@@DirtyGeorge check out "Boom to the moon", Someguy2000's mods (Bounties 1-3, Inheritance, etc.), Autumn Leaves and any other quest mod that is still loved by the Fallout fans even after all this time. These mods are as good or even better than the original game. And yes, Someguy's writing is pretty cheesy sometimes, but he never failed to get his message across, his stories are pretty lore friendly, and most importantly they are entertaining.
The mod was pretty good besides the weird crap that one guy made. I wouldn’t let a UA-camr sway my perspective of a mod since they probably just play NV for the main quest and don’t touch it for a good 3-5 years.

Here is the issue with this drama. The rest of the dev's can play stupid to it all they want, but there is no way in fucking hell that they didn't know. Arrogant individuals need people to believe they're good, while good men know themselves well enough that they don't need to convince anyone. In this case, Ray Chase worked pro bono for a bunch of literal-whos on a passion project that might never have even seen the light of day for a game over a decade old, and his only request was that they give his character sunglasses. He could have stolen the spotlight all for himself like other celebrities getting involved in projects, he could have asked for half the development budget to pay for his credentials. No one could really fault him if he did. If. Ray Chase is one of the good ones, I think.

The vehicle part surprised me in many ways for one If it was in the main game imagine the time I could have saved venturing the Mojave and 2 drivable salvaged tanks or even small aircrafts the endgame would be legendary blowing up death-claws and all your enemies with HE shells and ordinances just magical.
Yeah, the mechanics added in the ncr quest are fantastic. Wish the guy who did the ncr quest line would cut those mechanics into separate mods, but I doubt they would.
Fortunately this is what is said on every video I have seen. I think the people who did the awesome technical stuff aren't sullied so much personally. The ire is directly purely at the people who deserve it.

Honestly that's the thing that kills me out of all of this. It's a game that's primed to having a major focus on the story and narrative, the big shining star even people that don't care for it will put on the game. And they decided to take the modern shooter approach of making the mission setpieces speak for them moreso. Like come on here. And the worst part is, taking a few keys from lore would have made things probably a little better. Key one being that Operation Sunburst memory, where instead of that dumb 'shoot the wounded' they could have followed Oliver's actual plan of human waves. Still shitty, still incompetent, doesn't involve stupid twirling of mustaches and needing so much 'hey these guys are so goddamn fucked' in the intro.

I was the - former - lead music guy for the mod, I quit about 6 months before realese after having no real direction from the lead dev, other than "make fallout sounding music". Requested a copy of the script for mood/pacing purposes, which is par for the course when working on professional film/video game composition and got nothing (I can see why they didn't give it to me now lmao). The devs were clearly computer/fallout nerds with great technical understanding of programming, but they had no clue how to write and didn't want to get actual writers on the team. The only person who ever contacted me or the other composer about the music for the mod and seemed at least somewhat concerned with it was tgypsy.

The other music guy, a mate of mine, was working on more bluegrass style stuff- all originally meant to be played on the radio stations. I don't even think radio stations were in the mod in the end.

The Voice actor that leaked information didn't leak anything, the voice actor in question was a youtuber named TKS-Mantis, he had issues with the mods lizard people and voiced his opinion of it, but some of the devs didn't like him talking shit about their project, so they labeled him as a leaker, the information TKS "leaked" was information from The Frontiers own website.

Wild Wasteland is a trait you can pick at the start of New Vegas which changes some events and outcomes to have more silly tones. For a base game example, outside of goodsprings on the side of the road to Primm, you will find a skeleton with a certain hat inside a fridge which is a reference to Indiana Jones, stuff like that.

Monty python, star treck and things of that nature. It was all over and a lot of people including devs had a problem with it. Some silly things are cyber dogs playing poker, a skeleton in a fridge as a Indiana Jones reference, a Monty python reference, ROES. Most of those things are in the game but replace to not be so waky without the trair.

A note about that, the creepiest thing about the Deathclaw encounter IMO is the dialogue box you get when you first come across it. This is exactly what was written. "The creature before you languidly lashes it's... Her? Tongue in the air, tasting your scent. The Deathclaw's wandering eyes convey all you need to know. You are looking at an entity of pure lust." Also, one of the responses is, "I'm a sick f***, I like a quick f***." Sorry, but that was never written with the intention of being funny, wacky, goofy, whatever. That's someone's weird ass fetish. 5. Sex with a weird, lizard and snake-like creature with wings? Totally fine with Wild Wasteland. Thing is, this one actually had the potential to be funny. Having these weird looking things be addicted to chems was funny IMO. Then it went too far with the option to have sex with Juno and having the breeder there.
I still thinks there’s way too much in the mod’s story. Fallout can be a Horror, Sci-fi, Comedy, Parody, Drama, Action Adventure game, but not all at once. The entire Space Questline goes from horror to action to sci-fi to horror again to parody and then back to drama. In base Fallout, each quest sticks to a single theme, a horror questline stays as a horror questline, a dramatic questline stays a dramatic questline. It’s the player choice in what path they want to take the Story in, and yet Frontier is way to linear to actually allow player choice. Not to mention Wild Wasteland is misused completely by Frontier, in base NV it’s just little references, some neat items and maybe a character. In Frontier they use it almost every single chance they get, and it’s always a weird reference that most of the time feels like a Borderlands style pop culture reference. There’s even lines that aren’t even Wild Wasteland but are still an option (The Force line in the space quest).
Yes, I agree that it tried to to be too many things. This view might be controversial, but they should have just focused all the teams effort on the linear NCR campaign and stuck with the war simulation theme. It was clearly the focus of their vision. They also showed a clear lack of understanding for tone. Tbh, all the controversy in the writing is to execution. We had slavery of minors in Fallout 3 and 4. We had wacky sci fi stuff in Mothership Zeta or Old World Blues. Hell, the theme of the Cook Cook storyline and the two slavers in Westside was more disturbing a theme than any theme in the Frontier. The difference is in the way these themes are portrayed. New Vegas in particular always kept a respectful distance between your actions and those gruesome themes. You could never help Cook Cook. You could only bring him to justice. The Frontiers immature writing clearly showed a lack of experience and understanding how incorporate dark themes without being disrespectful to it. This paired with it trying to be everything at once and it thus lacking in a consistent tone or overarching theme was the main reason for its downfall in terms of Story.
The scripted events and unavoidable "capture" scenarios are the part that kills the main story for me. it just feels railroaded to force events that shouldn't have happened. Gives me flashbacks to the nonsensical vault ambush in fallout 3

