Why We Get Stuck in the Physical Symptoms of Anxiety & How to Break the Cycle w/ Dr. Kate Truitt

  • Dr. Kate Truitt begins by emphasizing that an important part of navigating through anxiety is supporting the system and developing a new relationship with the physical data our body carries. Then she explains that the insular cortex, or the part of our brain that facilitates the mind body relationship, likes to inform us of how we are feeling in our body.
When we live with heightened anxiety for a long time, our system is reset to anticipate anxiety as the new normal. This can result in holding our breath, stomach pains or cramps, shoulder tension, or jaw clenching. This new normal becomes cyclical, reinforcing one another.
Therefore, it’s crucial that we help the brain and body create a new way forward. Creating space from the physical data can allow us to step back and ask important questions. What is this data actually about? Is it indicative of threat and anxiety at this moment? Or is it tied to a past encoding that our brain tagged as a reason to be anxious?
Dr. Kate then walks us through the Breathing Titration exercise. It begins by noticing if there is any information in our body coming up and inviting that to come forward. Next she asks us to find a part of our body that feels neutral and welcome in breathwork. Shifting the focal point allows our brain to know it can feel multiple things at once.
