SO, here's an unexpected cover! :P I've been wanting to cover this version of the song ever since I heard it, but sadly, it wasn't that popular and no one had made an instrumental yet :/ Luckily, Disturbed released a music video and got everyone's attention! So I used the wonderful instrumental track from DIU Karaoke to make my vision come to life. This was easily the hardest song I've sung in terms of my lower range. Speaking of which, I don't know why I'm feeling more attracted towards my lower range lately xD Either way, bare with me in certain parts and I hope you enjoy!
A HUGE shout out to y'all for sticking with for these past few years :) There's some BIG plans for 2016, so bring along a friend and stay tuned~ You're not gonna want to miss this ;)
Mixing, editing, and vocals by: Caleb Hyles
Music: The Sound of Silence cover by Disturbed, original by Simon & Garfunkel
For the love of god everyone that is upset about the original song being composed by simon and Garfunkel, correct the song was written by them. But this specific cover of the song is in the style of Disturbeds rendition of the song. Their rendition took off just as quickly and basically formed into its own new song. stop arguing over it, enjoy the voice of the incredible talent covering the song and move on with your day.
I agree! The creator of the actual song approved Disturbed's cover as well!
You're always going to have people who display loyalty to a song or group. They don't think that classics should be tampered with. Despite the fact that Disturbed's version is much better in many peoples opinion (mine included) you'll always have hard liners who will whine about it.
I agree 👍🏻
What's funny to me is at the very bottom of the description the 'Music:' was attributed to the sound of silence cover by disturbed. Original by Simon and Garfunkel.
@@zedeff most don't think to read through and find that out. Especially when they decide to insult the person who make there own cover of the song without actually seeing if the person who did the cover put down that kind of information showing that they do know whose the originator of the song and know who did their own stylized cover like Simon and Garfunkel and Disturbed respectively with their versions.
This is basically a cover of a cover of the Sound of Silence.
coverseption
+FillyCheezStake cheers kev
+Miguel “I'm jk” Mustermann Elementary, my dear Watson!
not even basically, it is xD
yup
Just sitting here thinking.. the Video title says "Disturbed".. so this is a cover of a cover.. Mind = Blown
Yes, cover of a cover ♡
Richard Pollay actually a cover of a cover of a cover lol
+Leia M. it's just a cover of a cover. he was covering Dusturbed's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's original.
Richard Pollay its a cover of disturbeds cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song I know :)
+Leia M. then what makes it a cover of a cover of a cover?
It's just a cover of a cover.
Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains... within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night... and touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never shared
And no one dared... disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"... and whispered in the sound of silence
Thank you
Caleb,
I'd never heard of you before today. This popped up in my feed after listening to the Simon & Garfunkel original and the Disturbed cover(which I've probably played 25,000 times). You've done an excellent cover here; not quite the raw edge that Draiman has(which I've never heard replicated), but still a nice lower-range performance. I also really appreciate the simplicity of the video. My screen isn't flashing with "Follow Me On Twitter" or "Like Me On Facebook" or "Buy Me A Sandwich" or anything, which I like, and I really like the grey-scale, almost gritty filter, with the darkness all around you, which really fits the mood of the song.
I'll be checking out your channel. You've done well here, and you should be proud of this performance.
Brad Simpson I agree. But I feel like anyone trying to replicate disturbs sound is almost impossible. It's too unique
Sean Tobin Disturbed's sound, as a whole, is not terribly unique, and has been successfully replicated all over the Internet. David Draiman's vocals specifically are a different story. The edge on his voice and some of the more guttural sounds he's known to use haven't been convincingly copied, or at least not that I've heard.
Brad Simpson I chuckled at "buy me a sandwich"
Welcome to the family... you won’t be able to leave though, simply because Mr Hyles is amazing.. you just want more and more
Welcome.
You will not be disappointed, Caleb is very talented ! 😊
Tried to sing the same way you did...
My whole family is screaming at me out of pure annoyance.
damn
Fuck ‘em, keep at it, you will
get there.
Just sing louder
Hey Caleb 3:07-3:08 is exactly why this is by far my most favourite version of the sound of silence on UA-cam. You're insanely talented dude :D
I love that little harmony there! I didn't realize it was in the Disturbed version until I heard it here. Sooooo goood
I got chills when you said "Hello darkness,". Enough said.
