Out of all the radios i've seen reviews of, for emergency usage, and overall reliability, this one always comes out on top among a few others. Thanks man!
It works pretty well. The claims made about hand charging are way off. They say 90 seconds of cranking is good for 20 - 30 minutes of radio. Not even close. It is more like 5 minutes. The crank also could be a little stiffer and of more substance, but otherwise it works well and isn't bad.
Great video! Just one caveat: if someone is monitoring without using the "privacy codes" at all, they can still hear you, the codes area just to silence the radio on the channel(s) you are using and make it less likely to hear anyone else using the same frequency while you are. However, as I said, using the "privacy codes" does not prevent someone from monitoring your communications if they have a scanner or another FRS or GMRS radio. All they have to do is turn "privacy code" (also known as CTCSS, or "continuous tone coded squelch system") off.
Amazing little machine. I really like the fact that you can charge other USB-powered devices! This way, you are forever independent of line power for things like smartphones, eReaders, etc.
Thanks for the review. You were really clear on your description of this product. The 90 seconds of crank time may relate to the receiver feature. I have a feeling that if you use the transmitter it may drain a bit faster but regardless this appears to be a nice little product. Once again thanks for this review.
I meant to mention this in my last reply. It sounds like the guy's you received on the GMRS were going thru a repeater because after they unkeyed there was still a dead carrier for a few seconds. After watching this video I ordered this little bugger last night. They should give you royalties for this video. Once again, thanks.

flash001USA The European version of this radio has PMR446, Marine radio tuner , 9 kHz AM spacing (522-1620) and FM (100 kHz spacing; 87.5-108.0). The marine tuner can be tuned to continous marine broadcasts on marine VHF channel 21 (161.650 MHz) and 83 (161.775 MHz).
Hi I just bought this radio and it's a great deal because you get weather, am, fm and at least one means of contacting others (good guys or bad guys) that might be outside your bunker. It is really worth the price especially if you aren't involved with ham radios, ect. Just get it... and store it in a little Faraday cage.
I have done several reviews on items unrelated to knives as well as reviews of knives which have never been for sale. If I like it and think others may too, I will review it. Never did get into Ham but agree it is an interesting hobby.
Transmission range is between 2-3 miles under normal conditions, slightly more for ideal (over water, open flatland) or less for obstructed conditions (valleys, hills, buildings).
Nice review! You seemed to have covered it all. But one thing I use a lot is a earphone to save battery power when alone. So does it have a earphone jack?
Man thanks for the info ,I am awaiting delivery of my first one !!! Liked your channel an I look forward to seeing more videos!!!( Western Kansas ,out here in tornado alley , literally , can't wait ,leterblow !!!!
That's a GMRS "repeater" station for extended range at around the 7:30 mark. Someone transmits on another frequency (one that this radio can't receive) and the repeater station retransmits their signals on, in this case, channel 21, for extended range.
GREAT JOB ! Thanks i have 2 of these that i have yet too take of the box they are 911 situations and bug out situations . thanks again ! I had yet too play w/mine didn't realize how nice they actually were . lol
Also the European version of this radio has PMR446 and LPD433 radio transceiver and Marine Radio receiver. Instead of NOAA WEATHER BANDS. You can listen to Canadian marine channels on 161.65 and 161.775 MHz. FRS/GMRS also used for Fire brigade radio in the UK, Police radio in Russia, Emergency services radio in Europe. PMR446 are allocated for amateur radio in the US.
Hi Bob, Thanks for the review. It was a pleasant surprise to see a review on an item other than a knife, especially on such a potentially life-saving item. Are you, by any chance, a radio aficionado? It'd be neat to see some more stuff on radios. Ha, maybe even ham radios!
Halo the topic Midland XT 511 Base Camp FRS GMRS AM FM Radio Range I watched the entire video and had a question: what type of frequency is it? VHF - UHF - CB Radio Are rechargeable batteries? Midland® - AVP17 Rechargeable Battery Packs for Midland® GXT1000, GXT1030, GXT1050, T290 and T295 Thank you and have a good day
Just got this radio week, I love it! I do have a question for anyone that knows. I have a set of Motorola walk about walkies that would like to pair up with my Base radio. Is it possible to do that? The channel configuration is little different between the two manufacturers. Please advise.
Yes this was a good review. Also when you said it had a 2 watt power for the GMRS signal I’m sure that most places the sell the midland XT 511 claim that it has 5 watts off GMRS
I have not used it much. I got it for free in a give away so I never had any skin in it. It is a decent little radio considering the category it is in. Most of these emergency radios are cheap junk that would let you down in a real emergency.
You are more than a little vague on the "give-away deal" you got. What was it and where? Was it the kind of give-away companies dish out in return for good reviews of their products by any chance? Privacy does not exist on radio without coded transmission. Selling stuff as having a 'privacy code' is therefore a deception that ought to be stopped.
I got it through a gift program at my day job. It had nothing to do with Knives Town. I have closed Knives Town now so I have no financial incentive anymore, and I still say this thing is fairly decent. I might have been a little optimistic on the broadcast range, but it isn't too bad for the $$.
I have a Grundig FR200 features with not only AM / FM, but also with SW1 & SW2 radio, however it doesn't carry WX & GMRS....I would prefer this XT 511 as my next Emergency Radio
when the radio is set to a off set then you radio will work with a repeter and yes I have a license you give the F c c 35.00 dollars thay give you a license for 10 years
No their limited to channels 23-30 and require a 75 dollars or so may be a little more fcc gmrs license renewable every 5 years to operate. Check out Midlands 40 watt frs/gmrs farm radio.
thay for got to add a license go's with it at 35.00 then you set the pl tone to tower and your up and running I have all that and will not run midlen anything
you are horrible commentator/ instructor. you dragged on and on about the lame no brainer shit and didnt give any examples of real use in such scenarios you might need to instead you just SLOWLY dragged on in monotone about how to put in batteries and wear in with adjustable strabs yadayada dude idc, bad tutorial. One of the clearest and best reviews and descriptions I have seen on UA-cam. Excellent.

flash001USA they did it wrong.
+SPCEverett111111 Meant doesn't have an apostrophe in it. At ease, specialist.

