    After a sitcom ends, you're always left wondering what would happen in the characters lives. I'm glad I got to see what became of Rhoda and Mary, and I'm so happy that after everything, they remained best friends.

    Mary Tyler Moore is the one who inspired me to buy a big letter "M" for MY Mom, too. Mom's name was Marjorie, and she always wanted a letter "M" just like Mary Tyler Moore, so I bought one for her. She (Mom) passed in 2005, and to this very day, I still have that letter "M". VERY sentimental to me. lol :D (I love you, MTM, you still turn me on with a smile.)

      That's such a wonderful story. Thank you for doing that for her ! Unfortunately I have no children to give me an M at the age of 58, but I sure can buy myself one and paint it to my liking. Thank you for the inspiration and giving me the feel goods. Im glad you have her M. Big hugs to you years after your post. God bless you ! ❤ Stay strong and kind hearted and live a good life for her.

    I didn't even know this movie existed. Mary and Rhoda made such an impression on me when I was a teenager. Mary showed me a woman on TV who was single, had a career and a good life and, being an aspiring artist, I wanted to BE Rhoda. How interesting that I would stumble upon this movie 20 years after it was made and I am the age they were in the movie. And they still inspire me, even if the script was a little cheesy it had a good message and their essence came through. Thank you Mary Tyler Moore and Valerie Harper, the world was so lucky to have you both, especially girls who grew up being influenced by your work.

      Remember "Lou Grant" after the Mary Tyler Moore Show ended? The thing is this wasn't drama. It wasn't comedy. It was soap opera. Drama requires dangers beyond just needing to find a high paying job so you don't get kicked out of your wealthy high rise apartment in Manhattan. That's a comedy trope where nobody is any danger of anything but embarrassment. Drama requires a mystery to solve beyond looking up the address of somebody you lost touch with where everybody knows pretty much exactly how the story is going to go before you see it. The problem here is that Mary became famous with two of the funniest comedies in television history and this might have worked as a comedy but it came across as soap opera.

    • @GSU2004
      @GSU2004 6 років тому +3

      Jim Scribner Right. Lou Grant worked well as a drama as it showed the other end of the news business which can be gritty, tiring, and more. Asner is an actor who can do both comedies and drama well. Not many can pull that off as some people come off as naturally funny as Mary Tyler Moore. She thrived in comedy. Also, the original writing team was not brought back in for this project for some unknown reason. Brooks and company were still alive. I know Brooks may have been tied up with The Simpsons which was going strong at the time.
      Also, given Mary's on screen advocacy for women, I am sure she wanted to continue to have the MTM character in a realistic and modern setting as the original show was based on such. We seen that she did later marry but divorce as in the show, the engagement was called off prior to the start of the series (it was hugely controversial to show a divorced or single woman on TV in a career at that time. Mary originally wanted the character to be a young woman focused on career instead of family but the network decided against such). Even in this movie, we're seeing two middle age women attempting to have a life after children and divorce while still attempting to keep it together with all of life's hurdles.

    I love MTM and Valerie Harper. I frequently re-watch MTM show and Rhoda on youtube and know each show so well. I love this movie because of them however it was not all that good. It came off very scripted, stiff in delivery and poorly "acted." That being said, many pilots are the same until everyone settles into and develops the characters. They were well loved developed roles years ago however time changes us all . I like to think if they had been given the opportunity to continue in a series they would have developed into the true Mare and Rho. Thanks so much for the upload.

      You realize that had this become a series the first episodes probably would have been pre-empted by the attacks on the World Trade Center across town from where Mary was working at a news station. Whoever wrote this movie should write a sequel called "Mary and Rhoda and 911" because the year after she got her new job Mary would have been at Ground Zero.

      @justingaffneysamuels2072 4 роки тому

      It was considered to be a pilot for a series. I looked it up. It got a lot of negative reviews because it was currently and didn’t focus on the old cast of Mary Tyler Moore. It was about the relationship of Mary and Rhoda. It shows you how stupid people are. There’s no way all those people would be in the same place together after 20 years.

    • @MoniqueFromPlymouth
      @MoniqueFromPlymouth 3 роки тому +2

      @@justingaffneysamuels2072 | "There’s no way all those people would be in the same place together after 20 years." Exactly. In real life, any one who has ever been in paid employment knows that once a workplace closes down or everyone gets fired, all those co-workers you befriended that entire time will quickly disappear like everyone has died - you almost never see each other again. Watching Mary and Rhoda reconnect in the movie is also a rarity in real life.

