Yes, that's why Carrhae will always be one of my favorite battles. Crassus forgot that Rome had beaten Spartacus only when its leaders stopped underestimating him and his lieutenants and called the overseas armies home to bring overwhelming force to bear. Surena tricked Crassus into believing that he only had to deal with a short lived arrow storm instead of an all day deluge. And contemporary accounts stated that the Parthians composite bows penetrated everything; including chain mail armor, and that the arrows even pinned the Romans' shields to arms and their feet to the ground.

Crassus army got crushed because they have no ceasar in the battlefield.
@ what could Caesar do in such a situation? Romans had lost the battle before it even begins. When Crassus trusted Parthian double agents Ariamnes and Agbar and rushed into the flat part of mesopotamian desert which was perfect for cavalry maneuvers. Roman legions were adapted to fight in Europe, not middle east deserts. They were too slow, too stationary and the only fighting style they were trained for was hand to hand combat. They didn't even know you could destroy your enemy without even touching him. They learned this in hard way and I doubt even Caesar could do any better in desert fight with troops who couldn't even ride a horse, let alone fight on it or shoot. Caesar had no chance and that was the exact reason Cassius,a veteran of Carrhae, killed him,to spare Rome another humiliating defeat.
@Arnold Wilson What ken said might actually have some truth to it. Yes, they did become slaves, but it's speculated that these roman slaves later on found their way east. There were chinese records of them encountering a group of soldiers using a "fish scale" looking formation which might actually be referring to the testudo, among other theories. It's interesting stuff honestly ^^
Imagine how utterly terrifying it must have been to be part of that Roman formation. You know you’re overstretched with no hope of escape, and gradually you start to realise that your armies tactics and abilities are completed unsuitable for the battle at hand. Your friends are dying all around you and your commanders - fierce men you have seen remain steadfast in tens of battles - are starting to waver and panic. You hold your ground as best you can and wait to die, because there’s absolutely nothing else you can do.
@Hoàng Nguyên The thing is, the Roman army was at an advantage at one point but Crassus's greed got the better of him and his outmanoeuvred army got slaughtered.
@@JosephGibson Crassus was advised by his Armenian allies and local Roman commanders not to leave the river and march his largely infantry army out into the open and largely waterless desert, but he was in a hurry to close with the Parthians. Although he is remembered for being uniquely foolhardy, he would not be the last Roman general, or emperor to be defeated by the Parthians over the coming centuries. They were always one of Rome's toughest adversaries.
@@Phed98 themselves ! because of their decentralized government there was always internal conflict after death of their kings. Actually that's how they were destroyed. Local ruler of Persia destroyed parthians and created sassanid empire.
It is actually terrifying to march in arid land, only to see thousands of heavily armoured cataphracts mounted on massive horses and armed with 3 m long gigantic lances galloping at full speed towards you.
Crassus was unaware of any Cataprachts; the fact that this portion of the Parthian army were all on horseback was throwing him for a loop which is why he first ordered his Legions into an extended line with Cavalary on the wings but mid deployment ordered them into a hollow square but it did"nt help much against Surenas"s backup of 1000 Camels loaded with extra arrows so they continue the hail until dusk
@GiustiziaSpietata actually, Crassus commanded the legions that defeated Spartacus and his gladiator army, but Pompey took the credit. So, I'm not ready to say he was a bad general. Not going through Armenia at the invitation of the King has puzzled many. Maybe Crassus wanted all the glory and didn't want to share it with Armenia.

Archers were recruited from the family while very young and trained for what was considered a highly regarded skilled profession. When captured, they had their middle fingers lopped off so they would no longer be able to pull a bow. When the armies met, they were at close range to each other and a lot of shade was thrown back and forth. The biggest one of all was the archers raising their hands to show their fingers intact. What everyone knows today as flipping someone off with their middle finger came from these archers. Now you can take this to your local bar and look like a genius.
Ah, these archers were copying the Brits who came 1,500 years later. The Brit archers used to h9ld two fingers up to the French adversaries to demonstrate their power. That sign remains as an insult six centuries later. Languages change but gestures do not.

The hail of arrows were merciless and had paralyzed them. Parthians are also known as Ashkani in history of Iran and they were the masters of maneuver. They were swifter than any cavalry. They could fire the arrows at a gallop not only galloping towards the enemy but also even as they galloped away from the enemy, they would turn around and they could fire back which is shown very well in this clip.

