Well Angus Young was interviewed at the Monsters of Rock festival, and calling another 'Monster of Rock' band "pop band" is not a compliment to say the least.
This is an odd comment to have pinned...sound like a rebuttal to another comment...but without that comment in context it's just out of place pinned at the top of the thread. But for the record...calling a pop rock band a pop rock band isn't insulting...especially when that pop rock band's members also refers to themselves as a pop rock band...& especially when that pop rock band redefined what was popular at the time... If he had said, "just another pop rock band"...that would have been insulting as it would have been classifying him in with what was considered to be pop rock before them...but Eddie blew the lid off of that & set the new standard for what pop rock was.
Yeah, those days were the best. I saw AC/DC, Cheap Trick, The Who and several other bands on the same day while stationed in Germany. When Angus got on the shoulders of someone and was run through the crowd, he kicked me in the head, accidentally, of course and he pointed his guitar at me to apologize. I also caught a pick Rick Neilson threw to the crowd. Still have it. It was a great day and one that will never be repeated.
that was all thanks to BILL GRAHAM... it has never been the same since he was gone. He believed in mixing different tyoes of band to expose them to lots of people. He wasn't no dummy......
And for like 20 bucks. It's insane what some of these lineups were like. Absolute legendary shows. And at the time, it was like nothing. It was normal, lol. My pops told me he saw the Stones, Heart, and Thorogood for 17 bucks in 1981. lol I paid $300 to see the Stones in '06
Man back in the day Aerosmith was the s#i+. AC/DC and VanHalen were the new guys. For me, Dream On had been on the radio for awhile when I got the soundtrack album from the movie FM and Train Kept a Rollin blew me away, Toys in the Attic, Get Your Wings, Draw The Line, and Rocks all followed bam,bam,bam. Saw em live a couple times. I was glad they got it together and made some money in later years but the music never had the power of the early stuff. Love in an Elevator?… no thanks. Dude looks like a Lady?…big pass on that too. So that line-up was appropriate at the time but you’re right, later on it would never have worked.
@@rustyaxelrod I’ve been an Aerosmith fan since 1975….Went through the same “they are overproduced” phase as everyone else…..now after all that time I can appreciate the whole journey (although I feel like that new record Music from Another Dimension was not good). One more note: after the first phase up to Night In The Ruts (all of which are total classics!!) the record I dig the most is Rock In A Hard Place, the under-appreciated masterpiece with Jimmy Crespo. That is a KILLING fkn record and I encourage all real Aerosmith fans to listen to it. Jailbait? Joanies Butterfly? A cover of Cy Me A River….? I have NO idea how they got such an amazing record done under the conditions the band was in! Cheers….
Angus had nothing but very nice things to say about Eddie. In fact after Eddies death I read where Angus said he had recently ran into Eddie at an airport and that he (Eddie) always had a big smile and hug for him. Also Malcolm and Eddie were good friends.
Two of the greats we all grew up with. No egos between the two. We've been so lucky to have grown up at this time. We will never experience that magic again.
It was magic. We saw AC/DC in Bristol, the powerage tour. Then we heard the van Halen album, and felt Eddie changed everything, even more than Angus. And then Motörhead to think about, and then jobs and work, and then getting married…
Ya but it's fine with powerful music wizards like Justin Bieber now with way bigger productions than van Halen ever had . And the hits like Peaches in Georgia are incredible .
@Jim Rex Interesting. It’s clearly a matter of taste. I couldn’t get on with them after Bon died. What seems to be original with Angus, maybe even more so than Clapton, is using raw blues riffs lifted straight from Albert King, B B King, Freddie King (and maybe others called King) and rocking the riffs up faster and louder. Also, switching between the minor and major scales to great effect, especially when he does his solo playing between songs.
Love that mutual respect. And Angus meant nothing bad when saying AC/DC were more rock. He means they play more old blues type stuff, but beefed up. I think he was trying to say they are different bands and don't compare us.... we are both good in our own ways. Growing up and living in Sydney, you find us Aussies speak a bit funny and have different meanings when we say stuff. So I saw nothing negative in this at all.
VH is much more rounded than ACDC, some of their stuff is much harder than ACDC. Aint Talking Bout Love, Panama, Runin With the Devil, Hot For Teacher, House Of Pain, Get Up, 5150, Unchained, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Mean Streets, And The Cradle Will Rock, Atomic Punk, and on and on. Also, ACDC has some pop as well. Shook Me All Night Long aint a heavy song, it's pop rock. Shoot To Thrill? Pop Rock, Whole Lotta Rosie? Not a hard rock song, Who Made Who? Not hard Rock. Girls Got Rhythm, pop rock. You get the point. Both great bands. Both Rock and pop rock bands. Angus had nothing but very nice things to say about Eddie. Nothing lasts forever, everything we know, including us, fades away. We are fortunate to have been alive when Eddie and Malcolm were on this earth. They brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. Now we have their recordings and fond memories of them.
I'll always regret never seeing Van Halen live. Even after Dio and Lemmy died part of me still thought Eddie was immortal, it took him dying to really break the spell and make me realize that no one is.
Well hopefully you saw Lemmy live..I TOTALLY could've but didn't realize I wouldn't get to later, sooooooo big time regret on my part.. At the time, I didn't realize he was as sick as he apparently was..I did see Eddie once though, in 92.. Eddie, Mike, Sam and Alex were flawless.. I'm glad I finally saw those guys but I REALLY hate not seeing and hearing Motörhead live
Yep, it really sucks. When you grow up listening to these guys, and they are a part of your life, and then you lose them. It’s like losing an old friend.
I remember seeing this band called Van Halen at Gazzarri's nightclub in 1976. The guitarist completely blew the minds of everyone in the audience, including mine. His playing and sound was like no other, and never heard before. 2 years later he was completely blowing the minds of millions. Eddie was much more than just a guitarist. He built his own guitars, hot rodded his own amps, improved the Floyd Rose system, and also invented parts for the guitar. Eddie was simply the Elvis of guitar, guitar sound, and guitar innovation. He is the best there ever was, or ever will be. RIP King Eddie.
@@akfreed6949: Oh, so you're saying that the "D-Tuna" was Rose's idea? LOL. Without Eddie's input on the flaws of the Floyd Rose, it wouldn't have been improved at the time. Eddie was tweaking on the tremolo long before Floyd Rose came out with his system.
@@MGB18 During Ed's unpaid business deal with Kramer , he told them and I think The Floyd Rose company what he liked and disliked with the tremolo . And because of that Floyd Rose make some tremolos with some minor changes which explains all the different tremolos they have . I never said anything about the D-Tuna . The D-Tuna was all Ed's idea with a patent . Music Man ripped off one of his ideas with a patent .