The guy only said some light criticism about how those lizard people just don't fit in Fallouts lore and the dev team immediately jumped down his throat and banned him from the discord. I also agree that they don't make sense lore wise as its just " yeah were lizard people. Thats it. We also like human sex." It just felt lazy and fetishistic.
Sadly, even the technical wizards on the team, like Xilandro jumped on the witchhunt for Mantis. Which shows that the issue of the mod isn't just a few bad apples in the story department.

Even a year later, Frontier is still such a fascinating mess. That Zu guy gets blamed hard for being a sicko but honestly, paying attention at all reveals that every single member of this dev team is a strange, shocking mixture of incompetent and creepy. The deathclaw scene, the lizard/snake people, America, Mae, having sex on a sleeping bag in a public meeting space, the prostitutes' dialogue...this entire mod is just a showcase of technical expertise, horrible writing, and laughably awful shoehorned-in fetish fuel. And then ALL the devs turned on each other. What a glorious trainwreck.
The thing that has always blown my mind is that whole "playing as the Enclave is such a stupid fascist power fantasy" from TGSpy and some other frontier dev (not sure who, the one who added "fascist" in that smug tone). The story's dim-bulb nature from the very beginning is what stuns me. Remove whatever passed for depth in _New Vegas,_ which depended on portraying the NCR as a flawed democracy. Replace it with a 14-year-old's idea of a military tough guy. Prevent the player from killing most NPCs... then they die anyway.

The America “joke” concerning the speech check is a great idea that would make the player aware of how little they pay attention but the execution of said “joke” was absolutely terrible. The first interpretation the majority of people have is “uh oh I just bullied the dev’s waifu” rather than “Haha you got me! Jesus I should read more, haha” as intended.
Should have been like one of my teachers used to do back in elementary school. They'd ask for a volunteer and every hand would shoot up thinking we'd get out of class for a bit, then they'd say, "to go clean the toilets". Should have been something like that where you get a simple quest making fun of you for picking the speech check without paying attention.

Taking everything into account, it's clear to me that Zutheskunk was nothing more than the fall guy that everyone else used to sink from a sinking ship. You're going to tell me a bunch of people are going to bring an artist on board and not a single one of them even does a single web search to see his portfolio of work? Yeah, no. People just want to cut ties with this burning tire fire of a mod project. My suggestion is to make a note of everyone else who worked on this mod and refuse to work with them. Someone who is willing to push you in front of a speeding bus to slow it down so they can get on and leave you to twist in the wind is not someone I could ever trust on any level for any reason.
Yeah I find it super hard to believe that guy who draws furry art is hired to do art for mod, and literally nobody goes to look at his portfolio for a sample of his skill before deciding "Yeah this is the artist we need." Looking at the deathclaw thing specifically I feel like it was a joke aimed at all the deathclaw pornography that's out there. It didn't hit well no but I wish the mod team took more responsibility for it. Honestly I think the team let the "We're the biggest fallout mod" get to their heads and it shows. It also seems the mod was poorly managed really and needed a more tough love lead who did his best to make everything cohesive. Honestly I feel another group of people should take control of this mod and make a revamped version, get some of the old artists and VAs get some better writers on the team and keep the original framework. Make it what it was meant to be.

As the fallout miami dev put, cutting the guy out doesn't cover the fact the rest of the devs were complicit in this stuff, and yeah, a lot of the more dubious writing wasn't even his.
So basically, this is the ultimate demonstration of why Creative Directors exist, and why good project management is actually more important than talent most of the time.
you need a creative director and a producer to keep that director in check so they don't fuck up everything by thinking they can do whatever the fuck they feel like doing, speaking from experience
Interpretation of humor and sarcasm is a good example of this. If I take them at good faith (a stretch but stay with me) then it's easily possible that the lines written as sarcasm and dark humor which fail to carry don't get picked up on. Causing much of the backlash. A good QA will pick up on the lines being awkward, communicate it to the producer who will instruct necessary action to either change the content to make interpretation clear or have the questionable content cut. It's just not reliable doing QA on your own project, you're blind to alternative interpretation of your content.
I clicked on this expecting the regular youtube content grab of drama fallout but received an honest attempt at reporting of what happened and to make your own judgements. I'm very happy to have listened to this insight of the development and I don't think I can hate the developers for putting in a lot of time and work and try to make something great, even with results as they are. Thank you for making this video Rimmy and being as objective as you could.
In due fact, the report of the mod leader leaving the project and giving the right to the remaining devs to do what they want, and them wanting to remove the problematic aspects and remaking the NCR makes me want to see this mod be successful in the future.

It's very apparent they're using Wild Wasteland as a cover just as much as they're using zu as a scapegoat. If I had to guess, one of the things Spy mentions WAS actually meant to be Wild Wasteland (I'd put my money on the Deathclaw scene personally, since it does seem more self-aware than the others) and they realized it wasn't tagged correctly, then realized it's a perfect excuse for a bunch of these poor and uncomfortable decisions. Like c'mon, at some point you gotta come up with a better lie.

