In both sentences, the action is in progress at some point in the past (riding) and in both sentences, the action was interrupted by another action in the past. Thank you very much!!

Hi, Manuela! She didn't answer your question, but I WILL do. There's absolutely NO difference. The only thing is that when the past cuntinuous is used it sounds a lot more natural and informal. (BTW - I'm an English teacher too.)