As a historian/purist: EVH definitely launched a thousand ships as a true pioneer. What an innovator. The fact so many legendary and elite players have attested to this, shows just how revolutionary EVH truly was.
OK, I was also at this show, it was the summer after 8th grade going into 9th so right before high should in the USA, I was 14 years old. I had never been to a rock concert in my life, so I remember the day pretty vividly. LET me add to the description of Day on the Green #3 1978. First , the rock guitarist SLASH was also in the stands, 13 years old, at this concert and it's what solidified his dream by his description. Walking up the sidewalk was 8 people wide for what must have been over a half mile long, the sidewalk was nothing but shattered liquor and beer bottles, you could not sit down. When you got close to the gate it was dozens of trash bins overflowing with liquor bottles. This was not a place for an unchaperoned child. I was accompanied by older high school kids who were pretty mature and we kept to the safer seating areas. The infield was packed solid with a sea of humanity, drunken humanity burning in the hot California sun. No place for the timid or innocent. I was there to see Aerosmith and Foreigner, I had heard of AC/DC but was still unfamiliar, I had never heard of Van Halen yet. It's important to note here, by twist of fate, this open-air general admission event was the FIRST time AC/DC was about to perform in front of a 50000+ crowd anywhere in the entire world. There is video of the 1979 day on the green on UA-cam, but not 1978, 1978 was the first large crowd for AC/DC EVER. The fist big crowd for them was supposed to be the TEXXAS JAM in June, but AC/DC got shifted to an adjunct venue and only played in front of a few hundred, Van Halen played the main stage at Texas Jam to great reception. So Oakland DOTG#3 was the true first time AC/DC opened in front of Halen on this tour. When Angus and Bon finally took the stage there wasn't a single person in that whole stadium unconvinced they weren't watching true superstars, Including the other bands who were also witnessing this spectacle for the first time. The rest went great, especially Van Halen, prime Van Halen. but AC/DC WAS THE WINNER IMO. Pat Travers had his prime line-up with Pat Thrall at this show and they were unfortunate to follow VH, because the first acts were so good, it must have been torture to follow. Out of five bands, four end up being in the 100 million club, this just doesn't happen nowadays, even at Glastonbury, or Coachella. It would be wonderful if film of DOTG#3 1978 were ever found, but I think it was destroyed in a 🔥. So what we have is the following year 1979, which is also super great, but no Van Halen and AC/DC moves up in the line-up and no initial shock of the crowd.
I saw both early Eddie and Bon era Angus up close and they both left you flabbergasted but in different ways. With Angus it was the energy and with Eddie it was the technique. Both bands were amazing. Nothing to argue about.

