This doesn't happen in other media. New movies don't cost more because they had a bigger budget. New albums are still the same price even if they cost millions to produce or were made in someones bedroom on their laptop. Why do games have such a massive price just because they were made by a bigger studio with more resources? Maybe if they made a better game that wasn't a buggy pile of ass these AAA studios would make what they spend back and then some without having to price them at what most people make in a full working day.

@@TalesOfWar: That's not really true. Home video prices have pretty much increased every time there was a new format. Bluerays were priced higher than DVDs, and DVDs were priced higher than VHS (despite DVD actually being cheaper to manufacture). Although admittedly, the shift digital download didn't really see a direct price hike, but then again, it's not a format that has completely obsoleted it predecessor either.
Still, if anything, it's surprising video games stayed at a consistent price across multiple generations of console hardware. Note, this is not me defending the recent price hikes, I'm only saying we're lucky it didn't happen sooner and more frequently.

@@TalesOfWar this actually isn't new, Nintendo 64 games infamously cost 70-80 bucks brand new back in the day due to Nintendo's bone-headed decision to use cartridges instead of CDs like everyone else which resulted in manufacturing games for it being more costly. This time it feels like overcompensaying due to Sony and MS being unable to ship as many consoles as they wanted to due to supply chain issues with the materials to make the consoles.

I've wanted to get a gaming pc, but pretty much everything I want to play on it is either indie games or games that are over a decade old. And these are only further cementing that. Not only that, it adds another point to the argument to never buy anything on launch day.

And these companies are celebrated for it. Like they did you a solid.
This is the one obvious advantage the PC has. Yeah, you might have to apply a patch to get things to run smoothly on modern Hardware but you're not locked out of playing something like Lost Planet, Painkiller or Metal Gear Rising, because you just have the wrong box.

      @Mogura87 Рік тому +1

To be fair, if we look at gaming historically, just because a port of something exists it's in my opinion silly to expect every game to be perfect on everything, but that's what we've come to expect in the age of multiplat slop. The PC port of FF7 was a joke, but I would never play the PS1 port of Shadowman when I could play the PC or Dreamcast versions. There has always been a mix of superior original versions and inferior ports, with a host of interesting differences, ever since consoles and micros started receiving arcade ports in the 80's (or even the 70's arguably). There were always a ton of quality console exclusives you couldn't experience on a Commodore 64, but on the other hand the micros had their own strengths in their own ways with a ton of creative and varied software.
In the 90's and early 2000's, which in my opinion is the golden era of gaming, there was still a major divide in releases between PC and the consoles with tons of exclusives, but people weren't complaining about everything not being on everything, and I much prefer it that way. I mean just sticking to PC there were a lot more interesting games made specifically for PC in that era (CRPGs, RTSes, physics-driven FPSes like Half Life etc.) than the sloppy seconds console ports that is 95% of AAA games on PC today. Unironically the variety of cool games of AA and AAA budget level across all platforms (PC, console, handhelds) was much better because of divergent hardware, incompatibilities and exclusivity, in addition to lower costs of development of course.

It is so wild to me how graphically similar some of these games when running them on "medium" settings are compared to something like L4D2 on its highest settings, a going on 14 year old game. And yet, they are so freaking poorly optimized they hardly run on PCs that could probably get into the hundreds of FPS on L4D2.
I know there are other factors but feel like the death of physically owning games has totally demolished any drive for these companies to do any sort of proper optimization. I know size doesn't really have anything to do with quality these days (hehe) but I still get nervous when I start to see games that take up 10x more gigs of hard drive space than they have in gameplay hours.

Really doesn't help that PC GPU manufacturers have been keeping the average VRAM artificially low. 8GB has been the "standard" for way too long, even given the massive price inflation on PC hardware, they're still too cheap to add more to keep up with the consoles' VRAM advantage. Now that devs are targeting next gen only, it's really showing.

Well... in all honesty, the people buying those products _are_ part of the problem. As was said in the video, this has been going on for decades and people still _pre-order_ this shit or buy it on release day. So, in the end, it pays off for the companies: Less money spent on QA and development and people still buy their shit.
The _only_ way this situation improves is if people finally stop buying these products.
That's not "jumping through hoops to blame the people", that's merely stating the sad fact, that, in capitalism, money rules. Stop paying for shit.

I think a lot of players are still in a similar position. They have their school laptop and want to play games with it. That makes the small scale indies the right level of intensity for their lower power systems.

The thing that pisses me off the most about the “it’s a spectrum” argument about PC hardware is that you don’t have to treat it like that. You can find what the average Steam user is running using Steam’s reports, get one, and then use that as your test box. Mobile devs (especially those targeting Android) have been doing something similar for literally over a decade. On mobile, “we’re sorry, but the platform is a spectrum which is why our app runs terribly” does not fly.

In 2017 got into PC gaming, built a fairly good pc for £1500 and use it for video editing alongside gaming.
Nowadays, I play CSGO and League on PC, every other game I have a PS5 and Switch for, they run games reliably, and well in 4K and look great, and the exclusives are good.
The gaming PC industry continues to be very expensive to keep up with. Even if you buy top of the range, it will become outdated very quickly. And despite the consoles hardware already being less, they are far more reliable than the ports and performance PCs can get.
