6 years later your video is still helping folk. Thanks!! I had taken it all apart, found a blockage where the drain line hooks up but had put together that piece that comes apart. All good now, draining, thanks again!!
Hello there - I know I'm late to the conversation here in 2024; however, I began experiencing some issues on my Kenmore Elite water softener that is about 12+ years old. Namely, my brine tank would not drain during the regeneration cycle. I tried replacing the electrical switch connected to the cam that rotates & the mortar on top. Neither seemed to work. Until I came onto your page - this UA-camr explains everything very well & concise (thank you). Now, I tried what he said and cleaned it all out & I put the two black plugs with the holes as @pkokkinis attested (mid way down the comments section) to via the manual. Well, I put all together in the Venturi valve and same thing - tank not draining.. However, I decided (nothing more to loose) to do the opposite as instructed by the manual. I put the .3 gpm plug in the top (red holder valve) and the .1 gpm plug in the bottom grey assembly. And what do you know - IT WORKED!!!! Who knew. Just thought I'd let everyone know. One last bit of advice - put silicone grease on the last washer before the cap is screwed on & on the two small O-rings that go inside the head unit before putting everything back. I'm draining now. Good luck.
So happy to have viewed this first! EXACTLY the answer. Every other video I looked at subsequently went through an unnecessary teardown. If you've got this problem, TRY THIS FIRST!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Doug! I cleaned the screen and thought that was it, until I saw your video. I lifted the gasket and removed the fill flow plug. Lo and behold, there was a small grain of gunk blocking the little hole. I'm hoping this did the trick. Oddly enough, my unit doesn't have the tiny screen. Perhaps a previous owner or service guy lost it. Anyway, thanks once again on this video, which saved me from calling a repairman!
Thank you for being so thorough and detailed! I almost put it back together with the two tiny flow plugs reversed or in the wrong whole..... This is "EXACTLY" the information I was searching for.... Thanks again sir.. Good Day!
I had a salt bridge and thought that was what was making the water backup and overflow. I painstakingly emptied the entire tank over several days scooping water and salt into buckets, breaking up the salt in the bottom of the tank and cleaning the entire contraption, which honestly needed to be done anyway. That said, after all that I turned it back on and the water was still not draining. Then I watched your video, cleaned out these parts, and magically it's all working again! Thanks!
The industry has only a few manufactures and the simple ones are identical inside, with the exception of the electronics & display. An electric motor turns a metal cam inside the top enclosure. The cams operate micro-switches to tell the controller where it's at. The Venturi valve is where water goes from high pressure (Line pressure) to an area of low pressure. This create a suction or vacuum. As you found out, this flushes to resin tank with brine. The parts and procedures are almost identical on many brands from KenMoore, Morton & others. Watch out for the direction of the rubber parts as numbers face up. Take a photo during each step for reference. As of late 2018, the annotations have been removed from the manufactures websites. The service people were probably yelling too loud. LoL. Good Vid!
Thanks. Just ordered the washer because my softener didn't even have the black washer. Only had the red one. Probably a good reason why it wasn't draining.
Excellent video Doug!!! I was looking over my manual and something didnt make sense then I watched your vid and it does now. Loos like I'm going to need to order a gasket Nozel vent. Let's hope that will fix the problem.
Thank you for making this video! I rinsed all the venturi siphon parts and my softener is draining properly! Btw (anyone else that has this issue) note that it took about 4 or 5 manual cycles before my tank was drained (water level was at the #6 level initially)
Good video Douglas, In the field these kenmores more often need the spider gasket in the head to be replaced, especially on older units. The rubber gets stiff or twisted, and then you lose your vacuum draw.
I had a similar issue. I had to replace the parts and clean all the salt out of the tank. I had a salt bridge that was not allowing all the water to drain. After replacing the pars and the cleaning, it would drain properly.
P.S. If you feel comfortable, remove the electronic controller and place a gallon freezer bag over it with the wires coming out at the bottom or cut a corner, then seal it there. Why? If the cap for the Venturi valve cracks, it will spray salty water all over it. Don't ask how I know this. But placing electronics in a sealed cavity with "SALT & WATER" is asking for failure. Use dielectric grease on the connectors for the wires. Micro switches can be purchased for $1 online. Dielectric grease is sold in automotive stores, home improvement and any marine shop as electrical connectors and water on a boat, requires protection. Cheap insurance.
I think you got the little black plugs reversed. According to the manual the one with the bigger opening (.3 gpm) goes to the grey assembly, letters up. The plug with the smaller opening (.1 gpm) goes to the red disc, letters up. Plus, the manual labels the bigger flow plug as HVDC, which I couldn't figure out why until I saw these letters on the flow plug in your video.

Mine is an ecowater and my red circle piece is missing that mini black plug. It has the second mini black plug, but the top one isnt there. i wonder if it was ever there?
