Not British or American, but I don't think British people don't have pride in being British, they're just not quite as sickeningly obnoxious about it as Americans, and some other countries. Also, I think you also have to account for the four individuals countries of the UK, which I guess for some may impact on their pride in being British or part of the UK, as they may feel English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish first. Just 2 cents from an outside observer.

Well that was bollocks, have you noticed that brits who love the US are always obsessed with money and talk crap about the uk some of the reasons that it's easier to be an entrepreneur in the US is workers have little to no rights and an attitude in the country that it doesn't matter who you trample on as long as you make it and God help you if you don't make it, the uk has way too much poverty and deprivation at the moment but it's nothing compared to what it's like in america, also whilst I'm on a rant if we're so scared to try anything why are there so many British actors and musicians and the thing about stand ups there's thousands of stand up comedians there just not big in the US

I think the difference between the amount of people starting businesses out of American and British Universities is down to two particular factors. Firstly, Americans see being an entrepreneur as being something special, that is not the case in the UK. It's like 'you started a business, so what?' Everyone who delivers for Amazon is technically running their own business along with the majority of plumbers, painters and other such construction industry tradesmen. The second factor is that these UK universities, especially Cambridge and Oxford, are focussed primarily on more scholarly subjects like the sciences and humanities rather than the likes of business and IT.

  • @enemde3025

When will people get that there is NOT one " BRITISH" accent !!??
We have SCOTTISH, ENGLISH, IRISH and WELSH accents ! They are ALL British !
Each accent then has it's own dialects that can change very 10 miles or so!
In the 12 century, on the battlefield, English soldiers would carry flags with 3 gold lions on them on a red background. The 3 lions badge grew from the union of the royal families' use of the lion symbol.
There is no such thing as a British National football team ! Each country has it's own national team.
There IS a British Lions rugby team though.

  • @bobsteele9581
    @bobsteele9581 3 місяці тому +3

These two guys made the occasional decent point, but overall they they were talking mostly in false stereotypes. For a start there is no such thing as a "British" football team except at the Olympics (and there they use the Union Flag as their symbol). It's the England team that uses three lions, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own completely separate football associations and national teams with their own symbols. The Scottish national team for instance uses the Lion Rampant as our symbol. Also as far as the assumed lack of national pride in Britain, here in Scotland we certainly have more national pride that most countries, as do the Welsh and Irish. And if you want to see English national pride, you just have to have a look at how all the St. George's crosses suddenly appear everywhere in England if their taking part in a major international football competition. You were spot on about why British universities produce less entrepreneurs btw. It has less to do with educational standards and more to do with the fact that the US has a much more capitalist orientated culture. British Universities in my experience tend to emphasise science or arts education, for instance, rather than business.

Brits are patriotic, we just not ober the top and in your face about it. We are modest and down to earth and not with our head in the clouds, success is different to everyone, being entrepreneur isn't the oniy way to be successful. These guys im sorry aren't see Britain the right way, they're making judgement based just upon their experience rather than doing research with other people of uk and to put the uk down the way they do is disgraceful. Just cause we are different to America that isn't a bad thing like these guys are putting across. The uk measures its success as we have more writers, actors, academics, engineers and even inventions that America takes advantage of, America judged success on how much ,oney you make, while money helps you live there are far more important things we have that are far more valuable than an entrepreneurship. These guys don't speak for the whole of the uk just themselves so take what they say about the uk with a grain of salt. What he said about British pride is BS, of course we have pride in Britain, its sounds lioe he doesn't have British pride and he thinks he can speak for us all HE DOESN'T. In the uk our pride is in our hearts and don't need a huge display or to show off, America is the opposite they need the display to show pride, brits don't.
So the guy with the beard is so insecure that he needs external validation which majority of brits don't need and that's why he prefers America as they often need external validation.

We're also supposedly the animals with the greatest stamina. There are dozens of animals that can outrun us and outmanoeuvre us with their speed and agility, but they all tire quicker than us. There aren't many other animals that are marathon runners the way we are.
When i learned this fact it suddenly made sense why zombies and other forms of undead are such recurring monsters in our fiction and folklore: they're literally outcompeting us at the thing we can outcompete all other animals at. They don't tire, they never stop, they just keep coming until we exhaust ourselves, which is how we hunted our prey before the agricultural revolution and domestication of livestock.

Maybe not that many stand-ups from the UK end up with global reach, but there are a ridiculous number of working stand-up comedians in the UK - to the point that many US stand-ups envy the opportunities UK comedians have to work at the lower levels and build their set and audience. The greatest flaw inbuilt into us here in the UK is deference to class. Our class structure elevates the wrong people based on privilege so our top universities are filled with overly rich kids who went to expensive private schools so we tend to turn out highly educated fools. There is very little space for natural selection for talent in the UK as it has become much harder for state educated kids to break through in to the top jobs. A reason for this may be that the per pupil premium cost for educating a UK kid is roughly half the cost of a US kid. I believe this can handicap the UK and its entrepreneur spirit.