In fantasy a sex slave serves its master, while in reality the slaver pases women and men around to make his own money through their servitude with no pay for example. I personally had fun with this mod. Scandal and controversies aside. Writing isn't perfect but it made a serviceable story. Stolen story ideas and presentations happens all over anyway. It worked. It was hard, but it worked. Some dream segments needed curving. I actually liked the dark horror segment, but didn't quite like some other sequence parts.
@@KingsNJenssons Personally I blame the fact that there seemed to be no real direction and that team members were holding what they were working on hostage. I agree that they are allowed to be criticized for their work and that this wasn't exactly the most polished piece of entertainment, but the fact that many of its creators were volunteers, and that this was ultimately a passion project shouldn't be forgotten either. We have seen billion-dollar game companies fuck up game launches before. Fallout 76 was the main reason that this mod was so hyped up in the first place. The idea that a small group of freelance developers could give us even a little bit of that fallout charm back was enticing, and it was what ultimately led us here. I'm not going to defend the story and I'm not going to defend the questionable content put into it, but I am going to defend the fact that people are allowed to fail. This wasn't a company trying to screw over gamers, this was a group of people who wanted to create something amazing for fallout new vegas and got lost along the way. I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I will always be impressed by the commitment shown in its creation, the technical achievement exhibited, and the Fallout Fandom for being a community where something like this could happen.

Yeah, that's not how that works though. If he was literally just QA testing and bug testing, there is a very good chance he'd never see most of the weird shit, especially since he was probably using some sort of dev mode to skip half the actual dialogue. It's very possible to miss all this if you don't make it specifically. These projects are massive, and most devs don't even touch the parts they're not involved with.

I recorded dialogue for a fairly large character in this years ago. It got cut, and neither me *not the casting director* had any idea until after the release and I tried to get VA credit. Why? Because that entire quest line was added back when the project had a different lead (Devilswish, presumably) and when he was gone and the team had a new director, they didn't know how to get the quest working. I feel like a shitload of problems with the mod boil down to there being *awful* communication between various team members.
That and maybe some burnout: I've heard that when you're exhausted and just want to be done, what seems like a good idea can actually turn out to be a bad one later.
TKs-Mantis was the VA who "leaked" content. All he did was call out the non-lore friendly content that was specified on the very public VA forms, specifically the lizard sex slaves. He called out the devs for their lack of attention to the Fallout lore and theme but was constantly harassed by the dev team of this mod through Discord raids, Twitter raids, etc. I really hope you read this comment and you watch his video on this mod and how he was involved. Many of the developers on this team did not care for Fallout New Vegas as they stopped playing years ago, have never bothered to research any bit of Fallout's lore, or straight up didn't know what Fallout's theme was.
Hardly all he did, he was trying to suck positivity away from the mod for his own petty reasons, and his lore takes are puritanical. Devs where sloppy sure. But negativity is the only thing that gets views apparently

The mod I’ve played is still 90% pretty incredible and should be encouraged. But the publicity this mod got people to dig and try to destroy it. The backlash isn’t proportional. Scandal, censorship and controversy is the only way people know how to interact with anything and it makes me think why anyone should ever make anything free for people like this again. Who gives a shit about the lizards? Fallout has aliens and mutants. They’re not inherently lore unfriendly, and why are you trying to be a gatekeeper for lore anyway? Patch them out or something. Enslaving people in an apocalyptic RPG also shouldn’t be weird sex or no. Nobody respects the craft it took to construct this and would rather destroy a weak foundation to feel good about themselves. So much about the mod is great even if those are dealbreakers for some. Writing can be updated and improved. The devs clearly couldn’t deal with criticism and weren’t very self aware and that’s on them, but TK Mantis was very negative about the mod and from the perspective of his own subjective gatekeeping lore views shortly before its release. It wasn’t balanced with anything good at all, just pettiness, did you watch it? He had personal beef with the devs and couldn’t get a voice role. He’s a narcissist that would rather stir a pot when he sees vulnerability for views than be constructive about a group of people creating Fallout stuff, don’t act like he’s being objective. Again, negativity and scandal is the only way people can engage, and things that are mostly amazing and awesome get destroyed for some rough edges right at release that can get buffed out. But people again would rather destroy something than take the time for that. It’s not right.

I think Alchestbreach mentioned this when he was allowed to showcase some of the trailer and weapons in one of his regular show cases back in the day, that the Frontier would supposedly take place after hoover dam. This would work better, in my opinion, for the non-canon and lack of lore friendly option.

