Yes without a license requirement for frs/gmrs channels 1-22 under fcc part 95e regulations. channels 23-30 require a license renewable every 5 years, for repeater operations. Effective January 1st 2018.

@@VickyGeaganno they don't as anything past 22 is a fake channel and sales gimmick by Midland. Also the FCC doesn't care and won't do anything and neither will the police. Just use whatever baofeng you want for GMRS.

The little hole on the side of the mic can be used with a earphone.. Those types of mics are used quite often on amateur radio handhelds. Not the best sound but they work. N4TCM

I have the exact same hand helds and the portable base camp radio. Great radios for the price.

Thanks for the review, I bought Midland Base Camp XT511 back in 2015 with 4 extra rechargeable batteries as a separate purchase from Amazon . The battery that came with the radio charges, the 4 extras are crap. Buyer be where of the extra batteries... All in all great piece of equipment. I will give you some love and Subscribe to your channel. SUBBED

I recommend this radio with the midland frs/gmrs farm radio kit. allows you to set up your own personal communications system. May come in handy for a shtf event. The new version is 5 watts of power instead of the old version that was only 500 milliwatts a half watt. FCC approved under the new FRS/GMRS part 95 E regulations effective January 1st, 2018.

Seems like a nice guy with good info but waiting for a good point for the first 1:40 was painful... I almost threw my phone waiting during the drum roll lol
Thanks for the good info dude 👍

I would think that you could just take some side-cutters and snip off the jack for the external speaker, so that when you plug the mic in, the speaker jack will not be plugged in so it should make the unit receive only on the base unit. That said, some people might like having the sound come out of the mic so that if the connection is weak or faint, you won't have to hold the entire radio up next to your ear, but rather just hold the mic to your ear..

Just a tip, make a list of talking points so that you aren't trying to figure out what to say next. Also you won't be talking about the same four points over and o bed again and not hitting on a dozen other things that you missed.

I thought he did pretty good. But I wish he had talked to the handheld's from a distance to re-affirm that it was connecting.

wouldnt be easier if those xt1000 would have AA batteries instead of proprietary ones? it just put unnecessary hassle with swapping and charging.also how good reception does XT511 has? Too bad that in my country XT511 cost around 120€, and even if bought abroad customs tax price it over 100€ /piece.

Thanks for the questions. The GTX 1000 can also use AA. The proprietary midland batteries do last much longer than AA. The XT511 is pricey, but the I think it is worth it if you need something like that. If you do it is the best option around. Customs taxes can be hard. You might look at some EU comparable items. I don't think anything like the XT511 is available, but maybe a few items together could do the same thing. The range is really good. I can get about 3 miles (4.82 km) in rural areas and about 1 mile (1.61km) in a dense city from inside a house.