I totally agree. It seemed Angus was searching for the right adjective to describe the difference between the two bands and “Pop”, for lack of better words, came out.
I don’t think it’s a jab and I don’t think he was talking bad about them. If you compare say Dance the Night Away to Walk All Over You…yeah, Dance is more “pop” if you want to use that word. I like both songs. People hear the term pop and it’s almost immediately linked to Beat It and stuff like that. It’s a term that’s used to describe a lot of music. Pop, basically from Popular Music. Also I don’t think there’s been a history of Angus or Edward talking bad about different musicians. I love AC/DC and I love VH (both versions), but stuff like this people take too seriously imho. Like who you like, that’s it. If you enjoy a certain kind of music great, I’m not going to shit on it. People like different things. You should check out Nuno Bettencourt’s video with Rick Beato where he talks specifically about AC/DC and CC Deville and he’s spot on about what music and what those bands do. And Nuno holds Edward in the most highest regard.
It was in the last 10 years of Ed's life when I was surprised about how much Ed loved AC/DC in some interviews and when Malcom died there was stories I never heard before where it was printed Ed was great friends with Malcom .
Did he finally stop lying about having no influences except Cream-era Clapton in interviews? Only took him a few decades... In many ways Eddie was as completely full of it as Roth and Hagar are. AC/DC must have been the only band he ever visited backstage and didn't have a drunk/coked-up nervous breakdown in front of, culminating in asking them if he could join them. That was what usually happened when he made inebriated trips to other people's dressing rooms. He was a good player, but a complete mess at all other aspects of life as an adult human being. I guess that's what happens when your abusive father forces you to become his regular drinking buddy/co-alcoholic at age 12.
I was there in the 70's too, I'm so glad I was obsessed with going to concerts and being in the front row 76-86 I seen everyone. I never forget it. Every time I think about it I realize what I did. I was just a lil kid.
I wouldn't necessarily take it as a jab. If it was another California band saying VH was a "pop" band, I would say yes. Considering Angus was an Aussie, their terminology is a bit different than here in the States. I believe he meant VH were more pop leaning, whereas AC/DC was more blues leaning (at that period in time}. Both subsets in the general frame of hard rock genre.
I was a freshman in HS when VH1 came out, we were all metal heads, hard rock. and there were a lot of great guitar players, great bands. But when VH came out and we started hearing them on the radio, no one could believe what we were hearing. Hottest album at the record store! That's right kids! Had to get off your ass and go to a store! Filled with albums! - and bongs in the back! But the rock and roll world knew something big just happened. I was a guitar player, played in bands, but no man, there's no way to even write what this guy was doing, it's a completely new musical language. So it was set forth from that day would be decades of musical genius to live evermore. I'm so lucky to have been there to watch it happen, see that generation of concerts. Hey, that ACDC though, holy shit, talk about vibrating the ground man. You felt that concert for days. They have one beat and everyone knows it HAHA! ~ And that era is probably why I can't hear for shit today. YOu had cotton in your ears for 3 days it felt like - little did we know it was compounding hearing damage and a lifetime of tinnitus HAHA! ~! totally worth it.
That Day on theGreen was my first concert and even my naive, seventh grade, stoned brain knew it was a once in a lifetime show! AC/DC, Van Halen and Pat Travers all tore it up that day. Foreigner was alright, and Aerosmith, my favorite band at the time had a very frustrating begin to their set. They started songs a couple of times, only to stop early on! Then there would be a long pause before starting again. I just thought they were having sound problems, but much later I remembered that those were the “days of excess”, especially for Steve Tyler. But I don’t really know **** about what really was going on. All I know is Aerosmith did find their groove and rocked out to close the show. Best lineup I ever saw. Thanks for sharing the stories of their friendship. I also want to thank you for pronouncing the AC/DC album “Powerage” correctly! So many folks say “Power Age”, which is a pet peeve of mine!
The first thing I remembered when Aerosmith hit the stage was Joe Perry seemed like he was just waking up. He was stumbling around on stage blocking the sun from his eyes almost like he had to get his bearings straight.
My cousin was at that same DOTG show in Oakland in 78. He and his friends were like, Van who? After their set they all ran up and bought Van Halen shirts. No joke. They were blown away.
If you watch interviews with AC/DC they explain their idea of rock-n-roll in detail. Its very much related to the drums and the exact timing and style of drum beats. Has almost nothing to do with how most people view music and classify rock vs pop vs punk, etc. Ironically, Eddie wanted to play drums, switched to a guitar, but wanted to play it like he was playing drums. Explains why his timing is legendary. In fact, both bands are what they are because they have darn near perefect timing and their sense of hitting the pocket is god like. I think its why they respected each other so much. They knew what was special... epic timing. Both are masters.

I was at that Day on the Green in 1978 as well, as a 16 year old I watched AC/DC absolutely hypnotize 70 thousand newly created fans, the were unforgettable, and I remember Bill Graham asking the crowd if we wanted to see them return, for Day on the Green 5 with Ted Nugent, and it was an overwhelming YES from the crowd. Great Show, Great times.
I’m surprised Angus didn’t mention Chuck Berry, there is so many of his licks in Angus’s playing. I’m 60yo, been playing guitar since 5th grade and have spent countless hours trying to copy Angus and even managed to get some of it right. Eddie’s stuff on the other hand I never really tried. Super skillful, innovative, and I love it but I just sit back and enjoy. A monster guitarist with some of the nastiest tones ever recorded but ya gotta admit there was a certain “popness” to many of those songs.
I was at that concert, too. That’s where I bought my very first Van Halen Shirt. I remember the Bay Area paper wrote that The Band from Pasadena Stole the Show. I regret not saving that article.
1978 Eddie Van Halen changed the whole rock scene! That first album was incredible! I saw Van Halen in 1982,great concert! I saw AC/DC in Atlanta GA in 1991 and it was the best concert I have ever seen!
I saw acdc on their highway to hell tour with bon scott and they played this song twice. It was my first concert ever and i will never forget that experience. It was mind blowing and a full on attack on my ears which were still ringing after two days. Ironically I missed van halen just some month before because I was under 18. I saw them later in 1980 which was an incredible show as well.
I saw AC/DC in Dallas, with Malmsteen opening. It was a great opening set and everyone had to be impressed. Yet, it was pretty routine until AC/DC came on. Total change of atmosphere, crowd came alive. I would never want to have to share a show with AC/DC. You can play, but you won't win.
I saw the exact lineup that year at a Day on the Green in Oakland. AC was first and were the best. Van Halen was just as good. Everyone was playing Running with the Devil before the concert in the parking lot.
Bill Graham sure knew how to put on a concert. Day on the Green was legendary. Sadly my parents wouldnt let me attend as i was only 5 years old and 5000 kilometres from California. Cheers
I saw Ac/Dc in LA, early December 2008. My buddy got excellent tickets from a big music industry guy. Eddie van Halen got his tickets from the same guy. He sat behind me, was with some girl, Wolfie and his buddy. Eddie looked very heathy, had a light blue sweater on. It was very cool!
I don't think Angus was throwing shade at Van Halen at all. He didn't say they aren't great... he simply stated the fact that Van Halen were more of a pop rock band as is proven by the fact that most of their songs had a pop flavor to it. Nothing wrong with that. It just is what it is.
I was there!!! Angus bopping around wireless through the entire stadium (on video) & later played wireless down on the grass 30 yards from me during Aerosmith. AC/DC opened … Van Halen rocked it… then Aerosmith. But, I was so 🍀high I have no memory of the other 2 bands. When I looked it up on Day on the Green history, I was so upset that I actually saw Foreigner but have no memory of them. Zero. I know from reading it that Pat Travers was there too, but absolutely no memory. However, AC/DC just exploded, but Van Halen was an explosion. Awesome show.
You lucky dog! I was born in '77 so I grew up on outdoor rock shows here in the Nashville area but, sadly, I think the magic of those days are lost for the foreseeable future. I wish so much that I could've been in the Bay area back in the day to experience the Day on the Green, just dig the footage of Skynyrd playing there in the summer of '77, absolute magic I tell ya! 🌞✌️
I wouldn't call the "pop" comment a punch at Eddie (or his band). He was just saying that there was no rivalry, which I'm sure was true. There are rivalries in sports, I don't think that artists (including musicians) think about that sort of rivalry.