I thought your name was Gabrielle Weeb, as in weeaboo. jfc I need to sleep
Lmaooo
+TechMage Plays (TechMagePlays) same
I imagine this guy fighting a whole ass dragon his voice is so beautiful and powerful! He gives me medieval vibes for some reason bahaha
1:58 when you were going higher, you almost made get emotional, that was phenomenal.
This is literally the best version of this. It's just so unbelievably good, like holy fuck, how are you even real?
+bitch thanks so much!!!! :)
+Caleb Hyles no problem Caleb~ ^u^
Caleb Hyles you called Jessie pinkman a bitch!
I think I like the original a bit more, but this is still a great one, and I think it's better than the cover it's covering.
Caleb, in the mid 1960s, when this song came out, I was an abused child, struggling to cope. Simon and Garfunkel became the sound track of my life. Another of their songs, I Am a Rock, was my theme song (the subtle sound of pain in the last two lines tells you that the whole thing is only what the singer wishes were true - it made me feel that someone understood my experience). I never dreamed that I would hear a version of Sound of Silence that I liked better than the original. I wouldn't normally even listen to a cover of S&G. But it was you, do I did. It very nearly brought me to tears. Your voice is perfect for this song, your emotional expression better than the original. I love the timber of your voice on the lowest notes. I love the little wobble in that one shift from low range to high range -- it feels like part of the emotion of the song. I love the power and passion in the climax, and the sudden fall to the ending. And then the silence, and then the power of that direct gaze. Amazing. The only thing I don't like as well as the original is the change in lyrics near the beginning. I found the Disturbed video (nice visuals) and could hear that he's the one who made the changes. I don't think the extra harshness in his voice (metal voice?) adds anything to the song. I think your version is much better. Would you consider doing a cover of I Am a Rock? (Did I really just say that? Yes, actually, I did.)
Wow, I've heard several versions of this song but only just heard this one today. Just blown away by the quality of his voice in this song; clear, rich and smooth. Pitch perfect and, in my opinion, captures the essence of the original and the Disturbed cover.
please please PLEASE cover Hallelujah? i think you would do an amazing job!
He fid
Well done! Few can do the Disturbed cover justice. You and Jonathan Young are the best I've heard; you express the heartache and pain more effectively while his righteous anger cuts through more, both of you nailing the vocals.
CAleb... you seriously need to try to get a cover going with Avi Kaplan of Pentatonix! It would be a HUGE boost for you and your voices are two of the best I have ever heard.
I'd LOVE that! I just don't even know how to get in contact with him xD
Lemme see what I can do.
+Moswen Dhark *roots for you*
I wish I could like this more than once.
share the feeling.
I wish I could dislike this more than one. This Operatic cover is not in the style of Disturbed, just a crappy choirboy cover.
@pkdiddy You do realize a cover doesn't have to be in the same style as the source, right? That's why it's a "cover."
edit: Actually, after listening to Disturbed's version again, Caleb's cover is pretty damn close.
Read the title. Does it say Simon and Garfunkle Sound of Silence or does it say Disturbed? Also, if you think this sounds like Disturbed, you have a tin ear. Like it all you want but hear it for what it is.
pkdiddy this guy has a better cover than disturbed mate
You are literally the best singer I've ever heard, how have you not been more noticed??
Just need more shares around the internet :D
Caleb Hyles Well I'll certainly do what I can mate
Caleb Hyles you are a great singer. I have been listening to your work for a while now. how do you do it man.😱
I bet he's not noticed cause he's too darn good
Wishbear 4444 he's not been noticed cause he's on UA-cam. No representative wants to sit there and search YT. They go to concerts, and shows.
one of the best singers i have found on youtube so far
You have to look into Jonathan young. Caleb has done some collaborations with him and he is really good.
At the start I thought "meh! Better than pop music", but when you got going in the second half I then thought "this man needs to give me lessons!"
Great cover of a cover pal, love from the UK.
I LOVE every single cover with the line "In the sound of silence" in a deep voice... ADORE
hey man this cover was incredible. If I may I would like to make a suggestion , can you do a cover of "so cold" by breaking Benjamin.
yas
yes! yes! yes! but the acoustic version would fit Caleb much better!
YEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Xander Kresh That would be so awesome! Yes!
Yes!!!
There is so much passion in your voice, it's beautiful.
You deserve a lot more recognition. Seriously, every cover I listen to is better than the last. Phenomenal performance. Bravo.
thank you very much! :)
Of course man, keep up the great work!
i agree
At the beginning you had a very Lt. Worf quality to your voice, it worked really well actually. I am so glad I found about you thanks to Jonathan Young. Subscribed.
Thanks man, greatly appreciate it! :)
10/10 My absolute favorite version of this song EVER!
thanks a ton!!!
agreed!
Even though you used Disturbed's arrangement, you made it into your own musical theater-type version. Well done. :)
Changing the tone and style of the song gives it a new meaning.
Simon and Garfunkel: Fever Dream
Disturbing: Agitation and Anger.
Celeb:Sadness and Sorrow
b r u h h when you sing "And the people bowed and prayed/To the neon god they made" which is my absolute favorite part of the Disturbed version, it gave me chills, I'm so proud of you, you pulled it off so well
Thank you very much :)
Caleb Hyles You are absolutely more than welcome
I've the weirdest story about watching this. I heard your cover of "Hellfire" from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and I thought I'd learn it from your video for future auditions but I also heard Disturbed's cover The Sound of Silence and thought I'd learn that one too.
A few weeks later I find this video in which you covered this song too!
These are the types of songs where your voice is most suited for sure
"Ain't No Rest For The Wicked by Cage The Elephant"
Caleb. You know what to do.
You NEED to sing "If I die young." you would be PERFECT
YES
+Ethan Holloway watch?v=ejm0ikaZ-sg
Thomas Kaxe what?
Just a small taste of what it would sound like, if he sang it. :) Oh, and him playing the drums ofcourse, but that's just a bonus. :p
Thomas Kaxe I can't assess the link. I try on UA-cam I'm commenting on Google plus
Caleb, you sure did choose one hell of an act to follow on this one, It is not an easy one to cover. You pulled this off well. Thank you for recording it.
This cover legitimately made me cry. Good God, you've got such gorgeous range.
someone please call an ambulance for the replay button..its been badly abused. ;-;
No Chance, lad. It's dead.
Nah we use the loop function ;3
Sadly the loop button is dead too. I’m sorry. V-V
So happy you did this. The Disturbed version gave me goosebumps, and so did you. Thank you, loved it!
Love this song so much......and the raw power captured here with such passion! It may not be tit-for-tat David's own cover, but I find myself left in tears, non the less. I both admire your ability to pull this off and the passion you displayed in this piece. Very well done, my good man. Don't ever stop being an inspiration and doing what you do - me and mine will continue to spread the word of your channel and the music you perform as well as show our support in every way we can. Much love and all our appreciation - Nathan and the J-crew
I may have commented this before, but I remember showing this to my mom when we were sharing music, and not even five seconds into your singing, she said "Well, he was definitely a theatre kid."
This song speaks to my heart on a whole nother level. My little brother passed away March 5th, 2017. And he Loved this song. Your cover of this, Caleb, made me cry and belt out every word with you. This was one of the songs retrieved from his very damaged phone. Your voice has gotten me through some rough spots, singing with you and listening to how much emotion you put into each cover. Even if you actually don't, I still like to think you do. Thank you, Caleb. For your existence. I greatly appreciate you and your talent.
Your lower range is AWESOME. I can't even describe it. And then you hit the high notes and I was like, goddamn, what is better!? Then your harmonies made me shiver and I don't even know what to say anymore. I hope, one day, I'll be able to sing like you... But I'm in a colplicated situation where I risk to never be able to sing again... This makes me realise how important and powerful music is. So... Thank you.
+Kira Kitsune His low range is indeed awesome (far from "really forced") his high notes are insane, anyone who says otherwise might just have auditory problems. I know man, caleb is goals for us aspiring singers. Good luck with your situation man.
This man took one of the most beautiful covers I've ever heard, and made it better. This was absolutely astonishing!
