  • This stunning 700-square-foot, self-built float home is fully off-grid with solar power, a pellet stove, a composting toilet, and an evaporation grey water system that ensures nothing is dumped overboard! It has an open concept kitchen, living and dining space, a master bedroom and bathroom on the main floor, two bedrooms on the second floor, and the wraparound deck up top gives 360 degree views. Take a full tour of this sustainable tiny floating house!
You can follow Jay Blackmore and see more photos from his DIY float home build here:
    / floatinthekoots
Jay built it in his spare time (between working, spending time with his kids, and sailing) over the course of 4 years as an alternative housing option to the country home he had before, which he felt was too expensive, too far from town, and too much maintenance. Now he doesn't have a lawn to mow or a driveway to shovel, and he is walking distance to all the amenities in town and just a few steps from his sailboat that is docked in the same marina.
It's not an easy lifestyle though, everything that goes in and out of the float home has to be carried there, including propane tanks, pellets for the woodstove, groceries, garbage, etc. even in the middle of winter when docks are icy and the wind is blowing. And it's quite public with boaters and paddlers going by all day. But Jay says it's all about mindset and he's okay with these smaller challenges since it allows him a lifestyle that suits him perfectly.

How does he clear out composting toilet.. considering he has to discard the waste somewhere..

The amount of engineering, fire science, biological science, and physical science knowledge that this man contains in his head is astounding. That combined with his financial acumen and practical applications of all the basic principals of each knowledge area is more impressive than the home. Of course...he needed all of that knowledge to build the home on his own.

Ain’t that the truth. I never actually got to a point where I felt I even enjoyed being a homeowner on my wages. There was always far more worry than their was enjoyment or personal satisfaction in the equation as long as everything concerning ownership boiled down to cold hard cash. For those of us who know they will always have to scratch out a meager existence this offers a little bit of hope or at least a possibility of some hope if necessary. Maybe not this specific build but downsizing and tiny space living in general. That’s how I stumbled upon the video. Seems to be more about a simpler life style in general. Or more manageable without sacrificing some enjoyment.

First time watching this video and I think you have created an amazing literal house boat. As you were describing your home you’ve built, it kept showing what an intelligent, well motivated, skilled architect, and seems like you have the finances to use all the best products to cover your comfort, safety, and being able to get homeowners insurance combines to near genius level. And you seem like one incredible person and father. I hope this house remains everything you set your goals for what you made this amazing floating structure. Best wishes.

It cool to see the propane lights. I grew up with a cottage in the Pontiac (just past the Gatineau, (Danford/Kazubazua) and we didn’t have electricity until the late 70’s... so we had propane to cook, run the fridge, and lights. Miss those simple days.