Van Halen was blowing everyone off the stages at that point. AC DC was one of the few bands around at that time who could shake up Van Halen. That may have been the first time Eddie had the “I have to follow these guys?” feeling.
When you think about it, in 1978-79, both AC/DC and Van Halen were rejuvenating rock music. And most of the hard rock and many of the metal bands of the 1980s were obviously influenced by a combination of the two.
@@EdBenji The biggest problem with Malmsteen is he couldn't write a song people wanted to put on repeat on their CD or hear over and over again on the radio. Great player. Needed a strong songwriter.

Uli John Roth, Pat Travers, John Petrucci, Nuno Bettencourt, John 5, Buckethead, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Brian May, Hendrix, Frampton, Les Paul, BB King, Robert Cray, Ritchie Blackmore, SRV, and Clapton are just a few of great guitarists, and every one of them brings something different to the table. I don't see one above the other and that is what makes them great. Let's not forget to mention that most of them have respect and appreciation for each other....more so than the listeners.

My second concert, had a blast. AC/DC was the best. Those day on the green's was the best deal going. Oakland wasn't the best for sound but the bands made it rock. Great, great times.
AC/DC is the greatest rock band ever. No filler, all meat and potatoes, and a huge portion. Get people together, play this band, and watch the energy rise. AC/DC is essential, just like food and shelter.
Well yes Van Halen was more of a pop band than AC/DC especially at the time. He wasn't saying they suck. It's like what's your favorite drink AC/DC (whiskey) or Van Halen (tequila) but both can get you drunk and you might have a good time.

@@Sonoma_Coasteah, I’m from Boston area, Aerosmith’s hometown. The “Toxic Twins” and the rest of the band were out of their minds on drugs by then. Draw The Line was a terrible record, especially after Rocks. Tyler was a great singer but wasted all the time by 78. Saw m countless times in Boston n Providence in the 70s. A few since then, not a fan of some of the overproduced newer stuff. Tyler still fighting his addiction…. What an awesome fuckin show that had to be. Foreigner was much better live than on any of their records. Pat Travers was always a great take 🤘😎🤘

I was at the following years Day on the Green. AC/DC , Frank Marino and Mahagony Rush, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. Frank Marino blew all of them away. He should have been the headliner.
Saw the 1981 Texxas Jam in Houston. Too many bands to list, but the Headliners were Heart, Journey, Sammy Hagar, Joan Jett, Santana and others IIRC...all for $20.
Eddie blew me away more than any guitarist I ever saw circa 1979. But Angus has a point. There was more of a rivalry between Eddie and Randy R early on. Randy didn't really find himself in Quiet Riot but when he played with Ozzy he found his sound. I always wished VH was darker and played more metal like songs like Rhodes, rather than the radio fodder they often played. More songs like Runnin' with the Devil, Atomic Punk, DOA, Light Up the Sky, Intruder, and On Fire and less Dance the Night Away, You're No Good, Oh Pretty Women Jump, and Panama. I guess you cant blame them for going for the money though.
True in all aspects, VH went pop with 1984 and Hagar, but so did AC/DC with Back in Black to a degree. Randy never did go pop. He stayed true to his roots..
@@doctordetroit4339 acdc never went pop. They did go basic, around the ballbreaker album. Still had some great songs. For instance, bout 3/4 of the power up album is actually bad ass.

