This video goes out to these people who think the wrestling ring is made out of a trampoline or that it's just a gymnastics mat, or a couch in the living room. The steel metal beams and wooden boards that Joey shows you underneath the ring in his video, proves that you'd rather think twice about landing on this thing.

@@vlada ropes. Cables cause injuries, like Mick Foleys ear incident. And there’s only one person in America who makes ring ropes. They’re all handmade, one set at a time.
I bounced around a wrestling ring back in the 1990s. I helped assemble a ring (that had a spring) for an Indie show. Instead of getting paid, my friend and I were allowed to get into the ring and bounce around with the guy in charge who claimed that he was a jobber in several different territories. He said that the ring we assembled was relatively forgiving, but I was shocked about how much that ring beat me up. We were running the ropes. By the end of the day, I had a huge bruise under my right armpit. I had rug burns from the canvas. Even getting whipped into the turnbuckles hurt. I learned a lot that day including that I was too wimpy to be a pro wrestler.

I checked out a WWF ring in 1991 at a coliseum I worked at. It had some good flex to it and also had a microphone pressed against the bottom of it about every 2 square feet over the entire underside. I turned on the coliseums sound system and tapped the surface. It sounded like thunder throughout the entire arena, LOL.
I went to a WWE house show and had one of the VIp access tickets where I was able to meet the wrestlers but also walk through gorilla position and down the ramp to get my picture taken at the ring. The ring at least on the outside was hard, anytime I hear announcers or wrestlers talk about the outside canvas being hard I know now! Thanks for showing this!
My grandparents had a canvas crew tent. That material was tough as nails!

Nice, this is like that vignette in WCW where Ric Flair was in control of WCW and had Eric Bischoff doing all the hard tasks like putting the ring together. This is exactly how the ring was constructed.
The ring at my school was an old WCW ring and it was very similar to this one.
I own my own wrestling ring. It’s only a 16ft one closer to the ground but I love seeing others set ups. We’ve got carpet underlay sitting on our foam pads under the canvas also which I’ve found makes the bumping super nice. Still will feel it and take the wind out of you for sure but it definitely feels nicer haha

We have used different kind of mats above the wood, and we used way thinner planks. Once our ring broke and we bought a second hand ring from a foreign wrestler. "foreign" might sound like long travel for Americans, but here in Europe you can drive an hour and cross 2 borders, so we only had to travel like 3 hours. We asked him where he put the mat and he bassicly responded "you need a mat? This is wrestling, not ballet"
Yes. sounds like rings in Mexico. Not all but most are really stiff.
That is a pretty sweet set up. I have been in so many rings that just use plywood and carpet to cover the “speed bumps.” This floor is a-lot like the one we had at one the wrestling schools I was at (the good one) which was an old WCW ring

Old wrestling rings (WWF era) had springs. Back then the ring bounce up and down when the wrestlers jog before the start of the match. didnt know they got rid of it.
Back in the early 90's NWA/WCW would do fundraiser for non profit groups, might have been just in the Atlanta area but my school hosted an event. As host we had to put up and take down the ring and I can tell you first hand that it has very little give to it. After we put it together, they let us mess around until the doors opened and it gave me a new respect for the bumps they were taking.
After watching wrestling on TV for so many years, i went to an indy show a few years ago for the first time sitting only about 3 or 4 rows back and the sound the first time someone got slammed scared the **** out of me.
That same promotion came back to town a few times, for one show, the truck carrying their ring broke down on the way so it delayed the start time by about 2 hours. But it turned out to be an extra treat for everyone to see all the wrestlers chip in to set the ring up from scratch, there's had a layer of foam that kinda looked like "eggshell" that you'd put on a mattress but it was so thin it couldnt have done much to "soften the blow".
The ring that the WWF used at Wrestlemania 2 for the Bulldogs vs Dream Team match was the best! It made an insane noise and the Wrestlers looked like they were on a trampoline!
In my early 20s I wrestled for AAA on one of their rural tours. Pretty much going to some small farm towns in front of a couple of 100 people and the ring we used was like this but instead of foam and canvas it was old rags and a tarp.
Rings have changed so much throughout the decades. Once upon a time they would just slap some wood down and cover it with cloth tie it down and good to go. The bumps were harsh and very real. Still today the bumps are real but looks like there is a layer of padding over those planks of wood. Still wouldn't feel like being body slammed on a bed of pillows.

1:20 I used to do breakfalls on a wrestling mat on concrete for judo. This ring seems like paradise comparatively.

