5 Family Friendly things to do at Voyageurs National Park (and a bonus tip)
Our family just spent four days and three nights at Voyageurs National Park. It's a National Park that is mostly on the water. I really think you could spend two weeks there (like most National Parks) but we didn't have the time. Here are some highlights from my time and ideas for you as you plan your trip.

    Great video. Definitely helped me replace my washer water pump. Had the exact same issue, motor axle broke off from the pump impeller. Amazon had the part in stock and here the next day which tells me lots of people have this same issue. Note my wife said the washer did have an SC error code at one point.

    When I take freeze dried meals I trim as much of the excess package foil away on the bags to within a 1/4” (~ 4-5 mm) of the inner bag. Because I’m going to eat these within days self life integrity is no longer an issue. Or in some cases I transfer the food to plastic bags when I know I’m going to divide out for “stew” meals to minimize volume in the bear container. Again shelf live does not matter at this point.

      I typically take one freeze dried meal as a treat for my last night. I didn't have a bunch of homemade meals on hand or I would have used them. I recently did a video on the food I'm packing for the JMT and it's amazing how much more you can fit when you make your own meals

      I like to bring my jetboil when I take my kids out. The neoprene sleeve (or whatever it is) provides some peace of mind against burns. I’m doing the JMT next month and think I’ll bring the Jetboil stash but then bring the Fire Maple for a shorter trip in September to see how it does.

    My petrel did 500ml in 1m30s and also needs ti be with the right gas as the conparison wasnt the same. They do a better more powerful stove, the polaris that fits it too so is quicker and more efficient 👍

  • @tomd1914
    @tomd1914 12 днів тому

    I've been comparing the Petrel to the Toaks 650 lite, both with the Soto Windmaster TriFlex. Both boil water quickly if turned up high, but in testing fuel efficiency, they are both boiling 2 cups of water using an average of about 6.5g of fuel. I'm not seeing any significant difference between the two after dozens of boils of stream water at between 6500 and 9000 feet altitude. The Petrel is stable, holds 800ml if filled to the top, and I like how the handle folds over the top. The Toaks is quite a bit lighter (2.1 oz to 4.8 oz for the Petrel with no lids) but the handles do sometimes get hot. I use a stretch silicon lid on both, and use the lid as a pot grabber with the Toaks. I'm kinda intrigued by the Green Peak Stove and may try it. Thanks for the video, good job.

    • @NealBenson
      @NealBenson 11 днів тому

      Thank you for the encouragement! And thank you for sharing your experience with how much gas each stove uses per boil. This has been something that I’ve been trying to figure out. And in my testing, I wish I would have weighed each gas can prior to the use, but it just wasn’t possible and the conditions that I was in. I also put some silicone handles on my toes handles because they get hot. I really like the petrol pot and it’s handle. I think they have a great design and I can’t wait to continue to see how this company advances in the future.

    I would choose the Fire Maple over the Jetboil any day of the week. Especially over Jetboil versions that do not have control over the flame intensity - those are literally just for boiling water, you can't even make pasta in them without high risk of burning something. Add the benefits of the Fire Maple being lighter and cheaper. Plus the fire maple's handle is stiff, and I can't figure out when the Jetboil wins.

    • @NealBenson
      @NealBenson 15 днів тому

      That is such a good point. The Fire Maple has flame control. I was with a buddy who tried to cook in his Jetboil and it just stuck to the sides. Jetboils selling point is the ability to boil water. That is great if you're brining pre-packaged meals. I normally need to carry a Bear vault when backpacking and that means that I need to repackage and make my own meals to keep down on volume of food. I really like the Petrel!

    nice review, I recently bought the jetboil because price in this case happened to be a non-factor, but looking at the two, I like how the Fire Maple locks it's lid with the handle. A couple of differences I also noticed was that with the JetBoil I can just lift my pot and it brings the whole thing around, and secondly it would be nice if there was some kind of rubber lip so you can drink from the pot directly. I really like that the fire maple's burner just locks into place with the cup, very nice. the fire maple also looks a decent bit lighter, probably honestly better for backpacking

    Ill be honest,its kinda gross i dont wash my darn tough socks often, and they still dont stink. Super comfortable and they still hold up to wear

      @NealBenson 28 днів тому

      Honesty is good and so are their socks! It's nice having socks that you can wear for a week without washing. I'm sure you're not the only one because I've done it too!

    Great review. My REI gear will not wear out. If you like to buy gear often, don't buy REI because it will last forever.😀