But I am a fan who doesn't have a problem criticizing! I think albums like stiff upper lip and black ice/ rock or bust, have some good songs! But alott of filler..
@@andrewcastillo9558 They're my favorite rock 'n' roll band too, and I agree that they never went pop. They even started to get labeled metal in the 80's (which I don't agree with) I do think they're one of the hardest rock bands of all time without being metal. Both EVH and the Young brothers have a certain classic rock n roll groove to their playing many players fail to capture. Malcom would often call it a toe-tappin "swing" type of rhythm which the drums also played a huge role in that particular sound.
I love accadacca i saw them in flinders street Melbourne doing highway to hell on back of lorry i was 6 yrs old but nomater how big they became ACDC are a PUB band
The funny thing about Angus Young is that most people don't know he's a tea totalling rocker. Maybe Bon Scott and his addiction are why he abstained from alcohol. Or, maybe he was watching Malcom going down the same road as Bon.
Having grown up through the late 1970's to the 1990's in East Troy WI, home of Alpine Valley, I have seen both bands many, many times, and there is no competition between the two. They're both Icons in history, and both will be missed sadly! Thank you for all the great memories! I will take them to the grave as well. And with some luck and forgiveness, I'll see you on the other side! God Bless!
I'm from central IL I remember seeing Grateful Dead there sumner of 91 and I wasn't a huge Phish fan but seen them with Bob Dylan in 98 I think it was.

I always thought Angus was 15 years older than he was, and Eddie 10 years younger than he was... I would've never guessed that Eddie was actually 2 months older than Angus.

If he had said, "just another pop rock band"...that would have been insulting as it would have been classifying him in with what was considered to be pop rock before them...but Eddie blew the lid off of that & set the new standard for what pop rock was.
The concert lineups back in the day were so ridiculous. Imagine being able to see AC/DC, VanHalen and Aerosmith at the same show.

Yeah, those days were the best. I saw AC/DC, Cheap Trick, The Who and several other bands on the same day while stationed in Germany. When Angus got on the shoulders of someone and was run through the crowd, he kicked me in the head, accidentally, of course and he pointed his guitar at me to apologize. I also caught a pick Rick Neilson threw to the crowd. Still have it. It was a great day and one that will never be repeated.

Man back in the day Aerosmith was the s#i+. AC/DC and VanHalen were the new guys. For me, Dream On had been on the radio for awhile when I got the soundtrack album from the movie FM and Train Kept a Rollin blew me away, Toys in the Attic, Get Your Wings, Draw The Line, and Rocks all followed bam,bam,bam. Saw em live a couple times. I was glad they got it together and made some money in later years but the music never had the power of the early stuff. Love in an Elevator?… no thanks. Dude looks like a Lady?…big pass on that too. So that line-up was appropriate at the time but you’re right, later on it would never have worked.

One more note: after the first phase up to Night In The Ruts (all of which are total classics!!) the record I dig the most is Rock In A Hard Place, the under-appreciated masterpiece with Jimmy Crespo. That is a KILLING fkn record and I encourage all real Aerosmith fans to listen to it. Jailbait? Joanies Butterfly? A cover of Cy Me A River….? I have NO idea how they got such an amazing record done under the conditions the band was in! Cheers….

It was magic. We saw AC/DC in Bristol, the powerage tour. Then we heard the van Halen album, and felt Eddie changed everything, even more than Angus. And then Motörhead to think about, and then jobs and work, and then getting married…
Ya but it's fine with powerful music wizards like Justin Bieber now with way bigger productions than van Halen ever had . And the hits like Peaches in Georgia are incredible .
@Jim Rex Interesting. It’s clearly a matter of taste. I couldn’t get on with them after Bon died. What seems to be original with Angus, maybe even more so than Clapton, is using raw blues riffs lifted straight from Albert King, B B King, Freddie King (and maybe others called King) and rocking the riffs up faster and louder. Also, switching between the minor and major scales to great effect, especially when he does his solo playing between songs.

Love that mutual respect. And Angus meant nothing bad when saying AC/DC were more rock. He means they play more old blues type stuff, but beefed up. I think he was trying to say they are different bands and don't compare us.... we are both good in our own ways. Growing up and living in Sydney, you find us Aussies speak a bit funny and have different meanings when we say stuff. So I saw nothing negative in this at all.

VH is much more rounded than ACDC, some of their stuff is much harder than ACDC. Aint Talking Bout Love, Panama, Runin With the Devil, Hot For Teacher, House Of Pain, Get Up, 5150, Unchained, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Mean Streets, And The Cradle Will Rock, Atomic Punk, and on and on. Also, ACDC has some pop as well. Shook Me All Night Long aint a heavy song, it's pop rock. Shoot To Thrill? Pop Rock, Whole Lotta Rosie? Not a hard rock song, Who Made Who? Not hard Rock. Girls Got Rhythm, pop rock. You get the point. Both great bands. Both Rock and pop rock bands. Angus had nothing but very nice things to say about Eddie. Nothing lasts forever, everything we know, including us, fades away. We are fortunate to have been alive when Eddie and Malcolm were on this earth. They brought a lot of joy to a lot of people. Now we have their recordings and fond memories of them.

I'll always regret never seeing Van Halen live. Even after Dio and Lemmy died part of me still thought Eddie was immortal, it took him dying to really break the spell and make me realize that no one is.

I remember seeing this band called Van Halen at Gazzarri's nightclub in 1976. The guitarist completely blew the minds of everyone in the audience, including mine. His playing and sound was like no other, and never heard before. 2 years later he was completely blowing the minds of millions. Eddie was much more than just a guitarist. He built his own guitars, hot rodded his own amps, improved the Floyd Rose system, and also invented parts for the guitar. Eddie was simply the Elvis of guitar, guitar sound, and guitar innovation. He is the best there ever was, or ever will be. RIP King Eddie.
To be more specific , Floyd Rose made improvements on their tremolo system from Ed's complaints on their tremolo at the time .