I did this. Nothing looked clogged or overly dirty. How does the water drain out now? It's still there after doing a recharge. My outflow tube going down the drain has plenty of water flowing through it. I've been scooping it out into a bucket to empty the tank. Will it empty on its own or do I need to scoop it out again? What else could be the cause for water in the tank?
Looking at your tank sure is nice to see no water not the case in mine. I have already taken the venturi apart cleaned and even replaced the black casket along with cleaning other items nothing changes water lever stays up and increases.
Thanks for the video. I’ve followed three steps but doesn’t seem to have fixed my issue. I am noticing lime on my faucets, salt is not depleting from the softener, so cleaned the Venturi and the other parts, removed the salt from the tank, flushed with hot water and tried to regenerate. There is water flowing out of the black overflow tube and into the floor drain when regenerating. Any idea what the fix is?
Hi!, I have one Kenmore Water softner model number 625.348571/591. This unit is not working the main problem being that the brine is not pumped into the resin tank thereby the level is high in Brine tank. The regeneration process is not proceeding beyond filling after emptying the brine tank. When I manually press ON-OFF HOLD button the Switch operation takes place and the next BRINING cycle cycle light comes on and can see the CAM and Gear rotate also. But the brine is not sucked and put into the resin tank. On checking the Brine valve assembly no suction is seen or felt brine tubing end. Instead some water still comes out in Brining Mode. Suspecting the Nozzle assembly fault I opened the assembly cleaned the strainers, checked flow plugs and even changed the Gasket only at item 79 in drawing at page 30 of manual (Part No 7163663). Brine valve assembly opened and cleaned Screen (Item 42 in drawing at Page 29. Also checked the flow plug Item 57 at page 30 on drain line. On the control panel could adjust present time but could not set Sr31 instead J30 comes. How to adjust this. Also did not see k 10 on screen during start process. Based on the above I would request you to kindly let me know what actions I need to do so that my water softener starts working again.
Why does the owner manual specifically show and display that the smaller .1gpm flow.plug is part of nozzle & venturi and larger .3gpm flow plug is.in the bottom by small cone screen. This also shows that way on parts diagram. On model 625.388450. Switching big plud on top limits brine flow and harder water.
Yes I have the similar Kenmore setup and my *_out line_* leaks as well. With the bypass on I have pulled the black plastic retainer clips and replaced the *_O-Rings_* (15/16" x 1-3/16") and it still leaks. Be careful when removing the retainer clips as they are easily broken and I have done just that. I will be trying a better quality O-Ring for a proper seal.
Water tank just like yours. Have you run into an issue where the water will not suck out of the holding area and recharge the brine? My tank will fill up no problem but will not suck out. I replaced the Venturi and cleaned everything.
I had this problem for months. Make sure you have both flow plugs inside the venturi. Check to make sure your o-rings are still in place on the outside of the venturi. One of my flow plugs was missing and I didn’t realize it for months.
@@Kim-zp9kn thank you. I purchased a new Venturi and tried for weeks different things. Was costing me more time than it was worth. I just bought a new one after ten years and popped right on in 30 minutes. Thanks for your feedback.
My drain hose was cracked and leaking at the exit so all the flush cycles were putting water back into the tank. Glad it had a catch pan with a drain hole back into the tank otherwise would of had a little flood in my basement. Hose cracked after only 3 years.
Careful, low water pressure is also a sign of your softener in need of replacement. The resin gets old and swells, eventually blows out into all your house lines, clogging everything with an orange gunge.
No magic happening for me. I have changed the gasket in the venturi twice now and regened , water continues to fill up in tank. When I regenerate water does flow out overflow but I gaining water in my tank. Im trying to avoid calling repair , but maybe mine is just too old.
Thank you for sharing, I may have to replace my gasket. Although it looks intact it does have some grooves. Once I replace it and run a regeneration cycle will the water softener remove the excess water from the tank or will I have to siphon it out?
Be careful, low household pressure is a sign that your softener resin is old and swelling. The next thing that happens is the resin bed will empty out in your lines and clog up every faucet and toilet valve in your house. If it's 15 or more years old, definitely replace it.
Use a bucket and a siphon. Harbor Freight sells a siphon with 2 hoses and a bulb for a few bucks or just use a hose and a bucket. The idea is to put one end of the hose in the tank and the other end in the bucket. If using the bulb, squeeze it a couple of times to start the flow and then place the bucket below the level of the water in the tank and the water will continue to flow without squeezing the bulb.
@@pistol3333 thanks, locat d it yesterday. And ordered. It has dents in it, so hopefully it works. Water is hanging in the salt bin and brine tube. All the rest of the Venturi looks great and not dirty. We'll see. Thanks for your video.

My tank is completely full and spilling over. How do I drain it?
Use a bucket and a siphon. Harbor Freight sells a siphon with 2 hoses and a bulb for a few bucks or just use a hose and a bucket. The idea is to put one end of the hose in the tank and the other end in the bucket. If using the bulb, squeeze it a couple of times to start the flow and then place the bucket below the level of the water in the tank and the water will continue to flow without squeezing the bulb.
