anime scene, plus it's got one of the freshest spins on a recap episode I ever seen.

    I thought I'd find a review for this show, but I'm glad to hear your assessment of 'Smartphone', too, & maybe it wasn't worth more of your time. I can't 2nd that. BUT.... (SPOILER COMING):. There wasn't anything 'SMART' about the series, (minus the phone). It 'ticked me off' that it CHANGED GENRES the last couple of shows before the end!
    Maybe I'm 'symbolism starved', from the meager offerings this year. (Kado:...' was a SMART, fascinating journey into not only Sci-Fi, but just 'SCI'. Something to brag about for the year. But, 'Smartphone' started out, a fairly 'formula' (described genre) PLOT = 'guy dies early, god can bring him back, but not to his old life'. Guy asks to bring phone for God's mistake... & sent into a 'feudal-times', parallel universe. He adds more badass warriors to his party as time goes on; the first girl declaring him to be her fiancé. Then, 2-3 eps from the end, the usual training, battles, action- PERIOD, etc. STOPS. Then, 2-3 eps right before the END, the girls start cat-fighting over the guy, going from an 'action-adventure genre' show, to a HAREM show. No more battles & action OR comedy, really! The badass warrior/women bicker about seeing one girl who asks, gets a kiss. 'He kissed YOU... I want a kiss, too!' Now they all 'want one'! No more feudal plot-dilemmas... & the girls agree to 'share' him. A bickering 'henhouse' (& I'M a 'hen', too, but I didn't want to see warriors giving up their dignity with BOOB COMPARISONS & FIGHTING OVER ONE GUY... and that's how we left the ending. (Set up for a 2nd Season). But felt like my times was wasted & took a 180 on the genre. Unnecessary & STUPID. Now, EVERYONE (except the phone, again) are stupid & lacking a shred of dignity! Nothing like investing A LOT of hours on something I later considered: 'false advertising'. :(

      You might find that reading the LN helps. Smartphone is a rare example of an isekai story that doesn't just take the MC, drop him in a forest right next to a carriage containing a noble girl, and consider that "job done". Basically, Season 1 is just the setup for the actual plot to start, and although you do see the very first traces of it here, it is mostly just glossed over because the characters don't know it is the main plot yet.
      Personally, I think the whole thing would have better without the harem stuff, but it turns out that if you want to sell stuff, you have to be selling what people want to buy, and people want to buy harem stuff

      I thought the 1st half of 'Smartphone'=OK, then it turned into a cat-fight, abandoning the character-depth/battles/training/powers & became a bunch of girls all wanting 'a piece' of the main character, not caring they had to share him; THAT was OK, when the story was actually interesting UP 'TIL THAT point. The last 4eps, seemed rushed, shallow... ('Silver Guardian' is maybe a less shallow vers. airing NOW, (ONE guy trying to find & save the game-creator's (granddaughter, I think?). -S.2's started & I've wanted to binge it). Plus, there's a variety of other characters (villains & allies) various genders/personalities/ages. Even 'Re:Zero' was compelling (& 1 other girl went after the hero, & her merch is a HOT seller); there was a lot more THOUGHT to that plot (& the endings were pretty gruesome on occasion), but there WAS depth & variation to that story. There are reverse harems (-can't say as I mind) but they CAN BE equally as brainless. I don't mind this in-a-game/game-comes-to-you genre (not rly an SAO fan), but I usually give most anything a shot & stop if it's not my cup of tea. I don't know WHY I stayed w/'Smartphone' (invested a lot of time, maybe? Or it HAD PROMISE before the last eps), but I wish I had the last 4 episodes of my life back. I AM more inclined to the Hellsings, Black Lagoon, Bungo Stray Dogs, Juuni Taisen even Touken Ranbu, & Black Butler types. 'Mononoke' (& the show it came from) are my FAVORITE- (art AND depth). Maybe 'Smartphone' I stayed too long, I know & talk to more & more female-fans & we ALL like something different. I'm glad there's as many genres now, as there are TASTES.

      Once the actual plot gets going, the harem stuff will fade into the background a lot more. It does actually serve a limited purpose however, as it will be providing the political base for what's coming, and it did kinda need to be established. It just could have been done with a party forming on grounds other than who wants to boff the MC, but I can't really blame LN authors for wanting to sell stuff, and harems sell books, and get you anime deals, so there's that.

      Hahaha! Agreed! Not sure how well they sell=not in that demo. **wink!**, but some genres don't 'turn my crank' like others (I'm a SUCKER for 'Black Butler' manga/movies/merch). I think it's 'Diabolik Lovers', that was 'sposed to be rev-harem, but I couldn't make it to season2. Even tho' the 'guys were cute' (kinda past THAT being my motivation), the girl wasn't acknowledged having any merit or worthy of even talking to, just there for the guys to 'feed on'=like a milk-cow=(NOT a strong female role model). 'Smartphone's' crowd of once strong, female 'warriors' reduced to MUSH=arguing abt who gets a kiss (then ALL aren't jealous, like 'Sister Wives'). Even at 17, I wouldn't have the attn span for it. In the end, another guy-char.'s there (so it's got to cont.) & was a bit promising, then I found 'Juuni Taisen', reinforcing I'm not into most harem/rev. harems, which 'drop-you-into-an-alt.-reality genre' thrives on. 'Silver Guardian's more 'genuine'=emotional depth, (we'll see=I'm binging tomorrow). Even 'Yuri' was good; not QUITE a 'BL' but at least based a 1/1 'ship'. This 'year' (winter-winter) has been kind of 'DRY'. There WERE real highlights: 'Kado', 'Zodiac Wars', ('Drifters'=last winter?), 'MMO Junkie'=SORT-OF game-genre w/humor & script=good. I 'spose, like loving 'Darling in the Franxxx' even if I'm not too keen on Gundam-type shows. What are YOU watching now, do you find as a GOOD recommend? I AM digging 'Magus' Bride' (& liked 'Kino'- but those almost fit over a FEW genres). Guess I'm more suited to Seinen/Shounens for the ART. Anime IS the best source for well-drawn anatomy-action. It blows my mind the mangaka HAS TO put their story to art!

    Grex, I love your videos! I always leave them feeling like I have a deep, fundamental understanding of what the anime creators meant to portray through their works, and your analysis is not only spot-on, but also eloquent, entertaining, and thoughtful. So many Anime UA-camrs focus on memes and goofy humor and surface-level critiques to get by, and that's all fine and good, but your videos take it a level deeper. They're entertaining, but they also leave me thinking on story elements that I wouldn't have otherwise considered, and I really, really love that.
    Anyway, keep up the great work! You are an absolute breath of fresh air.

      It’s comments like these that provide some much-needed motivation when there’s little to be found elsewhere. Thank you very much.