And because of that Floyd Rose make some tremolos with some minor changes which explains all the different tremolos they have . I never said anything about the D-Tuna . The D-Tuna was all Ed's idea with a patent . Music Man ripped off one of his ideas with a patent .

OK, I was also at this show, it was the summer after 8th grade going into 9th so right before high should in the USA, I was 14 years old. I had never been to a rock concert in my life, so I remember the day pretty vividly. LET me add to the description of Day on the Green #3 1978. First , the rock guitarist SLASH was also in the stands, 13 years old, at this concert and it's what solidified his dream by his description.
Walking up the sidewalk was 8 people wide for what must have been over a half mile long, the sidewalk was nothing but shattered liquor and beer bottles, you could not sit down. When you got close to the gate it was dozens of trash bins overflowing with liquor bottles. This was not a place for an unchaperoned child. I was accompanied by older high school kids who were pretty mature and we kept to the safer seating areas. The infield was packed solid with a sea of humanity, drunken humanity burning in the hot California sun. No place for the timid or innocent. I was there to see Aerosmith and Foreigner, I had heard of AC/DC but was still unfamiliar, I had never heard of Van Halen yet. It's important to note here, by twist of fate, this open-air general admission event was the FIRST time AC/DC was about to perform in front of a 50000+ crowd anywhere in the entire world. There is video of the 1979 day on the green on UA-cam, but not 1978, 1978 was the first large crowd for AC/DC EVER. The fist big crowd for them was supposed to be the TEXXAS JAM in June, but AC/DC got shifted to an adjunct venue and only played in front of a few hundred, Van Halen played the main stage at Texas Jam to great reception. So Oakland DOTG#3 was the true first time AC/DC opened in front of Halen on this tour. When Angus and Bon finally took the stage there wasn't a single person in that whole stadium unconvinced they weren't watching true superstars, Including the other bands who were also witnessing this spectacle for the first time. The rest went great, especially Van Halen, prime Van Halen. but AC/DC WAS THE WINNER IMO. Pat Travers had his prime line-up with Pat Thrall at this show and they were unfortunate to follow VH, because the first acts were so good, it must have been torture to follow. Out of five bands, four end up being in the 100 million club, this just doesn't happen nowadays, even at Glastonbury, or Coachella. It would be wonderful if film of DOTG#3 1978 were ever found, but I think it was destroyed in a 🔥. So what we have is the following year 1979, which is also super great, but no Van Halen and AC/DC moves up in the line-up and no initial shock of the crowd.
I saw both early Eddie and Bon era Angus up close and they both left you flabbergasted but in different ways. With Angus it was the energy and with Eddie it was the technique. Both bands were amazing. Nothing to argue about.

Angus could've said that they are just different but then he added that Van Halen were more of a pop band while AC/DC were more of a rock n roll band. And it was at the Monsters of Rock festival, so calling another Monster of Rock band "pop band" is not a compliment to say the least.

I don’t think it’s a jab and I don’t think he was talking bad about them. If you compare say Dance the Night Away to Walk All Over You…yeah, Dance is more “pop” if you want to use that word. I like both songs. People hear the term pop and it’s almost immediately linked to Beat It and stuff like that. It’s a term that’s used to describe a lot of music. Pop, basically from Popular Music. Also I don’t think there’s been a history of Angus or Edward talking bad about different musicians. I love AC/DC and I love VH (both versions), but stuff like this people take too seriously imho. Like who you like, that’s it. If you enjoy a certain kind of music great, I’m not going to shit on it. People like different things. You should check out Nuno Bettencourt’s video with Rick Beato where he talks specifically about AC/DC and CC Deville and he’s spot on about what music and what those bands do. And Nuno holds Edward in the most highest regard.
It was in the last 10 years of Ed's life when I was surprised about how much Ed loved AC/DC in some interviews and when Malcom died there was stories I never heard before where it was printed Ed was great friends with Malcom .

Only took him a few decades... In many ways Eddie was as completely full of it as Roth and Hagar are.
AC/DC must have been the only band he ever visited backstage and didn't have a drunk/coked-up nervous breakdown in front of, culminating in asking them if he could join them. That was what usually happened when he made inebriated trips to other people's dressing rooms. He was a good player, but a complete mess at all other aspects of life as an adult human being. I guess that's what happens when your abusive father forces you to become his regular drinking buddy/co-alcoholic at age 12.

I was there in the 70's too, I'm so glad I was obsessed with going to concerts and being in the front row 76-86 I seen everyone. I never forget it. Every time I think about it I realize what I did. I was just a lil kid.

I wouldn't necessarily take it as a jab. If it was another California band saying VH was a "pop" band, I would say yes. Considering Angus was an Aussie, their terminology is a bit different than here in the States. I believe he meant VH were more pop leaning, whereas AC/DC was more blues leaning (at that period in time}. Both subsets in the general frame of hard rock genre.

