    Concerning point 10, and amusing to me, "An American Werewolf in London" starts in Yorkshire...

      Saying something when even a werewolf leaves Yorkshire. Reminds me of the 2 'wonderful' years I spent in West Yorkshire in the early noughties with the ex wife. Sadly I should have left the ex wife behind but it took a few more years to come to my senses. I would like to assure the ppl of Yorkshire that I solved their werewolf problem, however after getting divorced she went back. So I guess the curse carries on.

      As far as I'm concerned America just produces mostly formulaic crap, with a few exceptions.

    ''Usually British characters are losers who get shat upon from great heights'', yes, and that's the underdog we're talking about that we all love and laugh at. We are desperate for these people to ultimately succeed but it's always written in a way that the characters blunder through the world around them, without decorum and often an overbearing sense of self, and so, we laugh to see them fail as much as we love to see them win. That's basically the dichotomy of all successful British sit-coms.

  • @jabbra1837
    @jabbra1837 2 дні тому +1

    I agree on the underdog thing, as much we Brits love a good "rags to riches" unexpected hero, it would be silly to say that's a purely British taste. There are loads of American films that follow the same formula.

      Technically correct, but through common usage most people use Big Ben to signify the tower too, which makes it correct in common parlance. This happens a lot, such as Hoover becoming the word for a vacuum cleaner, even though Hoover is a brand name. Being a pedant over technicalities doesn't change the fact people use the word that way.

I thought it rather arrogant to suggest that for John Malkovich to appear in a British film was beneath him. The reason was it was the only offer of work for some time. The USA film industry had abandoned actors in favour of the green screen. I refer back to The Games.

    They did stick to a particularly niche part of the UK film industry for the most part. Young, unemployed, uneducated, white, male, thugs that think life going bad isn't their fault - mostly shot in black and white with angry, shouting, anti-establishment sound tracks. Not a single film shown is one I've enjoyed or would watch again. You'd think we'd didn't make any other type of films. Life doesn't have to be grim to be realistic - my favourite Northern British film currently is "Bank of Dave" based on a true story but there's Calendar Girls, Military Wives, The Damned United and more.
    What about Ealing comedies, Hitchcock films, Bridget Jones, David Lean's epics such as Lawrence of Arabia then there's The Railway Children, Oliver, multiple WWII films (Went the day well, The Dambusters, Bridge over the River Kwai etc ) The Monty Python batch - plus a fish called Wanda, Secrets and Lies and Little Voice, The Queen, The Imitation Game, The Iron Lady ........................perhaps these didn't fit the signs - or perhaps they aren't signs after all??