I'm only updating on things I'm certain of/have evidence of, my Twitter & Discord DMs are open if you have some form of evidence to send along as there were lots of claims I saw in the comments with no actual evidence. Interesting if true but I'm not about to publish a claim without more proof. So in no particular order: The screenshots of Phobos? It saddens me that I have to say this again, but yes, the "gas the gamers" & "age of consent" screenshots are utterly fake. When I first saw them I went to the discord to investigate and found the actual original comments (by using the surrounding comments to locate them). No, they weren't edited by Phobos after the fact - this would have left an (edited) tag, and additionally in the second fake screenshot the comment that 'Phobos' is apparently replying to was also photoshopped. There's no way Phobos could have edited that comment he was replying to because that wasn't posted by him. TK Mantis? Many have asked why I didn't bring up TK Mantis specifically or talk more about him. I didn't bring him up for the same reason I didn't bring up other drama (or the discord mods/admins banning people) - if it wasn't directly related to the production of the mod or the outcome, it wasn't relevant to the video. TK Mantis and the Frontier team just hate each other. It doesn't have anything to do with how the mod turned out save for a voice actor being recast some time ago. I didn't look into it further because once I had a first look over it I realised it was basically just a drama match between the two sides with no actual relevant outcome were I to spend the time required to look into it. In regards to referring to him as a leaker, that was what I was told multiple times when I asked about the VA work on the project - that after the TK Mantis situation, VAs were segmented away from the mod to prevent leaks. This is on me, however, as since I didn't look further into the situation I should have made it clear that this was what the devs said - use a direct quote instead of my own voice. More information on Mae? I had someone contact me to explain the character of Mae and her family further. They are a reference to both Night in the Woods (the video game) and Catcher in the Rye. I can't believe I didn't catch this myself, but the MC of NITW is called Mae, and her friend is Gregg (spelt the same in the mod & in the game), along with Candy being Mae's mother. Additionally Mae's last name is Caufield, while the MC of Catcher in the Rye is called Holden Caulfield. EDIT: As a commenter below suggested, it could instead be named after Max Caulfield from Life is Strange, especially considering she has a friend called Chloe. It's just mish-mash references all the way down. Mae's character in NITW, however, is not underage, does not constantly reference sex nor draw porn. I do see the connection between the joke of a Tumblr artist and NITW as that game was well liked by that crowd, but the character still stands out as incredibly uncomfortable. The creation of the Deathclaw scene? A direct quote from an insider: "I was in the room when the Deathclaw quest was storyboarded. The belief at the time was that there wasn't enough comedy or Wild Wasteland triggers in the mod. The people in the room at the time were Phobos, Outlander, tgspy and Rikku." I've been informed by two different people now that the Deathclaw scene was originally asked to be made by tgspy, with Phobos writing it and finally Rikku implementing it. I am waiting on a screencap to be sent to me to confirm this as best I can, but my own quote above supports it. EDIT: Can now confirm as I have received that screen cap. It was definitely set up as a joke according to both the insider and Rikku, and including what I mentioned in the video it was also meant to play the Deathclaw idle animation. The Deathclaw idle animation is the Deathclaw cleaning all of the claws on its hand with a single claw from the opposite hand. This looks like the Deathclaw is doing the "finger-through-a-circle" suggestive hand gesture. Rikku further stated that since it was never finished it was intended to be cut, and simply never was. Can't handle dark topics/political correctness? This is all going to be opinion here, basically just repeating what I said on my livestreams. I'll be the first to say I love dark & fucked up topics in media - I've got a dark tooth, perhaps. I've seen many people mention that you can't put dark things into games anymore without people complaining. There are definitely some people and even some devs (including a writer who left because of this) who disagree with some of the content in the mod, including sex slaves being present in the mod at all (as in the slaves in the Legion base, not even referencing AJ or America.) Personally though, and I feel many will agree with this, it's in the delivery and context of the scene. It's not like you cannot write a story that involves slaves, manipulation, rape, underage characters who aren't mindwiped to the idea of sex or even, god-forbid, some lizards that want to bone you. The problem is the way these are combined and portrayed. If the whole mod was wild and whacky (convinently, there's even a perk for "this stuff is wild and whacky") the Lizards would not have felt particularly out of place. Had the NCR's MQ been focused on being serious, the AJ segments wouldn't have been such a whiplash. Had the game been rather serious, America would have been quite the interesting character. An opportunity to be truly evil by exploiting someone's weakness and driving them to be dependent on you as opposed to the normal "bad options" in games which amounts to "give me your money or I stab you." But having this combo'd with the incredibly suspicious birthday card, the feet line and the rest of the hornier elements in the mod and it starts to leave the territory of a serious look at a broken person into enslaving your cute OC. None of this will make a story well written, mind you, but I don't think a writer is a bad person for writing poorly. People need to learn how to write and you learn by failing. Any good dark, edgy piece of content ever written was probably proceeded by ten failed dark-AU Sonic the Hedgehog fan fics. I do think the problem arises when they fail to realise that shoving sudden dark twists and serious topics into a story that contains whacky and ridiculous shit without the skill to somehow combine them leaves people horrified. As I always say, limitations make the best stories. I often say that in response to story settings, but in this case it's in reference to genre. The mod really needed to decide what it wanted to be, because it felt like it was trying to be everything, and I truly mean everything. absolutely What is Sneed? Wouldn't you like to know, fedboi. Fucking this. Golden fucking comment. Summarizes almost every other opinion in the comment section perfectly. Everyone seems to be in agreement on this except Rimmy who very obviously enjoyed talking to these people, they sounded friendly enough, and thus chose to take their word at face value. But that's all we have, their word, which directly contradicts everything we see in the mod itself.
The description of the Enclave as "a fascist paramilitary organization" is a literal quote from the character Arcade Gannon in the base game, it's pretty obviously meant as a reference to him.

Like having a speech check where a success is bad, that seems funny in concept and would maybe make a decent joke on its own, but just throwing it into a mod where it pops up out of nowhere (not to mention as part of an absolutely cringeworthy dialogue exchange) it doesn't work. Same goes for the weird deathclaw fetishism as that appears to have been a reference to the non-canon Fallout games, but the majority of people wouldn't know that.
As a mod developer and team lead myself, it really seems to me that the critical issue with the Frontier, based on what's been said and shown here, is that tgspy did not have a firm hand on the reins. Letting folks run free is fine for a modding *scene* (say, the FNV modding community as a whole) but not for a specific project. Gotta have some driving vision and focused goal for specific projects, without those, mods flounder and struggle which is what we've seen from the Frontier. The in-fighting inside the team probably wasn't helpful and the lack of a clear "I am in command" authority to cut through and resolve those disputes clearly hurt things. It's unfortunate to hear about these troubles, the Frontier could have been something great. Hopefully, the individual modders have learned from this experience going forward and can bring that experience to their next projects.
To be honest i feel like that's just an excuse though. If my lead programmer stopped following my direction COMPLETELY, and refused advice from the fucking lead designer, I'd fire him on the spot without even thinking twice, even if it nukes half my project. After all, it's not like they had commitments for a release date. What's the point of having a lead programmer working on his own game, how does that help your vision as a designer? Sure, there are people stupid enough to do this, but coupled with him blaming literally everyone but himself? Sounds like bullshit to me. That's the entire job of a team lead. A good lead would rein him in, any average lead would fire him, but it'd take a massive moron tie your entire project to someone who doesn't care about the vision. I'm guessing there was no real vision, that's why they let him do what he wanted. Sorry if I sound harsh, I detest weak leads.
As I heard, one of the main developers was a really talented scripter and programmer, and he held all his technical work hostage and demanded to be the sole writer for the NCR campaign. The leads went on with it and the developer transformed the NCR campaign into that CoD/MGS/Wolfenstein/Spec Ops The Line horrible mashup. Also, that's why the 3 main campaigns are so different in tone between each other. This is why a strong leadership makes difference.
If tgspy had done what a project lead should have done, the mod would have died on the branch without being released years ago. Which is probably why most big amateur projects like this end up going that exact way. I honestly do not understand why devilswish had anything to do with this project in the first place. If he wanted to work on his own thing with no one else bothering him and with as little interaction with the rest of the team as possible, why did he not just do his own project?