I was a freshman in HS when VH1 came out, we were all metal heads, hard rock. and there were a lot of great guitar players, great bands. But when VH came out and we started hearing them on the radio, no one could believe what we were hearing. Hottest album at the record store! That's right kids! Had to get off your ass and go to a store! Filled with albums! - and bongs in the back!
But the rock and roll world knew something big just happened. I was a guitar player, played in bands, but no man, there's no way to even write what this guy was doing, it's a completely new musical language.
So it was set forth from that day would be decades of musical genius to live evermore. I'm so lucky to have been there to watch it happen, see that generation of concerts. Hey, that ACDC though, holy shit, talk about vibrating the ground man. You felt that concert for days. They have one beat and everyone knows it HAHA! ~ And that era is probably why I can't hear for shit today. YOu had cotton in your ears for 3 days it felt like - little did we know it was compounding hearing damage and a lifetime of tinnitus HAHA! ~! totally worth it.

That Day on theGreen was my first concert and even my naive, seventh grade, stoned brain knew it was a once in a lifetime show!
AC/DC, Van Halen and Pat Travers all tore it up that day. Foreigner was alright, and Aerosmith, my favorite band at the time had a very frustrating begin to their set. They started songs a couple of times, only to stop early on! Then there would be a long pause before starting again. I just thought they were having sound problems, but much later I remembered that those were the “days of excess”, especially for Steve Tyler. But I don’t really know **** about what really was going on. All I know is Aerosmith did find their groove and rocked out to close the show. Best lineup I ever saw. Thanks for sharing the stories of their friendship. I also want to thank you for pronouncing the AC/DC album “Powerage” correctly! So many folks say “Power Age”, which is a pet peeve of mine!

The first thing I remembered when Aerosmith hit the stage was Joe Perry seemed like he was just waking up. He was stumbling around on stage blocking the sun from his eyes almost like he had to get his bearings straight.

If you watch interviews with AC/DC they explain their idea of rock-n-roll in detail. Its very much related to the drums and the exact timing and style of drum beats. Has almost nothing to do with how most people view music and classify rock vs pop vs punk, etc.
Ironically, Eddie wanted to play drums, switched to a guitar, but wanted to play it like he was playing drums. Explains why his timing is legendary. In fact, both bands are what they are because they have darn near perefect timing and their sense of hitting the pocket is god like.
I think its why they respected each other so much. They knew what was special... epic timing. Both are masters.

I was at that Day on the Green in 1978 as well, as a 16 year old I watched AC/DC absolutely hypnotize 70 thousand newly created fans, the were unforgettable, and I remember Bill Graham asking the crowd if we wanted to see them return, for Day on the Green 5 with Ted Nugent, and it was an overwhelming YES from the crowd.

I’m surprised Angus didn’t mention Chuck Berry, there is so many of his licks in Angus’s playing. I’m 60yo, been playing guitar since 5th grade and have spent countless hours trying to copy Angus and even managed to get some of it right. Eddie’s stuff on the other hand I never really tried. Super skillful, innovative, and I love it but I just sit back and enjoy. A monster guitarist with some of the nastiest tones ever recorded but ya gotta admit there was a certain “popness” to many of those songs.
Nor did he mention how pop Fly on the wall was. lol

I saw acdc on their highway to hell tour with bon scott and they played this song twice. It was my first concert ever and i will never forget that experience. It was mind blowing and a full on attack on my ears which were still ringing after two days. Ironically I missed van halen just some month before because I was under 18. I saw them later in 1980 which was an incredible show as well.
Me too. Angus got on Scott’s shoulders and while Scott walked around up and down the aisles Young played a solo. Brian Johnson never did that
I saw AC/DC in Dallas, with Malmsteen opening. It was a great opening set and everyone had to be impressed. Yet, it was pretty routine until AC/DC came on. Total change of atmosphere, crowd came alive. I would never want to have to share a show with AC/DC. You can play, but you won't win.

I saw the exact lineup that year at a Day on the Green in Oakland. AC was first and were the best. Van Halen was just as good. Everyone was playing Running with the Devil before the concert in the parking lot.

I saw Ac/Dc in LA, early December 2008. My buddy got excellent tickets from a big music industry guy. Eddie van Halen got his tickets from the same guy. He sat behind me, was with some girl, Wolfie and his buddy. Eddie looked very heathy, had a light blue sweater on. It was very cool!

Angus bopping around wireless through the entire stadium (on video) & later played wireless down on the grass 30 yards from me during Aerosmith. AC/DC opened … Van Halen rocked it… then Aerosmith. But, I was so 🍀high I have no memory of the other 2 bands. When I looked it up on Day on the Green history, I was so upset that I actually saw Foreigner but have no memory of them. Zero. I know from reading it that Pat Travers was there too, but absolutely no memory. However, AC/DC just exploded, but Van Halen was an explosion. Awesome show.

You lucky dog! I was born in '77 so I grew up on outdoor rock shows here in the Nashville area but, sadly, I think the magic of those days are lost for the foreseeable future. I wish so much that I could've been in the Bay area back in the day to experience the Day on the Green, just dig the footage of Skynyrd playing there in the summer of '77, absolute magic I tell ya! 🌞✌️

Van Halen was blowing everyone off the stages at that point. AC DC was one of the few bands around at that time who could shake up Van Halen. That may have been the first time Eddie had the “I have to follow these guys?” feeling.
When you think about it, in 1978-79, both AC/DC and Van Halen were rejuvenating rock music. And most of the hard rock and many of the metal bands of the 1980s were obviously influenced by a combination of the two.