The part that amazes me is when you sing at Falcete at 2:00 with a soft voice and then you sing with a mix of falcefe and chest voice at 2:05. Even with the mix, so much subtle and power voice control
The most beautiful cover version of this song I have ever heard! Holy cow, your voice is that of an angel! The richness verberates throughout the entire song and gives power and meaning to each word all the way through! Geez man, you gave me chills with every note you sang! PLEASE for the love of all that is good in this world keep singing! Your voice is one people envy to have! I'm subscribing because of this song and how your version really struck me and how amazing it sounded! Keep singing for a long time please! I want more of this!!!
Thisam is incredible. Have voice his tone it is so mesmerizing. It's like he feels every word he sings. Deep pure and just all together amazing
Great control of your voice. Awesome...
oh yes, it's true;)
I love this song more than anything else, (I listen to it when I'm stressed or tired) its in my top 3, and oh my god. you have no idea how excited I was when I saw this video pop up.
you're an amazing singer. thank you so much for all your hard work in your performances! you're so amazing!!
Could you please consider doing Fall Out Boy - The Phoenix?
You do an incredible job with FoB covers and that song perfectly fits your range.
I give major props to ANYONE who can pull off singing this song because those low notes are so hard. and his sounds SO FRIGGING AMAZING. like I am so jelly of how incredible your voice is!!!
Caleb's cover of this never fails to give me chills.
Can you Make a Cover from breaking Benjamin diary of jane
;-)
+Simon Clemens especially the acoustic version.... would be badass
Yeah
Simon Clemens agreed
ive had 1:54 stuck in my head all day and i couldnt think of which one of your videos it was from... so i obviously had to listen to like 50 of your videos just to find it XD
good times.. good times..
Wow!
Subscribed.
+Lukas McGregor Thank you very much :D hope you enjoy the rest of my channel!!
Caleb Hyles you have the voice of an angle do u know dagames?
same
Dude how are u so good you got some power in some of your songs, YOU sounded just like disturbed, U NEED TO GO TO A SINGING CONTEST I SWEAR TO GOD UPON MY VERY SOUL
I still love coming back to this video to feel better and to feel more motivated. Your voice along with Disturbed's instrumental is so moving. Have you thought about looking into more Simon and Garfunkel, like Bridge Over Troubled Water?
Not sure if the Disturbed version gave me more chills than this one... Both really good!
Disturbed. Don't get me wrong, this is really good but it's to perfected for me. All I can hear is a singer singing not a ton emotion, just technique.
+Trinity Elizabeth agreed. This version is technically good but it lacks the raw power.
Trinity Elizabeth agree completely, it sounds good but it lacks the raw emotion and power disturbed put into it. When the deep drums come in where disturbeds brought chills his was kinda meh because of that lack of power and emotion.
Caleb Hyles might well be a better singer than the majority of singers we have out there in any genre. David Draiman is among the very best though. I think the main difference here though is that David can hit lower notes than Caleb.
Oh, I worded that poorly. I meant that the low notes are more comfortably in David's range than Caleb's (which leads me to believe that the bottom end of David's range is lower than Caleb's).
You nailed that one man, god damn. Nicely done.
Goosebumps . . .
When he lets go he's amazing. At times I feel like he tries to control the moment, and great music doesn't work that way. I've always felt that music is something that's already there, and flowing. Like a river or electrical current, we have to be the best conducter possible, so we can express what it already is. Our human differences and nuances change its path and pattern but it's an ever present energy none the less.
I remain in absolute amazement that you are not famous yet! Your voice is one of the strongest and cleanest voices I have ever heard. I am in love with your voice and your videos, and I am honored that I can enjoy you vocal talent every day.
3:07 holy shit
I'll see your 3:07 and raise you 3:24 - 3:30
Yeah. There is a moment like that in every Caleb Hyles cover at some point.
Chills
That was insane. Legit goosebumps. 10/10.
1:45 - 2:15 god mode engaged.
you should be on the radio man. You're amazing.
You gave me chills. Your tones, vibrato, subtlety of the video like Disturbed’s was beautiful.
I hear this version as more of a "Broadway" style. I really LOVE it!!!
A cover of a cover...its the rapture.💀
But I believe in Revelations, what do I do ?!
U have to make a cover of a cover of a cover and upload it to UA-cam!!!
Weasel Gaming Darn! ok I 'ma do that now.
Lies have been told...
Inception
jesus christ how did i only find you now?
do stars from les misrables, your voice is perfect for it!