I actually kinda liked the "CoD/MGS/Wolfenstein/Spec Ops The Line" thing (having never played a single one of these games btw), though I did have to get around some CTDs in the (technically brilliant) action sequences. And you would have gotten much of that uneven experience if you downloaded three different large quest mods in the same world space, so that's fine. Anyone expecting this to be a smooth and polished experience like New Vegas or Fallout 3 (lol) was delusional. But what is unforgivable is creating content that hampers other's stuff in the same mod, or doing something similar (like say, obstinately using assets that will get the mod banned) and not taking critique or QA of your work is just damn stupid.

@@DirtyGeorge check out "Boom to the moon", Someguy2000's mods (Bounties 1-3, Inheritance, etc.), Autumn Leaves and any other quest mod that is still loved by the Fallout fans even after all this time. These mods are as good or even better than the original game.
And yes, Someguy's writing is pretty cheesy sometimes, but he never failed to get his message across, his stories are pretty lore friendly, and most importantly they are entertaining.
I feel sorry for all the guys and galls who went into the project with good intentions :/
The mod was pretty good besides the weird crap that one guy made. I wouldn’t let a UA-camr sway my perspective of a mod since they probably just play NV for the main quest and don’t touch it for a good 3-5 years.
It’s quite unfortunate, but they shot themselves in the foot multiple times. Hopefully those that had nothing to do with the “questionable” content will find work in the future.

The vehicle part surprised me in many ways for one If it was in the main game imagine the time I could have saved venturing the Mojave and 2 drivable salvaged tanks or even small aircrafts the endgame would be legendary blowing up death-claws and all your enemies with HE shells and ordinances just magical.

Honestly that's the thing that kills me out of all of this. It's a game that's primed to having a major focus on the story and narrative, the big shining star even people that don't care for it will put on the game. And they decided to take the modern shooter approach of making the mission setpieces speak for them moreso. Like come on here. And the worst part is, taking a few keys from lore would have made things probably a little better. Key one being that Operation Sunburst memory, where instead of that dumb 'shoot the wounded' they could have followed Oliver's actual plan of human waves. Still shitty, still incompetent, doesn't involve stupid twirling of mustaches and needing so much 'hey these guys are so goddamn fucked' in the intro.

I was the - former - lead music guy for the mod, I quit about 6 months before realese after having no real direction from the lead dev, other than "make fallout sounding music". Requested a copy of the script for mood/pacing purposes, which is par for the course when working on professional film/video game composition and got nothing (I can see why they didn't give it to me now lmao). The devs were clearly computer/fallout nerds with great technical understanding of programming, but they had no clue how to write and didn't want to get actual writers on the team. The only person who ever contacted me or the other composer about the music for the mod and seemed at least somewhat concerned with it was tgypsy.

The Voice actor that leaked information didn't leak anything, the voice actor in question was a youtuber named TKS-Mantis, he had issues with the mods lizard people and voiced his opinion of it, but some of the devs didn't like him talking shit about their project, so they labeled him as a leaker, the information TKS "leaked" was information from The Frontiers own website.

Wild Wasteland is a trait you can pick at the start of New Vegas which changes some events and outcomes to have more silly tones. For a base game example, outside of goodsprings on the side of the road to Primm, you will find a skeleton with a certain hat inside a fridge which is a reference to Indiana Jones, stuff like that.

Some silly things are cyber dogs playing poker, a skeleton in a fridge as a Indiana Jones reference, a Monty python reference, ROES. Most of those things are in the game but replace to not be so waky without the trair.

You are looking at an entity of pure lust." Also, one of the responses is, "I'm a sick f***, I like a quick f***." Sorry, but that was never written with the intention of being funny, wacky, goofy, whatever. That's someone's weird ass fetish.
5. Sex with a weird, lizard and snake-like creature with wings? Totally fine with Wild Wasteland. Thing is, this one actually had the potential to be funny. Having these weird looking things be addicted to chems was funny IMO. Then it went too far with the option to have sex with Juno and having the breeder there.

