the improvement between Medieval (2002) and Rome (2004) is insane
It was also a downgrade in a lot of ways. Shogun 1 and Medieval 1 had features that were lost with RTW and never came back.
A good AI was one of them.
For me the best games in the series were Shogun (2000) and Medieval (2002) -- simple but very effective graphics engine.
@@spearPYN Yes, they had a resonating charm... even down to the soundtrack.
Still playing Rome1 till today. With mods though.
प्रियदर्शी Some things get left behind when technology progresses, gets difficult to code and the standards of players gets higher.
Everyone knows what the world needs. We need a medieval 3 with the graphics of attila and the engine of medieval 2 but slightly enhanced.
Set at the begging of the hundred year's war!!!!!
i quite liked attilas campaign in terms of difficulty but med2 city building and units wrre nice
Thumb up for the profile pic! \m/

Medieval 2 : Total War; that of nostalgia...
Medieval 2 the best no matter scene or story . I love the spy and killer animation so funny
Medieval was my first one. that's nostalgic to see :D though i have to admit i skipped a lot of them in between
I still play it to this day.. I can’t see myself playing any other total war games though.. I really liked the Europe/Africa/Asia setting
Medieval 2 had awful AI and full of bugs .
I still play it. (or rather, play it again after a decade)
Everyone’s talking about how Shogun and Rome and good, and they are, but-
I’m just here with Napoleon and Empire as my favourites- don’t mind me.
I love thr musket time period!
I love empire
I really wish theyd make an empire 2. I read somewhere that its already in the making but i cant find anything on it.
Empire is my favorite with Darthmod. That game had so much more potential, but you can tell it was rushed to be released; i'm not even talking about the glitches either. France was literally one settlement and they excluded almost all of Africa and East Asia. Then they threw in the trade nodes which are pretty much a joke. We need an Empire 2 though that includes the globe and a more realistic military setup, not copied units and buying replenishments in foreign territory.
You're better. I'm here stuck with rome 2
Rome Total War, still number one for me.
got rome and babarAIN
For me shogun 2
Yep with Roma surrectum it never gets old
I remember having no idea how to manage public order in large cities so I would just move all my units out of the city, wait for it to revolt, siege and retake it, then slaughter the populace down to a manageable size lol
Rome was brilliant because of the huge campaign map and the versatility of strategy that you could use to win. Also the challenge of beating it with one of the weaker factions after winning with a Roman faction.
For me though Shogun (first game) is still the best and the most fun.
music on rome and medieval 2 was so damn good, i missed that lvl of music in new total wars
We've got some solid soundtracks on total war warhammer series
@@adriangarcia4681 well True but its different kind, i wait for good and epic music in historical title. Rome 2, attila Or thrones of britannia in comparision with medieval 2 and rome...

Rome Total War was my first TW game but Medieval 2 is the best. I play Kingdoms still to this day. Timeless classic.
I think that Empire is underrated
well it has the most crapy ia its almost imposible to loose a battle in campaing no matter the enemy
@@darknachos3435 plus when it came out it was essentially a car crash
The real issue with Empire is the fact the late-game would be extremely laggy, since the AI would spam armies and move them randomly on the World Map.
It's laggy af when it was released, but now i actually enjoy it so much..

@@zurbondi lower the unit detail by one setting, this reduces the distance at which units turn into sprites instead of models and massively improved the performance for me

where is that mod?
@@sto_karfi842 Okay, so I forgot how I did it exactly.
But that's okay because I re-examined my data file and I am pretty certain this is how to do it.
Follow all these steps exactly and also, save a copy of RTW before you do this. It's a little complex but trust me, this actually works.
I did this on my RTW Alexander game because I modded that so you can play the base-game on Alex. Which I did because it's just better and the AI is smarter. Also there are storms... nevermind.
My point is that if you want this done on RTW vanilla, do this. If you want it done on Alex or BI, do this in those folders.

Let's say you're Dacia or something
>Be Dacia
>Open your *Financial Advice* panel.
>Click "?" at the upper right
>Read what the lady at the top says
>Click *"Show Me How"*
Be prepared to have your mind blown because when you do this, the game will actually switch your faction and you will play under the AI's rules. This means that battles will end as soon as you win them so you cannot mop up retreating units.
Enjoy.
Oh, also if you want to play as another faction after doing this, simply open up your script file and replace "gauls" or whatever with the new faction you'd like to play.
If you need any help, comment here and I'll try to explain better.
Good luck.

I really miss the first parts of the series. The most epic battle of all that I have ever seen is for Constantinople (1-st Medieval: Total War). It was a battle in which 5 Nations fought for one province at the same time. There were about 20 thousand soldiers and endless waves of reinforcements. In the new parts of the series, such coalitions of Nations in battles were no longer possible.
yeah, when battles happen from armies going into the same province rather than the same exact spot, more collaboration battles become possible.
Yeah or you could just go on crusade with a massive horde.
its a shame 3k didnt do much with the coalition system other than just a alliance system 2.0, that period regularly had coalitions between many different warlords
wow, what a flash back in time, what an adventure it has been to play this games, im still playing it now!
thanks for video

Warhammer wasn't a turning point at all in the series. Total War was already too refined before that. Rome was the turning point. And the problem with Warhammer for most TW fans - probably like the one that replied It's trash is that it doesn't play like a total war game. Magic ruined multiplayer. I like Warhammer and currently playing through campaigns on them but I understand the hate for it completely.
From Medieval to Rome, that was one hell of a good jump!
The music has always been amazing.
Agreed, although i stopped buying TWs after Attila but yeah from Shogun 1 to Attila, the music was always excellent indeed.
Empire. Still a favorite. By far
Warhammer 2 has the most variety out of all of them in my opinion (in terms of factions, units etc)...also the best looking one to date
The Total war franchise will always be my go to for an epic strategy game and always have been since i was just a kid. They are simply amazing and nothing else comes even close! I didn't even know a game like this could even be possible until I first played Rome total war back in the day, it still blows my mind!
What we need is not Medieval 3, but Empire 2.
Cavalry charges haven't been so satisfying since medieval 2
Watching your enemies fly 20 feet into the air as your knights slam into their formation, nothing is more satisfying.
Watching them get trampled in Brittania was good also...

