      It never got made. I fixed the car the following weekend and didn't have the time to film it. I haven't taken this video down as I feel there is still some information in it for others.

    Here's the deal, as I understand it. Apparently, the factory oil filter has a proper 'anti drain-back valve' in it. Some aftermarket filters do not, or maybe they are just not truly effective valves. So what happens is that an improper filter allows the cam chain tensioner to drain and go slack. When you re-fire the engine, the tensioner takes a while to re-tighten the chain. During that time, the chain slaps the snot out of the plastic guides, which subsequently fail after enough repetitions.

    • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  3 роки тому +9

      You are very correct! Personally I only use Motocraft filters, but Wix and Amsoil filters also have this valve. This may be why my chain guides were in decent shape.

      @1D10CRACY I think my chain rattles at start up. Can this eventually ruin my engine?

    • @Michael_Lorenson
      @Michael_Lorenson 7 місяців тому

      Yes. It might not be a total write-off, but once the chain guide fails, there is enough slack in the chain for the engine to 'jump-time', meaning the chain slips on one or more of its sprockets, which changes the timing relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft(s). Not good. Not good at all.
      At best, the engine will run poorly when this happens. At worst, there will be interference between one or more of the pistons and corresponding valves, ruining the engine.
      I suggest you put a factory oil filter in it immediately. If the noise goes away and the thing runs right, you just needed the correct filter. If the noise persists, then you have a broken timing chain guide. If you let _that_ go on, you should expect trouble. @@Ace-44

      @Ace-44 7 місяців тому +1

      @michaellorenson2997 Gotcha. Thanks for the really informative info. It only sounds like my chain is loose during the initial start up then goes away. Never hear anything while driving. Sometimes I'll hear it during start up and other times I won't. I'll definitely put in a factory oil filter immediately though.

    You do not need to remove the water pump, just loosen the four water pump to pulley bolts before you take the belt off and just remove the pulley and leave the pump in place.
    Great video.

    I guess this is fixing the chain rattle on a budget. But a proper timing repair should involve replacing the chains, guides, and tensioners.

    • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  4 роки тому +13

      Maybe. But I'm pretty old school, fix what's broken and move on. I highly doubt the chain was streched and the guides looked great. My guess is someone bought a cheap kit and the tensioners in the cheaper kits are prone to early failure. A new set of OEM tensioners and we are on the road again. This fix will probably last another 100k miles or more. As you said a budget fix, but also calculated risk failure was involved in the decision.

  • @thisguysgarage
    @thisguysgarage 4 роки тому +1

    With out hearing it run hard to tell
    But a chain and tensioner are cheap. Just clock it and put it back together. Another possibility is lash adjuster under the lifters.
    You have the cast iron tenioners which is good. I would not trade them out for plastic replacements.
    Is there any rubbing on the cover that you can see?

    • @1D10CRACY
      @1D10CRACY  4 роки тому +2

      No signs of rubbing that I can find, and very little wear on the chain guides. The tensioner on the drivers side is super sloppy and seeps oil when you press in on it. The passenger side does not do this at all. Guess at this point I replace them and see how it sounds.

    • @thisguysgarage
      @thisguysgarage 4 роки тому +2

      @@1D10CRACY the good new is parts are cheap and at this point you would not put it back together without a chain and sprockets.
      If the noise persists look at the lash adjusters they can be problematic.
      Try and get cast iron tensioner if possible

      You do realize its the same exact engine with minor changes to emissions equipment right? The suspension and chassis are modernized with rack & pinion, cast control arms, better trailing arms, etc. But the running gear was just re-wrapped by FoMoCo. Aesthetically, the last gen was with the time period with more bells and whistles.

    Well Bro anyone who takes the time to do that much work with the miles that are stated and just replaces the one tensioner is out of his fucking mind ..a complete kit with New water pump Oil pump Chain & gears & guides new tensioners runs just north of 200 bucks . How silly to get that much work done knowing full well that work is actually scheduled maintenance anyway...

      If you consider this a difficult job, then by all means spend the 200 bucks and do it right! For me, this was less than a few hours and I was on the road again. I only intend to let this car see 300k miles, it's just a daily driver, nothing I really care about.
