Or how seriously good he is at playing and singing at the same time. That shit is harder than most people think, especially with lyrics like this and piano part like this
The idea of memorizing and then rememorizing the same song is unfathomable to me. I have a hard enough time adjusting when I found out I've been getting one word wrong. Also, with all the tempo changes, it's astounding that he lands exactly where he intended.
I am that person who saved a copy of all the versions that I know of. IIRC there's the Royal Variety Show version, the Ruth Jones Show on BBC Wales, The Late Late Show on RTE, Wogan on BBC Radio and the sole US version was on Conan's show. I hope that helps!
He's done this song on the Royal Variety Show, on the Late Late Show on RTÉ in Ireland, and on Conan's show in the USA. And he rewrites it each time to tweak the references. This one, from Ruth Jones, is the original, though.
The question isn't "How does this guy not have more Tonys?" The question is " How does this guy not have all the Tonys?" And also "Is it Tonys or Tonies?"
It's so perfectly executed that the song is actually like 3:02 long but he technically isn't playing or singing the last part, but the audience does, so it's cleverly done that he actually does play for exactly three minutes.
@nedflanders5444 not all of his songs are meant to be funny, white wine in the sun is pretty emotional. doesn't take away from his brilliance as a comedian
IMO the best one was the one he did on Conan. It was a bit tighter, and I liked “you’ve got a box and I wanna be in it”, and it ended more neatly: “Don’t mind me I’ll be done in three” right on the dot. Beautiful 😆
I always find it fascinating remembering the tim doesnt read or write scores, he just remembers what he plays. And while he did write the music for Matilda the Musical, someone else would of actually written the score while he played it
Im gonna be that person but since I work in production and play piano myself.. there's a clock where talent can see so they know when to wrap up. Audience cannot see it for obvious reasons. So then him being a competent musician makes it easier to adjust timing, if needed. But yeah, it's not that he practiced for so long, it's more so he practiced this skillset for a "very" long time.
@@dannybou-maroun8028 Practicing for a time frame reminds me of the community band I play in performing a piece a few years back called "5 Flat" in which it is meant to be played at whatever tempo in which you can play the piece in 5 minutes or less. Took us a lot of practice but we managed to do it, clocking in around 160bpm or so.
I'd never noticed that he namechecks Victor Borge in this song, and not necessarily in a complimentary way. Which is kind of surprising, as I'd consider Victor Borge to be absolutely timeless and a simply fantastic comedian and musician.
to the above three commenters: Tim Minchin's saying that the conservative, little-britain viewer that would complain if he performed anything more racy than 3 Minutes think that Victor Borge is the peak of innovation in musical satire, and he has to pander to this demographic's beliefs to a) convince them to buy tickets to his concerts and b) not get complaints to the BBC which might prevent him getting booked in the future. He's saying that Victor's work isn't at the leading edge of musical satire anymore, which at best is a neutral statement about the progression of the industry and at worst is him saying "Borge's work is boring and prissy, he doesn't even say 'Fuck'!"
@@camyron Thank you! This is how I see it. It's not exactly a slam on Borge, but yeah, it's neutral at best. And it just seems to me an odd choice to namecheck. I'm sure he could have come up with an act that genuinely does seem rather trite these days, rather than a guy like Borge who, while his comedy may not exactly be edgy, is just as enjoyable today, decades after his death, as he was at the start of his long, long career. Obviously that's just an opinion, but I'd say it's widely shared.
I can't help it, I kinda love this guy, he's like if Ricky Gervais was a singer/songwriter 😂 And the genius that brought us such musical classics as "School Song", "Loud", and "Revolting Children"
Tim is god. You can't capture his genius in a few videos or even 50. This guy wrote the Pope Song as well as the hits to Matilda and Groundhog Day the musicals. I don't know how much more contrasting you can get - not that the Pope song isn't also brilliant lyricism (and his performance of it with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was shown on Australian free-to-air TV). Lol🤣👌.
I can never get through "White Wine" without choking up. I got a quiet sense of satisfaction that Tim choked up over his own damn song in the latest version he posted of it. Serves him right for making me cry for years with it. LOL

@@JamesLikesCoffee As far as citizenship, yes, he's both, though he would hardly have much British cultural influence being born to Australian parents and moving to Australia when he was very little - at least not before he lived in Britain for a few years when his career started.