I still thinks there’s way too much in the mod’s story. Fallout can be a Horror, Sci-fi, Comedy, Parody, Drama, Action Adventure game, but not all at once. The entire Space Questline goes from horror to action to sci-fi to horror again to parody and then back to drama. In base Fallout, each quest sticks to a single theme, a horror questline stays as a horror questline, a dramatic questline stays a dramatic questline. It’s the player choice in what path they want to take the Story in, and yet Frontier is way to linear to actually allow player choice.
Not to mention Wild Wasteland is misused completely by Frontier, in base NV it’s just little references, some neat items and maybe a character. In Frontier they use it almost every single chance they get, and it’s always a weird reference that most of the time feels like a Borderlands style pop culture reference. There’s even lines that aren’t even Wild Wasteland but are still an option (The Force line in the space quest).
The visual style is also just waaaaaay off in so many places.
Yes, I agree that it tried to to be too many things. This view might be controversial, but they should have just focused all the teams effort on the linear NCR campaign and stuck with the war simulation theme. It was clearly the focus of their vision.
They also showed a clear lack of understanding for tone. Tbh, all the controversy in the writing is to execution. We had slavery of minors in Fallout 3 and 4. We had wacky sci fi stuff in Mothership Zeta or Old World Blues. Hell, the theme of the Cook Cook storyline and the two slavers in Westside was more disturbing a theme than any theme in the Frontier.
The difference is in the way these themes are portrayed. New Vegas in particular always kept a respectful distance between your actions and those gruesome themes. You could never help Cook Cook. You could only bring him to justice.
The Frontiers immature writing clearly showed a lack of experience and understanding how incorporate dark themes without being disrespectful to it.
This paired with it trying to be everything at once and it thus lacking in a consistent tone or overarching theme was the main reason for its downfall in terms of Story.
The scripted events and unavoidable "capture" scenarios are the part that kills the main story for me. it just feels railroaded to force events that shouldn't have happened. Gives me flashbacks to the nonsensical vault ambush in fallout 3

Even a year later, Frontier is still such a fascinating mess. That Zu guy gets blamed hard for being a sicko but honestly, paying attention at all reveals that every single member of this dev team is a strange, shocking mixture of incompetent and creepy. The deathclaw scene, the lizard/snake people, America, Mae, having sex on a sleeping bag in a public meeting space, the prostitutes' dialogue...this entire mod is just a showcase of technical expertise, horrible writing, and laughably awful shoehorned-in fetish fuel. And then ALL the devs turned on each other.

The thing that has always blown my mind is that whole "playing as the Enclave is such a stupid fascist power fantasy" from TGSpy and some other frontier dev (not sure who, the one who added "fascist" in that smug tone). The story's dim-bulb nature from the very beginning is what stuns me. Remove whatever passed for depth in _New Vegas,_ which depended on portraying the NCR as a flawed democracy. Replace it with a 14-year-old's idea of a military tough guy. Prevent the player from killing most NPCs... then they die anyway.

Looking at the deathclaw thing specifically I feel like it was a joke aimed at all the deathclaw pornography that's out there. It also seems the mod was poorly managed really and needed a more tough love lead who did his best to make everything cohesive. Honestly I feel another group of people should take control of this mod and make a revamped version, get some of the old artists and VAs get some better writers on the team and keep the original framework. A good QA will pick up on the lines being awkward, communicate it to the producer who will instruct necessary action to either change the content to make interpretation clear or have the questionable content cut.

I mean tbf the shit that's happen is all fair the mod became a shitshow and the Devs fucked up it's a real shame as the mod is also a technical marvel but that doesn't save it or excuse it from the fucked up parts
I personally had fun with this mod. Scandal and controversies aside. Writing isn't perfect but it made a serviceable story. Stolen story ideas and presentations happens all over anyway. It worked. It was hard, but it worked. Some dream segments needed curving. I actually liked the dark horror segment, but didn't quite like some other sequence parts.

I agree that they are allowed to be criticized for their work and that this wasn't exactly the most polished piece of entertainment, but the fact that many of its creators were volunteers, and that this was ultimately a passion project shouldn't be forgotten either.
We have seen billion-dollar game companies fuck up game launches before. Fallout 76 was the main reason that this mod was so hyped up in the first place. The idea that a small group of freelance developers could give us even a little bit of that fallout charm back was enticing, and it was what ultimately led us here.
I'm not going to defend the story and I'm not going to defend the questionable content put into it, but I am going to defend the fact that people are allowed to fail. This wasn't a company trying to screw over gamers, this was a group of people who wanted to create something amazing for fallout new vegas and got lost along the way.
I wasn't expecting a miracle, but I will always be impressed by the commitment shown in its creation, the technical achievement exhibited, and the Fallout Fandom for being a community where something like this could happen.
I don't have any sympathy for the lead devs. Up until a few days ago they were still talking mad shit at anyone who dared criticize them and acting like pretentious fucks. Now they've had their bullshit kicked out from under them, and I say good riddance.

Yeah, that's not how that works though. If he was literally just QA testing and bug testing, there is a very good chance he'd never see most of the weird shit, especially since he was probably using some sort of dev mode to skip half the actual dialogue. It's very possible to miss all this if you don't make it specifically. These projects are massive, and most devs don't even touch the parts they're not involved with.

Honestly it seems to a lot of team members were assholes or creeps, this includes Tgspy, Xilandro, and Phobos. Shame such a project had to crash and burn and I do feel bad for the people who did purely voice acting or technical stuff.

I recorded dialogue for a fairly large character in this years ago. It got cut, and neither me *not the casting director* had any idea until after the release and I tried to get VA credit. Why? Because that entire quest line was added back when the project had a different lead (Devilswish, presumably) and when he was gone and the team had a new director, they didn't know how to get the quest working.
I feel like a shitload of problems with the mod boil down to there being *awful* communication between various team members.
That and maybe some burnout: I've heard that when you're exhausted and just want to be done, what seems like a good idea can actually turn out to be a bad one later.
If true, that may explain why there was a lot of accusations being thrown around.
TKs-Mantis was the VA who "leaked" content. All he did was call out the non-lore friendly content that was specified on the very public VA forms, specifically the lizard sex slaves. He called out the devs for their lack of attention to the Fallout lore and theme but was constantly harassed by the dev team of this mod through Discord raids, Twitter raids, etc. I really hope you read this comment and you watch his video on this mod and how he was involved.
Many of the developers on this team did not care for Fallout New Vegas as they stopped playing years ago, have never bothered to research any bit of Fallout's lore, or straight up didn't know what Fallout's theme was.
Hardly all he did, he was trying to suck positivity away from the mod for his own petty reasons, and his lore takes are puritanical. Devs where sloppy sure. But negativity is the only thing that gets views apparently

The mod claims to be lore friendly, yet has reptilian sex slaves and a ridiculous NCR storyline that has no coherency. The unnecessary sexual tension in a lot of the dialogue seems very off putting, and incredibly unrealistic in the way that it gets portrayed.