Yes! :D
YESS
Oh I so hope he does stars! It's my favorite les miserables song :)
That would be cool. Just make it a double feature of "Stars" and "The Confrontation" with Jonathan Young.
Even though the low notes are a little difficult for you. Your range is simply incredible. This is a very hard version to some with so many octave changes. Great job. So glad I found your channel
So I was browsing instagram and came across a video, “male singers singing female high notes,” it featured you singing “bang, bang” and thought it was pretty awesome. So I found my way to youtube, looked you up and started watching more of your videos. I thought, “hey, you sort of sound like David Draiman.” I continued watching and saw that you made this video and I immediately watched it! You sang this song perfect!!
i can never listen to this song without thinking of the meme behind it.
Cancer by My Chemical Romance
dude, PLEASE do Mama by my chemical romance! PLEAASE
I second this
Oh, man, any good cover of that song would be incredible to hear and he's sure got the capacity for energy and belting ability for it.
i found you through Jonathan's channel. your voice is amazing. I love this especially because I've been on a repetitive loop of listening to this song recently. Amazing cover.
This song has so much meaning in my life and I too have done a cover of it. I cannot exaggerate how much I love your cover!!!
Could you do a portal song like still alive or want you gone?
yes
He should do Cara Mia Addio! (The portal opera song)
yesss
+Bob Soldier Like the turret opera? YES.
Any of those 3 would be MARVELOUS!
cmon man, get down with the sickness
I LOVE THE ORIGINAL.. I LOVE THE COVER... I LOVE THE COVER OF THE COVER!!! Awesome job dude!! xD
I am so very impressed by your vocal diversity and range. From the low notes here, to high notes like in "Defying Gravity". What talent!
Im gonna sing this song for a choir showcase, and I am basing it off your performance. Absolutely chilling, and amazing. Your voice is so powerful. I love it! Thanks for an amazing cover and video.
Best part 3:07 - 3:10
yep
NO BEST PART 0:00 to 4:08
I instead of "a neon light" heard "onion light" xD
Plot twist, it was actually a onion light. :')
+Johnny Smallman bamboozled again
No matter how many times I listen to this song, I always hear the line "Hear my words, I'm a mighty Jew."
that would be painfull as hell lol
i was listening to the song and as i read your comment and he literally read mighty jew as he sang it
😢 Such an emotional version of this cover, I - I can't, I just can't (give me a minute to get my hanky)...*sniff*
this is absolutely amazing. 3:05 gave the me absolute goosebumps.
I'm just lying here binge watching your videos & I'm continually blown away by your voice & emotion. You're the best!
This may be a cover of a cover, but it is definitely better than the cover, and arguably better than the original
You were born to be a star, Caleb!
bass bass bass bass I love bass 💜
same
God I can't say this enough but seriously you are easily the most talented cover artist on youtube. Your voice is always beautiful and the way you hit those notes are just incredible.
Holy shit, this has gotta be by far the most on point cover of this song. So much emotion went into your voice, immensely moving experience.
OMG you made me cry !
+mortheres
Sometimes I wish this song wasn't a Meme
A cover of a cover... We have to go deeper!
Simply terrific. I have listened to a lot of covers of this. Many metal cover bands think they can get away with just screaming it but Dave Draiman has an amazing voice, as do you.
I discovered you via Jonathan Young's channel, after being blown away by your cover of the Bells of Notre-Dame. I am still looking for a replacement to my lower jaw, it shattered into little pieces the first time I heard you sing. I have inundated my friends social medias with your work, guys like you deserve more exposure!
Played this version and
the original synchronized.
Wow... man...
+Lluc Torreguitart (NewplayerXL) OH MY GOD THAT IS AMAZING
+Lluc Torreguitart (NewplayerXL) In-freaking-credible!
Porra canta demais. Espero um dia cantar assim.
OMG you sing so much good.
I hope sing like you also day.
Someday**
Finalmente um BR aqui!
Bidi724 We are a legion
holy shit, this was powerful.
Your best cover yet, Caleb. Very, very nice. I will keep this in my favorites!!!
You sing with incredible passion and so much emotion I feel it radiating off of you. I got so many chillsXD you have an amazing range and a beautiful voice keep it up❤
