- Today Winter Guide Riley Osgood demonstrates some of the best practices to keep in mind when it comes time to pack for your Philmont Trek as part of our Philmont Prep Sessions series!
What camp shoes do you use?
Great video! I have a bit of a personal question.. how do you keep you hair in shape while on the trail? I have long hair myself and have no idea what to do short of just cutting it LOL
I too have quite long hair. Mine is curly and just about reaches my shoulders. I am thinking of bringing many hair ties and a couple of hats. When my hair gets out of control I just put it up or out of the way. I hope that helps!
@@thomasg8452 i also have curly shoulder length hair. i will probably bring some hair ties
Just.....hair ties? Braiding and then putting the braid in a bun can compact your hair, so long as it doesn't bump against your backpack. But one thing is for sure: bring hair ties.
When my troop went to seabase, those of us with long hair had it french braided and it worked out fine
What if the rain fly gets soaked?
I would put my clothes and sleeping bag in something waterproof like a compactor bag or other dry sack. Even with a pack cover it can still get wet.
What sleeping bag do you suggest for philmont
any 20 degree bag will be perfect

What model backpack is shown in the video?
looks like a osprey
I would suggest getting the osprey atoms 65
That's all the water you're carrying? Doesn't seem like enough.
