Not using any knife but have wanted to get one for the last few months. I have seen the Gerber Dime in other videos and think this is what would be best for similar reasons as you, the pliers for fishing! I was unaware it is that light! Excellent presentation!

Really glad you liked it! I think I saw the Dime in a few videos before jumping in to grab it. It's been perfect for fishing! I really like the scissors option too. Makes it a great, lightweight, tool/knife to have on trail.

As a knife nerd, I love watching presentations about people thinking about what blade will match their specific needs.
In my hiking and backpacking I've landed on a spyderco salt 2. Extreme corrosion resistance and only 1.9 ounces (less if you remove the pocket clip)

I'm a total knife nerd too! I could look at knives all day. You are right! It's so important to find one that meets your needs.

If you want something robust and light i can recommend the Joker Ember (either Flat or the regular version) It is a solid knife with a good handle and a fair price. i got the Ember-F (flat grind) and even tho im a knife guy and got many to choose from i ofen take the Ember just because it weights almost nothing and is razor sharp and easy to get the edge back on again.
Thats something you probably should consider too.. if you cant sharpen a knife.. dont got for highend steels because those tend to be harder to sharpen and it hurts a lot more if you screw it up

I totally find myself collecting knives too. Good reminder about being able to sharpen the knife!

As part of my EDC, I always carry a Leatherman and a small Swiss army knife. In my bag, I also have a Cold Steel SRK that I can add to my belt. The Leatherman gets the most use, with the Swiss Army knife following. The tools on the Swiss Army knife that I mainly use are the tweezers, toothpick and scissors. The Leather man, it is mainly the plyers, knife, saw, can opener, and screw drivers.

Thanks for sharing! I really like carrying the Swiss Army knife in my pocket. I keep a Leatherman in the truck

this is coming from someone who collects pocket knives and has over 30 EDC pocket knives. on backpacking trips I always carry the classic SD. like u say the Gerber dime could be good if you specifically know u need pliers. the only time I wish I had a bigger knife than the classic SD was when we brought some summer sausage so I could slice it but the person who brought the sausage had a regular size Victorinox so it wasn't an issue. the MOST useful item is the mini scissors for cutting LEUKOTAPE. I do carry a gomboy for trips where we will be processing wood for a fire. but 9 times out of 10 all I bring is classic SD despite owning a ton of pocket knives.

I vividly remember one time when I was cutting a summer sausage with my Classic SD and thinking to myself, "This is a little small." It got the job done but would have been nice to have a longer blade on that one occasion. I'm really enjoying the Gerber Dime right now! Thanks for sharing your story with us.

@@NealBenson yup. Great video. Like u said, the perfect knife depends on the specific person and specific trip. But hopefully if anyone sees my comment it can further convince them that they need a classic SD. Unless they know specifically that they are going to be cutting sausage or fishing. Even when I’m not backpacking I always carry my classic SD. The scissors have seen more use than any other tool i carry.

@@CharlesBlank I carry the classic SD almost every day. I think you're right that the scissors are the best part. I hope others will read your comment, you have some great wisdom here! Thank you for chiming in and sharing.

I haven’t been backpacking in a good min, but a spyderco delica 4, or any of its larger family members would be an excellent choice.. they’re very lightweight n u can get them with a combo blade

Gotta be small enough for easy carry but big enough for hope-it-never-happens self-defense. My current carry is a Kershaw Misdirect flipper.

Hah, I knew before even clicking you would pick a 58m swiss army knife. It's what most hikers settle on after figuring out what they actually use on the trail.

Why did the Charupo Indians use a knife? ... To get to the other side. hahaha
