The issue I have with Lex, is he refers to Beach Boys as too happy, but references Pet Sounds. Does he even know that songs like Barbara Ann aren’t in that album? Obviously he loves the Beatles more that any band ever, but it doesn’t appear he’s aware of what Brian Wilson was about.

Right. He’s so annoying. You could make the argument that most of McCartney’s compositions with the beatles were “too happy”. Does he not realize that? Y’know the stuff that Lennon referred to as granny shit.
I can think of plenty of great beach boys songs that are nowhere close to having a happy vibe

@@austinskaggs4184 yea, but the beach boys had: one sound. And it sounds happy. Subtext and lyrics notwithstanding, compare that to the variety of the Beatles (regardless of which you prefer) and it simply doesnt compare. It's just naive to compare them, but people always do.
Footnote: God Only Knows is possibly my favorite song of all time, please don't just dismiss this as a hater, it too would just be naivety talking. 👍

@@finn4435 No they are not just one sound. Only a person who straight up doesn’t know would say that. That era from the beach boys that you are referring to lasted from 1962-1964. They did so much more than those early party hits. Only a small minded person would shove them in a “happy music” box. How can you mention god only knows and not know that? You’ve probably heard only a tiny fraction of their catalogue.

I had the pleasure of seeing Paul McCartney in Paris back in 2018. It was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Towards the end he sang 'Hey Jude' to the voices of thousands of people singing along. If that wasn't emotional enough for me he finished the show with the abbey road melody. Golden Slumbers into The End. That was pinnacle for me. I hope he's still around for at least another 10 years.

I like to think of myself as fairly grounded and rational, yet I think something inside me likes the idea lex starts talking about at the 1:40 mark. I think I’ve always had that type of feeling about exceptional people. Maybe it’s a compensating mechanism to think that gods walk among us, even tho I don’t subscribe to the general idea of deities. Maybe it’s some ancient consciousness that a few lucky people get to serve as the vessel for. It’s just that some talent seems unattainable, as if it has to be informed by generations of experience just to exist. Weird.

I have the same reaction to music as Rick, where it will induce tears, i'm guessing is due to the fact that I feel it on a level my body doesn't know how to deal with it, so? My eyes leak. What triggers it sometimes surprises me. For instance, Carlos Santana had a residency at the HOB in Las Vegas and I signed up to be on the mailing list. I was awarded a pair of tickets to see him on like a Wednesday. My husband also won a pair of tickets for the same night, and we couldn't give them away to save our lives. So I found a couple that was walking by and I just placed them in their hands. But anyway, I was listening to him play and it occurred t me that I was listening to one of the few remaining musicians that played Woodstock (he was tripping balls, as the story goes) but that realization and his playing of a solo hit me just right. It was gratitude on a level I couldn't verbalize. So my eyes leak
Then there are those songs that the music is just resonating with your own vibe frequency in such a perfect way that you feel it with every fiber of your being, and your body can't contain it, so the eyes leak.
Same thing happened when I saw The Dead with John Mayer standing in for Jerry. I was 15 when Jerry died and I HAD an opportunity to go see them but I never even asked because I assumed the answer would be no. Then was okayed to go see Metallica. Dammit. Anyway, I was once again gifted tickets to see them play at MGM grand (I think) and once again, they were off on an improvisational jam (as they do, and Mayer impressed me, too. He was a perfect stand in for the Man) But I was looking at the stage, listening to them jam, realizing I was doing a thing I never thought I would have the opportunity to experience in my lifetime, and my dad's passing was fairly recent and he is responsible for my exposure to the dead, it was almost like I could feel him there, and my eyes leaked. Which continued the rest of the night, as a matter of fact. No blubbering, just leaking. LOL
And there are certain vocalists whose singing alone will trigger it. Some don't even sing in English, but they could sing the ingredients off of a cereal box and it's just a quality of their vocal that triggers it. "the God note" is a term I have heard on a few occasions.
But I am also the kind of person that will cry when I am extremely pissed off. I recognize it as an outlet when it's got nowhere else to go.

Neat philosophy, but not everyone is capable of producing useful or inspirational works at equal levels. Folks like McCartney seem like you and me, but then have regular moments of genius that changes the lives of billions of people. The magnitude of their talent is obscured until you see one of their true accomplishments

@@freegame8628 It seems like it's probably a mix, with some folks more nature and some more nurture. I don't think anyone is 100% one or the other. If we think about how we learn and grow, it's in response to not just our environment, but the changes our actions make in that environment. When we're in a flow state we're doing that optimally I suppose?

I think that you are probably right, but unless a person refuses to believe what you just said and continue on, they will never get to the point of being at their creative peak. Even the greatest had to have the unrealistic voice at the start, willing them on to do grand things beyond their abilities.

By standards of your own philosophy Rick is capable of producing more complex philosophies then you on music
Deeming your comment null and reimposing his philosophy that we are all capable of being big fish.
The people who don’t believe that’s possible (such as this comment) are just the people who never try to be “big fish”.
This was his point. He doesn’t think like that. I don’t either and Id say it’s a much more beneficial approach then the idolizing others approach. Half of what your experiencing is NOT genius music but genius marketing.
Much more intelligent composers then anyone in the Beatles walk this earth and release music every day I assure you.

Joan Jet. At a small town on an Indian reservation. Some casino. Not allot of people there. Maybe 25 feet away everyone standing around. She was hypnotic live. I wondered if she was like that all the time. Allot of eye contact and interacting with the audience. Allot of presence. It didn’t seem like a routine entirely. Do the set and get in the bus. Tom Petty was great to see but was in a bigger auditorium. It was hard to see what he was up to with the audience. It was more like him talking to a sea of people. They all cheer and he plays a song. Joan was gunning down people in the room Individually.

Everyone will have at the very least a single masterpiece work of art, and that is their life. You cannot help but to be a shining ray of perfection in the context of what it is to be you. Every human being displays a facet of the collective aesthetic of humanity in a way which has never been done before, and in this way we are all artists. To make more formal art is merely to channel this into some medium others can understand. I hope, no I believe, you too will find your medium one day. Shine on you crazy diamond :)

@@peterbelanger4094 52 is not so old that you can't make changes to your life if you so choose. I'll bet there are things you know you can do to improve your situation that you've been putting off or convincing yourself are too hard or that you're not worth it etc. You must find the strength to rise to the challenge that faces you, or the demons in your head will continue convincing you that life is not worth living, and we all know where that leads. I know, you're probably thinking "yeah yeah, easier said then done. If only you knew how hard x is or if only you knew the pain I had to go through". To this, all I can say is that you are stronger than you think, you just need to give yourself the chance to prove it. Climb over your own ego to push yourself into changing your situation, or at the very least trying. Trying is the most important thing, because the more you try, the more chances you have to succeed, and the easier it becomes to try again. Start small and build from there. Rage against the dying of the light inside you, and you will find that the light grows with your courageous acts of self improvement. Most importantly, don't wait. Start today. Start now. If you do not seize the moment as soon as you can, the motivation will be lost and you'll find ways to convince yourself it was never worth it to begin with. Best of luck in your fight, fellow traveler. Whatever happens, I'll see you on the other side.

That’s what I’m trying to do, not necessarily a painter / musician but art (self-expression) can come through in all types of pursuits. Try making something you love, or picking up a task, comment back and share it with us if it feels right.