Yes the NCR storyline is bizarre, and some weird stuff got shipped with it, not so much weirder than OG FO if you ask me but w/e. The devs didn’t exactly cover their asses well sure. The mod I’ve played is still 90% pretty incredible and should be encouraged. But the publicity this mod got people to dig and try to destroy it. The backlash isn’t proportional. Scandal, censorship and controversy is the only way people know how to interact with anything and it makes me think why anyone should ever make anything free for people like this again. Who gives a shit about the lizards? Fallout has aliens and mutants. They’re not inherently lore unfriendly, and why are you trying to be a gatekeeper for lore anyway? Patch them out or something. Enslaving people in an apocalyptic RPG also shouldn’t be weird sex or no. Nobody respects the craft it took to construct this and would rather destroy a weak foundation to feel good about themselves. So much about the mod is great even if those are dealbreakers for some. Writing can be updated and improved. No, everyone salivating over this just wants to see something burn and feel superior, and fuck the great thankless work most of these people did. It takes courage to create not criticize and destroy. The duck has TK built? Fart sniffing puritanical lore videos. The devs clearly couldn’t deal with criticism and weren’t very self aware and that’s on them, but TK Mantis was very negative about the mod and from the perspective of his own subjective gatekeeping lore views shortly before its release. It wasn’t balanced with anything good at all, just pettiness, did you watch it? He had personal beef with the devs and couldn’t get a voice role. He’s a narcissist that would rather stir a pot when he sees vulnerability for views than be constructive about a group of people creating Fallout stuff, don’t act like he’s being objective. Again, negativity and scandal is the only way people can engage, and things that are mostly amazing and awesome get destroyed for some rough edges right at release that can get buffed out. But people again would rather destroy something than take the time for that. It’s not right.

The screenshots of Phobos?
It saddens me that I have to say this again, but yes, the "gas the gamers" & "age of consent" screenshots are utterly fake. When I first saw them I went to the discord to investigate and found the actual original comments (by using the surrounding comments to locate them). No, they weren't edited by Phobos after the fact - this would have left an (edited) tag, and additionally in the second fake screenshot the comment that 'Phobos' is apparently replying to was also photoshopped. There's no way Phobos could have edited that comment he was replying to because that wasn't posted by him.
TK Mantis?
Many have asked why I didn't bring up TK Mantis specifically or talk more about him. I didn't bring him up for the same reason I didn't bring up other drama (or the discord mods/admins banning people) - if it wasn't directly related to the production of the mod or the outcome, it wasn't relevant to the video. TK Mantis and the Frontier team just hate each other. It doesn't have anything to do with how the mod turned out save for a voice actor being recast some time ago. I didn't look into it further because once I had a first look over it I realised it was basically just a drama match between the two sides with no actual relevant outcome were I to spend the time required to look into it. In regards to referring to him as a leaker, that was what I was told multiple times when I asked about the VA work on the project - that after the TK Mantis situation, VAs were segmented away from the mod to prevent leaks. This is on me, however, as since I didn't look further into the situation I should have made it clear that this was what the devs said - use a direct quote instead of my own voice.
More information on Mae?
I had someone contact me to explain the character of Mae and her family further. They are a reference to both Night in the Woods (the video game) and Catcher in the Rye. I can't believe I didn't catch this myself, but the MC of NITW is called Mae, and her friend is Gregg (spelt the same in the mod & in the game), along with Candy being Mae's mother. Additionally Mae's last name is Caufield, while the MC of Catcher in the Rye is called Holden Caulfield. EDIT: As a commenter below suggested, it could instead be named after Max Caulfield from Life is Strange, especially considering she has a friend called Chloe. It's just mish-mash references all the way down.
Mae's character in NITW, however, is not underage, does not constantly reference sex nor draw porn. I do see the connection between the joke of a Tumblr artist and NITW as that game was well liked by that crowd, but the character still stands out as incredibly uncomfortable.
The creation of the Deathclaw scene?
A direct quote from an insider: "I was in the room when the Deathclaw quest was storyboarded. The belief at the time was that there wasn't enough comedy or Wild Wasteland triggers in the mod. The people in the room at the time were Phobos, Outlander, tgspy and Rikku."
I've been informed by two different people now that the Deathclaw scene was originally asked to be made by tgspy, with Phobos writing it and finally Rikku implementing it. I am waiting on a screencap to be sent to me to confirm this as best I can, but my own quote above supports it. EDIT: Can now confirm as I have received that screen cap.
It was definitely set up as a joke according to both the insider and Rikku, and including what I mentioned in the video it was also meant to play the Deathclaw idle animation. The Deathclaw idle animation is the Deathclaw cleaning all of the claws on its hand with a single claw from the opposite hand. This looks like the Deathclaw is doing the "finger-through-a-circle" suggestive hand gesture.
Rikku further stated that since it was never finished it was intended to be cut, and simply never was.
Can't handle dark topics/political correctness?
This is all going to be opinion here, basically just repeating what I said on my livestreams. I'll be the first to say I love dark & fucked up topics in media - I've got a dark tooth, perhaps. I've seen many people mention that you can't put dark things into games anymore without people complaining. There are definitely some people and even some devs (including a writer who left because of this) who disagree with some of the content in the mod, including sex slaves being present in the mod at all (as in the slaves in the Legion base, not even referencing AJ or America.)
Personally though, and I feel many will agree with this, it's in the delivery and context of the scene. It's not like you cannot write a story that involves slaves, manipulation, rape, underage characters who aren't mindwiped to the idea of sex or even, god-forbid, some lizards that want to bone you.
The problem is the way these are combined and portrayed. If the whole mod was wild and whacky (convinently, there's even a perk for "this stuff is wild and whacky") the Lizards would not have felt particularly out of place. Had the NCR's MQ been focused on being serious, the AJ segments wouldn't have been such a whiplash.
Had the game been rather serious, America would have been quite the interesting character. An opportunity to be truly evil by exploiting someone's weakness and driving them to be dependent on you as opposed to the normal "bad options" in games which amounts to "give me your money or I stab you." But having this combo'd with the incredibly suspicious birthday card, the feet line and the rest of the hornier elements in the mod and it starts to leave the territory of a serious look at a broken person into enslaving your cute OC.
None of this will make a story well written, mind you, but I don't think a writer is a bad person for writing poorly. People need to learn how to write and you learn by failing. Any good dark, edgy piece of content ever written was probably proceeded by ten failed dark-AU Sonic the Hedgehog fan fics. I do think the problem arises when they fail to realise that shoving sudden dark twists and serious topics into a story that contains whacky and ridiculous shit without the skill to somehow combine them leaves people horrified. As I always say, limitations make the best stories. I often say that in response to story settings, but in this case it's in reference to genre. The mod really needed to decide what it wanted to be, because it felt like it was trying to be everything, and I truly mean everything.