    Mary’s timing is off due to her advancing diabetes , she became mechanical , and read her lines instead of emoting because she was trying to overcome her physical troubles . I admire her courage , she gave it her all . Her books were wonderful because she could take the time to sift through her feelings . She did a wonderful job in moving forward with her physical set backs . I believe she was a far more generous and giving person as she got older but it didn’t come across as it does with Valerie . Mary is only 60 or so here and looks fantastic but her diabetes affected her vision and her movement which kept her from really connecting through the lens of a camera . Her delivery was forced and never flowed . I found the behavior of the daughters to be grating and dis respectful . Pleading with your adult child to behave civilly is fault of the script . Conflict can be written with more feeling and depth and this project failed these two great talents . All of MTM success was due to the humor that was character driven and this takes time , hard to do in a 90 minute movie . If it’s not on the written page then the stars have to create it on the set and they did their best with a poor script . 60 is not old and the characters only ten to fifteen years younger acted like they were 20 . One word on Valerie - she is such a warm intelligent actress , she warms up a stale script better than any one , that takes true talent . This had to be hard for her , to work with a great friend - Mary - and know she was struggling with her timing due to her physical challenges . She supported her by giving everything she could bring, she did it because she loved Mary . All of her acting success started because Mary saw her talent from the beginning.What a loving giving soul . I wished the format was better because if it had this could have led to a few years of working together and making new memories for them and for us.

      @@stuartwise5709 | Not doing the movie would forever make us (the audience) wonder what became of Mary Richards after she was fired by WJM. Yes, the movie was not Emmy award-winning. But I am glad MTM made "Mary and Rhoda" to show us that her character did in fact moved on from her Minneapolis days, continued to work in the media field, got married and had a daughter later. As for Mary and Rhoda not mentioning the other characters, well, if you think back, how many times did Mary make appearances on Rhoda? I loved the Mary Tyler Moore Show and it is one of my all time favorites and while it was great seeing Mary and Rhoda together again, this movie was horrible. It was meant to be a pilot for another show starring these two, but it wasn't well received by the public and it was taken off the table so I guess I'm in the majority. It was just really boring. And while Rhoda still came across as Rhoda, Mary's declining health showed her as frail and she just wasn't the same character. Too bad. The orginal was darn near perfect.

    I love the optimism of this, but the slow clap was so unrealistic though. In reality no one would have given a shit, Jonah would have taken all the credit for the good ratings, and Mary would probably just have continued on in anonymity, even if she did tell him off. But at least she would have affected a good trend in journalism.

    Well, the movie wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good for y2k era. Especially from Mary and Rhoda's pre-boomer generation perspective.

    For me, this just didn't have any of the charm of the original series. I didn't like how "worldly" Mary and Rhoda became. There were no interesting secondary characters. I almost think it would have been better to have it set up as if it were a sitcom, with a live audience. And one or two other characters from MTM or Rhoda mixed in. But to each thier own.

      I think "worldly" works for Rhoda but not Mary. I agree that more sitcom-ish would have been better. I think the writing was weak. They focused more on "feels" and less on story. I feel like this could have been an inspiration to Gilmore girls though . . . .

    What happened to Joe?
    Scenes were cut from the time it was on T.V.
    This T V. Movie sucked ...
    Why did the writer's have Mary be a widow?
    Rhoda 2x divorced? As no mention of Joe...
    Why no patriachals in the movie?
    No mention at all of Brenda?
    Dumb movie reboot...
    Also did NOT feel mother's & daughter' were close at all...something was really missing...

    This was very disappointing. Expected more, and Mary/Rhoda deserved better.

    What is that horrible music at the end? This whole production was just too generic. It didn't capture the essence of either character, or have the feel of either show. It would have been nice if they could have intertwined both the theme from MTM and Rhoda at the end. And at least had a "Meow".

      I loved the Mary Tyler Moore Show & I loved Rhoda's sitcom but this movie dragged a lot. If it wasn't for Valerie Harper's energy & her humor, I might not have managed to watch all the way to the end of the movie.
      It was nice to see Valerie & Mary together again though just like it was nice when they were together on an episode of Rosie O'Donnell's talk show.

    Well, I loved seeing them together again, but this movie made it look like 1970 Minneapolis was a lot funnier than 2000 NYC...........and that getting older makes life much more dramatic.