I clicked on this vid because when me and my pa were talking about video games he talked about Rome: total war with such nostalgia that i looked it up
Two Total War campaigns I will never forget were fought in Shogun Total War and Medieval. The first was an absolute meat grinder. Playing as the Shimazu I was in control of everywhere close to Kyoto. My enemies were the Uesugi. They held almost everywhere else with a few Imagawa provinces or something like that. For some reason that made no tactical sense, they ignored my armies going towards Kyoto and instead sent attack after attack on that island in the middle. The map never changed. The tactics never changed. I had bowmen on a cliff, rows of spears and naginata and some samurai with swords. Two light cavalry units to get maximum captures of enemy when they routed. This lasted for years because whilst they were attacking me here, I couldn't build a large enough force to break through in the north. When I finally did, it was bliss.
Second was Medieval 2, playing as the Byzantines. During my first playthrough, I wasn't aware of the Mongol invasion. They kicked the shit out of me. Next time around, I was ready. Geared my tech research and military research towards producing the best Varangian Guard units I could muster before the Mongols attacked. I didn't care about the grand goals or survival afterwards. I just wanted to see how much damage I could do to the initial invasion. Took a few provinces near where they arrive and moved to the edge of the map.
I caught one of their armies as it emerged from the ether. One of the Mongols greatest assets is their speed and ability to move and fire with cavalry. Not that day. They kept advancing over a narrow strip of land, in normal march formation. I ran out of arrows for the few ranged units I had and wanted to take them out of the fray by manually routing them but I couldn't bring myself to do it. I wanted them to see the carnage they were involved in.
I think it ended up in about a 10-1 advantage in terms of kills. Some of those Varangian Guard had been around for the whole battle which must have easily lasted two hours. They butchered that Mongol army.
Next turn, a full two stacks of the Mongol army swept down and obliterated me to the last man. Still. That Byzantine army kicked ass. That's what I'll always remember about the early Total War games. The battles were epic. Nowadays, not so much.
I think there will be a new Total war series oneday "Total War : Genghis Khan"
Ottoman Empire: Total War

from 2002 to 2004 ... what a revolution!
My personnal top 3, i have played since medieval 1:
-Shogun 2 (game complete and balance except the diplomacy is weak, very good graphism at that time and i love the ambiance)
-Medieval 2 (first total war in wich i fell in love, the diversity is awesome, when you uprgrade your army, the skin of your weapon and armour change and i love play during this age)
-Rome 2 (i prefer this game to the other because i prefer the skin of the army, i love to see the phalanx, hoplite and barbar during the battle)
Idk how balanced Shogun 2 actually feels tbh ; castles provide a huge advantage to the defender , siege weapons got nerfed so much cause of pvp they are now useless in pve too , kisho ninja don't have a well defined role , hero units are just a waste of koku , yari ashigaru can still win against almost every other unit in the game thanks to yari wall , ecc...
That said...it still is a really nice game and probably my favourite chapter in the TW saga along with Rome 2.

I started with the first generation Shogun. Oh dear old memory
I miss shogun 1. I played that so much. What a wonderful game.
EMPIRE TOTAL WAR 2 COME ON NOW HOW CAN U NOT WANT IT??
Rome: Total War is always going to make me feel like I'm watching Decisive Battles.
It's fascinating to see the arc of Total War here. Improvements up to a peak at Medieval 2 & Kingdoms, collapse to Empire, rise back to Shogun 2, and then collapse again, which they haven't even come close to recovering from yet
Lol highly disagree
@@karljonson3287 At which point?
the Rome total war soundtrack gave me flash backs
Total war warhammer 2
My favorite is Empire TW
i like Napoleon more
My favorite is rome total war.
First played in 2011, mostly Rome Total War and Medieval Total War.Those were so damn good!
When the first game, Shogun came out, I didn't really know anything about it. This was in the days before the Internet was as easily accessible as it is now. I'd always loved strategy games, loved history and was 15 at the time. This game just took up weekends of my free time. Came home from school, booted this up and just sat there for hours on it. I still have the disc in a box full of old games in my parents house. There were some points in the late game stages where certain areas became choke points. No navies to launch surprise rear attacks in this game. So some provinces were the scene of battles for turn after turn until I could bring enough troops to force a victory. That doesn't happen in the new TW games and do miss those insane battles. And when they added the expansions with the Kensai and Battlefield ninjas, I had some great games sending in a mixed army of those two units against hundreds of enemy troops and watching them slice their way through them.
What they need to make in the future:
Total War: The Lord of The Rings
Total War: Game of Thrones
Total War: Genghis Kahn
Total War: Cyrus
Total War: Sikh Empire
Total War: Ancient Egypt
And most importantly
Total War: Medieval 3
Total War: Shogun 3
Shogun looks like Victoria 2.
lol
I've probably put thousands of hours into Rome Total War. Saw a friends brother playing it once and it blew my mind. Ran home and got it straight away. Been an RTS fanboy ever since
Rome total war 1 that was the nostalgia ! But medieval 2 aswell ❤
