- Steve Jackson and his company Steve Jackson Games have been at the heart of the tabletop industry since its earliest days. At Metagaming Concepts Jackson pioneered the micro-game, an efficient multiplayer gaming experience like OGRE that fit in a small polythene bag.
After founding his own company Jackson went on to develop classics like Car Wars, Illuminati, and GURPS - the Generic Universal Roleplaying System that could be used to simulate RPG games in any setting or style. With games like Munchkin SJ Games has remained a relevant force in the gaming market place to this day.
Steve Jackson even cross the Atlantic to work with Steve Jackson (and Ian Livingstone) to pen a few Fighting Fantasy game books.
We talk about a prestigious career in the table top industry, how he got started, some of his finest works, and where things go next.
Steve Jackson in conversation with Jordan Sorcery.

Well done for keeping this interview going, you had one of the hardest moments with a response that would like to give one word answers to open questions. I salute your courage in continuing with this because I wouldn’t have the patience that you have.
I gave up a third of the way in. Too painful.
@@marchhare22-lm9on I felt that way too but as Jordan patiently went through it I felt obliged to do so as well in solidarity with him. On the plus side he will never have to do so again, it is important to note the importance, benefits, bonuses positive positions of each interview.
One of the hardest interviews I've ever heard. Well done Jordan!
Shows how patient and caring Jordan is, too. Very respectfully handled.
This was Jordans worst interview so far, but it was not his fault at all. Jordan gives Steve extremely open questions that you can take in any direction and Steve just leaves him hanging over and over again. Cruel to the interviewer, disrespectful and annoying to listen to.
Well done for making what was clearly a more challenging interview still interesting and full of insight.
This interview was like playing GURPS.
Ouch, this was a tough interview. I felt for you. I never knew Steve Jackson was so difficult to talk with. One of those “never meet your heroes” scenarios.
You earnt your money on that one Jordan!
Jordan's back must hurt like hell from carrying that whole interview all by himself.
Yikes.. what an absolute grind. Other people who have replied feel the same.
Most people in the industry are soo enthusiastic to share their stories and their input or contribution into what has become a huge market for rpg's, boardgames and card games.
I enjoy and own way too many of his games but the apathy and reluctance to put more than a single sentence reply into your questions has me very put off on any future purchases from SJG's.
Oof, that was excruciating. Surely Steve Jackson is a pillar of nerdy games creations and his work has entertained millions of people, but he appears to be a man of few words.
Well keep it up Jordan. Your videos are doing a great job at examining the history of nerdy games.
Coming to this ep late, and what a grind! As has been said by everyone else, Jordan did well to keep the interview moving forward, even if you were dragging SJ along with you… well done! 👍
I really like this history of our gaming and games you are giving to us, Jordan. Great stuff! 🙂👍
I love GURPS but dear God this was painful to watch. Jordan you did a fantastic job. You carried the whole video. SJ didn't seem to care at all and the one-word answers were just blah. Keep up all the hard work you do Jordan!
Who clicked this and then suddenly thought 'Ah but which Steve Jackson??'
It's a test for the true tabletop gamer, knowing the difference between Steve Jackson and Steve Jackson.
@@foxbat51 And knowing which of them wrote Fighting Fantasy books!
(I stuck to Lone Wolf to avoid the confusion)
Well I saw the thumbnail
@@fredrik241 "Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone present.... by Steve Jackson" 😄
Big fan of Steve Jackson's games. I started off with Globbo of all things, and from the ads in the back of that went on to try Toon, Necromancer and Illuminati before getting into GURPS, which has given me absolute decades of amazing adventures.
That said, you carried this interview Jordan, amazing job plugging through it.
Always great seeing Steve talk. I wish there were more of these interviews!
For a man with so many ideas I expected Jackson to be a passionate, articulate and expressive individual rather than the reserved person Jordan encountered. Definitely a lot of heavy lifting by Jordan and can only imagine him falling back in his chair afterwards exhausted. Buying my Fighting Fantasy Books as a child I imagined the authors to be imaginative, exciting and effervescent gents. These interviews by Jordan show case my childhood heroes of fantasy are really just normal people.
That’s a different Steve Jackson. This one didn’t have anything to do with Fighting Fantasy.
That's the other steve jackson, who is far more fun to listen to
Hi Jordan! GURPS was my first RPG, we played it for years and years! Thanks for the video!
Edit: Never mind
Great job on this interview Jordan. Steve is clearly a man of few words, but there where still some interesting nuggets.

Very low energy interview from Mr Jackson. Good on you Jordan, for carrying on!
Nice interview. Steve has always been a thoughtful sort of chap but you can still see his humour shine though. Good job Jordan. I know it was kinda hard to know where to take things going when the guest doesn't remember it all either.
A great recovery from the Cone of Shame and keeping the momentum of the interview going 😆 Overall a decent interview, thank you. 🙂
Squeak-squeak! 🤩🐀🌠
This was quite the interview. I bet you felt it when you finished the call. Interesting conversation though.
Good interview, but it was a little gauche for Steve to drop ketamine just before the interview.
I'd never heard this guy interviewed before, and his hard-nosed idealism was fascinating to behold. As a longtime WoD sceptic, furthermore, I enjoyed the anti-cloak shade. If you're moving beyond your initial GW-based remit, I'd be interested in interviews with Tom Dowd, Paul Hume, Jeff Laubenstein, Margaret Weis and Janet Aulisio; it's a great shame you missed Carl Sargent, Joe Dever and J.H. Brennan.
Amazing work Jordilooooove!❤
Thanks for doing this. I bet you were exhausted after the interview, having to tease responses from him.
Great interview!
I'm a huge fan of G.U.R.P.S, so I had to watch this. (I try to watch all these) Now I feel j need to see an interview with Dr. Kromm himself, Sean Punch!
Oh hey! This interview has dropped. Glad I could help make this connection for you.
I wish you would have gone more into GURPS, (Also wish GURPS had a OGL.)
SJ looks like he could care less. Kind of off putting really. You pulled the interview together nonetheless.
Hope you enjoyed Birmingham!
I did!
Oh wrong Steve Jackson! Wondered who the slurring American was 😳
The _other_ Steve Jackson
Luv it J.S. ;-))
Did White Wolf take his lunch money and stick his head in the toilet? I’ve never seen someone so salty about a game that wasn’t their thing.
I bet that was hard work carrying this interview.
I love some of SJ's games, but man he's a terrible interviewee.
This guy should join the mafia
He will never spill the beans.
GURPS is still my favorite RPG System. Sadly I hardly got to play/run it in the last decade or so.
😅