Такой радиоприёмник был в сериале "Сверхъестественное" 5 сезон, 10 серия.
This radio was in the TV series "Supernatural" Season 5, Episode 10.
A thoughtful review. Thank you.
Bob, you've sold me on this.
YOU HAVE A 2 watt 2 mile line of site lunch box the transmitter is 2 watt

Halo
the topic
Midland XT 511 Base Camp FRS GMRS AM FM Radio Range
I watched the entire video and had a question: what type of frequency is it?
VHF - UHF - CB Radio
Are rechargeable batteries?
Midland® - AVP17 Rechargeable Battery Packs for Midland® GXT1000, GXT1030, GXT1050, T290 and T295
Thank you and have a good day
vhf UHF c b is a different radio that truckers use
Just got this radio week, I love it! I do have a question for anyone that knows. I have a set of Motorola walk about walkies that would like to pair up with my Base radio. Is it possible to do that? The channel configuration is little different between the two manufacturers. Please advise.
the in side guts are the same it's the outside package
that changes.
Yes this was a good review. Also when you said it had a 2 watt power for the GMRS signal I’m sure that most places the sell the midland XT 511 claim that it has 5 watts off GMRS
5 watts off G M R S with a license to use G M R S
1.5,Watts
for family service 1/2 a watt
Let's hear some feedback on it. Functions, durability, operating as it should....?
the transmitter has a range of to miles at 2 watts
it will work at two miles in town
I stand corrected you on a 1/2 watt radio with line of site according to my sorce
ya that's real nice might have to buy one
Thanks for the vid.
Alright that one looks very good I have three of them but not that brand.
Are you still using the radio? Would you buy it again? Thanks.
I have not used it much. I got it for free in a give away so I never had any skin in it. It is a decent little radio considering the category it is in. Most of these emergency radios are cheap junk that would let you down in a real emergency.

the code will not let me to talk to you I I find you that'all it does
All the code does is stop people from butting in on
you channel thay can only license to you
Is this made in the U.S.A?
It would just immediately start working off the rechargeable battery as long as it was set to rechargeable as you say.
i have the same unit, how is yours, update please......
I have a Grundig FR200 features with not only AM / FM, but also with SW1 & SW2 radio, however it doesn't carry WX & GMRS....I would prefer this XT 511 as my next Emergency Radio
What are your recommendations for better units?
rugged radios are made for off road so there water tight
and require a license I run a 45 watt base
Not a review. Nothing more than a physical description. Need to see its real world operation and evaluation to be a review.
Where was this advertised as a review, pal.
I use the ac adaptor. AM FM not the best but average.
Why does Midland claim a 38-mile broadcast range?
Because it will do 38 miles line of site over the water or mountain top to mountain top. Under perfect conditions.
that is on G M r s thay refuse to state that in there add and thay will not tell you that a license is required as I have one
when the radio is set to a off set then you radio will
work with a repeter and yes I have a license
you give the F c c 35.00 dollars thay give you a license
for 10 years
Not supposedly. GMRS does require a license. Around 70 dollars for the license.
WRONG IT IS 35.00 dollars I have one then the radio need's to be
linked to the tower to work
$ 35.00 For 10 Years GMRS License .
as of june third I payed 35.00 dollars for ten years
On Midland's website it is listed under (Up to 36 mile range)
with a G M R S license and the radio need's to be tuned to the tower to work
How far you can transmit that CB?
It's not a CB. It uses UHF frequencies nowhere near 27 MHz
it is not a CB the range is two miles on family service
is there a offset for repeaters?
ac0v
No their limited to channels 23-30 and require a 75 dollars or so may be a little more fcc gmrs license renewable every 5 years to operate. Check out Midlands 40 watt frs/gmrs farm radio.
vicey you are wrong the license go's for 35.00 dollars
for 10 years . know you know
yes there is to get your radio to talk to the repeter
I must of clicked reply instead of comment..sorry man
ITS NOT A CB!!!!!!!! Its a 2 way radio. There is a huge difference dude. lol
on U H F frequencys
I have to disagree it reaches about 20-40 miles as most of midland walkie talkies reach about 36 miles.
then you are on G M R S as I am I do 20 miles and when I am linked to the east coast I talk to chicago
36 Miles says Midland on there website
thay for got to add a license go's with it at 35.00 then you set the pl tone to tower and your up and running I have all that and will
not run midlen anything
with a license and tune your radio to a tower
I have both and a license for 10 years at 35.00 to
the f c c
Laws have changed since then so Yes you have to have a license on GMRS I have one .
I have a g m r s license and talk to 6 repeter's here in town covering 6 city's and three county's
Yeah Laws have changed since 10 years ago of this comment.
I have a license too
I AM a licensed holder on G M R S f r s does not
need a license

the radio has a two miles range