My take on this JJ is that the US has more opportunity - simply due to its size and resource base - if your XYZ isn't working in this town, well... go to another. In the UK it feels like the individual is surrounded by closed doors and indifferent / stressed out people with no spare margin - and it's like this everywhere. So there is no point in moving as it'll be more of the same - people are struggling and have been for decades, so the entrenched attitude is defensiveness and a desire to cling to the better-days of the past, not move into the future.
London is a big problem. In say 1970 there was still a decent spread of work / opportunity in most areas of the country. Those evaporated with some remaining in London - the rest of the UK (esp. under the Tories) has been savagely run-down. And to work in the London area you need either be rich or born there (so have an established home) - forget moving into the area unless you are very ££ loaded. Yet there's also a background attitude that "people who don't make the move to London are electing to be unemployed" i.e. blaming the victim.
In many ways the UK has not yet resolved the loss of Empire. What did work pre (say) 1950 no longer works; we have not yet found what does work and are rather at a loss... :(

Its like the 2 guys on a bus meme, Brits are melancholy by the wall, and Yanks are smiling at the landscape. The bulk of brits portrayed in Hollywood either have the classic RP accent or cockney, so i find it hard to believe they would find other regional accents as intelligent. You could be the smartest person in the country, yet if you have a thick scouse accent (for example) most brits will assume you barely graduated school. My favourite American accent would have to be mid-west/southern areas i guess, Kansas / Texas types, think Gerald McRaney.

Interesting conversation, and maybe I misunderstood, but I do feel their definition of success is based very much on their own aspirations towards entrepreneurship, which negates many other measures of success in life such as pushing forward scientific knowledge, creative success in the arts, music, literature etc, success in sporting endeavour, or just individual perceived success in achieving whatever you personally desire in life which could be achieving success in your chosen career, having a family, going travelling, creating a charity, being a popular enabler of community effort and so on. I'm far more impressed with these measures of success over only being an entrepreneur as the best measure.

You can have success working for an established company; is starting your own business and making less money than a comparable role's salary mean you are more successful because you made it?
What metric is used for entrepreneurship? Are they accounting for successful rates of growth with a minimum term of business? Does a business that is created and goes belly up after five years of no growth count towards those entrepreneur numbers?

The well educated idiots in this video are giving a solely English skewed and for some reason entrepreneurial biased assessment of life in the UK.
For a start being an entrepreneur and having a degree from a top university don’t necessarily make you successful in any way shape or form.
Secondly obviously the EDL is an England only organisation, so has no real relevance in the other three countries that make up the UK and for 50% of the countries that make up the UK having a flag flying isn’t an issue, it might be a sign of if you believe in independence (you’d be flying either the Scottish or Welsh flag) or a Unionist (you’d be flying the Union Flag/Jack) but to be honest, that isn’t even a guarantee.
There is no such thing as ‘the British Football Team’. The three lions are used by the England team. It is the symbol for England in the Royal Standard. The Scottish team also uses their Royal Standard representation in the Lion Rampant. So they are talking nonsense about things they know nothing about. Wales isn’t represented on the Royal Standard and the representation for Ireland isn’t just for Northern Ireland, it’s the Harp which is a representation of the whole of Ireland and wouldn’t be appropriate due to the political, religious and sectarian connotations involved with that.
Selling yourself isn’t necessarily a good thing because often those that are more inclined to do it aren’t actually as capable as the person who is a little more reticent when it comes to self promotion.
Optimism isn’t a sign of greatness, it’s more likely to be a sign of gullibility and he also keeps going on about entrepreneurs but ffs, I think on the whole we have proven as a group of nations that we are able of punching well above our weight in creativity when it comes to just about everything.

Every American should have a British friend and every Brit should have an American friend.
It's like we'd be complimentary: the British friend helps the American to develop their antifragility and not be crushed by negative remarks and the American friend helps the Brit with the crippling lack of self belief.
Now i just need an American with self belief to set up the website where Brits and Americans can find one another to be online friends and make us both rich. 😅

As in the past it has usually ended up with the American telling me how much better the US is then the UK, and complaining that the UK is not more like the US. I think because he speaks the language fluently he’s able to get a really interesting perspective. Also the video just feels really dreamlike and bizarre, as soon as he arrives in Belarus this guy invites him to see the local graveyard and then to buy vodka.

The 3 lions symbol is a reference to the Royal coat of arms which had 3 lions as a symbol of strength and power and dates from medieval times when Henry the first adopted a lion as his 'Standard' (war banner) This was added to by subsequent monarch until Richard the first used the 3 lions as his Standard and coat of arms. It is still used as a part of the Royal Standard and coat of arms these days. Hence the use by sports teams as their symbol.

I think this obsession with money and entrepreneurial spirit misses a significant point. The whole point of economic activity (all of it), is to improve the standard of living. If one has no (or little) social safety net, and no access to healthcare except via one’s employer, *of course* one will work harder! The consequence being if one doesn’t, one will die! The US’s economic output is masterful; but at what cost to families and standard of living, if someone’s always working three jobs and a side hustle to do it? To me it is a marker of a higher standard of living that one can choose to work hard or efficiently because the consequence is minimal, and still have a better work life balance.
I’ve met some lovely Americans both in the U.K. and the states; but they seemed more compelled or obliged in America than abroad.