Zhukov and Surena were mistreated by their leaders. Musa bin Nusayr is also an example who was a talented Ummayad commander who had conquered North Africa for the Muslims only to be forced retired from the army and property confiscated. He was left to beg on the streets of Damascus.
This is very good indeed. Keep in mind though, the horse archers were lightly armored - if armored at all. I can’t be sure if cataphracts were armed with bows or if the notion of “cataphract archers” was even a thing in that era of Parthian rule. What I’m sure about is that the horse archers were supposed to implement hit and run and feigning rout tactics and for that matter, mobility was the top priority; hence the light armor. Cataphracts were shock troops, deployed to instill fear in enemy ranks and break their formations. To the Parthians’ surprise, this tactic didn’t have much of an impact on the Roman infantry as they were professional soldiers. They did however use the heavy cavalry to disrupt Roman testudo formations and support horse archer arrow barrage.

I hear a lot about military might of the Romans but not much about Iranians (Parthians were an Iranian dynasty like the Sassanid and Achaemenid dynasties who ruled Iran) . The truth is that Romans and Iranians fought many battles over several hundred years but the overall result was a stalemate. The borders between Iran and Rome stayed the same after all those long fought battles but history books are covered with military successes of Romans and not much about Iranians. @@muhammadrafae2965 every religion is useless, but christian and muslim religions are by far the most useless of them all.
You have to understand that before Islam, many other religions did exist with lots of people worshiping lots of random shit. A religion is nothing more than a sect that has taken the power. Nothing more. Free people don't need religions.
ROUSLAN Toumaniantz yea, free people don’t need suggestions too then. So you declare your thoughts here to persuade a religious person, also seems like a self worshipping religion which has very egocentric persoective.
The same men and soldiers who brutally crushed Spartacus and his slave revolt were the same ones who later got humiliated by the Parthians.

You hold your ground as best you can and wait to die, because there’s absolutely nothing else you can do.

"Only a fool would meet the Cataphracts in an open field…"
A Parthian HORDE Ned! in an OPEN FIELD!!!

Great Iranian general, Surena
imagine being hit by a horse galloping at full speed, it would delete your insides.
Outstanding animation . Amazing graphics and well defined .
My opinion is that Iran doesn't get much credit because it's located in Asia and not in Europe! Thanks for the video.
I'm so glad for that, thank you mate! I'm planning to cover more battle from Roman-Sassanid wars. :)
@@NedimCanIncebay Yes please, that will be much appreciated and with your amazing animation skills, they will attract many history enthusiast like myself.
@@surenhoss One of those crucial aspects to consider is that the LEGION had been designed to prevail over enemies in the Mediterranean basin and in Gaul and Germania. What was the war that the Romans had to face? Well, that of the barbarians of Gaul and Germany, not counting that of Spain or the British Isles: warriors who attacked en masse without concert and discipline and crashed into the great Roman shields until they were stabbed with the short gladius if they survived the attack. barrage of pylons
The legion was unprepared to face cavalry surrounding them and raining clouds of arrows over their shoulders. The legion could not go to the front, nor to the side, much less back.
the legions were usually made to face Gauls, Germans and other Romans; not to a real power like Parthia.
greetings 👋
Great video! Keep up the great work!
Thanks to the very cinematic and professional creator and designed the war armor of the Parthian soldiers very correctly
Thanks a lot mate, I'm glad you like the video and the models! :) (Huge thanks to Ancient Empires mod team)
0:20 - His name was actually Marcus Licinius Crassus, not Lucinius. Great video btw.
Yep, there might be some errors like that, before the final version there was a mistake like ''Partian Archers'' and changed it but this one I did not realize. o.o Thank you! :)

Parthians were from where I live (Khorasan) before they took power over Persia
They were great warriors and talented and well trained archers
They could hit their target with their arrows while riding on their horses. There a man in Shiraz-Iran who teaches how to do like Parthians did

Resumiendo:
This is Iran power . Thank you for this video ❤️
The 5000 Romans who escaped really would be blessing their fortunes .
The clean up crew has a big job ahead of them.
Amazing. I know Hollywood is never accurate but imagine if they manage to make an accurate movie of this battle! I

Parthians you idiot, not Persians.
@john doe they had the same tactics and the same force before alexander it was just the king of the time was more stupid to take his threat serius and bring them to fight
Yazar that’s exactly the reason why you must not from first called our lands Persia,it was always Iran for the people lived in it from first until now, iran is the state and persian, parthian, median and other iranian or even iranianized groups or tribes which ruled it were heads of the state and dynasties or governments of the lands of Aryans ,today the name belongs to the United of more than aryan people which are mostly persian speakers and other iranian groups speak differently type of kurdish, balooch and other, even azerbayjani peaple were turkik but iranian race otherwise iran nowadays belongs to different speaking or even different tribes and races in one nation ...
Putting all your eggs in one basket is utter stupidity. This was a case of poor intelligence of the enemy's capability. Crassus went in with mostly infantry assisted by miniscule cavalry and no air cover (equivalent force of bows and arrows). His army was decimated at a distance by heavy use of bows and arrows by the Parthian forces.
About time that Rostam Suren Pahlav (who many people think is Surena's real identity) got some respect for the outstanding general that he was. Suren means "The Heroic one".