Hey, do diff promotions use different materials compared to another promotion? Because growing up as a kid I was always a fan of how the ring sounded. To me you could always hear the difference between a WWF ring and WCW ring. To me the wwf ring sounded more lively with a cracking noise compared to WCW who had a dry dud type of sound. They had such a dramatic sound difference that if you played a sound clip to me right now all these years later of both rings I would totally be able to tell the 2 apart just based off sound lol. But I was wondering does every promotion have its own formula and theory behind the materials they use and how they assemble their ring?
Yes they do. Some rings have springs, some rings have planks, some use 2 inch plywood, Foam is different.
Now when it comes to WCW rings vs WWF rings. The biggest difference that I know of is a WCW ring uses a wood frame as opposed to metal, which will give you that thud sound

It's fascinating to see the variance of rings used by promotions -- especially on the Mexico freelance circuit.
My friends and I used to wrestle each other on top of the roof of their trailer home behind his house, it was such a soft landing that didn't hurt at all. Slaming on the metal roof was more easier to land on instead of getting dropped on dirt and grass, didn't even need mats when wrestling on the roof.
Maybe it's the glasses, but I think that you look like a younger Steve-O.

To this day WCW still had the best sounding wrestling ring when wrestlers would land on it.
That's because WCW uses a wood frame with wood planks for the ring surface.
I ranned the ropes a few times and that was easy. Now taking a bump oh no....I took a couple bumps once at a indy wrestling company and it does hurt like hell until you start getting used to it. Depends on how you bump tho. Once you get used to the feeling the pain is barely noticable at least until a couple days later. But yeah I'm afraid bumping for 20 to 60 minutes will hurt like hell once you get out the ring because a couple minutes in and it still is bad for your body.

I've done ring crew for a couple different companies in the past. This ring looks stiff in a good way.
Some rings will have a big spring in the middle of the ring. You may see a layer of carpet also for padding. It's wild to see one broken down. Also, they hurt it isn't your bed you are jumping on.
Hint: It's wood, and it hurts to fall down on over and over, every night for years.

Wrestling rings are definitely not trampolines, mattresses etc. I remember going to an Impact Wrestling TV taping in Toronto several years ago, and the set up had the ring level with entrance ramp. I was already sitting ringside with my friends just waiting for the show to start. The ring crew realized there was a gap of about 2 inches between the ring and the ramp. They needed help right away to push the ring towards the ramp to close the gap. So I voluntarily hopped over the barricade to help them out. I took a good look under the ring, and gave the canvas a good 3 count on the edge of the ring (aka the apron). It was then and there I realized why so many wrestlers who take nasty bumps on the apron end up getting significantly injured. The apron is definitely the hardest part of the ring for sure.
U hopped the fence and started telling tall tales. They don't fuck around with nuts that jump the barricade.

Does anyone know why the arena sound is different nowadays? In WWF finishers sounded loud. It use to sound like a mini explosion on the Attitude era, but now when someone does a finisher the arena makes no sound. Maybe because the arena material? For example, wrestlemania 18 take a look at the matches, if you watch when DDP applies his finisher to Christian it sounded loud!
Sometimes the ring is mic'd up for a louder sound. It may be they are not mic'ing it up anymore.
I would love to train at this gym. I had a brief private tryout at the performance center many years back

I always thought it was stretched canvas similar to that of a trampoline just without the springs, I that's why wrestlers manage to do manoeuvres like flying headbutts from the top turnbuckle without feeling too much discomfort

I personally taken bumps on Boxing and Wrestling rings and there's not a big difference between both which is crazy to see too many wrestlers doing taking huge bumps on those rings.

That's crazy idc how many ppl say that's fake. The physical aspect of wrestling is 100% REAL.
I wrestled in a ring in 97' for a school event. Got slammed a couple times and was ok, but the next few days after that was a very rough time. Very sore.
Ring construction varies with different companies and what their general budgets are, smaller indie promotions tend to have bare-bones rings, while the WWE and AEW are much better built.
Not to mention for example WWE using multiple canvases at night depending on what they're doing and wrestlers saying that if you're in the first slide of the night for a match it's like landing on concrete
The NWA/ WCW used a Cable which had a Solid sounding SNAP when you hit them Where as WWE/WWF you never heard the hit!

Everyone thinks the ring is super soft but you're basically being slammed on hard wood. I don't understand why they dont make the ring just a little softer. Most of the fans think it's soft anyway, why not protect the wrestlers a bit more?

If I need to have the canvas printed with digital logos, what could be the best canvas material to be used? Since normal canvas fabric is cotton based and can’t be used in sublimation. What do you suggest for digital logo printing?

I thought of a move where it’s basically a falcon arrow but you hold your opponent like a gut wrench suplex.

Yes, closer grommets are better, about 18 inches apart.

I worked as a stagehand for over 32 years and I’ve built the ring for WWE, WCW, ECW, and TNA. I can guarantee that it doesn’t feel good to get slammed over and over on that mat!
I want to some small Regional show when I was a kid and I remember during the intermission there was no barrier nothing just chairs around the ring you know and I asked if I could touch the ring to see how hard it was and I remember hitting my hand on the ring and hit my hand on the concrete and going there's not much difference between the two of those is there that was the late 90s

Has some people ever used like metal sheets under the tarp? Some of these rings like the AEW bounce a little too much to just have wood in it.
I guess it's one aspect of the business that doesn't get enough attention or hasn't been evolved as much as you would think looking back on things.
Maybe one day there will be a material to replace the wood and steel that prevents/reduces short and long term injury. Shht there might even be a material ready available but back to my point, just hasn't been utilized.
