Always check REI/used. You can even pick an item you want and wait for a notification in your size and color preference. I paid $35 for a brand new REI down jacket recently through the '/used'. I couldn't be happier with the price, weight, warmth, and condition. It pairs perfectly with my TNF down vest from the thrift store that was also in new condition - and happens to be a European design called the Massif, so it's a unique vest in North America.
I love my Trekology pillow. The fact that it's such a monster thing it's actually _bigger_ than the Sea To Summit Aeros - which it was cloned from - & then retails at _half_ the price, just makes it so much sweeter. This thing is so tough I use it for a butt-pad, BTW.
Every thing you say about there being less expensive options, is true. Of all the gear I have, the biggest buying mistakes were the most expensive items. Almost all of my gear now has come from second hand stores. I have a lot of brand name items that I've paid almost nothing for compared to list prices.
Another great video on budget gear, Dan. I use some of those items myself. It is more about the journey than the gear. As long as you are getting out, the rest will come with time and experience. I also use a similar pillow. One that is way less expensive than the big name brands but just as effective. I also use budget trekking poles. Being that I break or bend mine sometimes it isn't that big of deal to replace them when I do. Take care and have a great day.
Thank you so much...for being on a very tight budget, but also enjoy getting outside and enjoying nature, your options speak to me...just great options!
Some good cheap ultralight options there. I'd add that the IMUSA Aluminum Cup is an even better option than the Ozark Trail Cup due to being even lighter weight and aluminum which heats faster than steel. My local walmart actually offers both.
Nice budget list. I love getting stuff at Costco. Got my puffy jacket there and a set of trail runners, I was surprised at how good they each worked out. Thing is, just have to keep your eyes open as the store by me does not consistently carry, the treasures tend to randomly pop up on a shelf or a table out of nowhere. God bless.
I agree. I got a lot of good gear from Costco but like you said they are only temporary. Case in point, my fleece I talked about in this video. Awesome fleece for &20. But it was quickly gone.
Hmmm, I'm thinking we could be gear twins as I have a bunch of that same stuff that works great. Here are a couple of other suggestions. I use Habit fishing shirts from Sam's club for hiking, they are about $16. Long sleeve with thumbholes, 1/4 zip and a hood. I use then from about freezing temps up into the 90s as they are super breathable and of course SPF 50. Come in different colors and patterns. I also got my puffy from Sam's. Eddie Bauer 650 fill, no hood, very light and extremely warm. It is my winter coater here in MN (I have a couple). They were $29.99 at Sam's and then they had a closeout for $15 - got several for the family. The mug you mention nests perfect with the stanley cook set, which is what I use. I picked up a couple of sit pads on ebay from China. They took a long time to get here, but they work perfect and they fold up just right as a back pad in the G4Free 40l backpack if you want to go the packable or super light approach there or are bringing it on a plane in your stuff. For day hiking, one suggestion that I have is the outdoor products Mohave fanny pack. It is a 3 or 5 l fanny pack, but the best part is that it has two water bottle holders. It comes with bike type water bottles, but 1 liter smart water bottles fit perfectly and it also has elastic lashing cord for stuff on the outside. Basically, you can hike all day with this fanny pack. They are about $10 on Walmart.com. Lots of cost effective stuff out there if you look.
I love the WalMart dry bags! I have those myself and they are very durable. Also, I have the Aegis max sleeping bag. Love love love it! I prefer that over my thermarest vesper 32 HANDS DOWN! Basically I agree with all of your awesome budget gear. I own all of it. Great minds think alike 👍🏻 This is a great video for people getting into backpacking.
I also have the Walmart bags. Lesson learned, don't put them in the dryer! I threw them in the washer, they needed a good cleaning. I forgot to pull them out of the other clothes when moving to the dryer. The inside melted it into one sheet that destroyed the water resistance when I pried them open.
You can have fun with budget items that could last a life time and longer. I made a hiking ( day hikes ) kit using a Stanley Adventure stainless pot ( Not the blue cups ) , a Olicamp stainless steel cup. The Adventure pot sits inside the cup. A Trangia burner and a cross ( X ) stand with a tin foil wind screen stored inside the Pot along with a small bottle of alcohol , a spoon and some matches. The whole outfit sits in a camouflaged ( Condor ) water bottle pouch. I attached two canteen cup pouches to the sides of the Condor pouch. One with a Nalgene canteen ( less weight then a Keith Titanium canteen ) for water and the other with dehydrated food. A complete outfit from budget items and basically bomb proof. I keep it in the vehicle so when I take a walk I have refreshments with me. Lets let me go slower and enjoy being out there a lot more and snacks are always welcome. lol.