I don't see one above the other and that is what makes them great. Let's not forget to mention that most of them have respect and appreciation for each other....more so than the listeners.
Are you kidding me? Holy fu*k, what a lineup. I was only nine so I was too young but that could be the best group of superstar bands in one concert EVER.
My second concert, had a blast. AC/DC was the best. Those day on the green's was the best deal going. Oakland wasn't the best for sound but the bands made it rock. Great, great times.
I was at this gig in Oakland, along with many other Daze on the Green. Bill Graham Presents was the best.

Back in that time Angus was already a master of blues rock guitar. I think Eddie appreciated that.
I was there Day On the Greens were GREAT !! JULY 23 1977 was Led Zeppelin both days Van Halen had so much Energy it was Unbelievable awesome

No filler, all meat and potatoes, and a huge portion.
Get people together, play this band, and watch the energy rise.
AC/DC is essential, just like food and shelter.

Well yes Van Halen was more of a pop band than AC/DC especially at the time. He wasn't saying they suck. It's like what's your favorite drink AC/DC (whiskey) or Van Halen (tequila) but both can get you drunk and you might have a good time.
Tell me at the time what was pop about Mean Streets and Unchained? That's the deal. Van Halen could play. From Running with the Devil to Top Jimmy.
Well Angus was interviewed at the Monsters of Rock festival, and calling another 'Monster of Rock' band "pop band" is not a compliment to say the least.

And Pat Travers. Aerosmith was bad though. Tyler and Perry were wasted. Out of tune guitars and Tyler's vocals were bad.
@@Sonoma_Coasteah, I’m from Boston area, Aerosmith’s hometown. The “Toxic Twins” and the rest of the band were out of their minds on drugs by then. Draw The Line was a terrible record, especially after Rocks. Tyler was a great singer but wasted all the time by 78. Saw m countless times in Boston n Providence in the 70s. A few since then, not a fan of some of the overproduced newer stuff. Tyler still fighting his addiction….
What an awesome fuckin show that had to be. Foreigner was much better live than on any of their records. Pat Travers was always a great take 🤘😎🤘

Malcolm Young was a Good friend of Eddie , Eddie heard Angus's playing and he was hooked .. loved both 💪🏾👊🏾💯👏🏾🤌🏾
I was at the following years Day on the Green. AC/DC , Frank Marino and Mahagony Rush, Aerosmith and Ted Nugent. Frank Marino blew all of them away. He should have been the headliner.

Saw the 1981 Texxas Jam in Houston. Too many bands to list, but the Headliners were Heart, Journey, Sammy Hagar, Joan Jett, Santana and others IIRC...all for $20.

Eddie blew me away more than any guitarist I ever saw circa 1979. But Angus has a point. There was more of a rivalry between Eddie and Randy R early on. Randy didn't really find himself in Quiet Riot but when he played with Ozzy he found his sound. I always wished VH was darker and played more metal like songs like Rhodes, rather than the radio fodder they often played. More songs like Runnin' with the Devil, Atomic Punk, DOA, Light Up the Sky, Intruder, and On Fire and less Dance the Night Away, You're No Good, Oh Pretty Women Jump, and Panama. I guess you cant blame them for going for the money though.
True in all aspects, VH went pop with 1984 and Hagar, but so did AC/DC with Back in Black to a degree.
Randy never did go pop. He stayed true to his roots..
@@doctordetroit4339 acdc never went pop. They did go basic, around the ballbreaker album. Still had some great songs. For instance, bout 3/4 of the power up album is actually bad ass.

But I am a fan who doesn't have a problem criticizing! I think albums like stiff upper lip and black ice/ rock or bust, have some good songs! But alott of filler..
@@andrewcastillo9558 They're my favorite rock 'n' roll band too, and I agree that they never went pop. They even started to get labeled metal in the 80's (which I don't agree with) I do think they're one of the hardest rock bands of all time without being metal. Both EVH and the Young brothers have a certain classic rock n roll groove to their playing many players fail to capture. Malcom would often call it a toe-tappin "swing" type of rhythm which the drums also played a huge role in that particular sound.

The funny thing about Angus Young is that most people don't know he's a tea totalling rocker. Maybe Bon Scott and his addiction are why he abstained from alcohol. Or, maybe he was watching Malcom going down the same road as Bon.
Teetotallers don't chain-smoke like Angus.
Very few bands can top AC/DC for sheer energy and power. Just sayin

Having grown up through the late 1970's to the 1990's in East Troy WI, home of Alpine Valley, I have seen both bands many, many times, and there is no competition between the two. They're both Icons in history, and both will be missed sadly! Thank you for all the great memories! I will take them to the grave as well. And with some luck and forgiveness, I'll see you on the other side! God Bless!
I'm from central IL I remember seeing Grateful Dead there sumner of 91 and I wasn't a huge Phish fan but seen them with Bob Dylan in 98 I think it was.

I always thought Angus was 15 years older than he was, and Eddie 10 years younger than he was... I would've never guessed that Eddie was actually 2 months older than Angus.
Well, back in the day they tried to fool you that Angus was 16 when the band recorded High Voltage but he was actually (almost) 20 ;-)
@@ulfnoren Holy mackerel that is too funny, but believe it tho - any way of marketing it to the younger generation too that would beg to buy records, they used to promote Eddie Van Halen as younger too I believe.