I'll take Things That I Definitely Don't Fucking Believe for 300, Alex. Sorry, Rimmy, but a lot of these claims have nothing to back them up except dev claims. And what did have evidence was extremely shaky at best.

The only thing that's weird to me is the Enclave stuff. Yeah, it's a weird encounter, but the fascist line is mostly right? They were literally made to exaggerate the use of actual real fascists in the US in the 1950s and 60s? The most egregious thing in that line is calling them a paramilitary when they are more in line with a rouge state.

Everyone seems to be in agreement on this except Rimmy who very obviously enjoyed talking to these people, they sounded friendly enough, and thus chose to take their word at face value. But that's all we have, their word, which directly contradicts everything we see in the mod itself.
The description of the Enclave as "a fascist paramilitary organization" is a literal quote from the character Arcade Gannon in the base game, it's pretty obviously meant as a reference to him.

For example, that shit makes sense for Arcade to say. He actually grew up in the Enclave as a gay man.
@@GeorgePerakis Yeah, so much of it feels like in-jokes that just don't hit home on a broader audience. Like having a speech check where a success is bad, that seems funny in concept and would maybe make a decent joke on its own, but just throwing it into a mod where it pops up out of nowhere (not to mention as part of an absolutely cringeworthy dialogue exchange) it doesn't work. Same goes for the weird deathclaw fetishism as that appears to have been a reference to the non-canon Fallout games, but the majority of people wouldn't know that.
What thing about the legion?
As a mod developer and team lead myself, it really seems to me that the critical issue with the Frontier, based on what's been said and shown here, is that tgspy did not have a firm hand on the reins. Letting folks run free is fine for a modding *scene* (say, the FNV modding community as a whole) but not for a specific project. Gotta have some driving vision and focused goal for specific projects, without those, mods flounder and struggle which is what we've seen from the Frontier. The in-fighting inside the team probably wasn't helpful and the lack of a clear "I am in command" authority to cut through and resolve those disputes clearly hurt things. It's unfortunate to hear about these troubles, the Frontier could have been something great. Hopefully, the individual modders have learned from this experience going forward and can bring that experience to their next projects.
To be honest i feel like that's just an excuse though. If my lead programmer stopped following my direction COMPLETELY, and refused advice from the fucking lead designer, I'd fire him on the spot without even thinking twice, even if it nukes half my project. After all, it's not like they had commitments for a release date. What's the point of having a lead programmer working on his own game, how does that help your vision as a designer? Sure, there are people stupid enough to do this, but coupled with him blaming literally everyone but himself? Sounds like bullshit to me. That's the entire job of a team lead. A good lead would rein him in, any average lead would fire him, but it'd take a massive moron tie your entire project to someone who doesn't care about the vision. I'm guessing there was no real vision, that's why they let him do what he wanted. Sorry if I sound harsh, I detest weak leads.
As I heard, one of the main developers was a really talented scripter and programmer, and he held all his technical work hostage and demanded to be the sole writer for the NCR campaign. The leads went on with it and the developer transformed the NCR campaign into that CoD/MGS/Wolfenstein/Spec Ops The Line horrible mashup. Also, that's why the 3 main campaigns are so different in tone between each other.
This is why a strong leadership makes difference.
If tgspy had done what a project lead should have done, the mod would have died on the branch without being released years ago. Which is probably why most big amateur projects like this end up going that exact way.
I honestly do not understand why devilswish had anything to do with this project in the first place. If he wanted to work on his own thing with no one else bothering him and with as little interaction with the rest of the team as possible, why did he not just do his own project?
@@amadeusagripino6862 I don't even mind the differences in tone. After all the NCR, Legion, and Crusaders are very different. I actually kinda liked the "CoD/MGS/Wolfenstein/Spec Ops The Line" thing (having never played a single one of these games btw), though I did have to get around some CTDs in the (technically brilliant) action sequences. And you would have gotten much of that uneven experience if you downloaded three different large quest mods in the same world space, so that's fine. Anyone expecting this to be a smooth and polished experience like New Vegas or Fallout 3 (lol) was delusional. But what is unforgivable is creating content that hampers other's stuff in the same mod, or doing something similar (like say, obstinately using assets that will get the mod banned) and not taking critique or QA of your work is just damn stupid.