That sounds awesome! My first cook kit was a set from Walmart that had a pan a pot and one other thing that I can’t remember. That was back before I discovered mountain house type stuff and used to cook everything, probably more than 15 years past. That baby was also bomb proof and everything nested. I should break that out and use it this winter when I cook real food. I loved that kit. Just about everything I use for car camping are budget gear and you are right. I still use the same gear I had for years. Usually the only time I replace it is if something newer that works better comes out. Almost never because it broke.
nice list. You could save even more more by getting a travel pillow for a a couple quid and cutting a small section off the bottom of a foam sleeping mat.
base layers on the cheap you cant go wrong with military surplus. You can order new or get "used" stuff still in the package. It works great and ONLY comes in awesome colors :)
I’ve been thinking about looking at military surplus for winter since a lot of there stuff is real wool. But you are right, certainly can’t go wrong with surplus.
I have the cup and love it. Foil makes a great lid if you want one. I have a coffee maker with the orange legs to set on it I got for $10 online. Practically no weight. I've found that the size is just right if you set the ring on the cup let the filter part hold the grounds in the hot water. The combo can't be beat for camp coffee. Don't leave home without it.
I got it from gsi outdoors. Its called " ultra lite java maker. I didn't get the cup. I've found that if you use the legs the coffee is weak and it tips that's why I just set It on the cup in the water. Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks, I don’t have any budget items in my pack. But I am going hiking with some friends. So I shared this video with them to get a starting place for them to purchase their gear. Thank you!
@@backpackingadventures4813. Any hiking trip in the back woods is a good one. It’s great to go back to our roots where it’s back to basics. None of the BS we call modern civilization. Just me and what I can carry and Mother Nature.
I have had very good luck with the 32 Degrees brand. Very nice. I too have a very expensive grid fleece top that taught me the same lesson. Never again. I have had good luck a thrift stores for mid-layers and Gore-tex items.
I love my 32 degrees. I wear them as my hiking base layer now. I also found a couple hiking shirts at a thrift store. I can usually find really good fleeces there as well.
Hello my friend, very nice budget gear recommendations. I actually have several of the items you show cased. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
Thanks! These were some of the ones that to me are worth it and not junk. Too many times did I get a budget alternative and was disappointed. But these make the cut.
So funny. I got a mid layer at Costco as well. It’s warm, yet super thin. I use it a lot when flying also since it’s not too warm where I’m sweating on the plane. If I get too warm, it’s so thin that I can shove it easily in my carryon. I get compliments on it all the time and people are shocked when I tell them where I bought it
I’ve been really impressed with clothes I use for backpacking from Costco. High quality and really cheap. I bought a few things for this year backpacking as well. Great place to get gear. 👍
Some good tips you got there. 😁 I got most of my gear now, but I have been thinking about buying my son a down sleepingbag for Christmas. So I'll check out yours! 😀 Have a great weekend! Kaat
You are right and I should have mentioned that. I get them when I get electronics and I keep them. I then use them in my electronics bag and sometimes in my clothes bag in the winter. They works really well at keeping your electronics working. Good pick! 👍
I went on Amazon and bought a pair of decent aluminum trekking poles around $50, my BRS stove. At my local grocery store got an aluminum 1L cup that i boil water in for less than $5. I bought some used Columbia convertible trousers for $20 from an facebook used gear group. Lots of people selling great gear cheap if you visit REI used great or online groups.
You made a great choice with the BRS stove. It’s amazing for the size and the cost. I’m switching to using that for a little while this year. Great stove. I found some good hiking clothes at my local thrift shop. There are always great deals there.
+AS THE CROW FLIES HIKING Thanks Brad! I still use most of these things in one way or another. Great items. I hope all is well with you as well. Merry Christmas!

@@backpackingadventures4813 Also the Outdoor Products Diddy bags come in a similar set as there dry bags and they are also a great value and a good way to organize your pack as they are different sizes and colors like the dry bag set and I think there slightly cheaper
I know people like frogg toggs but.....I got one for Christmas and the first time I wore it, I cozied up to a fire, not real close, just close enough to warm my hands, and it MELTED on me. I wish I had known.
Yeah, they are delicate. But I never heard of them melting but I can see it happening now that I think about it. I always worry, maybe a little paranoid, about that for my main ultralight gear as well.

The one thing i love is my bluu backpacking cooking system comes with everything and bought it for half the price of jetboil
I love 32 degrees baselayers! They had a stretchy fleece set this year that helped keep me cozy at 28 degrees.
I love their gear. I just bought a new base layer since I lost weight. I think it was on sale and I paid $10 for the tip and bottom. 👍
